UGH
UGHGHGHGHGHHGHGH
Second last exam

Woof?
Ah

Last exam is CS, so that will be ok
But today will be
laiauanwlidwhsdhneiuf
I mean. I just hope they don't kick me out of the school or something? I didn't do any studying in Bhutan, like a blithering idiot
Man
Wish me luck, ya'll
Can't afford to fail
Ok bye going now
see ya

12:56 AM
@rahuldottech You'll do alright. Believe in yourself.

1:06 AM
okay question aynoen
I need something faster then a virtual machine that is mobile to go with Windows
I am planning to have a second laptop running in my bookbag
that ideally autoconnects to the same wifi I am on so samba and ssh into the linux machine

So what are you trying to do with a SAMBA share, that you can't do with a portable USB HDD?

@MichaelFrank the samba is to access the linux files
I could do that through ssh also
I have / mounted on samba

ehh
WSL might work

but how do I get them on the same wifi?

by understanding how WSL works ;)
and you don't need a VM on the same wifi connection either

1:16 AM
lol so you are saying to use WSL instead of linux if I understand you correcttly.

and what you're trying to do matters
WSL is linux
running inside windows

WSL does not support all my favorite programs
mathematica doesn't work

buuuut right now your question is slightly unclear

sudo apt install <x>
doesn'tt always work

"faster than a VM" - I have physical machines slower than a VM

1:18 AM
Basically is there any way to have 2 computers connect to the same WIFI network?
automatically maybe using bluetooth?

Yes. You connect both systems to the same wifi network.

that requires me to bring out 2 laptops
hardly a good solution
I gave up on configuring windows to connect to 2 wifi networks after a while

keeping a laptop inside a bag will kill it anyway ;)

that's a fair point
Okay back to my original plan
of strapping a tablet to the back of my laptop screen
then I use the touchscreen to set up linux to the network
and Windows to actually use everything
The problem I am having is there appears to be no way to control a machine through ssh let's say a raspberry pi when I don't no ahead of time which wifi it is going to connect to

hm
add a second wifi adaptor (optional?) set up hostapd on that adaptor. Connect to your vaguely useless hotspot to configure? ;)

1:22 AM
does windows work with 2 wifi adapters because I fail to see how to use it

linux will I think
windows might for letting you connect in
But really we can show you were the fish are
You need to cast the line yourself ;)

what do you mean connect in?

so.. linux box has 2 wifi adaptors

yes

One's set up with hostapd and is known.
One is not.
So you ssh into the known one, then use that to set up the pc as a repeater or simply to connect to wifi
So you always have a "known" IP address and SSID

1:26 AM
hmm if only bluetooth made this easier

a cheap, tiny 2.4 ghz only dongle costs less than a fancy coffee

then that would work really well
I have one sitting next to me

well, work it out
points @William at google ;)
I've given you what you need to start.
Go do it.

so one would be broadcasting a wifi network and the other would be for actually connecting to the internet?

Then post a self answered SU question on how you did
@William kinda.
but you could also set up the system to bridge the two so your linux box acts like a repeater

1:28 AM
that is a really cool idea actually
how about mac windows a repater

and linux always connect to that

go research ;)

Q: Missed flight but no visa to get a hotel

stuart stevensonLet's say I am flying from country A to country C via country B. What happens if, due to airline error, I am delayed in country A and miss my connection to country C and the next flight is the next day? I must be allowed a hotel paid for by the airline but then I won't have a visa to exit in co...

This is basically the plot from The Terminal.

1:40 AM
Yea, wrong movie ha
I quite enjoyed The Terminal though... might need to watch it again soon.

1:58 AM
I rearranged the keys on my Japanese keyboard to be Dvorak

@MichaelFrank the real life insperation's story is even stranger

couldn't I have a liquid cooled computer in my book bag journeyman

18 years is a long time...

@William if you need to ask

@JourneymanGeek The correct answer is "sure, and please post pics when you attempt it!"

2:03 AM
True
actually If you had a USB PD powered NUC class machine, a custom heatsink mount, and a fake leg...
(NUC makes more sense than a laptop since you're going to be able to have a little more space to work with...)
and IIRC you can 3d print tops for intel NUCs

what is a fake leg

(USB PD since you could power it off a prosthetic leg power bank)
You'd need to tap 12V for the AIW heat sink pump and fan too

2:21 AM
lol journeyman you quoting guardians of the galaxy is hilarious
I love the new movie
when Dr. Strange is like
"What master do you serve?"

Full circle ;) Rocket Raccoon was inspired by James Gunn's dog

@allquixotic We often get whatever right click context menu was last clicked on just sorta stuck on top of everything.

journeyman chewbacca was inspired by george lucas dog

@Dog it arrived!!

(that's from NFCtools. Two things, firstly check out the default info, and second, that there's this cool extended screenshot feature I didn't know about)

I'm geeking out so bad

morning

Morning

7:35 AM
@rahuldottech why have you bought a TV aerial?

@Burgi It's a 2.4Ghz Yagi Antenna
For wireless fun hackery

it looks like a tv aerial

A Yagi–Uda antenna, commonly known as a Yagi antenna, is a directional antenna consisting of multiple parallel elements in a line, usually half-wave dipoles made of metal rods. Yagi–Uda antennas consist of a single driven element connected to the transmitter or receiver with a transmission line, and additional "parasitic elements" which are not connected to the transmitter or receiver: a so-called reflector and one or more directors. It was invented in 1926 by Shintaro Uda of Tohoku Imperial University, Japan, and (with a lesser role played by his colleague) Hidetsugu Yagi.The reflector element...
That's because TV aerials use the same tech

i take it you are going to do warwalking or similar?

@Burgi I can do anything with it
Like
SO MUCH

7:46 AM
all ethical and above board though right?

Sure, war walking too, but it's highly directional, so not really the best for that
@Burgi duh. Long range wireless projects with Arduino and whatever
Anything that operates on 2.4Ghz
(most household products do)

or stick it on the roof and wifi while communing with the leeches.

@JourneymanGeek leeches?

leeches.
They suck

Wait. What do they have to do with WiFi? I'm not getting the joke.

7:50 AM
More the joke about sitting far away and wifiing

Connected to USB WiFi card: rahul.party/files/IMG_20180926_131813-4677.jpg Connected straight to laptop WiFi card: rahul.party/files/IMG_20180926_131510-7286.jpg
@Dog
@JourneymanGeek ah, but it's unfortunately not great for that, since it's not omnidirectional

you just need to find the ideal spot to commune.

I do live on a terrace though. I can probably get into anyone's WiFi network within the neighborhood. Not that I'm going to try or anything. I just could. Hypothetically. If I wanted to. Which I don't.
Totally never crossed my mind before, no sir, never.
I love how the old laptop has a panel at the bottom which gives me direct access to the laptop WiFi card

SOunds like my work HP
@rahuldottech that would be fun where I live
I could try the next building
or the wireless@sg installation at the resident's committee

@JourneymanGeek Get one? I bought an imported one off of amazon, and it only cost me like 22 USD

7:55 AM
naw
I had a uncompleted woktenna for ages
too many projects ;)

OKAY DUDES
LISTEN
So... I connected my WiFi card to my set too box's satellite dish cable with my newly acquired connectors
AND IT STARTED CATCHING LIKE SIX NETWORKS EHICH I'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE

i think you need to lay off the caffeine. you've been far too excitable since you started living alone

It's very possible that it's the long satellite cable dish doing the signal catching and now the actual dish tho
Still pretty cool
Thoughts, @Dog?
@Burgi yeah. Last exam on Friday. Not gonna touch them again
Till the next batch of exams, that is
That is, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, April
Basically for a week each month

that is a lot of exams

8:20 AM
@Burgi Yeah
++practicals
++exam entrance exams

@MichaelFrank I gete that, only with Lync
but as now lync is gone... \o/

2 hours later…
11:15 AM
Afternoon o/
We're having a bit of an influx of spam at the mo'. On the spamfighting side, MetaSmoke is down at the moment and SmokeDetector instances are being shuffled around, so there isn't as good cross-network visibility, handling and auto-nuking going on. If you have the flags to spare, flag the obvious spam! The 'active' list is a good place to catch them, as are review queues :)

11:43 AM
@Bob tbh that dude scares me a little

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wonder how Kali always gets the ... ah ... beginners

@Bob its a bit like croching tiger hidden dragon
They assume the tools give them power, when it is the user who gives the tools power.

12:09 PM
@bertieb I was half expecting Geek to reply with "its being addressed" or "its been addressed"

@allquixotic Hehe :-P
It is being addressed over in CHQ, but MetaSmoke is still down :-\

@allquixotic actually - I asked him to mention it here
also I'm not really involved in SD, and this is one of the critiques I have of it.

._.
Well more that its so efficient, people get out of practice doing it the old fashioned way ;)

(from their own room topic :D)

12:16 PM
(cue "RUNNING WATER MAKES PEOPLE WEAK!")

Heh, aye
I know what you mean

@allquixotic sometimes I think people assume I work here ;)
or have some secret knowledge of what's happening....
;)

The curse of being too good at what you do, everyone expects you to do and know everything

@bertieb happens at work too

@JourneymanGeek I can believe it!

12:18 PM
;p
@bertieb well, I just use search on outlook. A lot.
likewise with whatsapp
(here its meta? ;p)
+++ a good memory

I have a couple of friends who despair at the incompetence of some folks they work with... I sometimes wonder 'Are they actually bad at job squintingfry.jpg or just not wanting to get a reputation as being good'
Ah, the curse of a good memory

Oh its more here
like that conversation with Draco about SE emails probably pulled in a half dozen things ;p

Cache refresh, you say

12:43 PM
Well, some of it I donno if its public - but the main thing being SE using a different domain for automails
and people getting confused by it

12:53 PM
Oh, part of that survey that I shouldn't of got, thing?

and nearly everything else ;)

1:21 PM

I think I just wrote this for a spam question D:

A: Start VirtualBox VM with GUI on Windows 10 system boot after auto-login

djsmiley2kAfter a little bit of googling I found the answer to this - it's a combination of two other things which combined give you the outcome you want. VM's can be started automatically via calling VBoxManage.exe from the correct folder. On my system this is C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox So if yo...

I found a way to connect. The SSH server was not enabled. — SuperUserJL 3 hours ago
ROFL @Bob @JourneymanGeek

2:17 PM

GOOMHR!

3:13 PM
@Bob Finally got around to installing ssh on the PC with the boot issues

Bob
Hm?

Had to do so through cygwin though, since win7 doesn't have a native server

Bob
Uh. Yes it does.
We use it at work.

@Bob windows 7 has a native ssh server??
Ofc not. You need open ssh.

Bob
It's the same one that runs on 10.
It's created by Microsoft.
It runs on Win32 proper, not a POSIX layer.
It's native.

3:17 PM
@Bob Nowhere in my google searches did I learn that it works on versions other than windows 10. That's good to know, thanks.

Bob
@rahuldottech We use it at work on the sole remaining 7 box :P

@Bob I like 7

Bob
Bleh. I can't wait for that box to be replaced.

@Bob haha, why?

Bob
@rahuldottech It's slow, unreliable and generally a pain to use.
We keep it around for some legacy software and to have an IE11/Win7 test machine.

3:19 PM
@Bob Just that box in particular, or 7 in general?

Bob
@rahuldottech A little from column A, a little from column B.
The slowness is largely that box.
The unreliability is partially because of 7.
The pain to use is a combination of the slowness and the lack of some useful QoL improvements in 8/10.

@Bob The reason I'm on 7 is because this PC is a 2006-era laptop, and win10 very probably won't work on it

Bob
@rahuldottech Yea, sometimes it does work out that way.
Doesn't mean I don't get annoyed by missing functionality.
Got pretty annoyed at a 2008R2 server today because of the old conhost.
No line copying/reflow, no easy way to resize horizontally...

1 hour later…
4:45 PM
Doesn't Microsoft give free remote access for "web developers" to every version of IE on every supported version of Windows still?

@Bob doesn't come win 10 preinstalled with IE11?

Bob
@NordlysJeger It does, but there's subtle differences.
When a good chunk (but thankfully shrinking) of your customers are on a platform, you kinda need to test that platform.

Bob
@CanadianLuke Not remote last I checked; downloading a local VM every 90 days is a huge pain on Australian internet; and we need to test against local servers so remote doesn't really work anyway.
We do use BrowserStack but sometimes you just need that full OS.

I remember a few years ago, Microsoft would release Remote Desktop App packages for virtually every version of IE. It would connect, for free, to one of their data centers in the USA, and let you browse the web virtually unrestricted

5:20 PM
@CanadianLuke heh. "open proxies" like that are quite rare but Google also has that Data Saver tool for Chrome, and Opera has their own data saver proxy thing

Mmkay

dunno how they keep those services afloat with the potential for abuse
the potential is over 9000

nom nom Coca cola

Okay so I connected the yagi antenna to an old lamp which has a sturdy base and frame
And now I can keep it pointed at targets
@NordlysJeger you chew coke?

5:24 PM
of course, you don't? add a bit of gelatine and you're good to go
;)

is that your's?

@NordlysJeger Nah, my stuff is at rahul.red

5:47 PM
Uh, ignore this link, just abusing chat: null-byte.wonderhowto.com/how-to/…

(@JourneymanGeek :P)

@rahuldottech Ha, that's blocked on my work network -.-

I hope this article is useful for newbies who are getting their heads messed up with VMs instead of just booting up Kali and getting their heads messed up by using Kali. (emphasis mine)

@NordlysJeger It has nothing to do with VMs, but ok

I read the article, but saw this at the end

5:55 PM
@Bob Well, I can't break into WiFi networks on Win, and I can't be bothered to install all necessary packages on Ubuntu

it's copied straight from the text

Bob
...ok that one actually is flaggable for illegal activity

@Bob my own network, of course :P
@NordlysJeger ohh

1 hour later…
7:07 PM
I normally get like 3 networks within range
I attached the antenna and
BAM! 32!

Turning Stolas into a desktop replacement.
Why waste energy running Astaroth for lighter tasks that don't need discrete graphics, 8 cores, or 32 GB of memory? The Demon needs 70+ watts at idle.
My biggest complaint is that if Dell S2417DG is set to HDMI mode, and Astaroth is accidentally powered on (e.g. an errant keyboard press), the system will not be able to enumerate the display, causing it to switch to the cheap Acer monitor on the left. I'd have to put it to sleep and wake it up again after switching to the DP input before it'll work.

7:41 PM
@bwDraco heh, I only use Unnamed Random Cobbled Together High-end Desktop for games like Star Citizen, UE4 games like ARK and the like... most everything else runs smoothly on the 1070 Max-Q on Unnamed Upgraded Razer Blade 15 (2018) with 32 GB of RAM and a 2 TB 870 EVO

lol

8:11 PM
FWIW... if the DP input is inactive, is it normal for the system to not be able to enumerate the display? I'm used to seeing systems being able to get EDID or other display data even if the display is powered off. (Relevant: This is a NVIDIA G-SYNC display.)

@ThatBrazilianGuy What is it?

8:41 PM
A dog, obviously
Or a tennis ball

@allquixotic /me steals that SSD

> AMD EPYC is a superior the only suitable upgrade choice
lol
That's... a rather grandiose claim.

@Dog it's a nice SSD

@Dog (@allquixotic) FWIW, I have a 960 PRO in my desktop. The laptop's stock SSD is an SK hynix PC401.

Dog
10:40 PM
Wait are we talking about the 860 or the 970? Apparently there's no such thing as the 870

my reputation is 666!!! score!

Dog
Crikey, Samsung's 860 EVO M.2 1TB is $169.99 on the Samsung US website.
1TB SSD for $169.99... o_0
It's £196 here... $258 equiv.
It'd be cheaper for me to use my flight vouchers to fly two people to the US and buy one each and bring them back, than buying them in the UK :-|

BREXIT rule :(

11:27 PM
Hmm, I'm either getting disturbingly good at this, or I died and this is all my imagination
