random question
why are there so so so many people with triple parentheses in their names on twitter lately? I mean, it's anti-semitic, but I see it being used by jewish people.

@Avery that image link breaks markdown
> It appears that racist groups were using the brackets to “identify” Jewish people on Twitter. in order to target them with harassment.

As a result many non-Jewish people did the same to show solidarity with Jewish Twitter users and to hopefully throw the racists off a bit.

Fixed

@rahuldottech I see.

@Avery we sometimes tend to adopt anti Semitic stuff and use it ourselves. Take the Jude star used by the Nazis. We use it as a symbol sometimes

> Using the “echo” in your Twitter handle is part of an anti-racist campaign against the the alt-right movement — a very scary group of white supremacists that lurk on the web and are just really, really racist and backward. These are the kind of white nationalists that are actually pro-choice because pro-life allows “the least intelligent and responsible women” who are “disproportionately Black, Hispanic, and poor” to have kids. Yea, like that kind of batshit crazy.

lolwut

I feel like burning down the triple parentheses would be better than adopting it but meh
LGBT circles are adopting "queer" "faggot" and "dyke" which were considered hateful for a very long time and... meh. I feel like some stuff just should be buried in history and not twisted around to good stuff.

@Avery :/
I dislike the use of words like "retard" and "fag"

oh, so do I

Instead of accepting it, bury it
I mean, I know people who don't know the real meaning of the words who use them as derogatory terms (know people = a lot of Indian youth)

10:01 PM
the thing with adopting them is, you're giving some sense of success to the haters, they can go "lol they're calling themselves X"
but it can also be the complete opposite and be just "dammit they turned it around and made it something good"
But yeah, noted to think tank: triple parentheses aren't necessarily racist now.

@rahuldottech yeah. Those are bad

The use of triple parentheses or triple brackets, also known as an (((echo))), is an antisemitic symbol that has been used to highlight the names of individuals of a Jewish background. The practice originated from the far-right blog The Right Stuff; the blog's editors have explained that the symbol is meant to symbolize that the historic actions of Jews had caused their surnames to "echo throughout history." The triple parentheses have been adopted as an online stigma by antisemites, neo-Nazis, and white nationalists to identify individuals of Jewish background as targets for online harassment...

@DavidPostill yeah, I read that
article doesn't mention the adoption though

But then again, faggots are a food. As well as being a word used to describe sticks (like, wood ones).
(which I Googled after coming across it in a book which used it like that)

Fag has many meanings, only one of which could be considered derogatory
It all depends on context.

> In the wake of these actions, some users, both Jews and non-Jews, have intentionally placed their own names within triple parentheses as a sign of solidarity

Sadly many of the contexts I've seen are used in a derogatory way
I've also very certainly saw it be used to describe a cigarette and some in adopted ways but I can say that 95% of the uses I saw were derogatory

(my grandmother still uses (((hug))), I don't think anyone has told her yet)

@Mithrandir *hug* is the thing now :P
