8:03 PM
@SimonSheehan yup. what's up?

@studiohack Just trying to confirm something in one of my meta answers... do moderators have access to downvote information? Or is that team only?

@SimonSheehan downvote info? some. we can cross reference and track how many times users have received and given votes from/to others

@studiohack What about when there's "serial downvoting"

@studiohack So you can see how often e.g. I upvoted @slhck?

Are you able to see who downvoted a specific question/user more than once then?

8:06 PM
@slhck :P but there are no specifics
like, I can't see which of @slhck's posts that @DanielBeck has voted for. just how many

Okay, updating my meta answer

@studiohack So asking you which of them I forgot to upvote wouldn't work? :P

haha

@DanielBeck hahahaha, nope :P

Mumble is finally on IOS yay

8:09 PM
@DanielBeck Meh, I wanted to create the tag :P

I still like to think the diamond moderators are omnipotent. It's easier to blame them that way if something goes wrong. They're just hiding features from us.
@slhck Too late.

You Mac people are making me so jealous :( I want the new iChat beta thing.

But the question's subject annoyed me when I found it out.

Plus all the new Mountain Lion features are nice.

@SimonSheehan Only indirectly and certain restricted circumstances.

8:12 PM
@ChrisF Ah okay.

@SimonSheehan None of them are useful. The one good feature (Gatekeeper) is implemented in a really stupid way.

@DanielBeck Oh really? Hmm, thought maybe it might be OK for once. I honestly just want the chat thing. Notifications are similar to Gnome 3/iOS

@SimonSheehan We already have Growl.

@DanielBeck Doesn't that cost money now though or something?
Or is it just no longer open source?

Yeah, since 10.7

8:14 PM
@SimonSheehan The old version is still available AFAIK.

I guess I'll stick with 10.6 for a little longer

@SimonSheehan The data just shows us voting patterns so we can ask the developers to delve further if they have to. The serial voting scripts are automatic - we mods don't get any sight of their activity, except when a user raises the issue of missing rep :)

@ChrisF Ah that does sound reasonable :) thanks.
@DanielBeck I will say, I really dont like how they keep pushing game center

@SimonSheehan And Twitter

Just something no one I know uses and really provides no functionality. Steam is better.
Airplay mirroring is kinda cool

8:17 PM
@SimonSheehan Only if it's not only mirroring. The Apple.SE blog mentions using it for presentations, but that's only useful if I still get my presenter screen.

@DanielBeck Ahhh

Is there a full-proof way to protect Windows based laptop from unauthorized access?

Windows password? Can be manipulated with thumbdrive with cracking script
BIOS password? Battery can be reset

@Boris_yo Put it into a safe. Lock it. Throw away the key.

Okay, how about 90% proof?

Seriously though, full disk encryption. At least your data and system will be somewhat safe.

8:21 PM
Disk encryption will freakin' slow down hard drive.

@Boris_yo Not true.

There was another disadvantage which i forgot as well.

why would it slow down?

@Boris_yo If you forget your password, you're in trouble. But that's kind of the whole point.

@SimonSheehan There is a slowdown because of the CPU having to decrypt your data, while otherwise the CPU is not involved.

8:24 PM
@SimonSheehan It requires some additional processing to decrypt data on the fly in the file system driver (or somewhere near it), but that's CPU, and they usually are bored anyway.

@DanielBeck Looks like i was right about slow computer.

There was a talk at 28C3 in December about a project that stores AES keys in CPU debug registers to prevent cold boot attacks. Very cool.

And it kind of depends on what algorithm you choose how much it will slowown.

@Boris_yo Well, not usually, as your CPU is rarely at peak load.

You mean 64-bit, 128-bit, 256-bit etc.? @TomWijsman

8:27 PM
@Boris_yo More likely the algorithm than the bitness.
AES for example, is an encryption algorithm.

If AES is encryption, what is algorithm?

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a specification for the encryption of electronic data. It has been adopted by the U.S. government and is now used worldwide. It supersedes DES. The algorithm described by AES is a symmetric-key algorithm, meaning the same key is used for both encrypting and decrypting the data. In the United States, AES was announced by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as U.S. FIPS PUB 197 (FIPS 197) on November 26, 2001 after a five-year standardization process in which fifteen competing designs were presented and evaluated before it was selecte...

@Boris_yo AES is the algorithm.

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm (from Algoritmi, the Latin form of Al-Khwārizmī) is a step-by-step procedure for calculations. More precisely, it is an effective method expressed as a finite list of well-defined instructions for calculating a function. Algorithms are used for calculation, data processing, and automated reasoning. Starting from an initial state and initial input (perhaps empty), the instructions describe a computation that, when executed, will proceed through a finite number of well-defined successive states, eventually producing "output" and term...

Or at least the algorithm is an essential part of AES.

8:29 PM
@DanielBeck I thought it has particular name in disk encryption.

@Boris_yo What's it?

Algorithms have names, do they?
Winrar has compressing algorithm which has a name by itself.
Personally never heard of its name.

Well, see what I wrote. AES is one such algorithm.

Encryption = algorithm?
Only when referring to AES i mean?

@Boris_yo Algorithm just means a procedure for calculating things.

8:33 PM
In cryptography, encryption is the process of transforming information (referred to as plaintext) using an algorithm (called a cipher) to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing special knowledge, usually referred to as a key. The result of the process is encrypted information (in cryptography, referred to as ciphertext). The reverse process, i.e. to make the encrypted information readable again is referred to as decryption, (i.e. to make it unencrypted). In many contexts, the word encryption may also implicitly refer to the reverse process, decryption e.g. “software f...

Search algorithm, compression algorithm, encryption algorithm... Right?

Yeah.

@Boris_yo For example. Then there's of course the corresponding decryption algorithm.

Can't understand why people put helms in eating contests:

X_X

8:35 PM
@Boris_yo Can't understand why people participate in eating contests.

@DanielBeck If you could win lots of cash, would you participate?

lol. Cash Vs Stomach. Choose one.

@Boris_yo How much is "lots"?

$1M

@Bibhas Well, no, afterwards you have a lot of both.

8:37 PM
@DanielBeck Stretching stomach in the end...

@DanielBeck I look at that picture and I think I'm happy with what I have.

@DanielBeck But yeah, you would have to practice a lot.
@Bibhas :)
What stupid things people are willing to do for cash...

@Boris_yo I'm leaving now, before we start discussing reality TV. Good night everyone!

@DanielBeck Night!

:D
@DanielBeck Good night. :D

8:40 PM
Jackass? That is horrible. Bad thing is that it has following, that does not understand "Do not try this at home".

Good night everyone.

@Bibhas You too.

2 hours later…
10:54 PM
@DanielBeck EMT do the opposite, somehow. :D
Give out tons of cash for food, they don't get fat.. I guess they work out a lot.
I think this search query is full of duplicates...

11:41 PM
morning

Anyone want to attempt improving this? Got some issues seeing characters

Morning.

working on fixing that @SimonSheehan

@JourneymanGeek thanks!

11:54 PM
he pasted it from somewhere i think

Yeah, it does appear that way

thanks!

I hope i got it right ;p
