Looks like your needs are modest, since it seems like you're on shared hosting... a VPS is the natural next step up. It's a virtual machine on a larger server, with root access so you can run any application, while offering the ability to scale up and down in a matter of minutes to adapt to your needs. Dedicated servers offer the best value for applications that require maximum performance and hardware resources, as they give you a full, physical server to work with, but are harder to scale.

But if you're moving from shared hosting to a VPS or dedicated server, you'll need to learn how to properly secure your server and update and install applications, as you're now maintaining the OS and not just a website.

Got it. Anyone have a recommendation of a domain registrar that would play well with Heroku? I need to point a domain to Heroku's DNS target, which looks like "bla-bla-37235.herokudns.com". In the docs they mention that "Some DNS providers will only offer A records for root domains. Unfortunately, A records will not suffice for pointing your root domains to Heroku because they require a static IP." - that's exactly the case with the service I'm using currently.

You simply need the ability to put in a CNAME record on a subdomain. Namecheap has no problems letting me do that.

by subdomain you mean www?

Or anything before the second dot from the right, not just www.

What about the case of domain.com, without the subdomain? In A records they're signified by @ in my dashboard.

Hm, I don't understand. How would it work if there's an @ A record pointing to an IP of another server (as currently) + a CNAME record pointing to Heroku's DNS target?

very few laptops do charge off of USB-C, and the ones that do are generally IGP only, or wimpy ass dGPU... a serious dGPU can't run full tilt on USB-C and manufacturers don't want to advertise "plugging it in will slow the rate of discharge", because that's not how people think of chargers

@allquixotic: Mine does, but it's processor graphics only (albeit a relatively beefy chip).

HP doesn't advertise the capability and it actually didn't charge over USB Power Delivery out of the box, but it seems a later BIOS update enabled the feature.

So I actually have a choice between the HP 4.5mm barrel connector or USB Power Delivery. At home, I use the barrel connector because I need use the USB Type-C port for a USB hub but in the field, I'll happily charge through the Type-C port (and I have a 45W USB PD power bank on me).

I'm actually going through a full calibration cycle on this laptop's battery right now. I had completely discharged it a bit earlier and it's currently plugged into my 65W adapter (the laptop came with a 45W power adapter but that's not quite enough power to handle full load with USB devices attached).

@montrealist iirc - if there's an explicit domain name record it takes precedence over the wild card

@montrealist I don't think you can have both an A record and a CNAME record for the same @ (root domain) or subdomain. You don't want to have a CNAME record for the root domain.

Perhaps something like foo.example.com (subdomain foo) getting the CNAME record?
