12:14 AM
@djsmiley2k lol

Bob
morn

I want a 3D printer, just for this :D

12:34 AM
what's 3d printed about it?

The bits that aren't Lego, I guess...

assuming its a working keyboard

1 hour later…
2:05 AM
nn all

Night

2:48 AM
Huh, in Windows 10 1709, the Certificates snap-in for MMC no longer puts spaces between bytes of certificate thumbprints \o/
Manually deleting all those (or sending it through a .Replace(' ', '') in PowerShell) before putting the thumbprint into cipher was kind of a pain

Bob
O_O
TIL one of the Asus applications can do audio routing (program => output device)
I've wanted that for ages
and had the damn thing installed all this time
arghhhhhhhhhhhhh
only problem is it doesn't seem to work :\

:/

3:03 AM
@MichaelFrank I hate cold weather!
my flight was canceled:-(

@Bob custom routing? yeah, there's another app that claims to do that too (forget its name, but it's free) and it's not that great either
best it can do is hijack the DLL and might not have permissions to do that or DEP or something might prevent it

Bob
@allquixotic Found this one, which works pretty well: github.com/audiorouterdev/audio-router

not sure even WASAPI has an official API for that, and definitely not MME/Dsound

Bob
Looks like it works by DLL injection.

@Bob that didn't do shit for me :/

Bob
3:05 AM
Which doesn't work on Firefox with sandbox level 3, but works if I turn sandboxing down a bit (2)
Works fine with Spotify, thankfully
(since they're still doing that Electron-based thing that doesn't let you pick an output device)
@allquixotic which target program?

Some parts of the Windows audio system are protected processes, so nothing can touch them

So every time I enter this room it defaults to Michael for some reason

err... whut?

@Bob Spotify, actually

@allquixotic @Bob voicemeeter banana?
that pretends to be the main output device then in theory lets you route, wherver

Bob
3:23 AM
@allquixotic works fine with spotify :P
@JourneymanGeek nah, that one doesn't let you separate the input streams. so you either need an application that lets you pick its output, or only one application on the default output

ahh ya

Bob
it's a pain no matter the OS, AFAIK
7
Q: Can I direct audio from a single app to a particular output?

Marcel M.For example, I would like for iTunes to play thru my iMac's speakers, but iChat's notifications thru my headphones.

and I remember trying this in Linux a while back with similar results
it's kinda sad that the most effective way I had previously was running a VM, cause VMware lets you pick the audio output device for the virtual soundcard :P

4:17 AM
sigh
Cable management is a pain in the butt.
(just rerouted a few cables in an attempt to reduce clutter near the power supply area)

Just shove everything behind the motherboard tray ;p

Yes, but the wiring in front of the supply had to be routed through some narrow grommets. Some of the wires have been rerouted so that they make better use of the space.

....
Ever looked through your photos, and wondered what the hell was going on?

Hmm?

Bob
4:24 AM
o.O

1 hour later…
5:31 AM
Oh, I know what it is, vaguely
just not why I have a photo of it

5 hours later…
Bob
10:20 AM
\o/
parts 1 and 2 of the netword rebuild are done
(configure router and rewire/label everything w/ switches)
now every cable has a little label tag on the end :)
step 3 is setting up the UAPs
@JourneymanGeek ubiquiti stuff is nice but doesn't come with cables :(
so here I am making a whole bunch of cables
even worse, the PoE stuff needs two sets of cables

10:35 AM
0_0
One to the POE injector, one out of it?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yup

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I really don't like passive PoE :P
redactinated

Bob
the other side of the text one says "POWER CABLE"
maybe I should've written "POE" but most people who might touch this wouldn't know what that is :P

10:46 AM
They'd panic over the "Do Not Use!"

Bob
good
cause I really don't need anyone going "ooh let's plug that into my computer!"
48V on ethernet port = poof

.... you say it like its a bad thing....

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol, when I'm the one they're gonna complain to...

user226528
10:58 AM
Man, there are a lot of books on getting thinner. I wish there was one on getting beefy.

Bob
11:20 AM
...
@JourneymanGeek I was so close to getting everything up perfectly
...swapped orange with striped-green on one end of one cable and somehow didn't catch it the first test

@Bob but no scooby snack?

Bob
and it let the AP adopt too

@Bob there is a good reason I hate doing cables.

Bob
but then failed to connect afterwards, of course

@Bob I'm not entirely sure about that. Ethernet ports have pretty beefy isolators on them.

Bob
11:21 AM
@FMLCat well, I'm not about to test it :P
in theory, it's well isolated
in practice, it's a $200 mobo or $1000 laptop

lol
SU question? Anything with the potential for doom is probably HNQ bait ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I think there was one already

Bob
hm. not on SU though!

@Bob ah I was thinking of on routers

Bob
11:26 AM
@FMLCat to be fair, the device end is supposed to be similarly isolated

Yeah I don't recall seeing nearly as beefy isolators on laptops

Bob
but "beefy" isn't the word, yea :P
anyway, easy label vs expensive smoke

We all know how "supposed to be" works out in the tech industry!
The passive PoE I use has external splitters

Bob
@FMLCat yea I'm using an external injector
but it sits near the power outlet, not near the AP, so it's not very obvious
@FMLCat Have you used this unifi controller before?

@Bob yeah but these use an external splitter at the device end too, so separates the cable into a normal Ethernet jack and a DC jack
@Bob controller no :-(

Bob
11:39 AM
@FMLCat ah. yea, these APs take POE directly
@FMLCat oh... I'm trying to figure out how I can apply what appears to be AP-specific configs like band steering globally :P
you'd think that's possible...
but I don't have the group configuration option :S
hm. my phone's still connecting to 2.4GHz despite the band steering :\

12:21 PM
flippin cars!!! D:

12:39 PM
@Bob band steering is... Klutzy
As I keep saying, it's appalling the latest WiFi standards still lack basic steering features that 2G mobile phones have had since the 90's

@FMLCat kinda ironically? I blame backwards compatibility

!! Tell 41633937 no

@FMLCat I also blame scotland, and cats

It wouldn't have to be backwards compatible, and they've implemented plenty of feature in new standards that are not. Also Cisco compatible/proprietary extensions have had that functionality for a decade.
They had it even before 802.11n in CCX
@Bob band steering is... Klutzy
Also, what phone?
In the absence of non-klutzy network-side steering, most client OEMs have resorted to implementing more intelligent decision making in the UE in recent generations which for the most part work quite well

1:16 PM
Someone doesn't seem to understand how labels work

Bob
@FMLCat yea it's ... not working. at all.
@FMLCat S7E
It always connects to 2.4 first :(
and I can't even force it to 5 on the client side

1 hour later…
2:32 PM
hi

ho

Bob
hu

2:50 PM
unfortunately we started in the middle; the correct order is ha, he, hi, ho, hu

is Cat7 an actual thing now?

!!therethere

@ChatBotJohnCavil pretty sure a few frames after that ends/loops the cat smacks the dog in the nose real good :P
he raises his paw like he's going to

Bob
now I want to buy a label printer
someone convince me not to :P

.... that's hard
wait, how did you label your cables without a label printer?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek oh, I have a litte handheld one ... it's a pain to type on
thinking about getting one of the PC-connected ones

ahh
Oh, no real point then
the handheld ones are kinda essential...

Bob
lol
would've saved me half an hour
of painfully slow typing

2:56 PM
(and hah, old office is all labeled in felt tip. And erm I forgot to document them)
oops

Bob
(and would've given me better spaced labels - I was manually spacing by adding ... spaces)
some of my labels have the text going over the curved bit :\
dammit you're supposed to convince me not to! :D

You won't need it that often ;p

Bob
true, true
but... shiny?

lol
but dust gathering? ;p

Bob
3:13 PM
true, dust spoils the shiny

3:32 PM
@JourneymanGeek amazing, lol
dog: "OK, ok, you win, I realize you could probably kill me now..."
cat: "meh"
dog: "There there."
cat: "Don't do that! MYAAAAH!!! *attack*"

silver sharpie is awesome

Bob
@djsmiley2k hm?

I'm finishing up some handmade decorations the wife got

Bob
ah

3:48 PM
@allquixotic I think its a very young cat, and a very mature dog ;p

@Bob You can
And that particular phone generally prefers 5Ghz naturally without needing band steering, has it managed to hit 5Ghz at all?

Bob
@FMLCat How?

@Bob They're awesome

Bob
The normal Android option isn't there
@FMLCat not unless I make a new SSID

Works without root or system install incidentally

Bob
3:59 PM
hm
I don't think I'm VLANing right
@FMLCat oh, an app

@Bob Yeah, they deleted the option from system settings a long time ago

Bob
this isn't working

VLANs, your wifi, or the app?

Bob
the first two :P
I'm trying to add a guest VLAN but this switch isn't having it
bleh. probably need to tag the non-guest too

My quad-core S4 with Cat 4 LTE is faster at downloading than my 8-core Z5C with Cat 6 LTE because the latter uses too much CPU in the networking stack and keeps overheating and thermal throttling -_-
@Bob New switch?

Bob
4:17 PM
@FMLCat Yup. TL-SG2008.
Though now I realise apparently this wooden door is too much for my wifi signal -_-

4:52 PM
lol
> [...] has anyone experienced or read about actual electromigration problems, such as reduced overclocking limits or instability at stock, caused by extended operation [of a Pascal GPU] at higher voltages?

Bob
5:31 PM
there we go, guest vlan setup done
turns out I was doing the right thing all along, just dodgy reception

@JourneymanGeek it is
err
lego keyboard z\o/

@Bob A suitable amount of C4/Semtex would solve that problem :)

@DavidPostill isn't that a universal solution? XD

@djsmiley2k Yep :)

Bob
5:46 PM
when all you have is a hammer bunch of c4

@Bob Well you could, of course, just open the frigging door :)

@Bob did yuou not know how many labels to start with?
because.... lets say 10 power cables. type 'Power' once, hit print 10 times... etc

Bob
@djsmiley2k every room has its own label
I'm not labeling power cables here... they're obvious

wait hat just links to the album, fail
silver sharpie'd on the right

Bob
@djsmiley2k also the act of printing on this little thing is tedious even ignoring the typing

5:55 PM
nod
but i don't imagine bigger printers are actually better xD
for some reason we got some huge expensive looking rhino label printer at work
it comes in a flippin case
it prints..... the same as the crappy old handheld one

We had some at my old work, it was small but I didn't mind. They were awesome
2

OUT OF CONTEXT ftw

Bob
@djsmiley2k QL-700, auto cutter. also the label rolls are cheaper

how many you planning to print?

Bob
none :D

6:46 PM
lololol

7:40 PM

2 hours later…
9:24 PM
my god it's so cold today

9:55 PM
@djsmiley2k Stop whinging. It is currently -27 °C in Siberia.

lol
We got snow for the first time this season.
