@NickAlexeev PCs use pretty standard voltages
I THINK there's a -12v rail (and someone would correct me otherwise)
Yeah, if there's a CCFL inverter there may be

1:08 AM
@NickAlexeev Not on most modern machines. The highest voltage encounted inside most laptops is 20V.
I haven't seen a laptop with CCFL backlighting in many, many years.
As for -12V... I've not heard of negative voltage rails inside a laptop before.
AC adapters are rated at 19V or 19.5V because of wiring losses. If you cut the wire and measure out of the power block itself, you're probably getting 20V to 21V.

watup peeps
I've noticed there are articles about how to fine-tune ram timings and whatnot for the new ryzen cpus and apparently it's worth some people's time, so that got me thinking if I can do something about that with my i5-8400 and an 8 gig stick of ram
I've been wanting to get more ram and I'm thinking about 2x16 3200Mhz kit but I also don't want to throw away the 8 gigs
is something gonna get goofed up if I just plug them all in, the 2 + 1 different sticks?
cpuz is currently showing me 1:20 in the FSB:DRAM timing box, idk what to make of it
I'm not after 1-2% increases, I just want to avoid >5% losses in general
also I have a B360 mobo and it has xmp profiles which I'm currently using, so idk about that info that these mobos don't support any boosting, or maybe it's just a cosmetic setting that doesn't actually do anything for me
oh wait I thought I was getting 16 gigs + my old 8 but it's actually 32 + 8
ram prices went down a lot, I got confused
ok then, without the old 8 gig stick, does it matter if I get the cheapest 2400Mhz kit or does 8400 benefit from 3200Mhz enough for anyone to care?

3:04 AM
@Hakase in theory you would be running as fast as the slowest ram
though from what I recall ryzen benefits a little more from faster ram
but no, its probably not going to goof up or anything

@JourneymanGeek I wonder if laptops even have a 12V rail

I would assume so
Tablets would not?
But you could always do a rossman and get the schmatics
I guess the question here might be "Do laptop processors need 12v"

4:45 AM
Tried buying a copy of Word 2010. Almost ended up buying from a scam website. :( (No luck with finding Word 2010, but I didn't get scammed)

5:19 AM
I don't think ms has sold word standalone in years
The smallest bundle I have seen is word, Excel and PowerPoint, in 2010 essentials which was never sold
(retail that is)
So any place trying to sell you word 'a la carte' is almost certainly a scam

@AndrewGrimm is there any particular reason you need 2010 and not something more recent?
probably the easiest way of legally getting it is via one of the dev programs, but obviously that's for dev/test use

Also do you specifically need word?

Oh ffs
Bad bios checksum

4:21 PM
Lol bios wouldn't pick up usb keyboards :O
Fortunately I have a PS2 keyboard for this reasons

0_0
how old is this?

5:08 PM
errrr 2017ish

5:20 PM
Heh noticed one of the few times it bothered to boot, it said 8gb ram. I checked, there's 16gb in there. I take2 out. It boots. Not tested any more yet but might upgrade the bios anyway.

@djsmiley2k That board dates to 2010.

k, around then :D

AMD K10, Phenom II processors.

7:36 PM
yah Phenom II 6x something here
now i can't decide if the ram was the issue ~(it seems to be)( oir I just got lucky after removing it

@Bob I know the website doesn't have any images, but I loooove how well Hacker News deals with zooming. Also just how light the site is in general.

9:11 PM
It seems similar to metafilter

I'm all kinds of sad about this Q/A... I thought it was an interesting problem at least.

Q: Operator Mono Book font will not display in Visual Studio Code

noslenacI purchased the Operator Mono fonts to use for my development workstation. I love the readability of the font and really prefer Operator Mono Book; however, it will not display in Visual Studio Code. All other fonts in the Operator Mono font family display (Operator Mono Light, Medium, etc.). Be...

@Bob A friend told me to use Word 2019 for new computers and Word 2010 for old computers.
@djsmiley2k Not necessarily a hard requirement, but it may reduce confusion for the person I'm helping.

11:45 PM
@AndrewGrimm I ... huh. I've never heard that suggestion before.

How old does it need to be to use 2010?
