just had a computer(computerA) restart after a powercut and not start up. I had another computer (computer B) with sublime text editor on it and loads of files open from computer A opened as m:\blah\bleh which linked dto c:\bkup\blah\bleh on compA. Now M wasnn't accessbile since comp A was down. I took the hard drive out of A and plugged it into B's USB. It connected as F. I then used SUBST to make an M drive point to f:\bkup\blah\bleh And held my breath, and sublime saw the files.

so problem solved

any text editor would've been fine for that.. thuogh actually i've had instances where sublime scared me..

I think once I pulled a network cable.. well, the network cable had no clip and it came out.. and sublime showed the file like it was empty

so actually.. notepad is much more reliable for keeping the contents of a file it is showing, in RAM

sublime notepad won't auto save tho

neither will notepad

so no fear there

well in this case that was good, I didn't want it to autosave

the computer with the file was Down

if it had autosaved it'd have realized that the comp was down and i'd have got errors at best

This is moving the boot drive up from the bottom of the HDD list to the top.

Intuitively, this shouldn't have made a difference considering the other drives had nothing bootable on them and VMware should have just gone down the list

I'd recommend XFS for the filesystem, and linux-md for the block layer (software RAID-1).

It's just annoying that there's no reason this won't work, except the bootloader is stupid

Not ideal, but it'll be stable, safe, and great read perf.

the kernel shouldn't care what FS it's running from - if it can handle a data zpool, it can handle a root zpool

xfs is easy -- there's nothing to "learn"

it behaves just like ext4, except more consistent performance and less corruption
