12:15 AM
@djsmiley2k ?

1 hour later…
1:36 AM
So... experimented with disconnecting the fan controller because the case fans are louder than I'd like. GPU temps are still sane after some gaming, but the acrylic case window is experiencing insane localized thermal expansion where the GPU is extracting heat.
I'm probably going to reconnect the case fan controller shortly.
Problem is that the only operating exhaust fan in this configuration is the CPU liquid cooler radiator, and possibly the power supply fan.
(possibly because the PSU operates semi-passively)

1:49 AM
Well, with the PSU fan off... we're trying to extract about 350W of heat from just a pair of 120mm fans that are only supposed to remove heat from the CPU. That is a recipe for disaster.

@bwDraco using a manual one or a on-motherboard one?

The fan controller is part of the case.
I can't turn it off completely, and it's manually controlled to operate in either of two speeds.
VRM temps are awfully high for a processor not even running at full load, close to 60 °C.
(as measured from my thermal imager)

eh, you could use the ones in the motherboard, and use that to control based on temps

...and Astaroth powered down without warning. No indication of CPU overheating, though. Had to switch the PSU off and back on, seems the PWR_OK signal just dropped for no reason. The RGB lighting on the motherboard was intact, indicating that +5VSB was on.
This is probably a one-off PSU glitch because I was pushing the PSU semi-passive mode switch at the time this happened.

Bob
Huh. Logitech wanted me to change my password on login ... interesting

2:00 AM
I might have accidentally triggered the PSU protection, but to my knowledge, nothing should have caused a short-circuit.
I've put the PSU back into active mode. The fan on the PSU is practically inaudible and there's not much of a reason to leave it off.

youtu.be/p1Vb8SB2HJ0 only in brazil CC @ThatBrazilianGuy

No more fooling around.

Bob
@bwDraco Uh. That's ... pretty poor.
In fact, I'd call that a total failure if the PSU can't manage to switch its fan on before overheating.

Yeah. That's really unexpected behavior for a top-of-the-line Seasonic.
The power supply was nowhere near overheating.

Bob
@bwDraco Meh. Use the mobo. Didn't you get a high-end Asus board?
You can usually customise fan profiles on those.
I ran with a mostly-silent (i.e. fans off) profile for a bit.

2:10 AM
^^^

Bob
Though, my fans are so quiet it really doesn't matter. And I ended up leaving it as default after (yet another) firmware upgrade reset the profiles -_-

I'll look into it.

Bob
@bwDraco Are yours 120mm or 140mm fans?

There's two things in my case I don't use - the fan controller, and the firewire port....

Bob
IIRC 140mm are supposed to be quieter (slower for same airflow volume)

2:11 AM
140mm. Stock fans on the 760T.

Bob
Ah. Probably the same fans as mine.
TBH I can barely hear it.
In fact, during daytime, I can't hear it. Open window is louder.

They're not loud by any means, but it's annoying when you're so close to the computer.
I'll just leave it alone.

2:27 AM
@Bob -_-

3:08 AM
@Bob I want to buy that again. Wonder if they'll offer it to me
honestly I don't even want to move my server to a new box anymore, I'm happy the way it is
whoa... I just got a 1 year invoice for only $968 :D
> Commercial gesture - Enterprise SP-128-S - 128G E5-1620v2 SoftRaid 2x2 TB Server - 4 months
is that because of their outage(s)? :P
or are they just happy to get more value out of an Ivy Bridge server when they're now selling v6 CPUs

Bob
@allquixotic O_O
how are you still getting a discount?

3:41 AM
@Bob that's my original invoice from December 21, 2016 -- but when I went to renew (without any special offer being sent to my email), I'm getting it for even less than last year
I just had my invoice payment confirmed and my expiration date is now December 20, 2018, and I only paid $968
that's more than $100 off of my previous year's price!
I just clicked the renew button on the OVH control panel, then clicked 1 year
I got a 4 month discount of $484
why? "Commercial gesture".
same problem as with Hetzner -- they use very strange "English" terminology with words that look auto-translated from their native language and doesn't make a lot of sense to us because it's not idiomatic
Hetzner would agree to "Extraordinary cancellation" if you wanted to cancel early :P
you want to cancel? Wow, that's extraordinary!

speaking of which...
I'm done moving all my stuff off the old server. I need to decide when I'm comfortable with cancelling it

Bob
4:07 AM
@allquixotic Dammit, I really should've jumped on that one :P

4:38 AM
@Bob are you stuck on Sandy?
you might be able to get some kind of a discount for staying on old hardware because the HW is presumably paid off by now

Bob
@allquixotic Not really stuck, and I really don't need anything more, but ... yea :P
Maybe I should ask them...
@allquixotic Oh yea, I just realised Octave Klaba responded to one of my emails to dc.syd about routing o.O

4:57 AM
@Bob that's amazing :D
was the response technically detailed?

I'm feeling very grumpy right now :(

Bob
@allquixotic nup. "we will add ntt in SGP in 4-6 weeks."

> 4-6 weeks

Bob
yea that was late august
they said syd would happen after sgp
3 months later ... yea I asked again yesterday actually :P

entire block?

5:07 AM
Thanks.
See you soon.

why do they put the delete room button next to the delete messages button lol. I swear I either push it or almost push it every time.

lol

@bwDraco np

@allquixotic Paid off? Wait a sec, they don't buy servers outright?
In fact, I tend to think you should be charged more to be on a legacy server because the older hardware is more expensive to run.
(users which cannot afford downtime for migration will be willing to pay the price; those with less critical requirements will want to move to a more modern server)
Ah, I think I get it. Paid off as in the cost of the hardware has been fully covered by subscription revenue.
But still...
@allquixotic... here's a question. Will learning ZFS make me more employable?

Bob
@bwDraco Those with more critical requirements would have enough redundancy in place that migration would not have any downtime.
If you "cannot afford downtime" then your requirements aren't anywhere near critical, period.

5:18 AM
@Bob Yup. So this would encourage best practices.
There shouldn't be a single point of failure.

@bwDraco I meant that the costs OVH incurred in procuring the hardware for my server (presumably they bought it, not leased/rented it from someone else) have been paid off by me renting the server for months

@bwDraco but they don't get the money for the servers at once
and past a certain time, moar moneyz

there's a certain "payback time" after they buy the hardware, fronting the cost upfront, after which they start to profit; before then, it's revenue, but they're operating with a cash loss
and since OVH isn't all that expensive, it probably takes quite a few months

Bob
@allquixotic You're more covering depreciation. The servers themselves are an asset they can later sell.
Probably where all those eBay CPUs come from :P

Who the heck still wants SNB-EP these days? :P

5:23 AM
If its cheap enough, and you arn't paying for power, and its good enough...

Sandy Bridge-EP is horrendously inefficient compared to, say, Broadwell-EP.

(but then again, I run an avaton server)

@bwDraco is it really? I could agree for pre-Nehalem chips, but really in the recent generations the aggressive power savings "easy pickings" have mostly been already picked
imo Sandy or Ivy won't look horrendous anything until we have Cannon Lake or Ice Lake

@allquixotic or even then
I kinda think we've hit the age where we upgrade cause we want to, or there's some new functionalty available, rather than "our machines are too slow"
least set up correctly
and systems have been pretty darned efficient post sandy

Heh. I love VirtualBox's new UI.

6 hours later…

._.
SD card on my brother's camera went odd. Annnd I just recovered 20gb of images off a 16gb card. Sucessfully it seems

@bwDraco hense, under the desk!

@JourneymanGeek rofl

@allquixotic the problem being I want to copy the photos back on ._.
I'll just make a copy, delete the raws and copy it back

have you chercked every single photo?

naw
just a random selection
I assume he has them backed up

11:57 AM
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
also you appear to be trusting a card
that you know just failed?

12:34 PM
"trusting"
I have backups ;p
I assume he has but no idea

@bwDraco virtualbox is back under development ?
nice

Q: Weird time warp of windows clock

J. DoeAll of a sudden it started to rush ahead. I was logging in to a system and wondering why my session would expire every minute. After reboot the clock was back normal time. What is this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TCJY6rcEoY

umm...what?!
Check out the link! o.O

@MichaelFrank looks like either a VM with a hacked RTC driver, or a guy with a virus that tries to be "scary" by doing the same
I suppose it could be a faulty hardware RTC or a bug in Windows, but both of those options seem relatively unlikely

3:03 PM
> One of my friends and I sat down and figured it out that splitting the cost of a rack in Hurricane Electric's FMT2 data center marginally lowered our monthly hosting expenses vs all the paid services we're using scattered across the Internet which can all be condensed into this one rack.

...well, that was quick. Woke up to the doorbell.

makes me wonder if getting OVH's 2 x Xeon Gold 6140 would be cheaper than each of us getting our own server, cloud backup, etc. for ourselves

It'll take a few moment to set up the new monitor.

384 GB of RAM

@allquixotic Do you have an application that requires this much RAM?
This sounds more like some sort of database server to me.

3:07 PM
@bwDraco yeah, lots of people simultaneously throwing their random shit on it

lol

we could have "the RA server" that covers Geek's IFTTT, my ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated server, backups for all of us (separate OwnCloud instances), etc.
and split the cost
Bob has like 82 little VPSes
he might even have more VPSes than he has browser tabs, but that's just a rumor
3

So... what's the best way to learn ZFS? I have the hardware to run big VMs for this but is this a good idea?

you only really need to do more with ZFS than you'd do with, say, ext4 (format a drive and use it in a single volume mode) if you need to set up L2ARC, ZIL/SLOG, etc. (basically their RAID-alike features)
or I guess if you want to do snapshotting

Bob
@allquixotic I still haven't figured out their new naming scheme :P
@allquixotic :D
actually I've moved most of them to lxd containers now

3:20 PM
@Bob whoaaaaaaaaaaa, so LXD is a thing now that isn't just a toy project? :D (j/k, I'm using it too)
but seriously it's awesome that you're a convert too
did you get the seccomp/apparmor profile blah working on the Debian kernel?

3:40 PM
Going through a fast first calibration pass as the gamma curve is way out of whack.

Bob
@allquixotic the ubuntu package works fine when built on debian, but it's in apparmor disabled mode
@allquixotic the debian lxc mailing list mentioned they're turning on apparmor in unstable kernel but that breaks lxc. the thing that's incomplete (ubuntu patch) is expected to go into upstream kernel soon (tm)
but that's for lxc. not much progress on an official lxd package

4:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek So, Mister Geek, you want to work with us, huh? I see you can build servers and manage complex networks but... Tell me a bit more about your capybara chasing skills.

Just changed the refresh rate to 144 Hz. Wow.
I haven't even finished calibrating the monitor.

I just set up ConsolePort for World of Warcraft. It basically makes it a whole new game!

4:20 PM
facepalm
Why would a monitor contain a lithium-ion battery?

@bwDraco clock?

about to say settings backup
also maybe there's more to it than that -- having the label may mean it's treated slightly nicer in shipping :D

@djsmiley2k Easier and safer to do with an EEPROM of some description

how cheap tho @Mokubai

pennies
literally pennies
£0.06 for 2kbit. probably enough if you aren't using some shitty JSON or XML implementation for storing settings
for an extra penny you can get 8kbit
A lithium battery would probably cost a couple of orders of magnitude more.

4:36 PM
now the code too

Baked in to linux kernels
i2c is a common serial interface and linux knows it
you'd need a lot more circuitry to make sure the lithium battery was charged and is safe. a memory chip is simple, safe and standard.
odd to have a battery. can't see a reason to justify it at all

> This letter of authorization is also the first instance of where learning about how the Internet actually works gets a little weird. That letter is literally all it took for me to take control of a sub-block of someone else's public address space and get it routed to my network instead of theirs. Some of my network peers later asked for me to provide this LoA when we were setting up my network links, but that means I just sent them a PDF scan of a letter with my friend's signature on it. And I mean an actual signature; not some kind of fancy cryptographic signature, but literally a blue s
someone had a hell of a lot of small lithum batteries to get rid of|ZXCVBN<>?

Sry, 2.1 spilt Apple Juice in keyboard and now it's booked

5:05 PM
@Bob insecure :S
@djsmiley2k did they spill Apple Juice in an Apple computer? :D

;P
LOL no

@allquixotic He said it's booked, not it's ridiculously overpriced

5:21 PM
I think he meant to say borked but his keyboard is borked ;)

Bob
5:33 PM
@allquixotic bleh, not particularly
I'm leaving the actually untrusted stuff for a separate server for now :P

FML
6:10 PM
I'm untrusted!
@djsmiley2k really? That actually looked like some sort of funky backwards cryptic zalgo
Also how does your keyboard even have these keys

@FML You could certify yourself ;)

FML
@allquixotic years

6:27 PM
Calibration completed.
No dead or stuck pixels.
144 Hz... you have to see it to believe it.
You may need to go to the NVIDIA control panel to set the monitor to run at full refresh rate on the desktop, but 144 Hz is absolutely incredible.

6:44 PM
@FML it was alt gr on linux keyboard, but yeAH IT WAS COOL

'what the hell has he done to my keyboard' is what I typed
and now you know that, you can almost read it

pretty, but is your pc infested with keyboard daemons?

lol
(on the main display is Assassin's Creed Origins)

7:11 PM
The pixel density and smoothness... It's just incredible.
No wonder 144 Hz displays are all the rage these days.
Also, color gamut is fantastic.
(yes, it's TN, blah blah, but it's definitely better than my cheap Acer IPS)
Plus 1440p = more desktop real estate = more productivity

//.../???>>>? lru

meow

@bwDraco nice; G-Sync and >60 Hz are certainly fantastic (sitting behind one right now), but I do wonder how much difference one could discern between a 100 Hz and a 144 Hz

7:35 PM
huzzar the keyboard is restored
D:
<,k,#?
everyhtinhg sseems ok ;D
nmvbbhjkl;' oddly, holding down the malfunctgioning key now does nothing, maybe i'ts dead :/

8:23 PM
what's cats current name now
@FML it is the 'Fn' key o_O

@allquixotic There's no excuse for there to be mains voltage on the charging wire.
This is why I don't use cheap chargers.

@allquixotic Human error, but I find it surprising that they could be electrocuted by 5V, or that there could be mains

I see people carry damaged charging cables with them all the time.

In theory the risk of death by charger cable is small. The charger itself would have to be really defective for harm to occur.

10:51 PM
DOOM at 144 fps... 🤯
