4:42 AM
@bertieb Youtube Music actually

3 hours later…
8:09 AM
@bertieb The dev's a BOFH and dosen't care much for political correctness
but the app does what I need it to do
and the main thing is... as with so many things in the RA-annex
we own/run it

morning

3 hours later…
11:05 AM
@jokerdino Ah!
@JourneymanGeek That's a charitable view from the bits I've read (and the reports of others)
he's openly hostile to users and contributors alike
wouldn't have lasted a second under 'Be Nice', never mind any CoC
now it's his playground, and he can run it the way he wants
complete with 'gas chamber' references

@bertieb If you don't read his FAQ.... uh yes
he can be rather impressively hostile

but to extend the analogy, if he behaves like a bully, people will avoid him

WHich I totally think is his intent
practically there's other options if you don't like his attitude
or fork or ...
yanno
though I might not have gotten the (google subsidised) ttrss android client if I knew what I knew now

Well yeah, as I often say folks can do what they want :D
I nearly went with ttrss when I was looking at it however many moons ago
but some things caught my eye and I gave it a wide berth
other folks don't care about the dev if the app is fine
which is also okay

Yeah, I know one project did that
I was (and am) actively looking at alternatives since I do realise not everyone takes the same approach and I don't recommend software I don't trust

11:14 AM
nods
I mean when you get right down to the issue itself, it's a thorny issue
How much does a dev's behaviour influence recommending the app?

frankly - uh
I usually don't dig too deep ?
I'm more focused on solving a problem - and at that time it was the option a lot of folks recommended

which is also fine
ah see that last bit is is where lies the rub

and well "This is what I use" vs "I agree with this person"

the app is good and does the job well

this was uhhh

11:16 AM
so people recommend[ed] it
say on /r/selfhosted

so, do I do a deep dive to see if the author is a <redacted>?

so however many dozens, hundreds, thousands use it
most without issue

but some have problems
some want to extend it
some want to write a plugin

some want to run it on unsupported software

11:17 AM
and then they run into... well

SO here's the thing with the author. If he thinks you're worth his time... he's insanely helpful
he just has no patience at all, or tact

@JourneymanGeek For using software, dig as deep or as shallowly as you want; for recommending it to others, I think the issue is a bit thornier
Sure
Folks are rarely goatee-stroking evil overlords

11:43 AM
reiserFS
Dev is a convicted murder
:D
Problem being, he's in jail
Also. I like Fanta

Hehe. Some some software developers learn to code while in prison
> Slack, one of Silicon Valley’s more diverse companies, has hired three formerly incarcerated coders.
> Google: Seattle software engineer found hope working in a computer lab behind bars
> In 1996, Zachary Moore committed a murder. Today, he’s a computer engineer at a Silicon Valley tech firm.

@bertieb so... "I like this software, but I don't endorse the dev"?
in this context though, I was also talking about self hosting ;D
....
@bertieb also, I completely forgot about the gas chamber thing

@JourneymanGeek Pretty much!

11:59 AM
I guess maybe matrix is a better example? :D

9 hours later…
8:32 PM
What does it mean in Windows 10 when you plug something in through USB and nothing happens, when it works if you plug something else into that same port?

Ave
@JohnnyApplesauce that the first something is likely dead
unless it works when you plug it into a different device or port, in which case you're unlucky as that port is cursed.

I will summarize the situation then
The device is a guitar pedal that has the option of being edited with a desktop app they made
Pedal lights up and its settings (it's digital) can be cycled through as normal when plugged into USB; it just doesn't get recognized by the computer itself (no Windows message about recognizing a new device)
The name of the desktop app is Guitar Lab from ZOOM

8:49 PM
So it's getting power, but not data

1 hour later…
9:50 PM
mumbles dodgy cable
or mumbles Windows driver

10:06 PM
lol @ "mumbles"

1 hour later…
11:12 PM

@XKCD why is it so fuzzy?

weird.
Even the comic on the site itself is fuzzy.
Maybe Randall is running out of anti-alias pixels.

Looks like it isn't antialiased.
...beat me to it.
(because normally xkcd has 2x versions for high-DPI displays)
