So... G.SKILL did replace the failed memory modules under warranty. I have no intention to install 64 GB of memory onto Astaroth so I'm just going to hold onto these new modules as spares.
I might use them for a future build, though.

uhm
I'm having one of those denvercoder situations
I'm having an issue mounting a directory on a USB HDD, and the only 'answer' I can find is a comment

@bwDraco why not tho
you can't wear them out.
@JourneymanGeek mounting a directory on usb?
/me can't compute

1:15 PM
I have a question on su

Q: Unable to access smb share on external USB on ubuntu 19.10 from windows 10

Journeyman GeekI've tested this on both EXT3 and NTFS USB drives (the same one, reformatted) - when I share a directory on an external USB drive as a smb share on a ubuntu 19.10 PC, I cannot access it using a PC running windows 10. I've tried setting a share from my home directory, and the windows 10 PC is able...

1:38 PM
ah

I was hoping for a moment of rubber duck satori

2:18 PM
Which should be my band name XD

2:33 PM
heh
ah
your issue looks familuar, one mo
who owns the mountpoint for the USB?
and can samba or smb user (whatever they're called on ubuntu) access it?
> force user = tim
force group = tim
Now, I'm not sure if that only changes the uid and gid when writing files, or not
also I have public = yes
or no, on the ones you must login to to use.

@djsmiley2k-CoW hmm
I might be able to do that manually
the USB or the directory?

the mounted ddir of the usb
so where ever it's mounted, if smb can't read it then it'll die horribly

this works

2:42 PM
yeah so it's not the base fs's blocking it
so it's likely samba config
you got any working shares?

the bottom one is, but its configured by gnome
I could do one tommorrow, then just swap the path...
Last ditch idea is to just boot off USB.

can you try public=yes ?
configured by gnome....?!

if gnome is controlling smb then your config likely isn't loaded?

possibly
hmm no
cause i tried it manually too
and that share was created
I didn't think to check on a directory in /home/ with a manual config...
(create new folder, try manual setup for SMB...)
the shares are visible not accessible

2:45 PM
I can't imagine gnome controlling smb and allowing you to add shares manually.

Works ._.

then public = yes to allow anon access
otherwise need to list allowed users, smbadd them, etc

No luck
OH
OHHHH
lemme give you my config, go answer
> [Torrents]
comment = Torrent_Share
path = "/media/geek/1 TB/Torrents"
browseable = yes
read only = no
guest ok = yes
public = yes
force user = geek
obvious change Torrent_Share to "Stuff" and Torrents to "Stuff" ;p
eh, or I'll self answer. Not entirely sure why "this" config worked
Lemme try commenting stuff out till it breaks :D
was the force user that was the magic
I'll answer :D

3:04 PM
[kpck bpt was tke fpx
ffs
|So force user + public...

\o/ glad you sorted it

I have no idea why

i was cooking noodles

3:05 PM
getting sutff readyu for leaving tomorrow morning for disney.
Miss's got invite to the panto with kids, so they're out for a few hours
and I'm just randomly sorting stuff

This means I can move torrents back to the beebox (the internal SATA port is broken) and try an older ubuntu on my old PC to see if that gets the video card working :D

brain is panicing, because that's what brain does.

that's what brain does
That is the way :D
Good 2 days
Had a fun problem I talked someone through
now this.
Next, that video card ;)

welp,. it's rather stormy at sea at the mo :D:

@djsmiley2k-CoW They still use the Beaufort scale in weather alerts for the general public?

5:22 PM
it's the shipping forecast, but yes

@bwDraco The shipping forecast has an incredibly strict format
which is interesting to read about in and of itself:
The Shipping Forecast is a BBC Radio broadcast of weather reports and forecasts for the seas around the coasts of the British Isles. It is produced by the Met Office and broadcast by BBC Radio 4 on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. The forecasts sent over the Navtex system use a similar format and the same sea areas. The waters around the British Isles are divided into 31 sea areas, also known as weather areas (see map below). There are four broadcasts per day at the following (UK local) times: 0048 – transmitted on FM and LW. Includes weather reports from an extended list of coastal...
It's a peculiarly British thing
it's well established in the national consciousness
one of the few connections to our earlier maritime existence
> The Shipping Forecast is immensely popular with the British public; it daily attracts listeners in the hundreds of thousands – far more than actually require it. In 1995, a plan to move the late night broadcast by 12 minutes triggered angry newspaper editorials and debates in the UK Parliament and was ultimately scrapped. Similar outcry greeted the Met Office's decision to rename Finisterre to FitzRoy, but in that case, the decision was carried through.
> Peter Jefferson, who read the Forecast for 40 years until 2009, says that he received letters from listeners across the UK saying that the 0048 broadcast helped them get to sleep after a long day

@djsmiley2k-CoW Eh, Ryzen's memory controller doesn't like populating all four slots with dual-rank memory modules. The maximum supported speed in this configuration is lower (DDR4-2666), and full DDR4-3200 speed is probably not attainable.

11:07 PM
Workloads that benefit from this much memory are exceedingly unusual even with what I use Astaroth for. Ryzen processors tend to be very sensitive to memory frequency, more so than Intel Core processors: techspot.com/review/1955-ryzen-3950x-vs-core-i9-9900ks-gaming
Ryzen cares a lot more about memory bandwidth than latency because its memory architecture requires that all memory accesses pass through the northbridge chiplet (I/O die).

11:24 PM
This design enables greater scalability and lower cost, but design suffers from higher memory latency. To compensate, AMD uses very large L3 caches and a memory controller capable of efficiently handling lots of concurrent memory accesses.

11:56 PM
@bertieb The Shipping Forecast is full of nostalgia for me.
