Let have a IPv4 block 172.0.0.1 to 172.0.0.254. does the last octate (1 to 254) have any special name?

@Biswapriyo Yeah! It's called the "last octet"

Also known as "Part 4" of an ipv4 address

8:42 AM
In a class C network (if you are a dinosaur who does classful networking) its the host portion of the ip address

@JourneymanGeek Ya, right, "host portion" :)

ugh... the government have rejected the petition out of hand

@Burgi ?

there was a petition over the weekend to pressure the government into cancelling brexit#
it reached 6m votes

3:25 PM
@Burgi darn
That's huge
And they rejected it?
Sounds silly
oh guys I didn't tell you
I received my SE amazing stuff from the Give Away
I got a Super User sweater!
I'm wearing it right now, it's so big I'm looking like a juvenile hacker

They just arrived today and way too tight. My index finger is only 7.5 cm in circumference and these barely fit on my thinner leather gloves. On the thicker winter ones...
Uh
> My index finger is only 7.5 cm in circumference
Isn't that a bit... Much?
Ok no maybe not I just have my units messed up

4:13 PM
So, I went for shorter piping. Around 25ft*2ft*2ft of soil.

@Burgi Have they? It's still live on the website and 'awaiting a date'
Given circumstances, parliament might react differently to the government

@bertieb i heard it on the radio

Ah

@bertieb it might have been a comment from a PR person rather than official policy

@Burgi Ah, the ol' "stick your fingers in your ears and shout 'lalalalalala'" approach

Threats are never pleasant, death threats especially so

@Burgi, I can help you but you've going to need to unignore me on Matrix. Is that okay with you?

@bwDraco do you promise not to monologue?

nods
You have my word.
(it helps that I've set up a dedicated room for personal growth discussion)

6:13 PM
Guys! I just wrote an article. I'd really appreciate any and all feedback.

6:44 PM
Hi, is it ok to ask for a hosting service recommendation here?

@montrealist You can ask (here in chat - not on SU), but you aren't guaranteed replies.

@montrealist It's off-topic for the main site, but feel free to ask here in chat.

That said, I've personally been using gridhoster.com since I was 13 12, and I'm very happy with their services.

I've been a Linode customer for more than five years.
(referral link available upon request)

@montrealist considering half the room run their own servers.... Go ahead ;p

6:55 PM
I've been hosted on OVH for a number of years after using Hetzner for a bunch
and I think TOWMN and Bob use online.net

I do too - thought they renamed to scaleway
Was using buyvm before that

online.net, scaleway, same company
my need was "cheapest high-RAM server in North America with plenty of CPU power too"

Looks like your needs are modest, since it seems like you're on shared hosting... a VPS is the natural next step up. It's a virtual machine on a larger server, with root access so you can run any application, while offering the ability to scale up and down in a matter of minutes to adapt to your needs. Dedicated servers offer the best value for applications that require maximum performance and hardware resources, as they give you a full, physical server to work with, but are harder to scale.
But if you're moving from shared hosting to a VPS or dedicated server, you'll need to learn how to properly secure your server and update and install applications, as you're now maintaining the OS and not just a website.

Got it. Anyone have a recommendation of a domain registrar that would play well with Heroku? I need to point a domain to Heroku's DNS target, which looks like "bla-bla-37235.herokudns.com". In the docs they mention that "Some DNS providers will only offer A records for root domains. Unfortunately, A records will not suffice for pointing your root domains to Heroku because they require a static IP." - that's exactly the case with the service I'm using currently.

@montrealist Namecheap.

7:02 PM
@bwDraco heard that name before, will look into them, thanks!

You simply need the ability to put in a CNAME record on a subdomain. Namecheap has no problems letting me do that.

by subdomain you mean www?

Or anything before the second dot from the right, not just www.

What about the case of domain.com, without the subdomain? In A records they're signified by @ in my dashboard.

That's not a problem.

7:10 PM
Hm, I don't understand. How would it work if there's an @ A record pointing to an IP of another server (as currently) + a CNAME record pointing to Heroku's DNS target?

very few laptops do charge off of USB-C, and the ones that do are generally IGP only, or wimpy ass dGPU... a serious dGPU can't run full tilt on USB-C and manufacturers don't want to advertise "plugging it in will slow the rate of discharge", because that's not how people think of chargers
@allquixotic: Mine does, but it's processor graphics only (albeit a relatively beefy chip).
HP doesn't advertise the capability and it actually didn't charge over USB Power Delivery out of the box, but it seems a later BIOS update enabled the feature.
So I actually have a choice between the HP 4.5mm barrel connector or USB Power Delivery. At home, I use the barrel connector because I need use the USB Type-C port for a USB hub but in the field, I'll happily charge through the Type-C port (and I have a 45W USB PD power bank on me).
I'm actually going through a full calibration cycle on this laptop's battery right now. I had completely discharged it a bit earlier and it's currently plugged into my 65W adapter (the laptop came with a 45W power adapter but that's not quite enough power to handle full load with USB devices attached).

@montrealist iirc - if there's an explicit domain name record it takes precedence over the wild card

@montrealist I don't think you can have both an A record and a CNAME record for the same @ (root domain) or subdomain. You don't want to have a CNAME record for the root domain.
Perhaps something like foo.example.com (subdomain foo) getting the CNAME record?

7:47 PM
@bwDraco @JourneymanGeek thank you both!

Ooh what's happening to brexits now

#BloodForTheBloodGod

Parliament says they're in control, not the government
Could have interesting implications in the long run- a stronger representative body (see also: growing importance of committees) at the expense of the government, with the Speaker moderating the two
or it all could go back to business as usual
#averybritishrevolution

a friend of mine has mention that pre-ww1 the legislature controlled the bills

10:41 PM
Interesting
