@bwDraco welcome to the club

8:26 AM
So my cronscripts, which run nightly
only alert... sometimes
wtf is going on
/me runs the backup script manually with -v

4 hours later…
Neat lol

Will Windows 7 live an eternal life? devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/…

welp, raised a suggestion for beets.
@Biswapriyo yeah sure.

As Principal Web Developer at Stack Overflow and a long time Tech Lead, I learnt that accurate estimates were essential in order for a company to be healthy and productive. Over the years I have spent a good deal of time developing my theories for why estimates and breakdowns are so important, and crafting my own methodology for how best to go about doing them.

Below, I attempt to distill the lessons I’ve learned so that others can experiment with and improve upon my techniques. Now, I should be clear, the advice below is what works for me. I’m sure there are different approaches that might work better for others. Feel free to share your favorite approach in the comments. …

@djsmiley2k-CoW What does your cronscript look like?

Just posted a question that was 6 related questions superuser.com/questions/1495231/…
moab quite rightly pointed out I should ask them as separate questions
There's a 40 minute limit on asking questions on superuser so any suggestions other than posting every 40 mins over 4 hours?

@SamDean No. That is the correct thing to do.

Thanks, will wait for the result of that question closing. As Makubai has pointed out it's borderline off-topic as it's "guess the thing". If it closes as off topic I won't re ask but if it's closed for being too broad I might

4:42 PM
@SamDean there's a community FAQ for IDing cables
> Third up
Yes, that's what it us. Also I think could be used for some devices - I seem to remember one on a 25 pin serial modem
i.imgur.com/PqxJWp9.jpg this one? GET OFF MY LAWN. Its a centronix connector for printers. Used to be ubiquitous

OH!
DMS-59 (Dual Monitor Solution, 59 pins) is generally used for computer video cards. It provides two Digital Visual Interface (DVI) or Video Graphics Array (VGA) outputs in a single connector. An adapter cable is needed for conversion from DMS-59 (digital) to DVI (digital) or VGA (analog), and different types of adapter cables exist. The connector is four pins high and 15 pins wide, with a single pin missing from the bottom row, in a D-shaped shell, with thumbscrews. The advantage of DMS-59 is its ability to support two high resolution displays, such as two DVI Single Link digital channels or two...
5a and B are interesting
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_port its a 25 to 9 pin serial connector but I donno what's with the overall setup
maybe they just connected random stuff that happened to fit?

5:23 PM
@CanadianLuke rsnapshot -q -c /etc/rsnapshot.d/daily.conf daily || echo "Backup failure @" $(ho>
errrr
yeah, that isn't the end, that's the line ending in the editor but anyway, it's obviously not returning 0
/me runs it manually and will echo out $? to see wtf is going on

6:11 PM
welp I answered, thanks for that one @JourneymanGeek I didn't know it.
looks like a early version of DVI?
I imagine it was used as a prototype infact.
oh, it succeeded DVI, cool
While y'all chatting. I answered ;) — djsmiley2k - CoW 12 secs ago
The funnies of 'This takes too long, don't ask this kind of question'
and there.... is a perfect answer.
ok now i'm really confused @CanadianLuke
touch /backups/MushaV3/daily.0/
MushaV3 /home/tim # echo $?
0
it finishes fine

6:31 PM
So then it shouldn't be emailing you @djsmiley2k-CoW
It will email if there is output from the command (silenced by -q, right?), or if $? -neq 0

yeah exactly, I wonder if it's outpuytting something or.... /me goe sto check
> tim@musha ~ $ find ./media/sorted_music/ -type f -print | wc -l
526
tim@musha ~ $ find ./media/music/ -type f -print | wc -l
8646
So nope @CanadianLuke I have no clue what's going on
i think there was a 'bad' backup in there, which has now been removed.

On a meta level, I'm getting seriously concerned about the divide in power between haves and have-nots.
Those who are in a position of wealth and power can amplify their power by exploiting those who are not, who will languish in poverty indefinitely with little ability to move up.
And this is why we seriously need more personal finance education. Big businesses know how to make every dollar count. More often than not, ordinary workers don't. And that's unfair and wrong.

7:15 PM
why's it unfair?
Elon musk is south african
you know, like one of the 'worst' places for education
education isn't soely the answer, people need to be responsible

@djsmiley2k-CoW In your rsnapshot command, you pass the -q switch - does that suppress success output?

7:36 PM
hey folks
regarding this hot question superuser.com/questions/1494939/… is it safe to assume that as a rule USB chargers are interchangeable, and laptop chargers are not?
afaik USB protocol allows for some data exchange about how much power can be provided vs how much the device wants to have, and the device can choose if it wants to charge at all
I think I've seen some power-hungry tablets say "this is not enough, I will not even charge"
but laptops with that connector don't have any data contacts to talk to the charger

@CanadianLuke yupo

@djsmiley2k-CoW So that's why the cronjob won't email you
If it has no output, it considers the job completed successfully

yup, so no email == good
problem is i started getting 'failed' emails
yet, the backups run fine

7:51 PM
What did the failed emails say?

8:04 PM
the backup fails to do a file move
but i check it, and it runs fine :/

8:52 PM
@bwDraco Who is more careful about their dollars? Someone that has to decide between being able to afford food or rent this week, or a business that has millions of dollars? You can't compare the two, and trying to do so is absurd.

@MichaelFrank Most people do have at least a minimal degree of flexibility when it comes to allocating their money...

9:54 PM
That's true, but it doesn't make sense to say "Big business know how to manage their money, individuals should as well!"
Yes, personal finance education is definitely too far down the priority list.
but comparing individuals to big business is not the right way to point it out.
In other news, there is nothing more frustrating on Windows 10 than trying to type to search in the Start Menu and the whole thing just sitting there blank.

@MichaelFrank I like it when it sometimes disregards the first character or two
Yes, I totally wanted to search Bing (!) for "BS", not run OBS

Ooh yes, or it decides you want to search the internet instead.

While I'm there, is that exact scenario listed under 'BS', mmm Start Menu??

10:36 PM
@djsmiley2k-CoW There's an answer for the little USB cable a little further up

11:17 PM
Anyone with access to the review queue: superuser.com/questions/1494025/… please take a minute to deal with the GLAT answer if you don't mind.
(we should obviously not allow that edit but does not mean the answer should stick around)

What is GLAT?

@MichaelFrank - A scam to try and get people to "license" Linux/Unix distributions like Ubuntu.
You obviously do not need a license to use Ubuntu
Any license applies to the source not the compiled kernel and/or the end user.

11:52 PM
DeX. Is. Awesome.
(I just wish Firefox for Android didn't require a touchscreen, because that makes it refuse to run under DeX.)
Hmm. Possible workaround.
