Hey guys, anyone familiar with ffdshow tryouts lately?
I used to use it all the time, but now it's not working for me or a friend of mine. I remember it should just work after installation, but it isn't now. It's been years since I used it though.
Windows 10, WMP 12 (I think, or is it a new version on W10 now?)
Is there a simple fix I'm missing? Or should I just post a new question on here?

@BenRichards I spent an age trying to get it to work in Win8 and failed
In the end I just transcoded the files to a sensible format

@Mokubai I don't even know what version of Windows my friend is using honestly.
He wants to use it so he can adjust the color balance and so forth. He has specific needs and uses a wide gamut display.

@BenRichards If he's got an Nvidia card you can do that in the video settings of the NV control panel maybe....

@Mokubai I don't know. But this might be a necessary thing for multiple systems. He's an AV nerd and has a lot of equipment
AMD cards have the same thing too but I'm not sure if it covers all of what he needs.

Fair enough, well I tried getting ffdshow to do any decoding but couldn't get anything (mpc-hc, vlc, wmp) to actually make use of it. With mpc-hc even disabling the built-in decoders just left me with broken video and no audio. That OS could have just been hosed though, it was a tad unhealthy after the Win7 -> Win8 -> Win8.1 updates...

Ok
I remember using it regularly on Windows 7. But by the time Windows 8 came around I didn't have it installed anymore and didn't need it (I used it because of anime fansubs, but my watching had by then gone to internet streams)
So my experience stopped at Windows 7
The website says it should work with Windows 8 and forward though.

Pretty much likewise, the videos I did want to keep were easy and short enough to bite the bullet and transcode from mkv (h.264 + ogg audio) to mp4 with sensible settings

Aha
Well since I tried it and also am having difficulty getting it to work I now really want to figure out how to fix it.

@BenRichards what actual problem are you having?
Not being used or no audio?

@Mokubai It's not being used at all. I tried changing some settings, adding an overlay, and none of these things get picked up when I play video files. I made sure that ffdshow was enabled for all video codecs. I tried both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions.
The icon doesn't show up in the tray and the info pane in the video decoder settings isn't showing an open file or anything like that.
The video plays and none of the settings I change seem to affect it.
I don't have any files that are in a format that I know WMP doesn't support, so I can't test that it works with those.
If it plays those, then I would know it's just defaulting to its own no matter what I set in the ffdshow settings. If it doesn't play them, then I know that it just isn't picking up the codecs, and settings, at all.

an SF forum post for ffdshow (sourceforge.net/p/ffdshow-tryout/discussion/597593/thread/…) seems to suggest that LAVFilters might be better, or at least supported more... github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases
Looks like it uses ffmpeg anyway...

Ah
I'll have to take a look later. Don't really have the time to do much more debugging right now while at work.

@bwDraco Free phone! ;P

Nope. I'm getting a Nexus 5X.

@bwDraco We?

(I'm on a cheap basic phone right now. If I just take the offer, I'd probably just get a better feature phone with 3G support, but not a smartphone.)
The Nexus 5X saw another price drop, this time for Valentine's Day, so there really isn't a better time to upgrade.
This will be my first smartphone.

The 5X is my next planned upgrade.

...and I happen to be using a cheap basic phone with only 2G support. I'm the only one on the account who got this message (the others have 3G phones).
The reason I got this text message is that AT&T is shutting down their 2G service to free up spectrum for 4G LTE.
I'll need new USB cabling sigh

Newegg updated the product images, including a package contents image (a Newegg tradition).
This probably means that Newegg has gotten its first units in stock; the release date listed (02/29/2016) is probably wrong by a long shot. The ROCCAT official product page gives "start of Feb" for the release date.
(For most products, Newegg provides a package contents image, showing the product packaging and complete package contents, as the last image in a series of product images. The previous images provided by Newegg for this keyboard were merely press images supplied by ROCCAT.)
Cherry MX Brown key switches.
I have a standing pre-order for this keyboard.

Huh... I just accidentally discovered that Alt-F3 is a reverse Alt-Tab

on what OS?

Or I guess an alternative to Alt-Shift-Tab.
Windows 7.

ah, doesn't do anything for me on 8.1
too riskily close to Alt-F4 for my blood anyway :)

Oh yea, I wouldn't ever use it either.

Alt-F3 doesn't do anything at all on my Windows 7 :/

9:28 PM
- Full N-key rollover (ROCCAT says 30 keys, which for all intents and purposes is N-key rollover)
- Cherry MX key switches and laser-etched, UV-coated keycaps
- Fully remappable keys, plus Easy-Shift[+] for an additional layer of customization
- Per-key RGB lighting
- Dual ARM Cortex-M processors (if the chips are identical to the Ryos MK Pro, http://www.modders-inc.com/roccat-ryos-mk-pro-mechanical-keyboard-review/3/, it's 100 MHz Cortex-M3 + 50 MHz Cortex-M0)
- 2 MB onboard NAND allowing storage of more than 500 macros
It appears each key has its own isolation diode. Although this is expensive, it means the keyboard has true N-key rollover, absolutely no ghosting or jamming.

@DavidPostill Yea, I noticed that Shift-Alt-Tab works here as well, but I can here the Windows error ding! noise whenever I press the key combo.
Must be something local.

@bwDraco I had a Roccat mouse, their driver software sucks and is vaguely pointless. At least Logitech let you use Lua to put scripts on the mouse buttons. I still do have the thing if I can be bothered to replace the damn micro-switches in it.

9:57 PM
Their painful "upload settings" to their mouse shares something in common with flashing the BIOS on your computer, in that if the program crashes it can brick your mouse. Thankfully I had a spare mouse I could plug in to re-run their software and reflash the thing so it could work again.

10:12 PM
@Mokubai My FUNC mouse is the same. They require a second mouse to be able to flash the firmware because you need to click next at some part of the process...

11:11 PM
Phone system is down... Makes calling people difficult! D:

11:24 PM
"call the helpdesk to report a system outage"

11:44 PM
@Mokubai heh, I loved their driver software
their hardware died for me, repeatedly
@allquixotic pretty much. And No one particularly likes the alternatives
