@djsmiley2k Can't wait for the next hop

5:38 AM
dear god
Kuai Kuai culture is a phenomenon in Taiwan wherein workers put snacks of the "Kuai Kuai" brand next to or on top of machines. Workers who do this believe that, because the name of the snack - "Kuai Kuai" - stands for "obedient" or "well-behaved," it will make a device so adorned function without errors. As such, it can be commonly found in myriad places of work in Taiwanese society. A rigid set of best practices has arisen surrounding the proper use of Kuai Kuai snacks, such as using green bags only, and ensuring the snacks are not expired. == Cultural influence == Kuai Kuai Company Limited was...

@Aibobot lol
o_O
> It is important to not place expired Kuai Kuai; expired products must be replaced immediately ... News reports in Taiwan have placed the blame for some accidents on improper Kuai Kuai usage.

@DavidPostill magic snackfood feng shui is important

1 hour later…
10:42 AM
whoops

11:36 AM
heeey I just figured out screen!

lol

12:18 PM
screen is cool

Bob
tmux is betterer :D

oh god
:D
i was gonna say 'ignore those saying tmux is better'

Bob
12:44 PM
I can't really remember why I switched from screen :P

1:26 PM
@bob check this neat one-liner out
  mkfifo /tmp/fast.com.test.fifo ;token=$(curl -s fast.com/app-ed402d.js|egrep -om1 'token:"[^"]+'|cut -f2 -d'"'); curl -s "https://api.fast.com/netflix/speedtest?https=true&token=$token" |egrep -o 'https[^"]+'|while read url; do first=${url/speedtest/speedtest\/range\/0-2048}; next=${url/speedtest/speedtest\/range\/0-26214400};(curl -s -H 'Referer: fast.com/'; -H 'Origin: fast.com'; "$first" > /tmp/fast.com.test.fifo; for i in {1..10}; do curl -s -H 'Referer: fast.com/'; -H 'Origin: fast.com';  "$next">>/tmp/fast.com.test.fifo; done)& done & pv /tmp/fast

netflix speedtest?

Bob
1:49 PM
that's horrifying
(is it really a one-liner when you have a dozen semicolons? :D)
might be nice as a script/command though

1 hour later…
3:06 PM
@Bob lol, that's how I found it. I'm gonna format it and try and understand it.

superuser.com/questions/1482831/… Can we reopen this? It isn't really offtopic, since he is simply looking for Digital Signage programs.
I am not allowed to vote, so.. it's up to you

@TuxStash.de wayy too broad for the scope of SU
Better suited for chat

Is it? He is not asking for a recommendation, he is asking how it is achieved. I say it is a perfect fit for a question. One could also reword it and ask how infotainment screens work.
If you don't know what to Google for, it is hard to Google it
so he describes what he wants to do
Idk I always act in favor of the customer opening a ticket, not which threads I could close to have my little victory over someone else

> and it is not about …

programming and software development,

Oh come on, this is just petty

3:21 PM
Again, they could always drop in to chat and any one of us could help them

What is the best way (possibly reducing costs) to achieve it? Is it necessary to build a sort of application or using a particular software? Thanks in advance
He is just tossing the idea out there, not asking how to do it

@TuxStash.de Better wait for on of the mods to weigh in, then @DavidPostill @JourneymanGeek
@TuxStash.de I totally get where you're coming from, but Super User isn't for "tossing ideas out there", it's for asking specific questions regarding specific problems
Open discussion is better suited for reddit, chat, quora or forums

The question is specific. He is asking how big infotainment screens work and as a power user one should see that.
BUt then, I am one having to maintain an infotainment system professionally, maybe I see more than others.
We actually do use Xibo to run campaigns and different screens over the day

@TuxStash.de There are dozens of such systems, which work in dozens of different ways. Again, if we allow one question of this sort, we have to allow all of them.
They could also possibly ask on softwarerecs.stackexchange.com
More quotes from here:

Just saying that it is called Digital Signage can lead one on the right path

3:26 PM
> and it is not about …

programming and software development,
electronic devices, media players, cell phones or smart phones, except insofar as they interface with your computer,
asking for a product, service or learning material recommendation,

Bob
Wait, ignore that, I didn't actually click through to the question :P

@TuxStash.de Sure. Feel free to comment that.

Bob
Hm.

As I see you already have

Bob
@rahuldottech it's not programming/dev
whether it should be allowed... @TuxStash.de I suggest you bring it up on meta.SU

3:28 PM
@Bob Ehh, it could fall under "dev"

Bob
looks to be a borderline question (it drifts away a bit from our home/poweruser focus, but not much further than other well-received questions have)
@rahuldottech not at all

Hm. If you say so.

Bob
dev questions are SO-like. Basically, the point where you start dealing with code.

@Bob Hm. I'd say "development" questions don't necessarily have to deal with code?
But I get what you mean

Bob
@rahuldottech In the context of off-topic for SU, they generally do.
If it deals with actual code, writing code, structuring code, etc. That kind of thing.

3:32 PM
He is not straight up asking how to program it, but wondering if something like that exists in the open. And the answer is, yes it does, there are many Digital Signage programs out there and they are quite handy, if you are looking for a system that displays different things on a display.

Bob
Or softwareengineering.SE style questions that deal with processes.

7 mins ago, by rahuldottech
They could also possibly ask on https://softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/

@rahuldottech already said no ;p

for the very same reasons.... or similar anyway

3:48 PM
Let's pack it up, @JourneymanGeek clearly I'm fit to be a mod now

lol
There's only 3 ways I stop being a mod ;p
I get bored, I get hired, or I drop dead ;p

@JourneymanGeek "hired"? Haven't you been employed most of your time as a mod?

@rahuldottech actually no. But I meant a specific job hired ;p

@JourneymanGeek SE hired?
Wouldn't you be getting hired to be a mod tho?

@rahuldottech well, no

3:51 PM
Like, Mod++.

and more

Yeah, makes sense

But I can't be a SU mod then
getting bored could happen
the last... would be awkward

@JourneymanGeek Yeah :/
Question: is SU hard to moderate?

hmm
Not really
Its an older site so the tooling's all there

3:53 PM
I always got the impression that it's one of the less.. dramatic sites, but idk what goes on behind the scenes

granted I was a user in good standing for years
Meta on the other hand

roar
New phone...

Unrelatedly, wow, wouldn't have guessed that all of this was GPT2

The S Pen really came in handy here.
I'm going to be phasing in my participation gradually and take additional steps to avoid posting monologues.

why the hell has my touchpad scrolling turned off YET again?!!?!

Bob
4:42 PM
@djsmiley2k sure you don't have some weird OEM service?

@Bob how would I tell :/

@djsmiley2k Have you tried blaming your cat? ;)

@DavidPostill :D

Bob
@djsmiley2k uh. open services (or installed programs) and look for anything suspiciously named?
sched tasks too

4:45 PM
@Bob that's like everything tho

Bob
:|

urgh it's turned tap to click back on too

@djsmiley2k Is the driver constantly getting reinstalled? Check Security and Maintenance in Control Panel.
@DavidPostill meow

5:02 PM
eh
turning it off and on again has made no difference
no recent problems
nothing in realiability montior for the touchpad either
there is a elan service.
but i suspect if i stop that, the touchpad will stop working?

Try disabling the service.
Or even just remove the driver altogether and see if Windows will take over.

can windows natively configure touch pads?

5:28 PM
I think it can but you may not get full functionality.

5:55 PM
@djsmiley2k Yes, but the generic driver may not support all gestures.
Wow, I have WAY too many spare DDR2 RAM sticks

DDR2 jewellery!
:D
Go for that bling bling look

lol
Four 1GB sticks, four 2GB sticks
I'd donate them to a school or something, but these are laptop sticks and I don't think any place here still uses such old laptops
I know for a fact many places still have old desktops tho, including my college, which has at least 300+ PCs from the early 00s.
I have three laptops that use DDR2 which I was previously using as servers, but I just moved all my server stuff to a newer 2015 laptop with great specs, so...
Not sure what to do with those
Any ideas?

6:11 PM
Sell 'em?

@bertieb It's unlikely that I'll get any reasonable amount for them

It all adds up
Any freecyclers local to you?

@bertieb nothing in this city country

Start one :D

@bertieb I totally want to, but I already have too much on my plate right now. In a couple years maybe

6:14 PM
Well yeah
Was going to say "loads of work, but..."

We have /r/HardwareSwap, but everything there appears to be much more high-end
I'll still make a post tho

Maybe folks at unicollegeschool would be interested in getting something going?
that way it's not just you
and "founded Freecycling group while at schoolcollegeuni" looks good on the CV, IMO
but even better, gives you the feel-goods if stuff does get recycled

@bertieb All colleges in my university issue laptops to those who don't have 'em.

I mean get a group going
Something altruistic
for folks who don't have such things :)

6:28 PM
@bertieb Yeah, I'm gonna try. But after a couple semesters.

Sure

@rahuldottech i only want 2 finger scrolling.

@djsmiley2k Works by default on some touchpads

reinstlaling the device has fixed itfor now
i just wish it stopped being so intermittant

@djsmiley2k Are you sure you have the latest (Win10 compatible?) driver?

6:39 PM
i have whatever win10 just installed...

Device Manager or Windows Update might not be able to find the right one, check laptop manufacturer's website

this laptop was win7
:/

@djsmiley2k That shouldn't matter. Manufacturers will still usually release drivers for future newer of Windows
Especially Windows 10, because of the whole MS push to get people off 7/8/8.1

i don't even know the model of this machine one mo

@djsmiley2k Check out the bottom of the device.

6:44 PM
Asus X5DiJ
lol

Wow that is one old device
Drivers are for XP/Vista/7
Try using the Windows 7 ones, I guess
Also, what's the touchpad model?

no no drivers.
elan something
yes, yes it is

@djsmiley2k Check Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices for model number

there's no version listed.

Ok, there's a newer version, also from 2009: dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/Touchpad/…
@djsmiley2k Click on the device > Details > Device description, or similar

6:50 PM
'Elan Input Device'

@djsmiley2k Check out the other fields?

yeah nothing with a version number or anything
ETD001
lol

@djsmiley2k Please try the two drivers I linked above. Try the second one first.

well it works again now after removing it :/

7:07 PM
@rahuldottech I have some unique insight into those screens... :P

@MichaelFrank Share 'em! I'd like to know too. It's just not for the main site.

Later, right now I need to get to work >_>

I know how the ones at Chanel work
they either use 4g or wifi or a usb key
Nintendo's ones used 4G when i worked in retail, and would always not work for us as there was no signal in the store lol

4 hours later…
@rahuldottech local lugs and hackerspaces are great places to offload hardware
