I can't uncheck the read-only attribute on a folder in Windows 8.
It will let me uncheck it... and the dialog disappears when I click OK.
...but when I bring it back up, the checkbox is checked again.

@JourneymanGeek A Wiki for Elder Scrolls games.
@GeorgeEdison Have you checked whether you have enough Permissions on the folder and its parent folder? You could try to run an attrib on it...

2:53 AM
@TomWijsman It's okay - I finally solved the problem another way.
The folder was C:\ProgramData\MySQL...
...so I just had MySQL use a different folder.

Well @Sathya the saga continues, got an email from Backify

7:06 AM
@IvoFlipse wow.

yeah the saga continues :P

I wanted to type that, but I saw that you'd already typed it :P

@Sathya too bad the timing for Hacker News aint right
ah well :P

heh. well, upvoted anyway
> So, the step taken by LiveDrive to close our customers' accounts without refunding us is totally illegal, and we are considering our legal options at this time. Since your account was already paid fully for one year in advance, we request you to get in touch with LiveDrive and ask them to restore your service

@Sathya Naah I'd rather not
I finally got rid of the shitty program
it didn't want to uninstall
Anyway I've been backing up to Crashplan the past two days, so just need to make sure I get that HDD replaced, since backing up external HDDs to it is iffy
BTW I like Google+ already, because apparently even geek.com used my post for their blog post :P
huzzah for 10 seconds of fame!

7:18 AM
@IvoFlipse :D

oeh its getting to the frontpage now :P
Strange btw I finally got rid of LiveDrive (needed a reboot) and now my computer seems fine again :S
Even though Klout says I'm in decline, that can't be right hehe

@Sathya strangely enough, if I add files to my backup to Crashplan, it looks like it 'starts' all over :S

@IvoFlipse you mean the already uploaded ones?

yeah
Think I might be using it the wrong way :P

@IvoFlipse O_o

I already uploaded my Photo's and I added Music, but now it says 190 Gb are remaining :S
odddddd
That's all I can see, I can't even see what's in it :S
While this is a trial I think its a trial for the wrong thing
I don't even have this tab ^^

woohoo! Thought this day will never come.

7:44 AM
ask better questions ;P

hehe :p
@IvoFlipse got the latest version?

installed yesterday :S
perhaps I'll email them to clarify it

yeah

XD
3 days to back up the 15 gb of data on my laptop, to my desktop...
unless this does it faster over lan, in which case i will feel like an idiot

AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Holy crap, what the hell is causing these spikes :S

process explorer time.

Already at your question ;P

Q: Why does WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.exe) keep spiking my CPU?

SathyaI generally keep my laptop on 24x7, and at the end of the day it's really annoying to have my thighs burnt because over overheating. The overheating seems to be a result of WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.exe) spiking the CPU utilization to 25% every few minutes. Why does this happen? I have an H...

I fear that this might be related to my hard drive failing too
It would be very ironic if all that was wrong was some app spiking whenever the drive was accessed, causing my computer to lock up

8:12 AM
@IvoFlipse dang, you beat me :P
though I doubt it's I/O related..

No idea how to use process explorer though :P
in my case it can't be the hp wireless crap

just open it, click on the CPU util column.

What's odd is that it often seems to be a single threaded program that messes with it
only one CPU locks up
I wanted to deinstall Soluto, because it also seems very active (just to be sure)
but it would revert all the changes :S
And I might deinstall RescueTime
Oh boy
It sometimes even hangs
but I can't see anything in the processes explorer :S

Oh god, @Sathya what was the problem with Sandy Bridge motherboards again?
> If this reads “REV_04” as in the provided example, then your motherboard is based on the B2 revision of the Cougar Point chipset and is affected by the SATA 3Gbps bug, otherwise you are in the clear.
Guess what mine says

8:48 AM
@IvoFlipse the SATA ports would slow down
check the event logs, @IvoFlipse

look for what?
btw I tore out all HDDs except for my SSD

check the errors/warnings
if it's a HDD problem it should be there

Its filled with them
Obviously when I tore out a drive too while it was still running

filter by desc

the error says: "Can't access HD" no shit sherlock

8:54 AM
lol
why did you remove it while running?

I had plugged in the failing disk in another S-ATA port, to see if it was just one port that was damaged
And I had to reboot after I did that anyway
but those drives that were still working contain some of my last copies of certain files
I'd rather not lose those
for some reason the Bonjour Service issued 28000 errors :S

Homesharing I guess

yeah that wasn't working well either
when my GF tried watching Desperate Housewives the video sometimes would just stop
@Sathya here's a quiz for you
Consider the following SQL table declaration:
   CREATE TABLE Emps (id INT, ssNo INT, name CHAR(20), managerID INT);
We would like to extend the table declaration to enforce that each of id and ssNo is a key (by itself), and each value of managerID must be one of the values that appears in the id attribute of the same table. Which of the following is not a legal addition of SQL standard key and/or foreign-key constraints? Note: The addition does not have to achieve all of the stated goals; it only must result in legal SQL.
Add "UNIQUE" after each of the first two INT's.
Add "PRIMARY KEY" after the first INT, and add "UNIQUE" after the second INT.
What are the rules for adding unique and primary keys to a table declaration

9:17 AM
both are legal

odd, because I tried the other two options and those were legal too

ideally, you put the PK on id & unique on (id, ssNo)

Add ", FOREIGN KEY (managerID) REFERENCES Emps(id)" before the closing parenthesis.
Add "UNIQUE" after each of the first two INT's.
Add "PRIMARY KEY" after the first INT, and add "UNIQUE" after the second INT.
Add "PRIMARY KEY" after the first INT, and add ", FOREIGN KEY (managerID) REFERENCES Emps(id)" before the closing parenthesis.
Oh wait I had Primary Key in another answer, not Foreign key
so is the first one incorrect?

the last one isn't I believe...

> This choice is correct SQL. We have set up a primary key and a foreign key that references it. This change does not satisfy the desire to make ssNo a key as well, but as the question states, we only ask that you identify legal SQL.

9:20 AM
> Add "UNIQUE" after each of the first two INT's.
if id is already a PK this isn't legal.

What would be wrong about it, I have no idea

PK implies unique

well it doesn't say id is a PK
its multiple choice
I think it must be the first one
Your answer	Score	Choice explanation
Add "PRIMARY KEY" after the first INT, and add "REFERENCES Emps(id)" before the closing parenthesis.	0.00	This choice is correct SQL. We have set up a primary key and a foreign key that references it. This change does not satisfy the desire to make ssNo a key as well, but as the question states, we only ask that you identify legal SQL.
woops for unreadable
but this version has "PRIMARY KEY" not "FOREIGN KEY" and that was valid
I reckon this isn't
and that was correct :)

@IvoFlipse which one?

9:37 AM
> Add ", FOREIGN KEY (managerID) REFERENCES Emps(id)" before the closing parenthesis. = illegal

We should keep this open just for fun

Sorry, but no more cool stories
morning @TomWijsman
Oh god no, if I have to replace my motherboard, I'll have to reinstall Windows too :\

9:55 AM
@IvoFlipse HOVER... :)

@TomWijsman I meant I didn't know what to look for

So you didn't check what process caused the spikes?

well the same as in that SU question I linked

Ah, like that...
Do you have HPWA?

hello

12:58 PM
@IvoFlipse: Regarding your conclusion on Google+, unless you are 100% sure you should really double check using WPT.

@TomWijsman WPT?

@IvoFlipse: Windows Performance Toolkit, more specifically xperf. To figure out the actual driver that is causing this problem.

@TomWijsman Obviously I'm not 100% certain

And try to update that driver too.

but the symptoms do match
@TomWijsman which driver?
the motherboard one?

1:01 PM
The one you would pinpoint with xperf.
> After some digging it turns out they are related to the "Hardware Interrupts and DCPs" process. One of the first hits on Google pointed out that this could be related to S-ATA issues haunting the first batch of Sandy Bridge motherboards.

Hardware Interrupts and DPCs is not a process but a part of the kernel consisting of interrupt routines and drivers handling deferred procedure calls. If you throw that name into Google you might get about any problem related to CPU usage and drivers.

It's SATA-related. The Cougar Point problem specifically affects the motherboard's SATA controller, causing onboard SATA ports to degrade over time and possibly reduce performance of hard drives, optical drives, and other SATA-driven devices.

Your revision matches though.

> Please note that failure to replace the flawed motherboard before June 30th, 2011 will be considered as waiver.
this is from the ASRock site

1:07 PM
Still, it's weird that your CPU spikes that much.

It is indeed
So how do I use that WPT?

A: How do I troubleshoot a Windows 7 freeze or slowness?

Tom WijsmanMost system freezes (where you can't use hot-keys like CTRL+ALT+DEL) are caused by hanging drivers, so you will have to either replace the device or update the driver. Troubleshooting can be done: Download the setup from Windows Performance Analysis Tools for your Windows version. Install the s...

I should probably change my answer to match the "slowness" in the title, it doesn't necessarily need to hang... ^^

Btw I disconnected the harddrives, so I'm not really aware of slowdowns right now
also no weird spikes

As long as the spikes are there.

'yet'

1:11 PM
Ah, if it only happens when they are connected then it's probably going to be SATA.

How do you copy paste into CMD

Unless you have an odd virus scanner that loves to scan connected devices...
Right click -> Paste should work.

@TomWijsman I hate myself if its the S-ATA
because I blamed the HDD

You already ditched the HDD?

I tried formatting it, but it at 53% the computer froze
or crashed, which ever you prefer
the problem did get worse when I tried scanning my drives with Adaware and Malwarebytes or Super Antispyware

1:12 PM
I find it weird that my Graphics freeze problem is so suddenly resolved.

I know you shouldn't run multiple AV at the same time, but I guess this extends to anti-spyware too
I installed WPT but it doesn't recognize xperf

Yeah, it's best to pick the most effective one as the others are just mostly scanning what the most effective already checked.
@IvoFlipse: You have to go to the directory of xperf, or add that directory to the PATH environment variable.

which is installed where?

Hmm, seems some detail is missing from my answer. o_O
Should adjust that too later today...
"Program Files (x86)\Windows Performance Toolkit" I think

I thought I checked the boxes for WPT, but I guess I was mistaken
so I'll try to install it again
hmmm nope, in that folder there's no wpt :S
and it can't find xperf either

1:33 PM
gtg @IvoFlipse, have a project meeting, will see you in 1h30m.

thanks for trying to help anyway

2:11 PM
afternoon all

hi @DMA57361 what have you been up to today?

Uni day
but no longer at work, so no office to camp in between classes

you mean studying rather than work?
right :)

well yesterday was last day of work at Uni
I'm a "student" for a few days, then new work again Wed

exciting!

Q: Three free video cards for Valued Community Members(tm)

Jeff AtwoodI've been doing some upgrading, so this means I have some extra PCI Express video cards. They are not too shabby, either. ATI 5780 1GB ATI 5780 1GB ATI 5770 1GB Now, the two 5780 cards are still fairly high end and require two 6-pin power connectors. But the 5770 only requires one 6-pin conne...

5:23 PM
@IvoFlipse: %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Performance Toolkit

5:40 PM
Its not there :S

What map are you looking in? That's definitely not WPT...
That's the Sql server folder by the looks of it, double check your path.

The folder simply doesn't exist
this folder was the one they pointed me to from that link I posted earlier (I believE)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Redist\Windows Performance Toolkit.

Yeah, there's the installer.

huh I have 7.0.a

You have to run the x64 version from there if you have 64-bit, else go for the x86 (32 bit).
I had some mirrored here, dunno what version mine were. They are probably a bit outdated by now but shouldn't really matter...

5:48 PM
I think it just doesn't download it in the installer even when I tell it too
well I have something that should be a WPT
when I run your xperf command it says the file already exists :S
but where

6:10 PM
@IvoFlipse: Are you running it as administrator?

yeah I was
but nevermind, I'm simply going to take my computer to the store and hope they let me rip out the motherboard there
or should I do it at home :P

6:41 PM
Welp. Looks like it's going to be a while before I even think about getting a new HDD for my laptop, prices are getting insane now.

@tombull89 tell me about it
just when my HDD crashes

I was thinking about going from 320>500GB but nooooo not now.
Yesterd I looked how much I paid for this 320, £35 last year. Same disk, same supplier, now over £160. And that's a 320GB 5,400RPM SATA 2.5" disk.

Hello everyone!

Hey @Wil.

6:56 PM
@WilliamHilsum 56 more rep to get to 66,666 rep :P

7:14 PM
@tombull89 ohhh, I took a screen shot when I reached 666 and 6,666 - Can't believe I am here already! ... Mind you, slower in the last week!
however... Looking at Jon Skeet - I feel very small!!!

7:38 PM
@WilliamHilsum No reason. SO's a different site.
It's definitely an achievement to gain that much rep on SU.

8:34 PM
Suppose you are right! Still... His rep on SO is amazing!
... Anyone know if this is real?...
