Any ideas how to access remote UNC server it's currently failing with unspecified error

12:54 AM
Perhaps the server no longer exists?

@AnArrayOfFunctions ideas unspecified

Alright I'm off for another 4 days. Enjoy guys!

UK based people, where would you buy a desktop PC for a parent, who plays some games.
will require windows too i guess

@djsmiley2k depends on the games.
But for muggles - dell occationally has pretty good deals

Hmmm, not dell
need something that is almost self built
he'll want to keep his case, and such

(Heck that's what I did, found a 8th gen core i3 SFF box at a nice discount, sneakyswapped the monitor...)
that's self built for most part

I'm guessing overclockers may stil lbe the place to go
youch he's not gonna wanna spend £400.
hmmm

morning
@djsmiley2k i'd go direct to manufacturer
but PC world is not as bad as everyone thinks
especially for older people, they like to touch the products before buying
i have a win7 machine sat under the spare bed that i'd give you if you were passing manchester

8:16 AM
@Burgi not got rid of all of them?

no, i've been too busy
i want to sell all the small bits first to build reputation

@Burgi which is kinda what I suggested
Of course, got lucky, nearly 400 sgd off + they happened to have a newer, better IPS display as a (no cost) option over the TN screen which they were obviously trying to dump

Hiiiiiiiii

8:28 AM
are these all new cores or are any of them reused?

9:01 AM
all new I think

9:43 AM
All we need is cpu, psu, memory and mb really
we have storage, case, possibly a spare gpu
And my dad is very.... lets say frugal
he takes the fans out the existing case, and repairs them

@SathyajithBhat That live now ?
Because so many things on youtube say live, are old footage D:

Flux settings: Grayscale+Soft White+Vignette Mode
This feels so much less stressful on the eyes

oh noes of course I still love you
Is this the landing where, bringing it back to land it fell over.

@djsmiley2k it's on a rerun loop

10:31 AM
@djsmiley2k so... most of a PC
@djsmiley2k if you were in SG...
I'd tell you to get your <donkey> to SLS...
no small local computer stores?

10:43 AM
@djsmiley2k how about a laptop that is quick to access hard drive and ram(and maybe other parts)? people use desktops less and less nowadays. Look up HP business class laptops, the bottom comes right off in a second no screws, no prying it open. I got one for about 230 uk pounds.
UK Businesses 10 years ago with an in-house IT Department often used Dell desktops, as many of them have been easily ugpradable. Not sure what businesses do now, I think it's laptops people use.

@barlop I think he wants a place to get a drop in replacement for as little as he can get away with for an existing box ;p

in the uk a tech I spoke to recently said he often uses ebuyer ebuyer.com they have fast delivery

OH
OHHHHHHH
@djsmiley2k could start with a logical increments guide build. throw it into pc parts picker and see which retailers it suggests....
(I was terrible and my whole build was done on the basis of budget and OH SHINY!)

11:41 AM
@djsmiley2k its the previous launch
> Started streaming on Apr 11, 2019

11:56 AM
GUYS USING THE PC IN GRAYSCALE IS AMAZING

12:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek The small local computer store, is the very very dodgy computer store
my bro's found something on amazon
/me shrugs

12:34 PM
@djsmiley2k that looks like pretty much what you need

yah
i just... don't know h/w anymore
and my bro is asking me, for our dad
and I'm like ¯_(ツ)_/¯
how do you know if a cpu has a .... gfx in it
i don't even know wtf it's called

Hello - do you guys know powershell?

@djsmiley2k are you trolling? :P I can't really tell... thought you were savvier than that :P
> how do you know if a cpu has a .... gfx in it
well, if it says AMD Ryzen or Intel Core (or Pentium), 99% chance it does have an integrated GPU. there are models that don't, but usually if you're buying a whole computer, those will come with a big honking dedicated GPU to make up for the absence of an IGP (and then there are those systems that ship with both an IGP and dedicated GPU; those are probably more common than those that don't come with an IGP)
integrated GPUs will be fine for desktop tasks but definitely not something you want to game on
also I might be misremembering the Ryzen thing - they might not commonly come with an IGP unless they're in a laptop

1:09 PM
@allquixotic the last time i brought a CPU? Hexcores were brand new, and IGPU's weren't a thing.
I've not done any research at all, partly becauuse ya'll better than the web. ;P
Partly because I'm busy at work doing other stuff which i actually get paid for.

@allquixotic IIRC ryzen Gs have GPUs
the standard models don't
@bwDraco probably knows better than me ;)

So this other online community that I'm part of
Is like in war right now
As in
I don't even know how to explain this

@djsmiley2k the last time I built a PC, it was quad cores.

But it's so goddamned stupid

For that mb/cpu combo, can anyone suggest gfx cards?
light gaming duty (neverwinter nights is the current one)

1:20 PM
@djsmiley2k eh, even my old 660 could do it. So, anything midrange would work.

1:30 PM
Earlier today ^

2:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek the only problem with getting a 660 today is that Nvidia is reasonably likely to drop driver update support after a couple years -- maybe 1 or 2
if you're looking for a budget GPU today I would buy Pascal at the oldest, so a GTX 10-series; or AMD Vega at the oldest
although there aren't that many reasons to get a 1050 / 1050 Ti / 1060 vs. a 1660 when the latter is on an updated architecture and should have an even longer support life, unless there's a price difference you just can't afford

2:27 PM
@allquixotic true but that means any modern or low end card should handle about the same
and its the modern "minimum"
so its more modern counterparts should certainly begiven a hard look

3:09 PM
@allquixotic no
in case of AMD it will have a separate "Vega" sticker
or they will have a separate GPU chip

3:47 PM
so 1660 is the 'recommendation' ?
whatever that is
/me goes to google
youch
i think that's about twice the price he'd want to spend

3:59 PM
roar
A Ryzen processor with Vega graphics is designated with a G suffix.
@djsmiley2k I'd still suggest something reasonably current. Look at the GTX 1050.

thats more in the right price ange

Alternatively, consider the Radeon RX 560.
Given the age of the game, however, Raven Ridge can do this without a graphics card.
(but if you can, wait a bit for desktop Picasso, Ryzen 3xxxG, to come out, as these will benefit from a half-node die shrink to 12nm and feature a number of performance and efficiency tweaks)
It's likely that any recent Intel desktop processor can run the game as well without too much difficulty but high resolutions may still push the processor graphics beyond its capabilities.
I'd still suggest getting a GTX 1050 and upgrading later if necessary.

4:41 PM
Brazilian Presid. Bolsonaro and the ministry of education say they will no longer invest in courses such as sociology and philosophy, which means they will eliminate these courses from public Univ. They have been claiming social scientists destroyed the country and its youth.
@ThatBrazilianGuy thisisfine.jpg

@rahuldottech Thankfully I'm just some Spanish guy. No lo comprendo nada de Brasil, señor.

5:31 PM
!!foxno

lol
what about computing? :P

Or tornadology?
Oh, wait, meteorology

6:31 PM

7:14 PM
@XKCD Ah yes the old 'He was torn apart by old people' - to peices? Oh my!
@XKCD Also, Chronology?

I think "roboticist" and "inventor of the Segway" are fairly high on that

Hoplology!
