@JourneymanGeek... exactly how important is support small/local business to you?

For me, small/local business typically gets somewhat preferential treatment, e.g. I may buy from a small shop even if the price is higher than what a big store charges for an equivalent product, but I do have limits.
If the price is, say, 10% higher, I will likely select the small business.
But if the difference is closer to 30%, the lower price wins.
@JourneymanGeek care to explain why it matters this much to you, to the point where no local availability means no sale, even for big-ticket electronics?

I didn't say that
But that a company is local is one of the things I consider.

2:16 AM
Good morning. People suck.
Chocolate, on the other hand, if the only thing worth living for
And coffee isn't bad either

Can we change the topic?

Sure.

lots of flags in other rooms

You get notified of those?

yeah I'm a 10k user

That can't be fun...

more annoying than anything else, but gives me a sense of who's abusing flags / being abusive, because once in a while bad apples from other rooms come here

@FreezePhoenix I think you meant '==' :P

4:42 AM
@rahuldottech not if they're writing in VBScript
If a = b Then

@allquixotic VBScript is... Weird.

also Ruby has === and you can even define ================================================================================‌======================================== if you want

Handy. But weird.
@allquixotic (゚⊿゚)

"does it really, really, really, really equal the other thing?"

== is correct.

4:45 AM
@rahuldottech I think '==' checks for equality, it doesn't say 'a and b are same'. At least in C++.

@RogUE it... Checks if they are equal

yeah you all by yourself

Equal == Same
(?)

balalala

@rahuldottech no, not necessarily
two objects (or structs, or ints, or whatever) can contain the same data, but may be separate copies of the data in distinct regions of memory

4:49 AM
1 == "1"
/ / true

@FreezePhoenix 0

in Java, == is for only if the references equal, meaning you have two variables that point to the same region of memory, they aren't distinct copies

@FreezePhoenix That can't be true.

i thought it means is

@RogUE type conversion says it is.

4:50 AM
Object.equals method is for whether the data matches, regardless of whether it's the same region of memory

@FreezePhoenix wrong

so it's not a check?

1 is int the "1" is char.

it's a command

everything is a language if you try hard enough

4:51 AM
what about or is

Whoa what coding language are we talking in? I'm using js

@FreezePhoenix depends upon the programming language

&& or |
that means and and, or

&& is just and

but hard and

4:53 AM
@FreezePhoenix I was talking about C++.

&& in java yes means and, for real

@FreezePhoenix so js uses type conversion while checking for inequalities?

it means execute this code, and then this code

Maybe.

4:56 AM
@GettingNifty doesn't it mean execute this code, and if the result is a monster etc value, do this code?

lol
no a monster value should never exist
you should write the monster value so that it throws an exception
if youre cpu can't handle it I would just give up

@allquixotic Wat

Every four years the difficulty of cryptocurrency increases.

@GettingNifty Your recent conversation is not making any sense. If you don't have anything sensible to say then please go elsewhere.
Thanks guys.

5:18 AM
Thanks for keeping things running smoothly.

(removed)

@FreezePhoenix That would be true under JavaScript, but not in most programming languages.
Which is why using === instead of == is recommended in most situations. The former checks type; the later does not and allows type conversions to achieve a true result.

you can delete it in 40 seconds

Have a nice time with your cat.

@allquixotic So... on unexpected results from type comparisons...
What other commonly-used languages do this?

Nodejs

Type Script

> $a == $b
Equal
TRUE if $a is equal to $b after type juggling.

5:26 AM
Force Script

> var_dump(0 == "a"); // 0 == 0 -> true
WTF.
No wonder people consider PHP a terrible language.

What?
No, I agree with that.

JS returns false for this comparison.

No no no you got it wrong.
Wait you got it right.
In PHP, a char is equivalent to its index in the alplabet.

> Detect and Fix (Android)

With a straightforward name, Dead Pixel Detect And Fix (DPDF) is a straightforward method for locating and potentially repairing dead or stuck pixels. The free app is available for Android 2.3 and later, and features an interface that is both self-explanatory and easy to navigate. Like many apps and programs in our guide on how to fix a dead pixel, DPDF lets you cycle through various colors to locate and potentially fix a dead or stuck pixel using an extended series of six flashing screens.

We are nearly home \o/

1:29 PM
@allquixotic :( . TBH, ours is actually one of the rooms, that in theory, people mostly don't have issues with. If there's specific stuff here you're not happy about - LMK, maybe on gitter and I'll see if we can work on it?

1:41 PM
And home \o/
Hmmm was there another blog post?
Also can I join in the gitter?

I don't even remember how to invite people XD
@allquixotic @Bob?
tbh, we were talking about something properly self hosted too, but yanno these things
I should just set up an IRC server

Bob
@JourneymanGeek no objections
but yea we really should do a matrix server

@Bob more like I don't remember how to do it ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek actually we have a public channel on gitter

.... oh
SORRY!

Bob
1:50 PM
the private channel ... idk, up to you :P

ah lol
I forgot about that
holy crap
I've not talked to that guy in years

@JourneymanGeek we could run an umber of IRC servers together, with the numer of people here who could host.
I'm just looking at some Out of Band access to you guys :D

@djsmiley2k we could

just in case I say something really really stupid
@JourneymanGeek it'd be an interesting project at least lol

.....that gives me multiple terrible ideas :)
@djsmiley2k problem with IRC for me is decisionitis
there's a lot of meh options to run a server
I used to do unreal + anope

1:55 PM
I've never properly run one, just as a proof of concept
(i.e. to see if I could)
or there's 'other' options too, tho i dont' know which are selfhosted, etc etc

@djsmiley2k I have a few, a few slack rooms,
dystroy.org/miaou/static/intro.html looks nice if I could ... hmm

one of my best questions

Q: How to set filters/automatically put email into correct bundle?

djsmiley2kI am using Google's new Inbox, as a long time (pre-beta) GMail user I'm used to setting up filters to make sure some emails go to the correct places, as google never categories them correctly. This option seems to no longer exist in inbox, how do I make sure emails about jobs (from specific job ...

@djsmiley2k oh for me ;p

@djsmiley2k soooo DIY matrix? :P

@Bob or irc. Matrix still needs registrations and its a bit odd ;p

@Bob lol sure :D
wait, someone called their program matrix?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek tbh I don't like irc much

they called the protocol matrix
the server is called synapse

2:11 PM
ah yes, that tactic of making sure your name is a common word so no one can google your product?

Maiou's actually a decent option if we wanted to go single server

I really like IRC or something like that, because SO accessible
i really see it as just for OoB stuff tho

not trying to replace this place at all.

@djsmiley2k mostly what we use these things for

2:14 PM
D:
plus can do ssl for those who need iut.

and occationally stuff too embarassing for main chat lol

yah, that's why I asked about gitter.

I whine a lot.

lol sure.
See, I do my whining here ;)

(I mean, I think @Bob only got about half of my last round of "ugh parents")

2:15 PM
Lol any 'Parents' comments simply get my 'Move out then' response ;)

lol. I'm still a little mindful this is pulic
@djsmiley2k naw, they were supposed to do a thing for me.

@JourneymanGeek oh, ok, that sucks :/

and kinda put it off till the last moment, and didn't keep me filled in and...
well turns out they did!

in that case the whining is valid.

2:17 PM
Sorry

And it didn't work out and that's fine!

I have a friend on psn, who just whines about everything, all the time

very boring.
xD

I tend to distribute my whining

2:17 PM
But while he claims he can take whatever anyone says to him, I doubt he can
Only child syndrome.

(cause I'm currently having the tiniest bit of multifaceted imposter syndrome XD)

because I can be very to the point.
Oh imposter syndrome.... it never goes away :/

Naw, it dosen't
it just changes

But at the same time, if it did, I'd be bored.
The more I know, the more I know I don't know.

Though I'm aware everyone else potentially involved has the same issues

2:20 PM
But I also get some weird..... 'everyone is stupid' syndrome, where I can see the solution to a problem and can't understand why anyone else can't.

"Oh shit, I just am in $strange_situation and I'm not ready and I hope $person says $response but there's so many people better than me and...."

But, never shout loud enough ;)

Then I realise. Every. One. Has. That. Too

They do, or they are .... suffering from some mental illnesses which makes people have the opposite.
Or they have just never failed, ever, and are about to

Dunning Kruger? ;p

2:21 PM
But yeah most sensible people think they can't do the things they can.
Grandeur, etc
Trying to not be insulting to no one in perticular, because randomly I'm being nice I guess?

lol
quite
Though

So there's a bus on fire not too far away

I actually think a little imposter syndrome makes for better interactions with people
just a little though

Yup
My senior colleague loves me to ask him things.
Now if I didn't doubt myself, I wouldn't.

hah, yeah

2:24 PM
Right

though in my current job I don't ask things cause I don't know. I ask things cause there's no bloody organised documentation

we onmly got back from Scotland 1/2 hr ago or so
but need to go get shopping
so we can at least last til ~tuesday
@JourneymanGeek Oh that is a factor too

But eh

I know I'm gonna get torn a new one on monday because I did something

work's the sort of place where you can't really get fired

2:25 PM
but.... I was told by someone 'MAKE IT WORK'. So I did.
not my fault there was no one I could really ask
@JourneymanGeek well that's good, but it breeds complaiancy.

right, gone

@djsmiley2k Its embarassing when I mess things up
but some other folk...
Well I had an easier team when I was with a team of newbies than some of the 2 year veterans
(few people seem to last more than 3)

3:00 PM
hmmm
well my boss generally isn't involved unless I really really really messed something up, which I haven't really done so far
there was the time i broke DNS for a client, but that was forgiven due to bad UI, and the fact no one else noticed for 2 days.
but my other collegue, he messes up a lot
and the senior guy is like 'dafaq you doing?'
but it's... silly stuff, and I can see why he's annoyed
and the guy is like 'I don't get why he's on my back all the time!'
Ohj joys
looks like more whining about youtube.
/me ponders if it's as FUD as the whining about 'youtube isn't showing me all my subs'
which was total and utter bs.
but funny to watch

1 hour later…

Here's a little tidbit I learned about some 15 years ago: the Gimli Glider, Air Canada Flight 143—a glider-like landing onto a Canadian Air Force base-turned-racetrack after the Boeing 767 ran out of fuel due to a computational error during the transition from imperial to metric units.
Air Canada Flight 143 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight between Montreal and Edmonton that ran out of fuel on July 23, 1983 at an altitude of 12,500 metres (41,000 ft), midway through the flight. The crew was able to glide the Boeing 767 aircraft safely to an emergency landing at a former Royal Canadian Air Force base in Gimli, Manitoba, that had been turned into a motor racing track. This unusual aviation incident earned the aircraft the nickname "Gimli Glider." The subsequent investigation revealed that a combination of company failures, human errors and confusion over unit measures had...

@Bob omgomgomg I wanna do Synapse now \o/

Notwithstanding the fact that they missed the mistake while checking fuel prior to takeoff, the pilots were given an airmanship award for making a landing that most commercial airline pilots would not have been able to make.
AC143 has got to be one of the weirdest aviation incidents in memory.
