6:47 AM
Argh!. Windows 10 hiding most of my icons again. Even after killing and restarting explorer, restarting a few times etc.
I want to defacate in the laptop, set it on fire and upgrade to win7
I just spent the last half hour booting, rebooting and re-rebooting my laptop to get to my desktop icons. MS please upgrade win10 someday to win7 or some alternative superior product.
even the taskkill /f /im explorer.bat file is not working

7:12 AM
Windows 10 has been rock-solid for the past 2 years on my computer
@Hennes Just don't put anything on your desktop :P

I put everything on my desktop (and I do not use my files
Rock solid: It was when I installed it.
I know expect it to crash at least once per week, and that browsers have a 'sorry, this tab has crashed' at least 5 times per day. Though the last is not win10's fault
But spending an hour just to boot, open the desktop, create a folder, drag desktop folders to the folder 'to be moved to desktop'' and then dragging them to the visible desktop?
Because it bloody keeps hiding files aqnd folders at random ?
I suspect it is a case of 'do not come anywhere near the edge of a screen or win10 will fuck you up'

7:40 AM
@Hennes Have you tried dragging to the desktop directory in explorer rather than to the displayed desktop?

No, I never use explorer
But I suspect it is a case of win10 using multiple desktops (which cannot be turned off) and my dragging this across the edge of the screen to the other computer (using teamviewer to access my work laptop, which allows dragging between the remote desktop and my home PC's desktop)
And I tend to use work files on the home desktop since it is MUCH faster
38Mb excel files on a laptop with a laptops low power CPU do not tend to play along well. Even if you minimize formula's
Well, most laptops anyway. Work laptop is an lenova I490 with an i5-8365 @ 1.6GHz
Compared to my nornal laptop (I9-9900k factory OC'd to 4.5GHz) is it painfully slow
Not sure if that is due to CPU or memory (I think I managed to get the helpdesk to install a 64 bit version of orifice 365
Though that took a lot of time and it still feels significantly slower than office 2016

8:02 AM
If you use Excel files of 38MB, you probably need another solution :p

8:46 AM
Agreed.
Also, excel has a limit of 1.8 mil lines. The fact that I know that limit by heart proves your point
But I work at Philips and "we are driven to excel"
Which possibly is not the point which the marketeer was trying to make, but which still is very valid
Everyone has ms excel. Everyone uses it. Regardless if it is the best tool or not
And if you want someone to understand and possible filter and pit table your dats you best mail it to them as .xlsx
Was worse on my previous place at Philips. Enter into excel. Disable auto calculate or it would take 10 minutes after each enter value and press enter
F9 and go for lunch (tm)
And yes, repeated, wrong tool for the job
I work around it by editing the big exel on my home PCs (i5-6600k and I9-9900k) which makes it acceptably fast.
Not sure how company IT thinks about that.
Since I explicitly did not ask

That's... horrifying :D

9:09 AM
I totally agree xD

Work instruction MCOS (market cost of sales).
Open excel 1. Paste values from powerBI
edit tab 2.
edit tab 3.
edit tab 4.
edit tab 5.
edit tab 6.
Open excel B
Paste values in excel B
Close excel A
Edit tab 2
Edit tab 3
Edit tab 4
IOpen excel C
Paste values in
....

I think that the WI was before somone knew the 'paste special - as values'

(it used 6 excel. And F9 lasted 5-30 minutes)
But yes, even ms access would be better then 20-50mb excel files
It allows youyou to save as excel with multiple 1.8 mil line tabs (yes, actually in production)
Worst thing: I used to care. I no longer do

Most of that can probably be streamlined by saving pure data to CSV, then importing it into Excel when you actually need to deal with it.
If you're taking data from one sheet, and copy and pasting it into another sheet it pulls so much more than just the numbers with it.

Hate to say that MS Access is also not the answer, we have one Access database here just to import some lines from Excel and every few weeks it gets corrupted

Heh, acess getting corrupted is very familiar
Using a database. (a PROPER database) might be the answer

I mentioned that I was keeping an asset register for our small site in Access as a learning experience and one of the finance guys was like ... "Uhhh we're not allowed to use Access"

9:23 AM
But then I need to teach people how to use that
So right now (on a scale of 1 to 3 where 1 is urgent, 3 is day to day taks), I have 6 at status 1, one at priority 0, 2 and prio -1.

So any valaue 3 tasks can wait for a few years
Were they allow to use Nooo-skueel (no SQL) ?

they used excel

Personally I love to take soe piostgress lessons and see how I can implement things. Potentially with acess of as front end and with postgress to store the data.
But then I would need to get a VPN to run postgress on since I lost my last server.
To be fair. server was at Stack. Technical university, computer club. With the goal sto introduce people to these new fangled , room big machines called computers
And I still have the micro dutch manuals at home. (19, feet high) boxes of hardware for a single 16Mhz 68020
with a whopping 6MiB of memory (4 usuable, 2 unknow but stopped working when you removed them)
We offered thos4 eextremely new fangled things like email.
Which, to be fair, no longer requires a special club for these extremely rare things

@ramhound How the |F**** did someone install 32 bits OS on anything from this decade?

@Hennes - I have a Lenovo laptop I still use from 2008, which works perfectly well, even 12 years later.
Has the current version of Windows 10 installed on it by the way
It only has I believe 2 GB

I got my 2009 laptop (attached to a beamer, intended to run VLC and almost nothing else). Win7 x86. From |Feb 2009

So it's a 32-bit installation

But but from a (semi) recent work laptop.

As for a company, simple explanation, IT didn't know any better.

1:18 PM
I buggers the mind

i3-4340TE is not recent

You are right. Launched Q2 2014.
Still, that is almost a decade into 64 bit computing
And 5 years after my own old work laptop (64 bit, 5 years before)
Hut yes, I missed that

Of course I have a Haswell computer and it has 32 GB so whatever
(which is the same generation as that processor)

My Dell E6500 had 4GiB. which was max for it.
Seems so littlle these days
Also, soo happy I ordered new laptop memory pre-cororna era.

Is it appropriate to switch this image with the English menu?

@CaldeiraG Yes, of course. Please go ahead.
