@slhck Those answers look familiar!

Hi all

7:23 PM
"The SuperUser 100k questions countdown"? Really?
I think our moderators have too much time on their hands... we're at question ID 351315 after all.

@DanielBeck yeah, sorry about that :P Sathya mentioned it jokingly and I was bored earlier... :/

It's actually impressive. For every 2 questions we still have on the site, you guys deleted 5.

the ID's include answers too
both Q and A are "posts"

Ah right there's probably just the flag what kind of post it is and the parent post ID like on Data.SE.

I'm assume so, yes

7:28 PM
I feel cheated. I'm only able to list 5000 questions when searching for is:question :(

isn't that what superuser.com/questions is for?

Now I remember why I don't like Chat.SE. I always feel like a total newbie afterwards.

lol, sorry about that :/

I have honestly never seen that question count before.

but if you don't visit the main question page you wouldn't

7:32 PM
I've been on /questions before.

hmm, don't know then

OK maybe I've seen it but just not noticed it.
There's some pretty aggressive cleanup script for user accounts though.
1762 pages of 36 users are only about 63000, but the newest user is ID 103172
Or is there also some other explanation?

accounts that have zero activity and haven't been seen in a while get auto-wiped
I can't remember the time scale off the top of my head

unregistered below 10 rep and registered below 50 or something like that?

actually, I think it be cookie-based accounts only too

7:44 PM
or rather unregistered below 50 and registered below 10
something like that. they also delete registered users IIRC

Let’s talk about deletion.

Not question deletion, which works this way, for the record. The deletion I want to talk about today is account deletion.

Stack Overflow is a bit unusual in that our accounts are ultra lightweight. We don’t require registration; we allow essentially anonymous posting. We were inspired by Wikipedia in this regard. We wanted to reduce the friction of asking and answering to little more than entering an anonymous comment on a blog. For example, we often don’t even have an email address for our users. And we’re fine with that. I can’t think of very many sites with as loose a definition of account as Stack Overflow. …

might have changed since then of course, but that's the first source I've found

Perfect, thanks.

np. I'd expect that to be the main reason for the missing users; mergers/deletions will play a part, but I'd guess only a relatively small one
urgh, a double usage of a semi-colon in a sentence has to be wrong >.<
We'll pretend the first was a full stop all along

I'm sure nobody saw.

I did.

7:56 PM
oh well, I've never claimed my written (typed?) English is anything above average :)

8:22 PM
@DMA57361 Lolz. Don't mind me. I've had a company function with free booze. One of the rare occasion I actually allow myself to enjoy alcohol.

hehe, fair enough

The problem with that is I have the hangover right away. So right now I am considering turning in for the night.

that's a bit strange... and unfortunate :/

my hangovers are non-deterministic

I've never had a drink - no hangovers for me! :P

8:35 PM
lol, I rarely drink and when I do it's small quantities... can't remember my last hangover

well the thing is, I don't drink that often either, and the last time I managed to get a hangover from two beers.
so maybe that's a sign :P

:/

Haha, yikes.
@slhck Well that can be a good thing

@SimonSheehan Sure, there are more important things

@slhck Think of the perks! You'll never have a hangover, and you won't spend money on such things :P

8:39 PM
haha yeah

So today I went to a college and saw a real radio station setup, and TV news studio...was really cool

nice!
always interesting to see what kind of stuff they use when compared to a semi-professional studio

Yeah! I'm VERY interested in the Television Broadcasting course now.

can you choose which courses to take?

@slhck Not entirely sure.. I'm gonna check it out. sec
Entire curriculum

8:49 PM
that looks really interesting!

Indeed it does! It seems to be mostly hands on too... apparently there are no textbooks at all in the course

ahh that's better anyway

yep! they also offer a "student for a day" thing...so I can try the course for a day before I apply

I wanted to go to a similar college (or whatever that is in your school system), but then I decided to do CS instead :P
oh well

@slhck it's college :P

8:53 PM
ahah, okay, fair enough :)
hmm I always want to ask @DanielBeck something in chat, but he's never around – and when he is, I forgot what the thing was I wanted to ask :P

@slhck Email!

aah, email is always so formal!
whoa there … that's not nice :/

@slhck That was a very interesting night...
@slhck thats not even half of it too..

@SimonSheehan I probably should have been on chat more often

@slhck It was later at night :P This guy was a bad troll.

9:02 PM
Quite obviously, yeah

@slhck He asked some absurd question, flamed everyone who answered it, then raged on Gareth and nhinkle. Also had a 63 revision edit war with Gareth
then Joel came and banned him and stuff.

sixty-three?

Yes. He just kept F5'ing it.

oh dear

Indeed. But now hes banned for a year. Happy days are here again
I've gotta go eat dinner then head back to school.
Thank God for Laptops and free WiFi..

9:06 PM
haha
enjoy your meal
oooh I found the chat logs of said night

thanks :P Talk to you later.

bye!

10:01 PM
I ordered a Nokia Lumia 800 today. Can't wait for it to arrive.

10:26 PM
Quick question for ya'll
I want to build a workstation/server for myself. I want to run Windows 7 as my host OS, then run either FreeNAS or Windows Home Server 2011 in a VM that will start up automatically. I want to RAID 10 4 hard drives, for speed and redundancy
I want to know if 8GB of RAM and an i5-2500 Processor would be fine for running both OS's consistantly, and if I should give the VM direct disk access to make the RAID, or make the RAID in Windows

Apparently my school blocks port 6667 and 6669
I hoped I could bypass it an use SSL but....apparently not.
Although my ZNC's are working...
Better hop off before some random person knocks me off here

@SimonSheehan What are those ports for?
@Luke I's say yes to all questions, as long as you are not doing any ludicrously RAM intensive tasks on the desktop host. However, that is something I would never even consider doing. You are so much better off by getting a second machine to use as a server.

10:59 PM
@paradroid IRC :/

My main reason is that I don't have much physical power in my trailer. It would be my programming machine, the MC recorder (I can't watch Cable TV otherwise on my TV), my RSync Server, my VPN server... And an unofficial Time Machine server for my MBP

@SimonSheehan Why two? I use ZNC as well. You can set it to use any port.

11:19 PM
@Luke You are just looking for trouble... And, if you get a Netgear Readynas or other entry level/embedded one, the electricity usage is quite small

11:34 PM
:( If you insist. Why though?

@paradroid I dont have ZNC for all my networks - 2 are on ZNC, port 31337. The others are SSL on 6669

@SimonSheehan Well, I supose the easy solution wouldbe to run all of your IRC networks through ZNC then. I use port 55555
@SimonSheehan Are you on Freenode?
I'm a op on a channel which you may like
