@MichaelFrank need a headset
@rahuldottech lol amazing

1 hour later…
9:41 AM
when the tech logs into your vm, you see them check the files, then immediately log out again :D

10:47 AM
yeah xD
ok so they entered the details into thje netplan yaml file
yet.... netplan isn't installed, ifconfig isn't installed.

could be using network manager

not installed either
:d

.....
how is it even....

/me configured the interface via IP, and added the route, and it comes up
@JourneymanGeek that I don't know

10:49 AM
the facti t was rebooted and theres no log of it being rebooted either is.... weird

but wouldn't that be non persistant?

yup
so trying to get netplan installed, so it works next time

2 words.
Ducking Fhosts.
@djsmiley2k eh

however, systemd-resolve is overwriting /etc/resolve.conf

10:50 AM
and the 'internal resolver stub' isn't working it seems
not sure how to fix

because I didn't configure any of this crap :D

Actually
ODDLY
this sounds like the default setup on my armbian bionic install

There's a FORTH way to set up networks apparently
oh wait
does systemd have a network config utility?

10:51 AM
how do I add a sane DNS entry to systemd-resolve?
4
Q: How to configure 17.10 desktop's systemd-resolve dns via terminal?

Aero WindwalkerI can do this via network setting's manual dns input field yet if I like to manage it via terminal (ssh), what may I do to accomplish this?

yey ty
systemd does everything

that's a problem
Ok, so vanilla ubuntu dosen't use systemd resolve
armbian does

o_O

So I happily go and install my router stack on it and.... dnsmasq won't start cause ... reasons

This is deffo a amd64 box lol

running what though?

10:54 AM
ubuntu something messed up by the hosting.

18.04 should use netplan out of the box
oh, they could have just built their own config

@rahuldottech cough cough

> root@localhost:/home/tim# lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
Release: 18.04
Codename: bionic
err
@JourneymanGeek k, so it looks like somehow netplan got removed.
i've reinstalled it, everything 'should be fine' now?

@djsmiley2k with netplan? Nothing is ever fine ;p

Does 18.04 normally use systemd-resolve ?

10:56 AM
I don't think mine did

weird.

cause It didn't conflict with dnsmasq

@MichaelFrank lol accepted
:)

hmmm either netplan didn't start automatically, or it's not working :D
how do I 'start' netplan D:

should have a systemctl module
one sec
ah snap
I just rupped it out
oh right

A: 18.04 - does it force netplan or can I still use resolved.conf?

heynnemaYou first have to make a decision to use NetworkManager or netplan. If you connect wi-fi to various wireless networks, then NetworkManager is probably the better choice. Netplan is best used in servers, where the configuration doesn't change much. See https://netplan.io/examples. /etc/netplan ....

there's a command called netplan apply
did you do that?
I donno what the netplan systemd module is called
I SHOULD have had documentation on that on my old PC
Thats an interesting question though
how do you know what network config system you're using?

11:05 AM
you generally don't :D
until it doesn't work
and this is why I don't like ubuntu

@djsmiley2k lots of NIH
but once you beat it into sense, it works better

@JourneymanGeek Do a package audit?

@MichaelFrank you might have the packages for the other systems anyway

they're not likely to be running though.
So a systemctl status should work, right?

11:24 AM
> What if the entire web standardized on a single browser engine?
Yeah you're fkin stupid, mate

@rahuldottech actually that nearly happened
Twas called IE

@JourneymanGeek do you still keep up with QC and JJ?

JJ?
QC, sure

@JourneymanGeek Jeph, the author

oh not the author
why?

11:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek I have more than a year of backlog to catch up on, lol

@JourneymanGeek oh nothing I just saw a tweet of his about him and his wife and the last I heard (which was a couple year ago) he'd gotten divorced so I was just wondering if he got back with her or found a new partner lol

aww
I have enough drama in real life to follow total strangers lol

Other than Adam Savage, who makes things that bring me joy, and neil gaiman, holder of the HAT, I follow very few people I don't know
I literally only got (back) on twitter cause someone asked me to tweet something witty I said on chat so he could retweet it

11:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek I've only read one Neil Gaiman book, but I loved it
What's HAT?

Its literally a Hat
Once belonged to Terry Prachett.
But its a great and glorious thing of great power and majesty.

Ahh just looked it up

(Its a bit of a joke, he always wore the hat, and when he took the long walk, he left the hat to Gaiman)

Also, my second favourite fictional death.

11:39 AM
That picture blew my mind.

All these balls are of the same color. Brown.

(The sandman/endless death's my favourite... but she's a sweetie

@JourneymanGeek yeah, I get it
@JourneymanGeek no idea what you're talking about here lol

cool thanks

11:46 AM
Sometimes I forget folks arn't exposed to the same inflluences I am

1 hour later…
12:53 PM
i prefer the discworlds death to the one in good omens

@Burgi that's my second favourite

which one?

Discworld's death was nice but a little confused
Gaiman's death was more worldly.

Q: Acknowledging comments so that they can be removed

Attie"Comments are not for extended discussion" is in my opinion a very valuable thing to imbue in the community. Occasionally I've been on one end or another of the following situation: Person A makes a comment / statement Person B leaves a comment / feedback Person A resolves the issue and wants ...

Each manufactured item, digital and otherwise, has an expected lifespan. The expected lifespan is generally higher the pricier the item, but not always. For most consumer goods, this is true. A $0.20 plastic zip-lock bag lasts you a day or two if you use it a couple times. A $2000 desktop should last 4-5 years minimum, usually longer. Smartphones are engineered to basically work for 5 years; beyond that you're extendinng its lifespan longer than it was designed to go.
Heh.

@JourneymanGeek sooooo not sure wtf system this is setup for networking with
seems to be 'none' right now
netplan try returns that it cannot bind to port 2983
Is there a coconical way that networking should b e in 18.04?
infact, I could manually configure the ip again, ssh in, take a backup of ~ and nuke it

Bob
4:42 PM
@djsmiley2k are you netplanning?
I guess the better question is why are you using netplan? ಠ_ಠ
/me is setting up smokeping

5:38 PM
5 years for a smart phone? I'll believe it when I see it

I tend to aim for 3 years.

It'll get there eventually
Same way it's happened even with gaming PCs

Bob
6:03 PM

6:49 PM
lol

7:07 PM
@Bob I'm totally not sure what the server was originally setup with
:D
So about to nuke it, start again, see if I can figure out how it should be setup
I think instead of using their 'install', I'm going to install ubuntru myself
ahnhhh i was meant to be dhcp
but looks like the dhcp client got removed lol

Bob
my smokeping isn't smokepinging :(
@djsmiley2k 18.04 default is netplan
I still prefer ifupdown :\
I mean, the idea of netplan isn't bad, per se
the execution is ... ugh.

7:24 PM
lol yeah
hmmmm not booting :D
and we're in \o/
so @bob, can i 'check' it's using netplan, some how?
is there a netplan deamon?

Bob
@djsmiley2k erm. check if netplan is installed?

Bob
idk, my experience with netplan invovled about an hour of swearing and little else :P

that it is :D

Bob
smokeping might have it beat though
y u no work

7:37 PM
hmmm any errors etc? I've never set it up but maybe i can rubber duck.

Bob
nah, I just get ... empty graphs
random github issue for a docker version of it suggests it takes an hour before it has "enough data to graph"
which makes testing a pain

oui

Bob
:\

/me ponders next steps
oh, copy ssh keys :D

8:47 PM
Right, hmmm
Should I just do all the traffic over ssh, or setup some kind of VPN :/

Bob
fixed it
running in container => fping installation failed to setcap => it doesn't automatically switch to suid like normal ping install does => the warning was hidden in the ~60-odd packages being installed
goddammit
@djsmiley2k is this a home thing?
I has fancy graphs now

9:03 PM
yes

9:36 PM
most of the time i just occassionally use it to grab some torrents and a bit of proxying :D

9:50 PM
sO WHAT'S Smokeping do?
I'm sure i've had this convo before
isn't it ping + cacti graphs??

Bob
@djsmiley2k probably but I cbf setting up cacti
I already have pandora-fms

nod, it's a bit of a pita
done it myself in the past :D
i wrote my own syslog grepping mysql+php front end once
juist to see if I could o_O
(I could).
heh and now I've found what went wrong
> ens3:
dhcp4: true
ens4:
dhcp4: true
This isn't the eth0 and eth1 you're looking for
So something caused ens3 to become eth0
and everything blew up.

Bob
:S
@djsmiley2k I'm just going to use it to log connectivity cause it went down last week
and evidence for the isp is probably a good thing
@djsmiley2k funny thing that, that's kinda the reason I was looking at ipsec :P
ssh tunnel is much easier
but less flexible?

yeah
I'm just thinking..... I'd notice if a vpn went down
not so much if I lose the ssh connectivity, as I rarely use it
The real 'important' thing I should do, is some kind of backup of the ocnfig so I can just restore it wherever

10:27 PM
I could just add the files to a git repo
That might work quite nicely
or just have some kinda backup somewhere

what does that mean D:
