Bob
12:00 PM
@Hennes How much did that cost?

I got a good boot disk. spinnign rusty as archive and a SATA SSD for the rest. That SSD got full so I replaced it with something twice its size.
400 euro
well, 399 with free shipping

Bob
760P is TLC
660P is QLC?

And it should work well enough once osed as intended.
As in. QLC with READ (up to 1800/MB/sec) and small writes.
QLC really does not like continious writes
Grabs bill since now I am confused

Bob
oof, the 2 TB 660P is 600 AUD

1 x Intel® 760p Serie, 2.0 TB SSD

Bob
12:02 PM
meanwhile a 1 TB 860 EVO is 225 AUD
@Hennes are you sure it's 760?
what's it say on the box?
or on the drive?
or in the OS?
says TLC here

In the OS it is a intel SSD PEKKW020T8.. thank s Intel, that is helpful

Bob
should be TLC

hmm, then I guess I misremembered. I spent a lot of time looking at SSD, TLC and QLC

Bob
@Hennes what does it say on the box?

And briefly at MLC, but 2TB MLC is not something easy to find in an offordable state

Bob
12:05 PM
or on the drive?
or in SMART info?
something stinks, cause TLC shouldn't dip to 2 MB/s

Drive is in a desktop. need to open that
Box has Intel 2 .0TB 760p Serie
Ditto label on drive. (just look at desktop
Very spiky read write though.
And windows seems to lag accasionally for a few seconds (on a skylake desktop)

Bob
hrmmm
maybe do a proper write test (benchmark)
cause copying files could have other factors

Ah, out of free memory. That is probably the lag spike

Bob
that would do it, yes

Fresh boot 10 minutes ago, after a full shutdown.
4-5 GB in use. about 27GB is standbye. Free 0MB
hmm 28GB mapped file. YEah, that will consume some of the memory

12:16 PM
@JourneymanGeek @MichaelFrank
Went to at least three dozen stores
No one had anything suitable
Finally got a bunch of misc screws from a tailor

Whut. A tailor?

Bob
@Hennes please tell me you don't have paging disabled

I strongly doubt that I have paging disabled, but let me check
Automatically manage the .... Seems to be on
I actually had to think before I remembered where that setting was.
I've been doing dataanayst work for so long that I know excel better than windows 10

Bob
hm
maybe the memory mapped file is also locked into physical ram
though that'd be odd

12:24 PM
I have had that a few times in the past. 2-3 times per year when updating or downloading a large steam game
Windows shutdown did not help with that. (at least not the default one)
shutdown /s /f /t 0 used to work for that though

It's killing me
I could've got this stuff from eBay easily
But no. Bloody idiots shut down eBay
I'm so mad
I want to break something

Good evening

12:41 PM
/me reads all the old stuff about floppy drives, and IDE and steals @JourneymanGeek's rocking chair. That is my chair on my lawn you youngster. :)

@Hennes snort

ok, 47 Y.o. here. Not quiet rockign chair time

I'm explaining to a 16 year old the difference between pata and floppy cables. On one hand, I was that kid once. On the other... when did I get so old?

But I did use floppy on my adaptec 154CF ISA SCSI card. :)

😂

12:43 PM
@Hennes I guess one isn't really old till you forget more than those whippersnappers have ever learned ;p

I remember my first PC style drive. MFM
So you really had cables to each of the (up to 4) drives. One for the raw connection to a to the data heads. And a control one (- I am at track zero. -move inward or outward. - move track)
Back when you had to reformate drive when you moved them to a new PC

ya. That might be a little older than what I'm used to

386SX-16MHz. Windows 2.01

I had an XT clone. Everything else was 'modern' IDE
and I didn't build the XT
well or the 486
but pretty sure it was IDE

I stiull got hernia (the portable ibm XT. Proper 4.77GHz, 2x360k, build in CRT)
Not that I turned it on in the last decade

12:46 PM
iirc some japanese made thing
can't remember the brand

I never had branded computers. Always build from component

Was too young

Usually grabbed from shops just over the border in germany, since that was much cheaper

the XT was... some japanese company, the 486 was a IPC

Well, I had amiuga's. I guess those were brand name computers

12:47 PM
amusingly IPC is a property holding company
everything else - from my PII 233, I built

@Hennes MHz please, you're confusing me

@JourneymanGeek I'm the kid in question. I'M SEVENTEEN. Thanks for all the help tho.

Bob
I'm just glad we've gotten past the CD drives that jammed (and slipped a gear) if you looked at them funny
Or breathed too loudly the next room over

why not KHZ? (C64 at 980KHz)
980 is a much larger number then 3.5, so my C64 (980KHz) should be much faster than my desktop (I5 6600k, 3.5 GHz). Right?

that said, computers got more legs

12:49 PM
There. clockbait posted

My dad's laptop lasted 11 years.

Heh, that is long.

then the backlight failed.

Best I used is Dell E6500 from Feb 2009.

so I swapped the HDD into my old laptop.

12:49 PM
Battery is getting iffy though
the replacement battery that is.

I'm pondering frankenstining my old laptop and my dad's one
they're the same model. Mine has a slightly broken mouse and a case in worse condition

I did that a few times in the past. I stopped doingit once my free time became worth more than the time invested.

and I've ordered him a new dell (I don't have the time to build him a PC)

Though it was fun doing those kind of things

which is kinda the point
and my job does leave me with decent chunks of free time

12:51 PM
Yeah, ditto
I did enjoy it when I earned a lot less and had a lot more free time though

lol
I still enjoy it lol
though, I might be looking at a new job soon soooooo

Oh, and R61
Sister uses a R61 or a T60
Not sure which of the two
The one without audio

my dad's laptop is a R61

*1: Where uses is - she has one and might turn it on once per year

both have audio. The R series was lower end than the T series
@Hennes every. single. day

12:54 PM
Dad had one without working audio.
The IT guy fixed it by replacing the laptop. Then my sister got the old laptop since IT did not want it back

And now dad somehow has got a new laptop and I dod not know if there has been another move
I do not support my dad with IT iissues.

funny thing is I got windows 10 on it
and an SSD

I tried.. And he dooes not listen

I was sneaky

12:55 PM
So we hire someone (a 50 euro per hour) to say precisely the same.
And then dad does listen
Win10 in AHCI or in IDE mode?

AHCI mode
I upgraded to 7, then 10 because of the SSD

I tried that on the Dell and failed. I did not find the right ICH drivers

more ram would be nice but hey, I have a laptop with a dead display

I maxed out the RAM ages ago. To 4GB

of course the 7 licence was dodgy, but the electronic licence worked on a reinstall...
I can get this to 2

12:56 PM
And I had a legal fresh win 10 (for EUR 31)
And no legal win7 since the laptop shipped with Vista
So it was either that or boot from a eSATA pendrive with XP on it
Which was what we used at work on these laptops, though from internal HDD and no from a pendrive
Back then the throttle pendrives were fun

1:26 PM
I WALKED 10,000 STEPS LOOKING FOR SCREWS WHAT IS MY LIFE

BUT WOULD YOU WALK A THOUSAND MORE?

Do the screws help you turn off CAPSLOCK? :)

@Hennes Well the screws are for his keyboard ...
6 hours ago, by rahuldottech
It appears the last guy I gave this keyboard to to change the keys stole all the screws?

So... is that a yes?

@NordlysJeger It's a music keyboard
A very expensive one.

1:33 PM
oh

@Hennes pfft
I hold my shift key down.

play this note to sign a.
Move up one octave to capitalize the letter. :)

@JourneymanGeek Sticky keys is easier :)

@DavidPostill I disable caps lock on every keyboard I use

Oh, disc copy completed
so 1TB takes 2H
So about 142MB/sec
on avarage
Rebooting to free up memory

2:13 PM
That seems to be the same speed as 4K write from Crystal disk

2:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek it appears that the screws I got will work well enough :)

excellent

@JourneymanGeek YEE

@MichaelFrank Wanna help me figure out how to get AUX out jacks working on this?
So, I found service manuals for two other keyboards with very similar AUX OUT circuits
Might be able to figure out the components from those

I have an SSD as my main and only drive. The other drive in the laptop is a 1-GB Seagate, completely empty. Why on earth do I hear it work each time I start some task?

9:51 PM

10:05 PM
@bertieb I raise your moon, a closer moon.

Aye, I didn't get a chance till it was way high in the sky
Oh well
Was that shot handheld?

10:30 PM
@bertieb Indeed.

11:08 PM
Facing an issue with current laptop, folder operations are visible only after refresh.
Create New Folder, Rename, Copy, Cut/Move are all happening when I do them, but not registering visually on screen without refreshing.
What could be the issue? This is an office laptop, btw. (ie, no backups)
