Hm. That was annoying.

With GPS and me giving directions, dad managed to turn a 20 min drive to 1 hour.

Bob
11:40 AM
@Saladin ...ouch

Bob
@Saladin And that, ladies and gents, is why you don't try to use regex for this kind of matching.

i have an error parsing particular line in file, that file is shown in screenshot. I don't want any matches for 1.2.2.2/bash ?

Bob
You have space delimited data.
Use the spaces.

@bob .... If only people would listen....

11:42 AM
@Bob what about that 1% joke with regex ? It still fresh in my memory

Bob
!!tell 24769137 xkcd regex problems

Bob
It's actually not really a joke.

Hey guys :D Long time.

Bob
Using regex sparingly can solve problems.
Using regex when you shouldn't? You end up making more problems.
@Nick 'lo.

11:45 AM
@Bob isn't there a zalgo regex answer on so?
I'd link but I'm on my phone.

@Bob: What are your opinions on Natural Language Processing as it is today?

@Nick it sucks. Never works for me :p

Yay!

(I mean
Whatever I say, it goes woof woof woof aoooo?)
More seriously, my accent does break most voice recognition.

Time to post a link to this answer ;)

A: RegEx match open tags except XHTML self-contained tags

bobinceYou can't parse [X]HTML with regex. Because HTML can't be parsed by regex. Regex is not a tool that can be used to correctly parse HTML. As I have answered in HTML-and-regex questions here so many times before, the use of regex will not allow you to consume HTML. Regular expressions are a tool th...

Bob
11:56 AM
@Nick Speech recognition? So-so. Works if you speak clearly.
@Nick Natural language processing? Decent, but only for fairly specific requests. Still trips up fairly often.
@JourneymanGeek Not quite relevant :P
That one was against regex parsing in place of a proper DOM parser.

@JourneymanGeek Who was wrong? You or the GPS? ;)

Bob
Regex has its uses for scraping from a block of text, but will be inaccurate.
When your data source has a fixed format already, using that format would be the smart way.
@DavidPostill "turn left at the next intersection" ... ... "you just missed it"

@DavidPostill my dad. :p

@Bob If I do that "Tommy" calculates a new route to get me back on track :)

'Take the rightmost lane' he misses it and hits the expressway

Bob
12:01 PM
@DavidPostill "ok, then take the next left" ... ... ... ... "...did you just miss it again?"
alternatively: "take the next left" ... ... *next exit in 34km*

@JourneymanGeek The mainland of Singapore measures 50 kilometres (31 mi) from east to west and 26 kilometres (16 mi) from north to south. How can you have exits 34 km apart? Do you have a motorway with a start, an end and one exit in the middle?

Bob
@DavidPostill was a joke

You can drive the whole length of the island in the extra 40 minutes ;)

Bob
and I just make up 34km randomly

@Bob As was my post :/

Bob
12:06 PM
<== Australian -- 34km is nothing
@DavidPostill more odd that you replied to my joke by pinging JMG o.O
thought you might've thought he said that
and now I've confused myself

It was a mistake :/
@Bob I remember being on a coach in AU. From somewhere to somewhere else on the east coast (on the way to Heron Island). All I could see out of the window pretty much the whole day was burnt Eucalyptus trees. We stopped (unscheduled by my request to the driver) in a small town as I had an infected foot and needed to see a doctor.

Bob
Ouch.
Yea, I was (a passenger, thank god) on a drive from Sydney to Melbourne. ~9 hours on the road.
And that's a relatively close & densely-populated area.
Perth to Darwin? Darwin to Alice Springs? Whole lot of nothingness.

is there a way to see at what lines does sed fails?

Bob
You have to define "fail".
If it doesn't find the match you want, that's probably not a failure as far as the tool is concerned.
There's a few regex testing tools.

Like i have 50k file when I pick and choose lines write in temp files sed cmd works otherwise on original file it fails giving empty record?
I see there must be something like in error in parsing which is making it write no data.

Bob
12:21 PM
Make sure you're passing the correct multiline options.
afk for a bit

@Bob multilines but I see my logs are in single line terminated .
silkman@Silky-flows:~/tmp$ sed -nE 's/(^[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}) .* http:\/\/(.*?)\s+.*/\1 \2/p'

2 hours later…
Bob
2:02 PM
That weird spiky behaviour is what WinSAT randomly kicking in looks like.
That and a corresponding increase in temps and fan noise, and a switch to the basic theme.
I wonder who thought it'd be a good idea to run that automatically...

@Bob why does that look like keygen written by 15 year old ?

Bob
And then there's this, apparently:
@tereško Most hardware manufacturers aren't particularly known for writing beautiful software.

seriously, all these tools like like crap

Bob
AMD's Catalyst, Nvidia's control panel... both look shit.

well, those look like "designed by a developer"
thing's above look more like "designed by a wannabe"

Bob
2:09 PM
@tereško Not really.
Everything's aligned.
I've seen worse.
The colour scheme is a matter of taste (admittedly more suited for the 90s, IMO), but the actual UIs aren't that bad.

@DavidPostill @Bob: "Take the LEFT lane to braddel" Dad takes the slip road into the expressway
@tereško: almost all GPU speed things look like that
they all look shite

true

@Bob when is the case when using ! for sed it doesn't provide you un-matched lines?
i pipe it with less and it shows empty stdout

I suspect there is a major overlap between people who make keygens an people who make overclocking tools

Bob
@asad Uhm... any reason you're asking me specifically? o.O
I don't usually use sed anyway, let alone for matching. That's what grep is for.

2:19 PM
@Bob :) you are such pro. I'm not
You can choose I cannot I haven't reached your level
Yes I'm stuck.

Q: Parsing, reformating log file using sed or perhaps a script?

asadI have a case, a file which I need to post-process. The sample format is given below:- bigspeedpro.com Intel::DOMAIN from http://malc0de.com/bl/BOOT via intel.criticalstack.com F 1.1.1.1 Intel::DOMAIN from http://abcd.com/bl/BOOT via intel.criticalstack.com F Expected output is :--...

My logic is simple , when something fails I want to know where? how? I don't want to shift to anything else, because that would be "escaping problem"

Bob
Oh, you changed your name.
@asad That... is totally not the point.
You are making the job far harder than it needs to be.

Q: Sed parsing >50 MB file with over 50k lines failing with no error

asadI'm parsing a description file (given in question) with this magic sed sudo sed -nE 's/(^[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}.[0-9]{1,3}) .* http://(.?)\s+.$/!\1 \2/p' Even when I copy sample lines from orginial files and put in temp file it works but on complete file its failing. I tried deb...

wrong question:)

Bob
I've told you the tools I would recommend for the job.
If you insist on using sed, so be it - but that's not my problem.

this is correct one not the old one
@Bob :) you would make such a great teacher. only if i can afford you.

Bob
... ... ... ? :S

2:23 PM
enlighten me? :S??

2:34 PM
@asad: Might I suggest reading the scrollback?
Cause we said sed isn't the right tool
and well....
People coming in here and demanding to be handheld is getting a WEE bit tiresome.
@tereško i.imgur.com/uxidaa2.png This is what mine uses.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I need to check if Gigabyte has one.
But the MSI one still works, so that's probably good enough for now :P

@Bob: MOST of them are based off the same tool I suspect
actually I'm tempted to go back to the asus one

Bob
@JourneymanGeek According to this, that's a no :P

Ahh
For some reason I remembered gigabyte was based off rivatool
And GPU tweak is a graphical clone of afterburner.
Firestorm is just... uniquely fugly

3:38 PM
the mains briefly flickered and made my PC go off -_-
it wasn't a long-enough interruption to cause my microwave to beep, so I thought it might have been my PSU
but apparently the TV downstairs blipped too, so, confirmed, not the PSU

Bob
4:17 PM
@allquixotic UPS?

4:33 PM
hello can i desable image /css for specific website .for example i want to desable images on stackoverflow then images inside stackoverflow shoudn't load.i read some relavant answers but it describe how to desable i image with specific url/domain .

@Bob Never bought one.
With the incoming Flash+SuperCap protected RAID controller, I'm even less motivated to get a UPS
Pending writes will be safe

cant get rid of this i.stack.imgur.com/avHqa.png
some bcd editor program messed the bcd up
because EFI wouldnt let me dual boot
it was windows 10 and XP, xp was in legacy mode win 10 was in efi mode
then I deleted windows xp removed the win 10 ssd and installed 7 on the HDD
now the SSD is blank but if I plug it in UEFI always boots to that and gives the BCD error above there is no way to change it in BIOS
yeah im confused too
I think my error is different to the one above slightly
if I put the SSD in but keep legacy mode disabled I can get to win7 and it will see the ssd
but even if enable then disable legacy mode I have to remove the ssd again to get tin win 7
and UEFI is calling things the wrong names, it is saying the CD drive is the SSD and it is saying that a USB hard drive is Pxe boot
win7 is using EFI also
when I had 10 and XP the only way I could get into XP was after the win setup cd rebooted the pc but then I couldnt get into 10 IIRC

5:25 PM
Sup folks ! This superuser.com/q/987998/418028 has been cross posted on askubuntu . . .I'd guess it's crossposted on U&L as well. Let the mods know and figure something out with this one

has anyone here has had his hands on Steam Controller?

thomas the tank
not me

6:09 PM
@RecycleBin the confusion is why do they put the efi booting partition as seperated , i do not like that. While the system has always been able to re-point to some system and therefore hop around partitions and even disks to get to where it is going, i prefer the hardware point to the disk to boot to, and the whole "system" in one all-in-one partition.
once they include complete insanity , for the purposes of doing just about anything, any way, with all manner of thing that must be correct, this is why we get to have 20 different ways it Can't boot :-)

thats the advantage of UEFI anyhow
whats*

The advantage of UEFI is to have layers of new software and hardware connections to exploit , , , of course :-)

brilliant.

6:38 PM
@JourneymanGeek: Are you operating a sock of some sort? An account named Ash (the name of your dog), with a very similar avatar, is present in this chat room.

Wolve.

6:49 PM
With DavidPostill and Journeyman Geek pushing so many answers and getting so much rep, I think it might be a good idea to lower my answer quality standards to push more content. Should I?

@MichaelFrank This is the philosophy behind every answer I write. I don't post an answer unless I can actually answer the question definitively.
Jan 20 at 2:04, by DragonLord
It's still a leap of faith for me each time I hit the Post Your Answer button, even 300 answers later
@tereško Sorry, but I have to flag this for mod attention. The animated GIF is 73 MB in size, which is dragging my connection down.

damn
you really should see what you get about that connection of yours too

@tereško Mind if I change that to be just a link?

Yeah, I've been trying to get an upgrade.

how can I make a web page into a text document
keeping the photos

@Undo it would be actually nice

7:00 PM
@tereško done :)

tnx

Thanks.

I am running the cheapest connection I can get in this apartment, which is 100Mbps

@tereško What are they charging you?

@Undo Too much for poor DSL service (<1 Mbps).
@tereško: In future, try Gfycat

7:02 PM
@Undo I think it's €14

Where do I have to move to get such deals?

+ I have to pay additional €10 for my unlimited 4G

The US has slow and expensive Internet. It sucks.

100 Mbps O_O

@DragonLord It's because we put up with it

7:03 PM
I am living with a 100kbps

I'm working with only about 700 Kbps right now.

I live in Latvia (it's a small post-soviet country)

In Europe, government owns infrastructure, so there's always competition.

If us Americans all cut our DSL lines, we could probably make ourselves miserable for a month while the ISPs laugh at us and wait until we can't take it any more and come back.

In the US, telcom owns infrastructure and usually has exclusive use of it.
I'm hoping to switch to cable soon.

7:05 PM
this is on my phone, no bandwidth limitation, 10 euros

That's a good reason to permaban

:D

Jun 13 at 0:00, by DragonLord
The cable ISP recently rolled out upgrades, so now even the cheapest plan is about 4x as fast as our DSL connection
3 Mbps for $15 a month.

that's painful

We're currently paying more than $25 for <1 Mbps.
@tereško Even that is much better than what I currently have.
This DSL service just sucks. Period.

7:09 PM
I usually find a movie, start torrenting, go take a piss
and when I am back, the movie has finished downloading

That's how bad this connection is.
It just sucks. Not much more to say.

giggle
"slower than 97% of US"
also, you probably should uninstall flash

Flash is ask-to-activate.
Flash content won't load without my consent.

yeah .. so how does that deal with ad-networks?

Aug 19 at 0:36, by allquixotic
@DragonLord Had that for years. It's trash. They are not maintaining their DSL network at all anymore. Just running the equip until it dies.
Verizon High Speed Internet is anything but "High Speed".

7:19 PM
Have you though about emigrating to UK or Canada?

ikr
ISP's keep centoring stuff too

!! s/centoring/censoring/

@DragonLord ISP's keep censoring stuff too (source)

WHOA this word doc is 2000 pages long

Not everything about the US is bad. That's on my phone. Get rekt. :D (and yes, I have unlimited data, currently using 250 GB this month and I have ~15 days left on my monthly plan)

7:31 PM
Wow, that's a lot.

This is with a network that supports 2x2 MIMO carrier aggregation. My device supports 4x4, and the network will support that in a couple of months probably.
Should be able to hit 50 Mbps during off-peak times by this time next year.
The nice thing about it is not having to care where I am. Having high speed at home is nice enough, but having high speed basically anywhere that's within earshot of civilization is infinitely better.

@allquixotic I think there is something running in my downloads: speedtest.net/my-result/4754107421
well, at least I have 1ms ping

To what? Your neighbor?

backbone, I assume

Meh. I've never used a network service where my ping to the first hop was the limiting factor. It's always the network at large. Games? The ping to people on the other side of my country is 85% limited by the central hubs, only 15% of it is my uplink. Video, downloads... ping is irrelevant, just bandwidth matters. It's sufficient for my needs. And when I leave the house, my net comes with me. :D

7:40 PM
pick a country, I had 120ms ping to Silicon Valley
btw, yes, the bandwidth is more important than ping, but if you had to work on a remote system via SSH that has a low ping .. well .. it's a special kind of torture

mosh

kinda like that chinese drip thing

my ping to my dedicated server (pretty much the only server I'll ssh into with any regularity) is between 50 and 100 ms, with a bit of LTE jitter but nothing too spikey, and no packet loss... mosh smooths it out to the point where it feels like I'm typing locally

8:17 PM
@allquixotic Actually, our ping to the DSLAM is the main contributor to lag.
Oct 8 at 4:07, by DragonLord
Ping statistics for 10.32.6.1:
    Packets: Sent = 34, Received = 34, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 63ms, Average = 46ms
10.32.6.1 is the DSLAM. The majority of the latency to my server (located in Newark, NJ) is from this one hop (and traceroute confirms it).

Ping statistics for xx.xx.xx.xx:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 39ms, Maximum = 49ms, Average = 44ms
this is 8 hops (a VPS on Tilaa)

8:42 PM
how do you check how many hops the connection made

@RecycleBin tracert in Windows, or traceroute in Linux and OS X.

ah thanks

C:\WINDOWS\system32>tracert google.com

Tracing route to google.com [216.58.219.206]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 3 ms 14 ms 4 ms DRACO [192.168.1.2]
  2 46 ms 51 ms 40 ms 10.32.6.1
  3 48 ms 48 ms 48 ms P0-2-3-5.NYCMNY-LCR-21.verizon-gni.net [130.81.135.184]
  4 * * * Request timed out.
  5 43 ms 39 ms 53 ms 0.ae3.XL3.NYC1.ALTER.NET [140.222.226.31]
  6 44 ms 45 ms 50 ms 0.xe-10-0-1.GW13.NYC1.ALTER.NET [152.63.20.169]
The majority of the latency is from the DSLAM.
Notice the big jump in ping from the local router (first hop) to the DSLAM (second hop).
If you're curious about the last hop (1e100.net), see Google documentation: support.google.com/faqs/answer/174717?hl=en
@allquixotic ^^^

9:07 PM
hmmm

And then they push cloud technologies up our other side
Gosh, I need chkdsk because my server's ntfs partition got a bit corrupted from rebuilding the RAID but I don't have a win2003 cd
And I can't use hiren's boot cd because the SCSI RAID controller drivers don't work for windows XP, only 2003
And fsck.ntfs doesn't want to do anything for me, just tells me to use chkdsk and come back
And I can't find a decent chkdsk for DOS that works with NTFS and isn't from the 90s

Hilarious new blog The Sysadmin Diaries. I haven't stopping laughing for 10 minutes.

I'll see if I can hack the SCSI drivers

9:30 PM
Enough is enough!
I've simply had enough with this slow DSL.

Even 3/1 Mbps will make things so much easier for me.
Let alone 50 Mbps...

65 ms, that's awfully high ping.
Speeds are not the best, but they're serviceable.

3g mobile connection. I don't have any other internet where I'm currently staying.

1 hour later…
10:59 PM
@allquixotic: One thing to bear in mind about your new RAID card: It supports SAS 12Gb/s. You might want to get some new enterprise-class disks to take advantage of that.
Also, be sure to actively cool the card. It runs hotter than the Adaptec RAID 8805 (which itself requires active cooling, but has apparently been okay without the required airflow).
> Note: This Adaptec card contains a powerful RAID processor which requires adequate airflow to operate reliably. Please install this card only into server or PC chassis with recommended airflow (200 LFM).
22 hours ago, by DragonLord
> This board needs 200 LFM airflow
The card is designed with the assumption that it will be in a high-airflow server chassis with case fans continuously moving air across all parts. You may want to add a case fan onto your system.

I'm stumped. I guess I'm going to have to find a win2003 CD somewhere.

@oldmud0 you should be able to download it from MSDN site

I don't have an MSDN subscription

you could find someone online, who is willing to lend you a login for few minutes
that's how I did it
but that would require you to be actually known/recognized in some active online community

@DragonLord Nope. Only sock I own is aibobot, and that's completely inactive.

11:12 PM
I have a DreamSpark acct luckily, but since 2003 is EOL'D it doesn't show up.
Not sure if 2008 could work with the PERC drivers. Ugh what an ancient server.

@allq: You don't need a whole lot of airflow (200 LFM is only about 10 CFM over the surface of the heatsink) but you do want to actively cool the card nonetheless.

I just need working simultaneous access to chkdsk and the RAID array.
Except somebody at Dell decided that it wouldn't support XP, but it would support 2k3

@DragonLord wait, are you saying my answers are low quality?

@JourneymanGeek No, I'm saying I may be too picky about the quality of my answers.

(and just for the record, I'm not pushing answers. I'm more active since I have somewhat more free time)
!!No

11:26 PM

11:58 PM
I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.

I found a 2k3r2 evaluation CD with working recovery console... yay
And then I did chkdsk without even bothering to add /f in excitement
So now it's frozen until it's finished checking the fs, which is totally hosed
