@tereško that tends to happen
They're a little like glitter

Is roota.cc down for anyone else?
cc @Burgi
Yeah, pinging it fails too

Server looks up to me

You sure?
could be my college WiFi blocking it, but I doubt it...
oh, ping is working now

Yup
I have a way to test now

4:21 AM
Let's see if I can bypass it with an alternate DNS server

That seems like a bad reason to filter

@Aibobot Language!

lmao
Yeah, no. I'm already using 1.1.1.1

(in before anyone else does it)

Ugh. Shitty blocking.
I've been meaning to set up a VPN on an old laptop I have lying around, but haven't gotten to it yet
Hm, it appears that matrix.org isn't blocked, but I can't be bothered creating a new account...
Ooh, I learned something new: reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/d3xzen/…
cc @bwDraco
Curiously enough, none of my (lesser-/un)used domains are blocked
But that's probably to be expefcted from an arbitrary blocking system

4:42 AM
Could be the tld

4:53 AM
Yikes. Take care, @US folks (@bwDraco @MichaelFrank?)
@JourneymanGeek nup, cc.cc loads for me

5:07 AM
@MichaelFrank's a kiwi ;p

OH YEAH
I completely forgot, my bad

Also draco's on a break
Might be a good idea not to ping him until he sorts things out

yeah ok

Dosen't mean we need to make it harder for him

5:30 AM
Yeah, my bad. Delete the ping message?
Also, @jou what's with the switching accounts today?

@rahuldottech I'm at work
but there's some stuff I can't access from my work PC

5:47 AM
Ahh

acually
I'm experimenting with remoting into my home PC as an alernative ;p

6:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek Do you wanna discuss that tweet of Jeff's?

@rahuldottech lol.
That one on why tech needs unions?

Yeah

Since it will not be a sweary conversation - sure

yup

6:19 AM
Whoa. He seriously thought unions exist only to maximize salaries?
Whoa. Something something first world privilege

snort
That's kinda the obvious, first layer of the problem yeah
They can also serve a useful role in protecting folks trying to do things in terms of their concience

that's more than twice what I make

@Aibobot wait, explain?

ooh

6:23 AM
Wow. I liked (still like?) Jeff, but man he comes off as really... dumb in that thread

On November 1, 2018, more than 20,000 Google employees engaged in a worldwide walkout to protest the way in which the company handled cases of sexual harassment, and other grievances. The protest came one week after a New York Times report that named Andy Rubin and other executives who had been accused of sexual misconduct. The core organizers were Claire Stapleton, Tanuja Gupta, Meredith Whittaker, Celie O'Neil-Hart, Stephanie Parker, Erica Anderson, and Amr Gaber. The walkout was organized in less than three days and lasted for a half hour. Striking workers used a flyer that read:Hi. I’m not...
@rahuldottech - they shuffled off some of the folks involved in that
@rahuldottech Tech is often built on the back of invisible folks
Jeff's kind of a rockstar - and both SE and discourse seem awesome small close knit teams
For every one of those, there's probably lots of places that are... less nice, less 'human' and occationally exploitative

I mean, I don't even really understand unions, but even I get that they assure rights aren't being violated, promote ethical and healthy workplaces, prevent and fight against discrimination, fight wrongful dismissal, etc.

Well, not even occationally...

@Aibobot yeah, I get it.

@rahuldottech those are critical roles
Also, its slightly horrifying to see your tweets liked by people you don't know ;p
But here's an interesting thing
He just got nerdsniped....
And if there's one thing about techie types... they tend to fall into rabbit holes easily ;)

6:29 AM
True

Actually a great counter example of the "rich techie" meme's in outsourcing
Unless you wanted to gatekeep tech into just devs - something I have always been very vocal against.

Yeah!
tech consists of so much more than just devs

These are two very different drives
But the results are almost the same?
So I'm guessing either the USB hub or the SATA->USB is causing a bottleneck.
Ok, not the hub
If it's the SATA->USB, there's not much I can do, since I'll be using these drives with a laptop which doesn't have any spare SATA ports
ok shit
I'm so dumb
oh god
ignore all of this please. nuke it if you want. shit I'm dumb.

Bob
10:33 AM
@rahuldottech what adapter are you using?
@rahuldottech ... ?

@Bob I... uh...
I...

Bob
don't xkcd 979 me!

I was testing the wrong drive in CDM. I didn't realize. Got confused between drive letters.

Bob
...that would do it

yeah lol

Bob
10:34 AM
if it makes you feel any better I spent a day running speedtests from a new server before realising the 4.5Mbit/s upload was due to ... a speedtest-cli bug

I wouldn't blame you for that
Okay, so. Question: I have these two HDDs that I plan on leaving plugged in to this laptop... permanently. I'm thinking I'll just leave them both on a laptop cooler and plug 'em in via the SATA->USB
Should I be worried about vibrations (from the fan or the other drive) messing with their operation?

10:53 AM
@rahuldottech I wouldn't have thought minute vibrations would make too much of a difference, but then again shouting at drives can degrade performance... You could test RW with fan on and off?

Ooh, I learned something new: https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/d3xzen/what_is_the_purpose_of_the_metal_plating_on_wd/f062744/
@bertieb ^

Yes?
Both vibration related, but I don't see the connection
Even more unrelatedly, why the heck did I suddenly get 12 video views on Tuesday at 3AM?
when my average is 0-2 per hour
PewDiePie I aint
(thank gods)

@bertieb What I gathered from that is that drives are a lot more sensitive to vibrations than I thought?
uh
Lemme just do some quick research
40
Q: How vibration sensitive are hard disk drives?

Journeyman GeekI've gotten my hands on a seriously cheap laptop grade 2.5 inch drive. I'm intending to use one on a desktop that doesn't have 2.5 inch bays as a boot drive. While I know there are adapters available, I know its fairly common with SSDs to simply velcro/tape the drive somewhere. I'm wondering if I...

Look, it's @JourneymanGeek!

Less vibrations are better
But I've never used a cooling mat dealie so can't say how vibratey one would be
I don't think I'd use a cooling mat just for a HDD anyway

@rahuldottech a lot less of an effect than one would expect from external sources

11:02 AM
hm yeah I see now

11:13 AM
HDDs in a metal enclosure? If you're worried mount them with some rubber washers in the way.
But most drive are fine until you drop them while running. The 'stop' from being dropped ~3ft onto hard surface is like 30G.
If they aren't running it's like 150g to cause damage

@djsmiley2k I'm not using any enclosures

12:09 PM
@bertieb something something cold country

1:08 PM
@rahuldottech Ambient temps shouldn't make that much of a difference to HDDs
Unless you're leaving them out in direct sunlight in the middle of the day

Must motherboard form factor i.e. micro ATX match computer case's form factor i.e. micro ATX?

1:25 PM
Or having bigger computer case than motherboard form factor is optional for optimized airflow?

1:36 PM
@bertieb Not in direct sunlight, but the room really does heat up

@rahuldottech I don't think ambient temps would be warm enough to disrupt normal passive cooling
using some vague estimates off the top of my head
how hot do the drives get?
I mean, do you think being in a warm room would be warmer than they'd get in the typical dusty, poor airflow case?
I'm not sure either way
Also, for the sake of completeness, hard drives are not something you want to aggressively cool / run freezing cold anyway (unlike say a CPU)
though I'm sure that's not what you're trying to achieve here, I just mention it for completeness
That being said, if you've run the drives fanless, found they get too warm and shut down and that introducing the fan solved the issue, I'll gladly shut up :D

@bertieb I'll measure during the day tomorrow and let you know?

Sure
Though not critical from my POV
if you want to fan 'em, fan 'em!
I don't think the effects from the airflow or vibration are going to amount to much either way
but that's a non-empirical view

@bertieb I'm pretty sure I've talked about the disk temps here before. IIRC, with the fans, I can get idle HDD temps to the 30s
(Celsius, ofc)
But we'll see tomorrow

Fair enough

1 hour later…
3:47 PM
May I ask if anyone with Visual Studio 2019 have problems with the Graphics Analyzer? As soon as I capture a frame and try to open it, Visual Studio starts to load for a very long time, just to tell me after a minute or two that "Cannot open a frame while VSGA is still shutting down". I've tried to restart Visual Studio, I've tried to restart my computer, nothing works. It worked without any problems like a week ago :(

Bob
@fighting_falcon93 You might have more luck in one of the chat.stackoverflow rooms; not many VS users in here.

Ok, will try there, thank you :)

4:20 PM
@rahuldottech DON'T. RUN. CRAP.

4:41 PM
@bertieb my drives in my desktop run at 33-35c

2 hours later…
6:54 PM
omfg i just removed the cover off what i thought was a flouestant tube light the round ones you get in a bath room?
cept here it's not, it's load of LED's instead
and now i'm litterally blind
there's thousands of dots in front of my eyes

2 hours later…
8:40 PM
well that's cool
(I've linked directly to the flight footage.)
