So... experimented with disconnecting the fan controller because the case fans are louder than I'd like. GPU temps are still sane after some gaming, but the acrylic case window is experiencing insane localized thermal expansion where the GPU is extracting heat.

I'm probably going to reconnect the case fan controller shortly.

Problem is that the only operating exhaust fan in this configuration is the CPU liquid cooler radiator, and possibly the power supply fan.

(possibly because the PSU operates semi-passively)

Well, with the PSU fan off... we're trying to extract about 350W of heat from just a pair of 120mm fans that are only supposed to remove heat from the CPU. That is a recipe for disaster.

@bwDraco using a manual one or a on-motherboard one?

The fan controller is part of the case.

I can't turn it off completely, and it's manually controlled to operate in either of two speeds.

VRM temps are awfully high for a processor not even running at full load, close to 60 °C.

eh, you could use the ones in the motherboard, and use that to control based on temps

...and Astaroth powered down without warning. No indication of CPU overheating, though. Had to switch the PSU off and back on, seems the PWR_OK signal just dropped for no reason. The RGB lighting on the motherboard was intact, indicating that +5VSB was on.

This is probably a one-off PSU glitch because I was pushing the PSU semi-passive mode switch at the time this happened.

I might have accidentally triggered the PSU protection, but to my knowledge, nothing should have caused a short-circuit.

I've put the PSU back into active mode. The fan on the PSU is practically inaudible and there's not much of a reason to leave it off.

Yeah. That's really unexpected behavior for a top-of-the-line Seasonic.

The power supply was nowhere near overheating.

You can usually customise fan profiles on those.

I ran with a mostly-silent (i.e. fans off) profile for a bit.

Though, my fans are so quiet it really doesn't matter. And I ended up leaving it as default after (yet another) firmware upgrade reset the profiles -_-

There's two things in my case I don't use - the fan controller, and the firewire port....

IIRC 140mm are supposed to be quieter (slower for same airflow volume)

TBH I can barely hear it.

In fact, during daytime, I can't hear it. Open window is louder.

They're not loud by any means, but it's annoying when you're so close to the computer.

I'll just leave it alone.

@Bob that's my original invoice from December 21, 2016 -- but when I went to renew (without any special offer being sent to my email), I'm getting it for even less than last year

I just had my invoice payment confirmed and my expiration date is now December 20, 2018, and I only paid $968

that's more than $100 off of my previous year's price!

I just clicked the renew button on the OVH control panel, then clicked 1 year

I got a 4 month discount of $484

In fact, I tend to think you should be charged more to be on a legacy server because the older hardware is more expensive to run.

(users which cannot afford downtime for migration will be willing to pay the price; those with less critical requirements will want to move to a more modern server)

Ah, I think I get it. Paid off as in the cost of the hardware has been fully covered by subscription revenue.

But still...

@bwDraco Those with more critical requirements would have enough redundancy in place that migration would not have any downtime.

If you "cannot afford downtime" then your requirements aren't anywhere near critical, period.

there's a certain "payback time" after they buy the hardware, fronting the cost upfront, after which they start to profit; before then, it's revenue, but they're operating with a cash loss

and since OVH isn't all that expensive, it probably takes quite a few months

@allquixotic You're more covering depreciation. The servers themselves are an asset they can later sell.

Probably where all those eBay CPUs come from :P

Q: Weird time warp of windows clock

I suppose it could be a faulty hardware RTC or a bug in Windows, but both of those options seem relatively unlikely

So... what's the best way to learn ZFS? I have the hardware to run big VMs for this but is this a good idea?

you only really need to do more with ZFS than you'd do with, say, ext4 (format a drive and use it in a single volume mode) if you need to set up L2ARC, ZIL/SLOG, etc. (basically their RAID-alike features)

or I guess if you want to do snapshotting

Going through a fast first calibration pass as the gamma curve is way out of whack.

@allquixotic the ubuntu package works fine when built on debian, but it's in apparmor disabled mode

@allquixotic the debian lxc mailing list mentioned they're turning on apparmor in unstable kernel but that breaks lxc. the thing that's incomplete (ubuntu patch) is expected to go into upstream kernel soon (tm)

but that's for lxc. not much progress on an official lxd package

i2c is a common serial interface and linux knows it

you'd need a lot more circuitry to make sure the lithium battery was charged and is safe. a memory chip is simple, safe and standard.

Calibration completed.

No dead or stuck pixels.

144 Hz... you have to see it to believe it.

You may need to go to the NVIDIA control panel to set the monitor to run at full refresh rate on the desktop, but 144 Hz is absolutely incredible.

The pixel density and smoothness... It's just incredible.

No wonder 144 Hz displays are all the rage these days.

Also, color gamut is fantastic.

(yes, it's TN, blah blah, but it's definitely better than my cheap Acer IPS)

This is why I don't use cheap chargers.

I see people carry damaged charging cables with them all the time.

In theory the risk of death by charger cable is small. The charger itself would have to be really defective for harm to occur.
