Bob
12:12 AM
@CircusCat did you want to test anything on Atom-ZFS? I can give you access to that server if yo uwant

12:28 AM
@Bob No, just your general impressions on performance

Bob
@CircusCat It's not really a heavily used server... I don't think there were any perf problems on the CPU side, but everything was slow (thanks, HDD)
@CircusCat If you want to run some benchmarks or chuck a heavy load on there... I'll give you a user. I've already moved off that server anyway.

@Bob What was your maximum throughput? Do you find it mostly disk bottlenecked not CPU bottlenecked?
@Bob Thanks for the offer. Would be nice though I've not got time right now (sleeping on a friend's sofa atm because reasons)

Bob
@CircusCat lemme know when and give me a public key

Just wanted to get a gauge of how suitable that Atom storage server board might be for ZFS use

Bob
@CircusCat I'll do a quick seq test with dd, one sec. also, it's a single drive - no raidz, no mirror

12:36 AM
@Bob Ah
I've got a vague feeling ZFS can scale to number of cores approximately equal to number of drives
Not sure what'd happen if a single CPU core/thread can't keep up with one drive though

Bob
well, this sucks
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/null bs=4M count=1000 is ~65 MB/s
so /dev/urandom would bottleneck before the drive :P

lol

Bob
I need uncompressible test data... hmm.

This is why I usually use /dev/zero for dd benchmarks

Bob
@CircusCat I have compression on

12:38 AM
Obviously only works with compression off :-P

Bob
actually, I'll make a dataset with compression off
3.7 GB/s on /dev/zero

@Bob You can just set compression off on an existing dataset too
@Bob Don't tell me you have dedup on too? :-o

Bob
# zfs create -o compression=off tank/test
started at 1.1 GB/s, thanks ARC :P
dropped to 190 MB/s before it stopped, trying a larger count
@CircusCat nah, I don't use dedup

3.7GB/sec is interesting though, that would suggest CPU limited throughput (checksumming, etc.) would be at least that

Bob
thought about it before, but these servers don't have that much RAM
@CircusCat dropping very slowly throught 130 MB/s

12:42 AM
@Bob CPU usage?

Bob
40 seconds later 120 MB/s
pretty sure that's the disk bottleneck
@CircusCat load average 1.9
dd itself using ~13% (one core?)

That's not terrible
I wonder how much that board actually costs now

Bob
wait lemme show kernel threads
@CircusCat also this is on the previous gen... C3xxx should be a fair bit faster
your CPU is probably fine, at least on the ZFS front :P

@Bob Nice, thanks
No RRP published on that board, but a very interesting concept
16 Atom cores, 16 SATA ports, dual 10GbE and dual 1GbE... optional PCIe 3 x8, built in OS drive

Bob
@CircusCat I do wonder how it compares to some of the newer AMD stuff
but AMD doesn't seem to be targeting low power

12:50 AM
@Bob The processor performance probably won't come close, I mean it's Atom.
But AMD doesn't have integrated SoCs with 10GbE and so forth

Bob
@CircusCat sorry, I meant price

@Bob Ah
Though the theory is AMDs new arch does scale very well to low power
Thing with pricing is even on a cheap AMD platform you're still having to bung on a 10GbE card and/or AIC SAS controller

Bob
ah yea

Last time I saw a mainboard with 10GbE built in (Xeon D based IIRC) it came in at a lower cost than a Xeon E3 + a cheap 10GbE card
In fact it came in at lower than some 10GbE cards on their own

Bob
@CircusCat wasn't the Xeon D itself cheaper than the E3?

12:53 AM
@Bob Probably
E3 also never comes with the option of an integrated 10GbE controller
Especially not at 45w

Bob
10GbE seems like a difficult thing to integrate
I suppose there's an amplifier stage off-chip though

It's SFP+ so no actual transceiver on the chip or the board
Which might make it easier
AMD's new core is pretty competitive but where they're behind is that it's just a core. If you want something integrated, compact, and efficient, well AMD don't make 10GbE cards.
All that on an AMD board you'd need both a full ATX board and a bunch of AICs. Thoguh you can get server ATX boards with on-board non-SOC 10GbE chips

Bob
@CircusCat oh, not an integrated port
@CircusCat don't worry, just use thunderbo- ohwaitthat'sintel
and it's not even easy to find on intel boards :\

@Bob I wonder if I can find a server board with it
Cause my laptop does have Thunderbolt 3, as does sorta my old desktop board which isn't mine anymore

1:09 AM
> The number of low-cost portable SSDs has grown significantly over the last several months as SSD vendors continue displacing HDDs. The attack began with desktop and mobile PC's and is now spreading into removable storage products. It seems like two or more portable SSDs show up at my door every month. I thought we were supposed to be in the middle of a flash shortage!
rofl

1:40 AM
@CircusCat 10gbe isn't really mainstream/om die on the desktop no?

@JourneymanGeek 10GbE hasn't even been broadly available on desktop boards until very recently, when Aquantia launched the AQtion NICs.

yup
though technically mad people enthusiasts have been getting second hand enterprise cards cheapish for a while

Also, 10GbE switches are few and far apart in consumer space.

at this point though, you could bug together something off spare hardware
(I'd be happy to have proper gigabit. Work is fast ethernet entirely. Home is homeplug, which is starting to annoy...)

1:57 AM
hm. I have an annoying one here. Chrome does the aww snap. for everything. even about:crashes
tried a full reinstall, tried removing it (with revo) and reinstalling....
hm. might mbam scan in the morning on mon

Bob
2:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek remove the profile

tried that too
lol. zipped and deleted the google appdata folder for the user
its also system wide
the computer is just ****ed a bit

2:40 AM
office politics is fun
Boss tells me to set the printer to scan and email through my account since we switched ISPs and cannot use the old ISP SMTP server.
Did so, and suggested we set up a seperate account for that... to the director.
director ignores it. HR suggests its not confidencial enough.
things get done.
so I have to politic a bit ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek send an email to your immediate boss suggesting that, and let him handle it?

Bob
2:57 AM
lol crap
I'm backing up some old servers (buyvm) before cancelling them
this one has a 2.1 GB auth.log
apparently logrotate on Ubuntu 14.04 was broken

Bob
3:08 AM
hm. it's also got a samba server running
I don't remember that

Bob
3:43 AM
hm
I have a server here that ... doesn't appear to be doing anything

Bob
4:02 AM
huh. I found a backup of an even older server ... sitting in /root/.ssh/

1 hour later…
5:13 AM
@Bob naw, director asked immediate boss to do it. Who passed it down to me

2 hours later…
7:09 AM
just create seperate account, tell boss it's done? :/
that'd what I'd have done in the past for stuff like that

7:28 AM
morning

7:45 AM
@djsmiley2k for historic reasons, the director is the one who controls creating email accounts
which is the lulzy thing
So, he asked, then HR complained, then he wanted it fixed after hours. I fixed it the moment I was asked, shortly after I came in
first appraisal was ok. Great technical skills, need to show more initative, and be less of a slob.
Boss claims a few folk are making fun of my tamil accent behind my back and I talk to fast but shrug
also, apparently cause politics, I shouldn't refer to him as my boss ;p
which is lulzy but whateves.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...then what are you supposed to call him? :P

Apparently by name.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wear a shirt? :P

I have no idea. I also shouldn't actually tell people he dosen't want me to do things that's not my job, but not do things that's not my job

Ignore that, he is online :)

7:53 AM
@Bob I do. But it gets untucked... a lot

Bob
@DavidPostill Wasn't it policy to only consider duplicates by question asked?

On account of walking a hell of a lot

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Sounds like you need a better belt :P

well, my pants are too big
I lost 3kg since I started this job

is that stress related or just all the exercise?

8:02 AM
Will a domain controller provide NTP for non-domain client machines?
it should, from what I understand?

@Burgi all the exercise
I get fat when I'm stressed

are things slowly calming down or are they still as crazy as ever?

crazy as ever
(I think?)
actually its pretty quiet today

when i was an engineer we wore black polo shirts with the company logo on because of all our crawling under dusty desks, etc
made you could get your company to do something similar

Bob
@Dave @DavidPostill I've left a couple comments...

8:15 AM
@Bob @Dave Reopened.

Thanks @Bob.
Thanks @DavidPostill,

Bob
@DavidPostill Thanks.
brb deleting the scheduled task before I get logged out next time :P

How is everyone in this room

Bob
wouldn't have stopped me as a teen :P
@Dave same as always, I suppose
which is good. lack of drama is always good.

he he, no it woudln't stop but I think in this case the OP is asking because the child is forgetting more than being disobediant.
he he he, I have a wife and 2 daughters... it's always drama :) Then I curl up into a world of IT and code and feel like I'm in a happy place. Topped off with an hour of guitar... bliss :)

8:22 AM
lol
I've got chat on a side bar... your guitar is tiny and shoelike.
;p
hides

@Bob superuser.com/questions/62525/… and some redirects should take care of that.

Bob
@DavidPostill yup, but @Dave's answer seems to handle it too - putting the delay in the task vs in a long-running batch file
Maybe just s/shutdown/lock/

since I'm on psudomobile... linkie?

Bob
hometime

ah
I have 30 minutes to go

8:29 AM
my guitar... is not.... :)

lol
the legends of the interwebs

8:44 AM
@Dave did you smash it in a rock and roll style?

I would not do such things :) ha ha. Although I knew some one who did smash his guitar on stage because next day he was leaving to live in America. He got to American border and explained he was on holiday, they searched his bag, found a card from his mother saying "good luck with your new life in America", so they turned him back! What a twit!

oops! :)

8:59 AM
just hilarious :)

is the 28th a bank holiday?

It is indeed
I guess this means a day of cooking with the children making a massive amount of mess

9:17 AM
@Dave cooking with the kids can be fun. I usually ask the oldest to lit-up the bbq
less work to do
he is even baking and cooking the chocolate cake. Not bad for a sixteen years old.

sounds brilliant :)
Although I'm really really bad at cooking cakes
I guess because I don't like cake
I think it will be a BBQ tomorrow so we can have pizza...

9:33 AM
there is a hurricane due to hit manchester on sunday
south of stoke is meant to have insanely good weather...
this is yet another indication of the london-centric weather planning from the government

o_O

sudo su

555

sudo -c /bin/bash su -c /bin/bash
;D

/bin/bash not found. :)

9:48 AM
lol

i just learned of this groups existence a couple minutes ago, cant believe the name never stuck out before. maybe im finally a super user now lol, when life adds u to sudoers.. lol

life has added you to sudoers?
do people make you sandwiches when you ask?

lol huh
im usually the one cooking for others
oh i get it

9:59 AM
sudo !!, just need to be a bit more affirmative is all

Would you kindly make me a sandwich?

i like to compare ego perception and higher consciousness to root vs non-root user.. as far as my cs understanding extends. i'd retract the idea that something external gave power... i say i was root all along, but tricked to believe otherwise

o_O
you were never root
you still aren't
sudo doesn't give you root.
Root giveth, root taketh away.

@DavidPostill got an appointment with the office
Two hours from now
Any tips?

10:08 AM
relax
understand they are clearly interested, else you wouldn't be using their time
remember their time, is their money, don't waste it, don't rush it.
have some water, in a bottle, or a cup
something you can sip on, especially if you need to think/calm down for a moment

Bob
hm
@JourneymanGeek ~6k steps on a normal-ish day for ~5km :P
I need to walk more

10432 today for 6.6km
and I'm slacking today

Bob
I think maybe 500 of those steps were from typing :D
@JourneymanGeek ehhhh. those screwdrivers remind me of the old $2 shops. they're horrible to use :P
I've gotten much nicer sets off ebay

Bob
cable ties are also a bit meh - aldi has/had nice assorted packs for something like $4 for 500

10:14 AM
their normal screwdrivers are not bad

Bob
the drill driver bit was nice though. I got some of those from daiso :P
haven't seen the wire brushes. I need them
hm. need that paint knife too :P
@JourneymanGeek they're very much meh
the handles are :(
can't apply much force, and hurt to do so

And show you're a real person! Don't just be a geek, actually chat to show you're someone they can get on with. I've personally never had an interview less than 2 hours (where I've been offered the job). If the interview was less than 2, either they didn't want me or I didn't want it!

@djsmiley2k okay, thanks!

And also, I've been offered jobs due to enthusiasm. They went through a list of skills, I think I had exposure to about 30 - 40% of it, but I explained it's just a matter of learning it all @rahuldottech and got the job. It's better to be honest than try and make out like you know everything! :)

Also i don't think this is for a job, it's for sponsorship for his project
but yeah, what @Dave said counts.

10:20 AM
Oh I see :)

@Dave thanks, will keep this in mind!

10:59 AM
@Bob I really like their replacable headed ones
