12:22 AM
Morning

Morning... Afternoon for me, almost evening!

morning @JourneymanGeek
where are you from?
it's 7:29pm here in manhattan

Roughly somewhere on the surface of planet earth

nice answer!
me too, by the way :)
I, too, am from Earth.

Time is entirely relative. So's your mom.

12:30 AM
Woahhhhh
What in the ...
Why are you talking about my ... mom?
Dude, she has cancer - that was mean.
I get the whole relative joke, but still.

So we can't talk about people who have cancer?

My mom's about to pass away, and here you are cracking a mom's joke, when I just want to relax on the internet.
Not in a malicious way, @MichaelFrank - that's ... not nice ...

shrug We have no way of knowing that
also, your mom jokes are the 1.5th worst form of humour.

It's ok, I don't expect you to know ... @JourneymanGeek
but ... can you just reflect on what you said?
it's not nice ...
especially since you've got a DIAMOND and all ...

Well, presumably but I don't know if you're here to constructively engage or not yet.
I'd feel terrible if was a regular.

12:37 AM
that's like ... bigoted ... "talk about his mom until he proves he's worthy ... "

hm
that word, I do not think it means what you think it means

yes, it does, @JourneymanGeek
not a religious / cultural context, but it does mean it

Glorious email lols!

so, new user comes in here, and you talk about their mom ... ? that's incredible ...

shrug You're making drama for the sake of making drama. Please try not to. You don't like it Sure, I'll remember it for the next time, but if you're bring disruptive and just making drama, I suggest this isn't the place for it.

12:39 AM

0_0
what the heck is a i2900 0_0
and what does this have to do with fonts?

A scanner.

I'm guessing he somehow set his default font to that awful bold highlighted style.

@JourneymanGeek whether someone "likes" something or not is all relative - and so is your mom :)

12:41 AM
Rewind a little bit... I sent him an email asking for a service key to a particular model of scanner. He replied with that info, in that font style.

now if you'll excuse me ... Im heading back to the hospital now ... to visit my mom ...

but dude, Arial!

just please reflect on what I said, though, ok?
that was hurtful ...

right! Now, I'm vaguely convinced your sole goal here is drama. We don't do drama. Might want to spend a while reflecting on the tone and content of this room before you return.

@JourneymanGeek I'm going to report you to Tim Post and Robert and Shog and have your diamond removed. You're the one who started off with insulting my mom, who is dying of cancer.

12:45 AM
@D.Hutchinson go ahead.

In other news, I'll be starting work in a biochemistry research lab tomorrow and I'm super excited! :D
4

fun! Try not to kill us all
or was that high energy physics...

Heh, I think I'll be doing mostly bioinformatics, at least at first
The most dangerous thing that could conceivably happen there is maybe my laptop falling out the window onto a passerby?

My major at the university is biology though, so I'll eventually have non-computery projects

1:09 AM
._.
now I feel old ;p

so biochemistry is mooshing animals together to see what their output is, right?

@MichaelFrank no, that's applied abomination of science.

Bob
A graduate admissions application is not the place to be seeking psychological closure. (And academia.stackexchange is not the place to be diagnosing psychological problems.) — Sneftel 13 hours ago

@Bob That question is the real wtf.

2:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek What have you done...

Q: I feel I was suspended incorrectly,

D.HutchinsonI had a chat with Shog9, who advised me to ask the question here. Basically, I had a conversation with the moderator, Journey Man Geek, in the Root Access chat room, and I feel he insulted my mom with Time is entirely relative. So's your mom. And I reacted to it, and in turn he gave me a ...

2:30 AM
@MichaelFrank replied
feel free to weigh in

You cannot be serious.

duuuuuude, dark

Bob
...including the price makes it look like some kind of ad blurb
is nyt paying you for this? :P

lol
@Bob he's just worried people will complain about paywalls

Not price, maximum articles per month before you hit the paywall.
@JourneymanGeek Is this inappropriate for the room?

Bob
2:43 AM
@bwDraco ah

@bwDraco is fine needed context

2:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek Eh, I think you said it all.
It was a weird conversation, and I think you are right that his previous interactions in the room were odd as well.

^ Reasons I can't take the AMD community seriously

!! Caaaaaaaat2

@JourneymanGeek Incorrect. I do drama. Lots of it.
And despite your many attempts to get rid of me, I'm still here. So's ur mom.
@Bob eh, I see regular fanboi-ism on both sides. Would you say the AMD community exhibits more of it?
@JourneymanGeek If your mom weighed in, she'd break the scales.

Bob
@FMLCat They do seem to be more obvious about it. And louder.

Also your mom is relative is not an insult.
Unless you meant relativistic in mass or something which would go well with the time reference and general relativity in general

2 hours later…

@JourneymanGeek: OnePlus seems to be having some issues with credit card fraud lately; card data from recent orders seem to be getting intercepted, resulting in unauthorized transactions: forums.oneplus.net/threads/credit-card-fraud.747206

anyone here know their way around windows restore from image? I'm getting frustrated...
says no disk that can be used can be found even though the new empty drive shows up when it asks if you want to exclude drives.
...hmm maybe I found it here

What does that mean. I am using HMA VPN.

Q: What recourse do I have, if a moderator insults my mom and then suspends me, too?

D.HutchinsonI had a conversation with the moderator, Journey Man Geek, in the Root Access chat room, and I feel he insulted my mom with saying Time is entirely relative. So's your mom. Being caught off-guard, I reacted badly to it, and in turn he gave me a one-day suspension, which I don't feel is fair...

^ Mostly a repost of the earlier one.

7:00 AM
Guys I think he thinks I can remove JourneymanGeek diamond uhhh let me explain:
I made a joke and said I was a robot controlled by Robert Cartaino/Shog9 it seems like he took it too far. (Not %100 sure if he is talking about me and I never told him to post anything.)
I hope he is not talking about me.
OK, time to slip away.
Maybe it wasn't me he was talking about. Time for me to go and rest easy knowing this is not a valid reason for me to get suspended.
HWHH out! (Sorry I can't stop talking in here.)
!!/help

7:18 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 Information on interacting with me can be found at this page

@IAmABot Hi
Oh wait is it a bot?
Sorry if you are not a bot IAmABot.
I should of checked the reps.

anyone wanna give me a hand? I'm up against system recovery not correctly identifying the system disk :/
diskpart> select disk=system: there is no system disk to be selected
I must be looking either for a bios setting or some denomination of disk configuration in diskpart...

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 ..... dude...
You do realised you just made the whole thing worse right?
did he actually talk to shog?

No clue.
It was a joke pre the suspension .

You do realise I need to mention this on the meta answer right?
could you link where this was?

7:32 AM
pre = before.

seriously, maaaan.

@JourneymanGeek Of?

where you convinced him you were a bot
I will give you a stern talking to shortly

Please hold.

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 please don't tell people you're a bot controlled by (some staffer) or (some user) ever again
like, don't even think about it.
or even think about thinking about it.

7:34 AM
:D

Clear?

Somewhere around here:
in , Jan 12 at 6:14, by Henry WH Hack v2.1.1
I will contact a higher up about this, I am good friends with one of the higher ups:
it started.
@JourneymanGeek Yes, sir. (See I am very understanding.)

ehh
I wouldn't count that as impersonation
Your stern talking to, alas, may come another day

No, that's where it started.

nope, not seeing it
so shrug

7:47 AM
stern?

serious.

Somewhere less serious than the rolled up newspaper
Like, yanno "BAD DOG"

HWHH out!
@JourneymanGeek Myself included?

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 if you say you're a bot controlled by @HenryWHHackv2.1.1 ....
ehhh we were merely look at you funny
!!baroo

like so

Another lesson learned on how to moderate \o/
Well, it's getting late here.

go the frell to sleep? ;p

I'd kinda say, "by claiming that you're a bot, you've confused a lot of us, including a CM. Please don't do that again."
I just don't know how to word things like this well.
Social experience problem (meaning, no solution in chat, outside action needed)?

8:03 AM
hah
see, I first worked out if he said he was a bot
never deal with a problem that dosen't exist. We don't get paid enough

@JourneymanGeek I was kinda aware of this; it's in the chat user profile.

Well, profiles is a grey area
then I was actually checking with people and getting a birds eye view of anything that didn't need me to react.
Say meta posts
;p

How do I learn this?
I've been told I lack a sense of nuance... how would my inability to flexibly word things like this hurt me?
In an actual mod situation, what would be the potential impact?
I can't seem to word things in a "stern but soft" manner.
I'm hoping to learn something today.

moderation is 90% soft skills

So... no way to build this within the confines of chat?

8:08 AM
Well

Suggestions?

user226528
...and soft skills are achieved through moderation in all things

Why "naw" instead of "no"?

I was (for unrelated reasons) a RO first ;p
(amusingly due to my habit of leaving my PC on all night, and logged in)
@bwDraco why not?

8:09 AM
...well, this might be the biggest issue. "No" has a harder impact than something less formal, and my being a stickler for accuracy and formality is (apparently) harmful.
Is this learnable?

user226528
How often do moderate people get moderators?

@bwDraco see, the worst thing a person running a community can do is take themselves too seriously
the needs of the community, sure...

I often can't find the words to get the message across while not being too impactful.
...hmm. I think I have an idea.

let me tell you about a guy I once knew. Used to run a huge community site for a small community. Thought he was hot shit. Was rude to new users...

You role-play as a dog. Maybe, just maybe, if I decided to role-play more myself...

8:11 AM
Ended up driving a lot of core users away and its kind of a ghost town these days. Well, then he died.
@bwDraco well, that came on its own. I blame @allquixotic ;p
Its a useful mod tool, but entirely useless for most practical things.

That could change the dynamics on how I participate, which might help the social experience.
@JourneymanGeek Continue?

see, you're taking a little fun too seriously
I don't see any other mods use the same techniques, and they can be just as effective

Well, I've kinda grown out of my most critical issues, and the behaviors that caused disruption in the past have mostly been addressed.
Issues like, demanding excessive attention.
(well, not completely fixed, but checked more closely)

and the core is really "defuse issues, be mindful of other users, don't be an arse, and handle problems with minimal fuss and massive firepower"

> minimal fuss and massive firepower
Again...
4 mins ago, by bwDraco
I often can't find the words to get the message across while not being too impactful.

8:15 AM
practically, I need to do this more.
Well, you often don't need to engage
!!therethere

I don't quite get your point.

this works sometimes. Sometimes you just pick up the problem, and leave it somewhere where it can't hurt itself.
@bwDraco lets say, hypothetically, someone we know's a troll is here

@JourneymanGeek Look at the meta post of D.Hutchinson. :(

I could raise a massive fuss.

8:16 AM
He said something about me.

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 handled, more or less

I can't even look. :(
So embarrassing.
I can't handle looking at Robert Cartaino ♦. (Huge fan.)

hah, lol
YOU POSTED THAT
so, -0-0- deal with it.

@JourneymanGeek I kinda see these from a bit of a different viewpoint - instead of just feeding the troll, we should understand why the user wants attention.

8:18 AM
My approach is to find the root cause and address it to the extent possible.

@bwDraco ehh, or just realise they arn't worth spending time on, and focusing on the people who actually engage construtively

I might bring the user in question to a private discussion and try to understand what's going on and hopefully help.
Perhaps this could turn an unproductive user into a valuable contributor.

well, eh
quite often, they need to take the first step
not everyone is say, skippy

I tend to see trolls as having some kind of unmet need underpinning the behavior.

(user who went from a 20 year suspension to a productive user and a mod. )
@bwDraco I'm not their babysitter.
I quite literally have better, more fun things to do with my time

8:21 AM
Eventually, you do want to give up, but it's something worth trying at least once.

I think there is a fundamental issue, no matter what my intentions are, and it's just a lack of real-world social experience.

I think an important lesson is picking your battles

I'm the sort of person who's willing to spend the time to do things one-on-one. But then again, my schedule is mostly empty, which is not the case for 95%+ of people...
I think... there are more useful ways to spend the time. If I really wanted to be a mod, I should be in the field socializing with others and building critical social soft skills, not sitting in front of the computer all day.

I learnt a lot sitting in front of a computer all day ;p

8:28 AM
A lot of this comes down to talent. I happen to be on the autism spectrum, putting me at a natural disadvantage.
So, what can I do differently here to pick up social skills?

well, realise there's no formula
as I've said so many times

The key here is, what am I missing?
Perhaps it's because I'm not participating enough?

hm well, to a certain extent, you go through cycles of overthinking

Perhaps because I wasn't forced into a position of authority like you were in the first place (i.e. a missed opportunity rather than something that was my fault)?

Don't forget, someone like say @allquixotic or others often do a good job at dealing with stuff I'm not around to handle without me needing to do it
and lol... forced?

8:31 AM
Well, kinda.

I stood for election, and expected to come in second or something ;p

You had opportunities I never really had.

Heck, I'm sitting in the same chair I was when I typed out my halfassed election stump ;p

You were a mod on a major (IIRC BattleTech) forum?

well one like it anyway! They all look the same
oh, LOTB? Bunch of guys in West Virginia.

8:32 AM
How did you wind up there in the first place?

I admit, I learnt a lot from fokker07 and that lot
errrr
friend of mine ended up there and dragged a bunch of singaporeans...
I have no idea what actually is the secret sauce that makes people online trust me ;p
(I didn't even have a dog then!)

Well, my early days here involved a lot of talk with @DMA57361, one of our old mods.
I learned much about the basic community moderation tools like close votes and stuff from him.

Bob
floof

well, that, and say flags are mostly mechanics
you're fitting the best fit to a problem

So, in the end... I still have issues to sort out myself, including a lack of social skills arising from a lack of productive interaction with others, partly due to a lack of desire to chat with others.

8:36 AM
with actual people, you're trying to fit a square peg into a nth dimentional hole.
well, if you don't feel like chatting, don't

I guess I just need to get over my perfectionism and chat more!

I might go "hey guys, I need to take a break - I'll be back in N days, don't panic"

This is part of the reason I don't have a full-time job - because I've lacked the initiative and desire to interact with others and take action on my own.

Bob
auspost has gotten pretty quick recently o.O
two things shipped yesterday morning got here today

I guess it starts with being more willing to take initiative.

8:38 AM
@bwDraco I'm unemployed at the moment

You know what? I think I might bring this up with my career counselor.
Learning to take initiative and become a self-starter.

doing some courses, following some leads...
the trick to being a self starter is to just get out and do it

That is why you're successful.
It's going beyond wanting to achieve something, it's about taking action.

lol
I also make funny a lot. ;p
lol
I just happen to have some responsibility and some power, in a small corner of the internet ;p
I wouldn't call it a success

Well, and my arrogance is a problem.
You just reminded me that I need to be humble.
(though increasingly stringent checks against arrogant behavior IRL seem to be helping)

8:42 AM
hah.

8:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek Wow... everything got erased and I missed it! D:

er, yeah

So I guess it just spiralled a bunch?

It wasn't productive?

So... initiative is key. I'll see what I can do about it tomorrow.
Nighty-night. It's 4 AM here.

9:15 AM
i'm having weird issues with local DNS

have you tried turning it off and on again?

not .dev tho?

not .dev

whats happenin?

9:33 AM
i have an old entry to example.local pointing to 127.0.0.1 in my hosts file. I ping from the cmd prompt and it returns as expected. I added newsite.local to the hosts file and try ping and it can't find the host
tried rebooting, tried flushing my dns cache
little bit stumped

heh

Bob
@Burgi exat exactly did you add? the whole line
and what exactly does ping say when you try?

if you nslookup it, what do you get

@djsmiley2k nslookup doesn't use the hosts file

Hey, guys. Does anyone know how to read 8-inch floppy disks with a modern computer?

user226528
I do have a corresponding drive.

user226528
And it does have a seemingly compatible IDE cable.

P_ hn[ =#98NM~(

user226528
But apparently, connecting the IDE cable to an IDE outlet on the motherboard does nothing.

@djsmiley2k child/cat/drunkface -like typing detected

12:52 PM
2.1 indeed

@FleetCommand what OS are you trying to use?

user226528
Windows XP

user226528
But I am not restricted to it.

you might need to go older

user226528
I can use whatever Windows or Linux that is compatible with this modern system/

12:53 PM
MSDOS...

user226528
I can.

user226528
I used MS-DOS 5 when I was a kid.

have you checked the pin output on the IDE cable?

user226528
Yes.

and it is identical?

user226528
12:55 PM
As far as my eyes are telling me, yes?

i meant the technical pin out
1 = Ground, etc
does XP install the drive?

user226528
No.

user226528
I also tried Windows 7.

user226528
No

user226528
AFAIK, the BIOS is responsible for identifying it.

12:56 PM
Win95 or DOS

is there even a IDE port installed?

8" floppies are pre-90's i think

user226528
@djsmiley2k lol. Yes. I assure you I am not that dumb.

does the drive actually work?

user226528
In its own broken computer, yes.

user226528
12:58 PM
Attached to the modern computer, no.

try a physical win95 box
have you got the drivers?
