Wow.
In my four years as a sports photographer for my college, I've always known the job as being somewhat dangerous because you're on the sidelines, trying to get as close as you can to the student-athletes... but this one is a first.
My college doesn't do gridiron football, but I've covered lots and lots of basketball and I've had my fair share of close calls.
And injuries can happen in unexpected ways in other sports:

Got hit by a foul ball at the softball field during a softball photography assignment. Wound up with a contusion in my left middle finger but it's no biggie.
