Ben Popper on November 12, 2019

This week on the podcast, we sit down with Jess Lee, one of the co-founders of Dev.To, a social network where programmers come to learn, chat, and share ideas with a community of other coders. She explains her strange journey from working as a tour manager for Kidz Bop to building one of the fastest growing and most progressive online platforms for software developers.

Paul and Sara chat about what language is best to choose as your first when you’re just getting started on your journey as a programmer. Probably not Mathmatica, but it’s a neat one. …

It's Nov 12, go update your Windows 10 1803 :p

@CaldeiraG funny that
I finally managed to fix what was stopping my PC from updating to 1903

@JourneymanGeek Is the new November update the version 1904?

I think it might be the
or the one before

I see :)

(been working on my old PC - actually have another load of (cheap) parts to upgrade it)
an older AMD video card and a 1tb chinese SSD (was about 70 USD cause singles day) so I have more space + hopefully faster than spinning rust speeds

@JourneymanGeek Oh nice :D

/me cries in broken network drivers

@djsmiley2k-CoW I was playing with this really nice tool...

2:32 PM
ooo that could be nice
/me thankfully doesn't deal with that anymore
my system can't be upgraded til we have properly working intel drivers.

Output is like this
> If DriverPath is not system32\drivers\wimount.sys, that is likely the issue. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WimMount\ImagePath should be pointed to system32\drivers\wimmount.sys
And yes, that was the actual issue, macrium had changed that, but not changed it back

2:48 PM
:O
nice
self answer queastion go gogo
ypi sjpi
you should comment on the gist saying where you get the clue
because I bet some poor sod in 15 years, will hit the same error, fnid your gist and be like WHHHHHHHHHY?

@djsmiley2k-CoW Very likely XD

obligatory xkcd.

@bertieb look! funny apostrophe is breaking it!

4:15 PM
@djsmiley2k-CoW It sometimes recommends those to me
I haven't had an issue? :s

D:
something something weird in mah codez
Awww yup it broke again
Most of the files it's breaking on atm, are ones it's already imported
so I'm killing it, then removing the file, then starting again....
something in the merge handling is broken, but I can't figure out what

See, I always import and move at the same time
on a subset of music

and the devs don't seem perticularly interestted in doing so
yeah.... I am

so haven't run into this

well, it's doing the dir's 1 by 1
I guess I can litterally point it at a single dir instead.
I'll try that if this merge fails
> This album is already in the library!
Old: 2 items, MP3, 128kbps, 7:31, 6.9 MiB
Old: 12 items, MP3, 128kbps, 53:24, 49.0 MiB
New: 1 items, MP3, 128kbps, 1:53, 1.7 MiB
[S]kip new, Keep both, Remove old, Merge all? m
this, seems to be a common breaking point
Where you have 2 old albums, which it tries to merge into one, and gets stuck

4:38 PM
Yea
It should be able to handle that situation
I wonder if a MWE could be fabricated
With a studio album and a compilation or somesuch

4:57 PM
well these are tehcnically the same album
it just.... screwed up the importing the first time iirc

5:24 PM
Is it possible to create some kind of rule for a specific tag in Superuser? For example, in WSL tag OP don't mention Windows 10 version and the GNU/Linux distribution name and version. The WSL implementations differs drastically in between Windows 10 versions.

5:39 PM
You could either create a version specific tag, for each version
or, update the tag wiki saying to include the version in the post, however, people generally don't read.

I keep thinking about Astaroth (and many gaming PCs') high power consumption at idle and under light loads...
Energy proportionality is a measure of the relationship between power consumed in a computer system, and the rate at which useful work is done (its utilization, which is one measure of performance). If the overall power consumption is proportional to the computer's utilization, then the machine is said to be energy proportional. Equivalently stated, for an idealized energy proportional computer, the overall energy per operation (a measure of energy efficiency) is constant for all possible workloads and operating conditions. The concept was first proposed in 2007 by Google engineers Luiz André...

is it that high?

It's so high it makes Snoop Dogg look sober
rimshot.wav

5:55 PM
And FWIW, simply capping the FPS in a game can dramatically improve efficiency and may even increase perceived smoothness because it can make frame delivery more stable. But what about idle?
(I like how Assassin's Creed Odyssey has a frame rate cap feature in addition to an "adaptive quality" setting; keeping the frame rate in a tight band, e.g. 45 to 60 fps, makes the game feel smoother overall, especially when these features are used in conjunction with a dynamic-refresh-rate display)

It's that time again!

Oh hey, it's time for some Windows Updates! <game show music>

Julia Silge on November 12, 2019

Welcome to November’s installment of Stack Overflow research updates! This month marks one year since my colleagues in UX research and I started sharing bite-size updates about the quantitative and qualitative research we use to understand our communities and make decisions.

In recent months, we have invested time and energy in improving the question-asking experience on Stack Overflow, one of the most fundamental interactions on our site. In August, I outlined what we learned from the question wizard, our first major change to the question-asking workflow in a decade. In September, Lisa  …

@bwDraco Is it the spring 2019 update?

6:32 PM
I'm not getting that on my personal machines...
At least right now.
...welp. My Surface Go is being offered 1909.

Not sure if Windows Update

Or Ubuntu release

lol

7:11 PM
1909 turned out to be a relatively minor patch that's not substantially different than a regular cumulative update...
It's still complex enough to require two reboots, but the second reboot happened within seconds of the first reboot.

7:26 PM
(FWIW, feature updates used to require as many as four reboots)
