@Dog I assume they are signaling something to their team players while concealing it from view of the opposing team.

I just realized I haven't used browser bookmarks in years to link to actual sites...

Dog
@ThatBrazilianGuy Same, just curious what it means/why
Like what can they see that their teammates can't already see too?

I think it means something they will do next, like, "throw the ball on the face of the one on the right while I round house kick the left one"

Bob
@Dog yea that's the one I was looking at but no B40
@Dog huh, nice... at $600 a bit too much for me to bother right now (I can get a $200 modem for all three of em...) but it's an interesting option
I wonder if there's a dual-SIM variant

Dog
@Bob Yeah, one of those cases if you want everything in one unit, you'll have to pay a lot more. And probably still not get what you want.
Again, I'm kinda spoilt with the SGS7, maybe you are too and your standards for band support are too high :-P

Bob
3:08 PM
@Dog how long is that?

Dog
@Bob I've done 4 hours and still had 70% battery left...

Bob
@Dog or there are entirely too many bands in use here? :P
huh, nice

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ok :D

Dog
@Bob Meh, I travel to the U.S., Asia, and Europe, so decent band support actually matters.
For people who never leave the UK or EU, maybe less so. But meh.

Bob
ah
I rarely leave AU
but just about all of em are used here -_-

3:09 PM
hmm

Bob
@Dog just seems a bit ridiculous that just the modem costs a good chunk of the price of a full phone including screen, powerful SoC, etc.

See? @GuilhermeNascimento agrees! Don't we totally go to work mounted on alligators?

Dog
@Bob It does?

@Rahul2001 I have a small subset of sites I always go to bookmarked. Nearly everything else is an RSS feed ;p

Dog
TBH a modern high-end modem takes half as much silicon and board space as the main CPU.

Bob
3:11 PM
@Dog Z5 compact for... $500 min. One of the better Telstra modems (with worse band support) is ~$200

@ThatBrazilianGuy alligators are north american

Dog
@Bob Well yeah, but the lower volume products often have prices that don't really bear any resemblance to their bill of materials

Bob
point
still annoying as the consumer :P

My bookmarks bar:

The black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) is a large crocodilian and, along with the American alligator, is one of the biggest extant members of the family Alligatoridae and order Crocodilia. It is a carnivorous reptile that lives along slow-moving rivers, lakes, seasonally flooded savannas of the Amazon basin, and in other freshwater habitats of South America. It is a quite large species, growing to sizes of at least 5 m (16 ft) and possibly up to 6 m (20 ft) in length, which make it the biggest reptile in the Neotropical ecozone. As their name implies, the black caiman has a dark coloration, as an...

3:12 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy People think Brazil is just "Amazon" and "Rio de Janeiro". jejeje

You mean caiman. Tho in reality you ride warchariots drawn by ROUS capybara.

@JourneymanGeek

Dog
Centre bottom - modem. Centre top - SoC
Top right - flash IIRC, centre-left: PMIC

!! s/caiman/**jacaré**.

Bob
3:13 PM
@Dog Of course there's different variants, too... ebay.com.au/itm/… no B40 apparently

@ThatBrazilianGuy That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

Dog
Bottom left... can't remember... secondary modem?

@JourneymanGeek I don't launder my illegal money on jacarés, that would be silly.

@Bob pretty certain if you can find the OEM version...

Dog
@Bob Nah, lazy bastards probably copied the wrong spec list

3:15 PM
lol

@GuilhermeNascimento And we speak Spanish, obviously!

@ThatBrazilianGuy what's a jacaré in english?

Dog
The only variants are the E5803 with LTE Cat 4 and the E5823 witth LTE Cat 6.

@ThatBrazilianGuy LOL

laptop is lagging and that's doing strange things

Dog
3:16 PM
TBH I only picked that one out of the air because I've known from past experience that Sony are one of the few/only manufacturers that don't skimp on specs on their "Compact"/"Mini" series phones.
Whereas everyone else just takes the specs of their >2 year old flagship and rebadges it as a current gen "Mini"

@JourneymanGeek I'm googling it to be really sure, but as far as I can tell it's an aligator-crocodile-caiman-like animal.
Some thing get confusing on translations. Like plants not being vegetables. This infuriates me on an insane level.

@DavidPostill sorry if I offended in any way, just wanted to say that was a little rude, but I did not mean to offend. And I understood your earlier arguments about the use of chat, thank you :)

@GuilhermeNascimento Cara. Calma. Tá tudo bem agora.
[/brazilian-meme]

Bob
@Dog band support on the Samsung J1 mini is actually decent

@GuilhermeNascimento I always find its useful to hang out on a chatroom a bit to try to understand its culture

3:19 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Ok, blz :D

Dog
@Bob But the CPU and RAM sucks

Bob
And it's only something like $140

@ThatBrazilianGuy As people see Brazil:

Bob
only cat4 though

Dog
3:19 PM
Wait there's a J1 mini?

Bob
@Dog as a modem, CPU and RAM aren't too important
wait

Dog
Ah nxt

Bob
> 4G Network 4G/LTE, 700, 850, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2600
@Dog different apparently :\
^ but that seems to cover all AU bands for $140

Dog
@Bob Tru dat. But in general, they tend to get skimped on on Mini versions, except with Sony. I wanted a mini current-gen flagship, not a two year old phone with the current gen's name.

Bob
if only it did CA

3:21 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy I did not know this. hehehe

@GuilhermeNascimento: finally someone in this room to fully comprehend my deep, hellfire-fueled hatred for Brazilian banks "security" solutions.

Dog
The J2 does have shitty band support tho according to gsmarena: 1,3,5,8,40.
It doesn't even spill onto two lines, let alone three

@ThatBrazilianGuy really we have several problems :/

Bob
@Dog Looks like I can grab a Z5 Compact off Amazon UK for 525 AUD

Dog
3:23 PM
You could always buy a second hand/damaged/faulty S7 and use that, since as a modem you'll not really care about the camera, touchscreen, etc.

Bob
or off eGlobal for 500 AUD

@ThatBrazilianGuy Thanks! :D

Bob
@Dog would be annoying to enable/disable outdoors
if the touchscreen didn't work

Dog
@Bob Bluetooth mouse!
Err, yeah. Or not

Bob
lol

3:23 PM
@GuilhermeNascimento And all of them, online-banking-wise, translates to diebold/warsaw/"guardião". If I could kill either Hitler or this "security" solution, I would have a hard time deciding.

Dog
Actually you can use it as a bluetooth modem, or just leave BT on to trigger it remotely.

Bob
@Dog I actually looked and there's no damaged Z5s on ebay

Dog
Heck with all the gesture sensors and crap on these phones you could just program it to turn on the hotspot if you waved it in a certain way

Bob
@Dog I suppose I can use Tasker to do that
...why is there another conversation about killing Hitler in Brazil?

Hey @Dog how are you :) hey @Bob hey @ThatBrazilianGuy hey @JourneymanGeek hi everyone :)

Bob
3:24 PM
Why is Hitler in Brazil?

Dog
@Bob Yeah or have tasker respond to the volume buttons, or w/e

Bob
@Dog now the problem is actually finding a damaged one for cheap :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy I'm shocked, it was the craziest story I ever read. "bizarro"

I like that sound please continue

Bob
3:26 PM
@Dog this would be nice but it's a E5803

> Mengele, in the 1960s, had secluded several surrogate mothers in a Brazilian clinic and fertilised them with ova each carrying a sample of Hitler's DNA preserved since World War II.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Seriously, don't. We can see your message.
Overping, and you shall be FLAGGED as OFFENSIVE

@JourneymanGeek That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

Well to be perfectly honest I didn't know that marking someones name like that creates the ping noise.

Bob
3:27 PM
there's zero damaged S7s

Please tell me how to offend you so that I can be flagged and removed immediately.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Wow, haven't you been on this room for like months?

@ThatBrazilianGuy amazing reference to the movie XD

@ThatBrazilianGuy Brazilian LOL?

@GuilhermeNascimento Most people in this room already know where I live.
And where I work
And my name

OH F$%#!

Dog
If you skip the LTE-CA requirement then there's quite a few cheap-ish devices that support B28 and B40. But the minute you add LTE-CA and those bands, you've basically only got flagships available.

3:33 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy what else do we know?

I wish I didn't have such an uncommon name. I once was fired because of it.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I think the Rio de Janeiro (non-rainforest :p)

@Dog I just noticed :P

Also saw the Xperia XA, which is the same

Dual-SIM would actually be more useful.
But they're basically nonexistent.
Non-CA isn't really any better than the cheap modems I already have.

Q: How does Android play music from the lock screen?

Verbal KintHow does Android handle applications like MP3 player apps that run when the screen is locked (i.e. the user has to input their pin)? > The HTC 10 Lifestyle will stand in place of the proper HTC 10 in some parts of the world, India so far confirmed. Much like the LG G5 in certain regions, the HTC 10 Lifestyle comes with a Snapdragon 652 chipset, where the Snapdragon 820 should have been, and it only gets 3GB of RAM and a single 32GB storage option.

The other downgrade is LTE speed, but it comes as part of the chipset package. As opposed to the HTC 10's Cat.9 (450Mbps down, 50Mbps up), the 10 Lifestyle only gets Cat.6 (300Mbps/50Mbps).

@JourneymanGeek Long story short, I worked briefly on a tech support callcenter for an ISP. Off-hours I was at a friends house and had to call said tech support. I identified myself by the first name. Clueless tech answered and couldn't tell his hands from feets. I told him the exact screen on the exact tool where to fix the issue. Over the phone. Never told I worked there, but it was obvious. I was polite the whole time. Next day at work, I had a complaint filed against me.

Dog
If it's a cheaper version for India, I wonder if you could import it cheaply?
And it has full APAC band support

I do wonder though, if these Cat 6 devices only support 2x CA, or whether they could work with, e.g. 20+10+10 3x CA

@Dog Yea, I was actually just thinking that :P
Luckily it seems Optus and Telstra only do 2x
Vodafone is the funny 3x

@BenN That seems to give me an icon to select system language but doesn't give me a way to change keyboard layout :-/

Just came up with an idea for my old tablet: use it as a satnav device in place of a traditional GPS receiver.
It'll work great as a GPS tracker so I can easily log my adventures.
The tablet can't run Android 6.0 or later; it's on Android 5.1 (as CyanogenMod 12.1).

and yea in america if you really were from the future, and tried to prove it, you would be locked up "for your own good" first, then dissected by the corporations and goverments for the data ..

Took ages to acquire a GPS fix. The 2012 Nexus 7 doesn't seem to properly support A-GPS 😑

@djsmiley2k Lol. On Windows 10?

I thought the GPS was broken 😓

Find the screen from my screenshot earlier i.imgur.com/Hr5Hs5e.png and click Remove
It's like Start => Edit keyboard and Language options => Additional settings => Change input methods => Options => Remove
Cause Microsoft had to remove every useful option from the new "Metro" control panel and make it even harder to reach any settings you actually want to use

9:38 PM
@bwDraco could be the link to the server to aquire such data is now broken. (all links die) . on my nokia it was so stupid that if it did not get to an agps server, it would never ever aquire a 3D fix. so stupid to create a despendancy like that, when a good sirfstar gps reciever (and good antenna) designed for standalone would have aquired a full rack of satts in less than one minute.

Dog
@Psycogeek Yeah Android has some bugs like that sometimes.
If I turn my GPS on while in airplane mode/on an airplane it'll just hang about forever never getting a fix, if I turned it off and back on again with mobile signal it'd lock in 5 seconds.

All the phones seem to depend on, but not require (like that stupid first implementation) . but they are such sad gps recievers , poor reception, too many other signals flying about, still today a good standalone gps unit with the real sirfstar chips stuff is way bettern'

Dog
I'd agree when it comes to earlier phones, but these days I find decent phone receivers to be excellent.
They've improved massively since e.g. 2012
Half the time I still get impressed when I'm randomly about with my phone in the bathroom or something (two walls indoors) and it randomly picks up a GPS fix

agps data can last like 7-14 days if stored proper. one cannot know the ability of an agps system, until they are without connect for days on end.

Dog
Like whaa? Even my good old trusty SirfStar 3 would only get a lock indoors in a room that had at least one window
Whereas my first Android phone(s) would barely manage to get a GPS fix indoors if I was holding up against the window, the latest ones easily get a fix at the furthest end of the room from the window, or even without windows in the second to top floor

9:47 PM
yea even a real sirfstar chip, one unit will not lock easily untill you get outside, and some unit with a very similar chip, will have all the sats in a concrete cave.

Dog
Also it must be said even the best GPS fall flat vs. WiFi positioning when surrounded by a hundred stacks of metal shelves and books
So it's nice to have diversity
Funny thing is, earlier Android phones advertised some sort of "Indoor GPS" using GPS-assisted inertial-based positioning.

yea why anyone would need a gps indoors :-) then they invented apps that can direct you to the right section of a wallmart.

Dog
Oddly enough I never saw that actually used, and it seemed to have just quietly disappeared
Modern phones could probably do fine for a few minutes without GPS, based on inertial positioning alone. But they don't seem to use it at all.
I mean it's not perfect, apparently the inertial positioning drift on a phone isn't good enough for VR sessions lasting more than a few minutes, but when in a car/train/etc. going through a tunnel, even a few metres drift over a minute is perfectly fine.

my phone has the "compass" thing it it, that was interesting when the navigation program supports it. prior to that you had to have 2 gps reads a from and a to. before it could determine the actual direction of travel.

Dog
I prefer using the GPS directional indicators anyway, it tends to be more accurate than the compass.
Compass is OK when stationary or moving at slow speeds. In a vehicle, using multiple GPS reads is far more accurate anyway.
Heck the compass drifts by like 30' in five minutes on the bus sometimes

9:56 PM
yea what is that? sometimes mine is "drifting" sliding sideways as the compass points offset about 20* I dont drive that bad, and i was walking anyway.

One of the limitations of the old Nexus 7 is that it lacks GLONASS support, which means that tracking accuracy is not as good as newer devices.
