$900 per week for 1 bedroom and the building owner couldn't keep the place from being condemned? :|

for context, in a nearby suburb in the DC/Baltimore metro area, I had to pay about $3500 US for 5-6 hours of time for four HVAC technicians to perform a fairly routine install
if you're an apartment/condo owner, you're constantly shelling out that kind of money, like, daily, for heating, A/C, plumbing, door repair, locksmithing, painting the parking lot...
so skilled (high school college degree trade skills) labor in this area goes at about $150 per man-hour
repairing that place up to code might've cost $1 mil in materials and $5 mil in labor
didn't mean to write "high school college degree" -- remove "college"
the rich make everything more expensive, so people caught at the lower classes can't afford anything

Software.
Software to work around an aerodynamic limitation with the aircraft, whose airframe is not much different from the original 737.

Software to work around the fact that only getting AoA information from one sensor was not reliable.

Why? Because Boeing rushed to develop a more efficient aircraft in the wake of Airbus launching the A320neo in 2010, which had a substantial efficiency advantage over the 737.
They didn't bother to redesign the airframe. They just wanted to put newer, more efficient engines onto it and use software to compensate for the issues this resulted in.

Okay, so interesting question here.. Does Windows keep a record of mapped network drives?
Say I accidentally disconnected a mapping that I didn't know the UNC for, is that recoverable from within Windows?

@bwDraco that WSJ article is funny
"buttfly" kyboad :D

I really want a WSJ subscription, but I cannot reliably fund a $40pm subscription at this time...

@djsmiley2k ah, yes. I saw the links on the archiveteam subreddit.
@allquixotic it was really unique, yes. I liked it.
Last night
I drank for the second time in my life
I drank a vodka martini, and did eight shots
I still didn't get drunk!?

Isn't this question a valid one? superuser.com/questions/1418432.

Why do I not get drunk!?
@Biswapriyo mehhh sorta subjective, imo

4:29 AM
Actually not really

Q: Why does chlorine trifluoride ignites concrete and sand?

Nilay GhoshConcrete and sand are highly unreactive to most of the chemical attacks. But chlorine triflouride is so dangerous that it will ignite concrete, sand and other fire retarding substances. Which property does ClF3 possess to cause this ignition and why?

._.

@bwDraco i believe the nazis and later the soviets used it for rocket fuel because it has a really high specific impulse
its just a bugger to deal with

@Burgi :<
@Burgi gitextensions.github.io + interactive rebase
best client IMO, it gives you a decent UI for even the more advanced functionality and doesn't try to hide it

i think the issue comes from the fact we auto push all commits, even on feature branches

Bob
interactive rebase if you want to pick specific commits, otherwise it'll take you though every merge conflict step of a normal rebase quite well
@Burgi wait what why

because of the risk of machine failure/theft
we had a dev we only did local commits
then his machine got stolen and we lost a LOT of work because he hadn't pushed anything to remote
of course i could just be using GIT entirely wrong

Isn't this question looks like opinion based? superuser.com/questions/1418992. ??

agreed, flag it

hmmmmmm.... if I'm willing to eat the money that I'd be selling my refurb 2080 Ti for, I could get that level of performance

wtf, I just got a robocall in Chinese

Nihao

@allquixotic were they trying to get you to buy Huawei products?

@avazula that's how I knew it was Chinese :P and the very strange changes in inflection that are required for proper communication in Chinese
it sounds almost random to me when I listen to Chinese speech and there's so much inflection "jitter"
a very different language even from Japanese... I know a good bit of Japanese and inflection is only used in a few places
@Burgi not sure LOL
talked myself down from running 2 x RTX 2080 Ti in NVLink -- I just started Star Citizen was getting excellent FPS... no need for another, that's just overkill
I'd probably need a second one if I had a 4k monitor but I don't and won't so

2:50 PM
hah
@allquixotic I tend to game 1440p even with a 4k monitor or two ._.
though, its "only" a 980TI
Maybe when I get a better job, or if I'm still at this job next april...

3:14 PM
Just had an #abortedlanding coming back from #tampa on @British_Airways #747 at only 500ft due to another plane still being on the runway #Heathrow whilst we were trying to land!!! #thankgod #nearmiss #greatpilots #aviation #airplane
wonder if that was related.

related to what?

nsx not working and cosmic flares.

Anyone knows what these vertical bars at the start of each new line is? this is in LibreOffice writer, they weren't there before in the document. Now, whenever I add a new line, they appear.
And, how do I turn them off?

have you got show all printable characters turned on?

I don't remember turning them on. still do you know where it is located? in View?

3:24 PM
idk, i don't have libreoffice

this, it's in the View.

Big Mac?
3rd times a charm..... lol did she think they'd pass it?!
It means the UK has missed an EU deadline to delay Brexit to 22 May and leave with a deal.
Sooooooooo No deal, or No Brexit?

@djsmiley2k I feel like the political system of the UK is uniquely designed with your many different parties to create maximum deadlock; how else would it be possible that they vote down both P and not P (where P is any given proposition) :P
they don't want to stay; they don't want to leave; they don't want to leave with no deal; they don't want to leave with a deal

its worked fine up until now
it would have been ok if the government had started implementing the no deal plan 2 years ago
the old addage "plan for the worst, hope for the best"

3:45 PM
@allquixotic Given Trumps ability to freeze government spending it seems like the US is actually a worse design. At least in the UK government employees are still paid.

@DavidPostill it's more that when we have a split Congress (one party controls the Senate, the other part controls the House of Representatives) deadlock on budgetary issues is common
when both levels of Congress are controlled by the same party, getting a budget passed and keeping the government from shutting down isn't that hard

4:01 PM
When we have dead lock, the Queen goes on a rampage
the surviving party win.

why doesn't the Queen fix Brexit :(
"You IDIOTS! I'm 92! Just stay in the EU! Leave me alone!"

@allquixotic A possible upgrade path for Astaroth... but very likely to hit a CPU bottleneck, and kinda pushing it on a 850W power supply (when all parts are overclocked).

@allquixotic i think she wants to leave

And I'd rather wait for 7nm.
@allquixotic rofl

@allquixotic The joys of divided government: p

@allquixotic huh, a URL with commas in it. Don't see those often

6:49 PM
just read here h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/… somebody suggests that a commercial laptop would tend to have less video outputs or a graphics controller that can support less video outputs. Is that true?

1 hour later…

...and then the bald man said: "wait, those were eggs?!"

😂

@barlop Long time no see :)
Generally, this isn't the case. In fact, business-oriented laptops will often have extra video outputs like HDMI (not through a USB Type-C port, but an actual HDMI port) or even VGA because connecting to a projector for a presentation is a common use case in a business environment.

Thanks , I thoguht so, (And yeah, been a while)
