12:07 AM
hah
@allquixotic EA is the oracle of game publishers anyway...
where good products go to be milked to death.

12:45 AM
So... currently running a Ryzen 7 1800X at 3.95 GHz, 1.344V (was thoroughly validated for 1.338V but a bit of extra voltage is perfectly safe at these levels and only helps with stability). Idle power is about 83W, which is rather high but not unreasonably so for an overclocked system.

If you know a PSU is good, how do you test if the CPU or the Motherboard is the cause of a dead system?

modern motherboards should tell you
also CPUs have few parts that can fail

What about a not-so-modern motherboard?
Short of replacing either component and seeing if I guessed correctly, I can't see of many ways to do this. :|

by modern, I mean within the last ... 5 years?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Swap in a known good one. It's the only way to be sure.
If you want to guess, look for bad caps on the motherboard.

1:37 AM
also, how do you know the PSU is good?

Bob
Also, how exactly is it "dead"?

Because I tried it in another machine here, along with trying a new PSU in this dead machine.
Dead as a doornail.

"VTC, unclear what you're asking" ;p
ah, that works

Bob
Then it's the mobo.
Or the power switch.
Or the wire from the power switch.

power switch is an easy check
(just short the pins)

1:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek It depends - higher-end motherboards have a POST code seven-segment display on the board.

No pins to short on this thing...

@bwDraco lower end ones have a simple LCD

Bob
Most motherboards with a dead CPU will still beep at you, IIRC. Or at least try to power on the PSU (fans spin up)

It's a POS controller... Not really a standard computer. ;)

@MichaelFrank what is "this thing"?
ph, industrial PC type thing?

1:39 AM
@MichaelFrank Short the green wire to any black wire on the ATX12V cable, if one is present. The power supply should turn on.

@bwDraco PSU turns on fine, that was the first check.

no diagnostic lights?

Nope. Which is why it's basically a 50/50 Mobo/CPU fault. :)

@MichaelFrank CPU failures are super rare
motherboard failures are pretty common

Alrighty... I'll try it that way first.

Bob
1:43 AM
@bwDraco protip: look at the wire position, not the colour
the colours can sometimes be ... different

@Bob as can positions
and that's assuming its a standard PSU or even has wires

Bob
@JourneymanGeek not unless you have a 15 year old Dell machine

assuming, in general is bad? ;p
also, looking at the specs its possible these things are laptop or soldered in sandy bridge

It's not a soldered in model.
Annnyway, luckily I have a spare motherboard is stock. I'll try that one first.

I half suspect that'll work

Okay, so I've replaced the motherboard, it turns on for a couple seconds before restarting and doing it all over again.

everything is broken? ;p

Yea lol
These things are a piece of crap tbh
But it's doing more than before, so... progress?

Oh, I replaced the CPU as well.

@Ramhound Did you see what a translation said?

@JourneymanGeek yea it's a pain

The Coalition for self-driving cars is running a campaign to get the cars on the road.
They're saying that even if they're not ready now if they put them on the road it would pressure them into making it work right. Lol, as they are still decades away from replacing humans
So if an automated vehicle kills you you thank these self-driving car coalition
Just the lawsuits alone from mindless etana Bots killing small children would cripple the thing if they want to push this on the public quickly

6:32 AM
With no backyard or doggie door the dogs have to be walked and walked and again. That mini Segway hoverboard thing can be world's laziest dog walker.
The bigger younger dog runs out in front of it at 10 miles an hour. as a team we're pretty good at keeping from running into each other. This way I can tack on more miles for the young dog who can easily walk or run 10 miles a day.
After miles of walking and running the dog will turn to you and yawn as if he's barely begun, "show me the squirrels"

6:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek He's stoned...
@Psycogeek Nice lair you got there...
@Psycogeek Nice stormtrooper's scooter you got there...

Truthfully even a small apartment that isn't in very good shape would be better than these RV things in price comfort, and if you want to go somewhere use a motel or a hotel this most certainly isn't always fun or a good way to live

7:15 AM
But then not a lot of apartments are advertising for two mutts and a nut.
Yeah just try and get into the Hyatt with two dogs I would have to disguise them as children
Damn ugly children😎

@Psycogeek who do you thank when you die to a normal driver?

Q: Can I scale (stretch) a Remote Desktop session locally?

BobHow can I view a 1080p RDP session in stretched fullscreen on a 2160p (UHD) display? I am using high-DPI screens with a UHD native resolution. I would like to have a full-screen remote desktop session. In Windows 10, the local resolution and DPI settings are applied remotely, which looks grea...

@JourneymanGeek ^ just high-DPI things :P

@allquixotic My ISP is offering a 128gb iPhone 7 for $260. Is it worth it?

It's never worth it.

@djsmiley2k it's for my sister and mom and stuff

$260 upfront?
what are the monthly costs?

12:50 PM
@Burgi none
It's one time payment

seems very cheap... what is the catch?

@Burgi you need to take a mobile subscription from them.
Wait, I'll give you the link

and what is the monthly cost of that?

@Burgi probably a fixed length subscription - and I donno if other places do the "cheaper sim only" option

@JourneymanGeek thats what i was thinking

"Pay 2499 every
month x 24 months
(includes device EMI & fully
loaded Airtel plan)"

@Burgi @allquixotic

@rahuldottech headlines please, i'm CSSing in another window and on a deadline

What would you normally pay ? ;p

@JourneymanGeek honestly, that's not much more than my normal mobile subscription
@Burgi what @JourneymanGeek quoted ^

12:56 PM
my current sim only plan is half what I'd pay for a plan with a phone

@JourneymanGeek what do you think of EMIs?

I rather buy my hardware outright

@rahuldottech so you'll then have 2?

If I was gonna, I'd certainly compare the cost either way

1:11 PM
@rahuldottech ha uargh

@FleetCommand indeed :)
You're not wrong enough that I'm worried about it

user226528

There you go, I asked you if they put that because your answer is wrong, or for some other reason

Oh, Rahul has left.

@FleetCommand is the project you have been assigned to interesting or is it a case of they are trying to force you out?

user226528
@Burgi The actual project I am assigned to is temporary, extremely dull and loathsome, and well-paying. The make-belief project I told you above is permanent, eternally interesting and very lucrative.

@JourneymanGeek I get the vague feeling that the MS client simply does not do scaling :(
In which case, an alright solution would be some kind of virtual desktop that's scaled differently from the default.

Benchmark time!
(the processor is not overclocked right now)

i expect to be disappointed @bwDraco

@allquixotic, here's some food for thought: dpreview.com/news/0687559256/…
Has NASA ever awarded a camera procurement contract to any company other than Nikon?
(asking because allq works for a government contractor and is probably familiar with the procurement process)

3:33 PM
Why change what works is likely NASA's answer to that.

On fresh profiles, using six websites: Google, Yahoo, Twitter, AnandTech, Tom's Hardware, and DPReview...

@bwDraco hasbrald won the contract for apollo

Hasselblad?

That was a long time ago. Any more recent examples?
Also, Hasselblad isn't quite mainstream, and they don't compete directly with Nikon IMO.
Hmm... Too many ads on some sites, throwing off the results.
I'm removing the Purch sites from the list, but will be adding PC Perspective, Reddit, and Imaging Resource.

Toshiba 'hybrid' drive...
@bwDraco adverts are a valid part of a browsing test imo
choosing sites without them, well you might as well choose sites that are only html1.1 too?

I know but some sites have complex script-loaded ads that introduce too much variation into load times.

/me wibbles
Would anyone else buy a toshiba hybrid hdd?
In laws asking, and I'm like.... I dunno?
it's prob a normal brand really xD
however now amazon won't load anything properly

@bwDraco are you asking about astronaut cameras?
@bwDraco they used a modified consumer version

@Bob: ^ some quick tests show that Firefox Quantum is vastly faster than Firefox ESR 52.

@djsmiley2k How about this images.duckduckgo.com/iu/…

that'll do.

Three copies of each tab in Firefox Quantum (21 tabs total): about 8 seconds.

@allquixotic I just "light pd"

4:01 PM

> Faster than 98% of GB
You lucky brat

we have a 100Mbps bearer, 1:1 contention

Firefox ESR needs... 50-52 seconds.
(range of results after three runs, pages cached)

@Burgi . . .. . ... .. . . . . ... .. .. ... .. .. .. .. . .... .. ... . .. ... . .. . . . .

lol
Peak CPU usage is about 50% on Quantum, 18-20% on ESR.

4:10 PM
@rahuldottech at my old place I had 500Mb to myself when I wanted

So... Firefox Quantum truly is the gamechanger they say it is, especially for folks like me who have high-core-count processors.

@Burgi I have not been replying, but...

How could you not see the real lie? How could you nkt see that even when I was pushing you away I wasn't wanting you
How could you just not notice any of this

and they are in the process of building a hotel in its LoS....

oh dear oh dear oh dear

> It’s fast. Really fast. Firefox Quantum is over twice as fast as Firefox from 6 months ago, built on a completely overhauled core engine with brand new technology stolen from our advanced research group, and graced with a beautiful new look designed to get out of the way and let you do what you do best: surf a ton of pages, open a zillion tabs, all guilt free because Firefox Quantum uses less memory than the competition. Your computer will thank you. 🙂

someones gonna get cooked

To summarize: Firefox Quantum takes about 8 seconds to load 21 tabs of varying complexity. Firefox ESR 52 requires about 50 seconds to do the same. This means that Firefox Quantum is a six-fold improvement over Firefox 52.
Tested on an eight-core processor, so most users will not see an advantage this large, but the difference will still be very visible.

4:29 PM
how long does a single page take to load?

Haven't really tested, but does seem to be noticeably faster.

right now on my chrome, hackaday.com/blog takes 5.7sec to fully load

Cached, less than one second.
Not cached, anywhere from 2-5 seconds (DNS caching is playing a role here).

Just got the #FirefoxQuantum update. The performance difference is simply monumental. In a test involving 21 tabs of varying complexity, Firefox Quantum was up to 6x faster than Firefox ESR 52 on my 8-core desktop. How's that for a quantum leap? #Firefox #FastForGood

It's like a closet...

4:53 PM
we've done some google mapping and we think we have a week, maybe 2 before the LOS is blocked

line of sight

Except I have lost he one extension that has not been replaced. I like to keep seessions, and the extension that was handling that, cannot be migrated due to SDK issues.
So Firefox 57 won't be used by me.
