i haven't seen @ThatBrazilianGuy in a while....

W..was he Dr. Bumbum? :-o
His girlfriend was arrested due to guilt by association, will we all be arrested too? For his bummy endeavours? o_0

@Burgi Yeah I died a while ago.

i rest my case

@Burgi On a bench or on a table?

he's taking a year off dead for tax purposes

i'm too drunk to talk tax codes
You seem to be obsessed with taxes. Is that a sign of... guilt? What have you done, @Burgi?

got drunk

And then committed tax fraud? Blame it on the booze?

1:12 AM
this happens a lot

!!caaaaaaaaaat

its why the doors and drums of washing machines are restricted in size (to prevent children from becoming trapped)

Seriously?
I've always wondered why there's that retarded lock
But why would even a drunk person put their taxes in the washing machine?

money laundering

1:43 AM
Great... Now I have to secure the door of my front loader when I get home. :|

@MichaelFrank i think modern ones have anti-child protections built in

I was actually considering just having it turned off at the wall all the time.

@DavidPostill how?

@MichaelFrank No. Upvotes that don't count because I've rep capped :)
I'm well on target to repcap 4 days running ... :)

you are on course for 100k

11:18 AM
@Burgi :)
And about to go up a place in the all time rankings :)

:O ALL TIME \o/
I wanna knwo where I stand in them

12:01 PM
I wish the bot said when the regulars ranked up/down ;)
'@Bertieb reached a new high rank of #8'

lol
but half the fun is checking up on the leagues

I don't even know where to look lol

@djsmiley2k Unlikely, but I appreciate the optimism in your highly-theoretical example :P
Has anyone ever had a monitor repaired? The kinda-dodgy one I have is getting more dodgy

@bertieb I've ... done it before.
Almost not worth the effort though
dodgy how?

I've done cap replacements on a HannsG before, but that was a widely known issue (widely known enough to have replacement capacitor kits sold, at any rate)
Well, there's the "not turning back on if it's been off for a short while"
Dec 13 '17 at 10:25, by bertieb
@MyDaftQuestions Probably a different cause, but I have a dodgy monitor that won't turn back on right away if it is turned off. If it's been off for 20 minutes (say) it'll turn on grand, but even a reboot is enough to make it refuse to turn on. It eventually comes to life after a short while.

12:10 PM
If you can check up what panel it is, you could probably swap out the entire controller - njutouch sells em, they're a bit "generic" and you might need some jerryrigging

But now it's not displaying output even though the backlight is on
Or it will display for a brief while- say, after a reboot
(the status messages like "no input detected" show fine)
@JourneymanGeek Ooh, sounds potentially promising- is there a way to check without opening it up? I've got it on a three-way monitor stand which would capsize if I take it off (need to find a counterweight I guess)

alas no

It's one of the cheap Korean 2560x1440 27" dealies
Well, relatively 'cheap' anyway

Not sure I have the skills to fix, but I guess I don't have much to lose now
I mean, the not-turning-back-on I could live with
(just hit source selection if I need to keep it awake across a reboot)
But if it doesn't actually display anything it's not terribly useful as a monitor
Ho hum

12:50 PM
@DavidPostill Siri/Google Assistant would be very confused
In 3 kilometers, turn right on M-795 towards Tryleghor.
Turn right towards Bechan.
In 500 meters, keep right towards Trylec.
Keep right towards Trillet.
In 1 kilometer, take a sharp left turn towards Tryled.

you could try looking mup the model and see if anyone else has done it?
ship it to dave ;D

question
let's say you have shortcuts in a folder on a Windows OS. These shortcuts link to files, which are in a different folder

@allquixotic welsh is special like that
all would be pronunced the same.

let's say now that I want to change the source folder path

other than Bechan and Trillet.
the rest I can 'hear' as sounding the same.

1:01 PM
is there a way to change the direction of the shortcuts to the new path of the source folder
?

@AndyK 'direction' ?
do you mean destination?

yes destination

right click shortcut - properties

@djsmiley2k not for one, but for all of them as a one off change
I'm tired, I want to eat some candies...
oops wrong chat room

1:07 PM
@djsmiley2k one of my catch phrase

@AndyK Are the shortcuts lnk files?
Wrap this in some more scripting :)

1:32 PM
@DavidPostill yes they are

@Burgi why are you using sourcetree?

1:50 PM
@Hakase why not?
i've tried other clients and they've all been crap or lacking critical features

2:48 PM
That's why I got confused
and I was looking at that

3:05 PM

My SSD arrived! \∆/

@Burgi I was just wondering why yes
I've been using msvs builtin git functionality since it started working and then I ditched sourcetree
also
they updated sourcetree at some point and it got worse and worse with GUI, icons and then broke some core functionality, made it corrupt the repos, it was a giant mess
I stayed on the latest version which satisfied all my needs, and then I switched from it completely to msvs
I think it was like 1.8.3 or something
have you had any problems with it?

we are ditching the .NET stack so we aren't using VS any more

oh
there's still vs code and SQL ops studio which I think both have builtin git support

@Hakase not since 1.2 or something

3:15 PM
do you use SSMS or do you not use any ms products?

Bloody hell! The SSD is so light!

@Hakase we do for now but we moving all our sites over to LAMP stack.

the server licensing costs are one of the reasons prompting our move

idk if it's gonna be of any use there but have you seen sql ops studio?
I think it's extensible and supports any flavor of sql you install into it
same as vs code supposedly, since it follows the same ideology
idk if you guys have microsoft over there, I just don't know any other software at this point as well as theirs

3:19 PM
i use mysql workbench

looks cool and good

for our agency we just can't afford the server licensing, hence the move to linux

@rahuldottech can't shoot it at the wall?
I recently bought an m.2 ssd and I thought it was gonna be as big as a ram stick (it was twice smaller )

unless a client specifically asks for .NET we are sticking with php

alright, I have 0 knowledge of php, so no comments there

3:23 PM
@Hakase It's absolutely ridiculous, but I still use it, simply because it's already present on like every server out there, and it's really not difficult to learn at all
In fact, it's wayyyy easier than C++, the other programming language which I use predominantly

and cheaper

idk if you can use c++ in web dev
I thought it's mostly js
and c# if you're into asp.net

@Hakase No you can't

php is the most popular serverside scripting language

I mostly do desktop apps and backend services so I wouldn't know

3:25 PM
@rahuldottech thats because php is a higher level language. it runs in an abstract layer

if you find a better gui git client let me know

3:48 PM
@Hakase You definitely can use C++ for web dev, and in fact Google uses it extensively, but I wouldn't actually recommend it for that.

@ToxicFrog Really? I've only seen this one website do it. And they claim that the webpages are "generated" with C++, so idk if it's realtime
HUH

Q: C++ web development

Will03ukI understand that as C++ isn't dynamic, its not seen as a particularly great base to build a website, but I believe it partly falls down to support. Are there any servers that run C++ programs as like a root, for example node.js creates the server and then handles all requests that go to the root...

@djsmiley2k Not sure why you wound up with the 1200 rpm version. I thought you looked at the 1500 rpm ones?

And it doesn't work with my SATA enclosure so idk
@bwDraco DUDE MY SSD ARRIVED

There's 900, 1200, and 1500 rpm versions. The 1500 rpm version would be the best in this case, but is also a bit louder and has a higher minimum speed.
What speed did you run the original three-speed fans at?

@rahuldottech this is similar to C# .NET websites
they have to be compiled into a package prior to deployment
but i feel it is probably like a using a hammer to dig a hole

@bwDraco Disk Management shows "unalocated", so I'm creating a simple volume
@bwDraco Okay, figured it out

@rahuldottech the entire google ad serving stack and chunks of other google properties are written in C++, and just googling "C++ web framework" will find you a bunch of libraries and frameworks for server-side web c++
Obvs you'll still need HTML/CSS (or a templating language that compiles to it) for the actual page layout and JS (or, again, something that compiles to it) for stuff you want to run in the browser
In principle you can do web programming in anything that can read stdin and write stdout, if you a CGI-compatible httpd, and I have in fact done so in (among other things) C, C++, Bash, and Postscript -- none of which I would recommend for this purpose.

@djsmiley2k: Also, do note that most Noctua fans with PWM control will stop on a 0% PWM signal, a feature intended to enable semi-passive operation.
Though there is a minimum speed before the fan stops.

@bwDraco it was running about 10RPM ;D
litterally, it'd never turn, it's got built in sensor and generally didn't get warm emough

Original fan speed?

4:05 PM
and then just stopped working alltogehter.

The fan did have three speed settings.

Didn't realise there was diff speed ones, i got the one I linked, lol

It looks the "PMW"/"PWM" confusion was the problem.

Blame the seller.

4:06 PM
The slower one actually works out better for me
Now.... can I hotplug a fdan in D:
as I said, it hardly runs

Well, this is a case fan, so I don't quite think you need 1500 rpm...
@djsmiley2k Well, I wouldn't do that on the motherboard itself.

hmmm
can I run that on linux u_O

@bwDraco Speeds with a shitty cheap USB enclosure ^

@rahuldottech Not bad.
@djsmiley2k It's OS-independent. I'd hibernate the system first.
The OS doesn't normally monitor the fans FWIW.
I have connected and disconnected fans from my desktop's liquid cooler while running, though that's not on the motherboard but on the liquid cooler's separate fan wires.
The original speed of the Antec fans was 1500 rpm on high. That is rather loud for some people, and I'd assume it's an exhaust fan (since it's on the top of the case), so 1200 rpm is perfectly fine.
You said the original fan was 4-pin, which means your motherboard was controlling the fan speed?
You might want to spend some time adjusting the fan curves to get an optimal mix of noise and temperature levels.
Or just set a fixed speed in the BIOS and leave it be.
It's up to you.
If it's always running at full speed... the 1200 rpm version is actually better due to the lower noise levels.
While my NF-A14 fans get rather loud past about 1100 rpm, they're intake fans that are pulling against a filter, and they're the only intake fans in a system that can generate more than 400 W of heat under load (and has up to four exhaust fans).
"up to" because not all of these fans may be on at once; most notably, my PSU can run semi-passively.

4:32 PM
yeah antec, but it wasn't on the mobo

So it wasn't motherboard controlled.
Does the case have a fan controller built in?
...nvm, the Antec Three Hundred doesn't.
Do you have an unused fan header on your motherboard or a Molex to fan connector adapter?

yup
unused 4pin
that's why i wanted a 4pin

Great.
Does your motherboard offer PWM control on that header?
Not every board does, even if it's 4-pin; some will only have simple DC voltage control.
Be sure to set up the fan curves to your liking.

@djsmiley2k: Also, do note that most Noctua fans with PWM control will stop on a 0% PWM signal, a feature intended to enable semi-passive operation.
...actually, the industrial fans will not stop at 0% PWM.
Then again, this isn't something that concerns most users.

ffs! the fracking brummie bastard!
you know the dev before the disappearing one?

@Burgi the vampire?

no the one after him

I've lost count of your minions
Anyway, what's he done now?

Welp, I had two people shout stuff at me on my way home
One was largely incomprehensible, and knowing Glaswegians, likely unrepeatable here
The other one was an Uber which roared past me as I was waiting for a light to change making a bizarre bird squawking noise

5:07 PM
> noctua needs to build that into their fans.
(from one of the comments)

wtf my desktop has usb 3 :O
> NEC® USB 3.0 controller
- 2 x USB 3.0/2.0 ports (at back I/O)
AMD SB850 chipset
- 12 x USB 2.0 ports (5 ports at mid-board, 7 ports at back I/O, 1 port at back I/O is also for ROG connect)
> 8 x Fan connectors: 1 x CPU / 1 x PWR / 3 x Chassis / 3 x Optional
annoying doesn't say if PWM or not

This start-stop feature is nothing new at all. Noctua has had this feature ever since they launched their first PWM fans.

@DavidPostill he is the one that refused to commit code to source control
i've just discovered that roughly 15 email templates are missing
they aren't in source control and they aren't in the email sending platform

/me ponders

the only evidence we have they existed is the fact we still have the test emails from the sending platform
so he has built them, uploaded them to the sender and then deleted them from it

5:13 PM
@djsmiley2k M4A89GTD PRO/USB3?

Crosshair IV Formula

Ah.
That's a flagship board, albeit an old one. It should have PWM control on all headers.

hmmm according to this it is tomshardware.co.uk/…
yah, old :(
Did u have to do a pratical as well as the exam?

...wait. There's a FireWire header on this board!

On mine?
yes.
xD

5:19 PM
(manual page 2-34)
> IEEE 1394a port connector (10-1 pin IE1394_2)
Fan header information is on page 2-35. Maximum fan current draw is 2A on each header and 7A aggregate.

is it pwm?

All have PWM control.

\o/

Be sure to set it up in the BIOS.

I'll have to get the linux tools to control it, but good to know
or that, yus
Windows has Q-Fan, but ew

5:24 PM
Fan control in the BIOS is under the Power > Hardware Monitor > Fan Speed Control.
(see page 3-32 in the manual)
Each of the OPT fans can be individually controlled.
On my Crosshair VI Extreme... there's a pair of CPU fan headers, a chassis fan header, two sets of four headers each for liquid cooler radiator fans, and a water pump header. All of these are four-pin PWM, controlled in groups, and have 1A max output (except for the water pump header, which allows up to 3A).
I know, that's loads of fan headers.
And if that's somehow not enough... it comes with a mezzanine board that provides even more fan headers.

lol

The chassis fan header and water pump header are unused on Astaroth. The intake fans are on radiator fan group 2, while the rear exhaust fan is on radiator group 1.
The extra fan headers is one of the standout features on this EATX board. The other is an M.2 heatsink. Neither of these are on the ATX-sized Crosshair VI Hero.
(the Crosshair VII Hero did add an M.2 heatsink above the first PCIe x16 slot)
Interesting. There are three chassis fan headers on the Crosshair VI Hero and they are individually controlled.
