@Kris an alternative, but if you're seeking help on specific open source software, you're more likely to get in contact with developers or experienced users (who can help you properly) compared to around here
this channel is 30% socialization and clique chit-chat (headphones, our personal dedicated servers, our pets, or in JMG's case, himself...); 30% general help with whatever people come in and ask about; and the remainder, SE-related stuff like meta.SE post discussion, election discussion, Q&A discussion, etc.

ahh what a day.
My granma passed away last night so my parents are in india for ... I donno, 2 weeks?
I'll need to work out what I need so I can keep myself fed. Roomie might be boarded, but its not confirmed eyt
And I'm working today (which is fine. I'm basically getting a day off in exhange for sitting at the office messing around on the internet)

3:09 AM
just had a computer(computerA) restart after a powercut and not start up. I had another computer (computer B) with sublime text editor on it and loads of files open from computer A opened as m:\blah\bleh which linked dto c:\bkup\blah\bleh on compA. Now M wasnn't accessbile since comp A was down. I took the hard drive out of A and plugged it into B's USB. It connected as F. I then used SUBST to make an M drive point to f:\bkup\blah\bleh And held my breath, and sublime saw the files.
so problem solved

<3 sublime for stuff like that ;p
(and its one of the benefits of being tech here, we have licenced copies of it ;p)

any text editor would've been fine for that.. thuogh actually i've had instances where sublime scared me..
I think once I pulled a network cable.. well, the network cable had no clip and it came out.. and sublime showed the file like it was empty
so actually.. notepad is much more reliable for keeping the contents of a file it is showing, in RAM

sublime notepad won't auto save tho

neither will notepad
so no fear there
err..
well in this case that was good, I didn't want it to autosave
the computer with the file was Down
if it had autosaved it'd have realized that the comp was down and i'd have got errors at best
Have you ever had an instance of a text editor autosaving and a file not being available?

hmm. No idea. I tend to use sublime locally ;p

Man, its quiet today. Where's everyone? ;p

6:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek here :D
sup pup? *headpat*

Not much. At work ;p
(and its quiet.)

Bob
6:47 AM
@Ramhound eh... I'll say that when I'm reasonably sure but can't test it to be 100% sure. better to give an answer pointing in the right direction than leave the asker not knowing forever
@JourneymanGeek :( sorry for your loss
@allquixotic shouldn't you be asleep?

@Bob Friday night; I can stay up as late as I want :P

@Bob: Its either its not sunk in yet, or we were sorta expecting it.
I donno.

7:25 AM
boo.

@Sathya Wow.
As a longtime fan of the 10k tools, this is great.

@DragonLord ^ they had CON-50s for $5 ea, so I grabbed a couple extra pens and some converters :P

Hello there
How to cut and mute a video with FFmpeg?
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/30547611/how-to-cut-a-video-and-mute-it-in-one-step-with-ffmpeg

Bob
@user3037960 'lo
@user3037960 SO is probably the wrong site for that question.

in one step.
really? why?

Bob
...read the help pages. Note what is on-topic and off-topic.
> [Questions about general computing hardware and software are off-topic for Stack Overflow unless they directly involve tools used primarily for programming. ](stackoverflow.com/help/on-topic)

Ok thx, I thought someone probably knows the answer.
thx

Bob
3:12 PM
@user3037960 Even if someone knows the answer, asking on a site where it is off-topic is a great way to attract downvotes and get the question closed.
Now, that question probably is on-topic at Super User and Unix & Linux, amongst others. Not Stack Overflow where you asked it.
Also, when you ask about something you've tried and you say "It doesnt work.", tell people why or how it doesn't work. What results do you get, and how do they differ from what you expect?

Bob
wh... wha?

3:29 PM
It's so bad that it causes any meaurement value to underflow and it becomes awesome again.

@bob

Bob
?

@Bob I try. thx

Bob
4:33 PM
@allquixotic Some interesting results here: calomel.org/zfs_raid_speed_capacity.html
@allquixotic I see nothing wrong :P
urk... the 3x SSD option at OVH takes 10 days to provision
hmmm... decisions
600 GB is enough storage space for me. More than enough.
But on the other hand the HDDs are also fast enough
and 10 days is a damn long time to wait :(
Hm. I suppose in the long run I'm more likely to run out of disk space than care about I/O performance.
hmm @JourneymanGeek fastcodesign.com/3046678/…

5:41 PM
@Bob interesting

Bob
@allquixotic I'm starting a test install of a 3x disk RAID-Z with root on ZFS and an extra disk for GRUB
If everything works out in VMware, that'll likely be my final config

Bob
$7/month extra for 3x 2TB HDD

> it's rubbish. 18 char to go. it's rubbish

Bob
$49 one-off for the flash drive for boot

5:43 PM
@Bob nice

Bob
hm... or pay a little extra for a bigger flash drive?

is ping to Canada acceptable for you?

Bob
entirely unecessary though
@allquixotic it's a bit iffy but I can live with it
@allquixotic @Sathya => would be nice if that page could link to all questions closed with a specific reason
would also help find poor custom reasons
@allquixotic IIRC my current one is around 220-230, the BHS DC is something like 280
@allquixotic I'd really like to know what the CPU usage of RAID-Z on 3x SSD would be, but no-one seems to have hard numbers
50% of a single core would be the boundary of acceptable for me (while saturating SATA3)
(that being a single core of the Xeon E5-1620v2 I'll have)
This is the epitome of overkill: unix.stackexchange.com/a/206517/33227
The shell is interpreting a special character? Use Python instead!

3 hours later…
8:34 PM
Oooook, why does my home button no longer return me to the top of facebook (but every other page works correctly)

Bob
8:54 PM
@allquixotic systemd makes me want to smash something
now I know why it's often regarded as a piece of shit

9:21 PM
@Bob ...what? O.o

Bob
@allquixotic oh, not much... just logind using a chrooted & bind-mounted dir, being completely impossible to kill and not showing any active sessions, making the dir impossible to umount, then hanging the entire system...
had to reboot the live env and install/compile zfs for the 500th time

I'm staying as far away from systemd as I can
I just can't see the point in hiding so many things behind something else, binary logs, and all that jaz

@Bob systemctl disable systemd-logind.service?

Bob
@allquixotic dunno, too late for that. also, I think I tried systemctl and it refused to run at all within the chroot env
I threw pretty much everything at loginctl and kill

@Bob in what way are you using chroot and why?

Bob
9:32 PM
(funnily enough, the kills didn't cause any noticeable instability... nope, it was the attempt to switch back from single-user mode that hung it)
@allquixotic installing debian from the live env
pretty much involves mounting the zfs fs, debootstrapping it, chrooting in to install zfs and compile modules...
and now I have a fully installed system as per the guide, but one that won't boot :\
(GRUB installed on its own disk)
I would have expected a GRUB recovery prompt at the very least, but apparently the VMware firmware can't even find the damn thing

GPT?

Bob
MBR
ZFS is in a RAID-Z1 config across three "whole" (GPT) disks
GRUB is on its own little 8 GB disk w/ MBR & ext4

sounds right, but possibly a VMware problem

Bob
wait, no, ext3
@allquixotic possibly.
@allquixotic Odd. Changing boot order worked.
This is moving the boot drive up from the bottom of the HDD list to the top.
Intuitively, this shouldn't have made a difference considering the other drives had nothing bootable on them and VMware should have just gone down the list
next step: resolving weird kernel load errors
joy.

10:27 PM
@Bob I know nothing, but that path looks really wrong

Bob
11:21 PM
@allquixotic I'm on the verge of just giving up.

@Bob If you do, I would fall back to an alternative that's safer, rather than faster. Like RAID-1 with 2 mirrors.

Bob
@allquixotic Yea, I was thinking about that.

I'd recommend XFS for the filesystem, and linux-md for the block layer (software RAID-1).

Bob
It's just annoying that there's no reason this won't work, except the bootloader is stupid

Not ideal, but it'll be stable, safe, and great read perf.

Bob
11:26 PM
the kernel shouldn't care what FS it's running from - if it can handle a data zpool, it can handle a root zpool
it's just the damn bootloader giving me no end of trouble
@allquixotic I'll get some sleep then maybe hit up the ZoL IRC and see if they have any suggestions
if not... well... yea.

@Bob that might help

Bob
don't really feel like learning XFS too though :\

xfs is easy -- there's nothing to "learn"
it behaves just like ext4, except more consistent performance and less corruption

Bob
most likely, I'll keep zfs for data

that works ;p

Bob
11:29 PM
and also keep a backup of root on zfs
hm... actually, that means I can keep the raidz
@allquixotic I wonder if I can remount different root after kernel load
hm
basically chroot
except the kernel itself and init would be loaded from the original root... that's bad
urk, should sleep first
@allquixotic there is the other option: just run ext4 and pray nothing goes wrong :P
probably not the best idea
well, I suppose it's better than btrfs... at least in stability

11:53 PM
but xfs is better than ext4 for stability
and, usually, performance
