@slhck: Ah, I think it recalculates the quality score once it's edited. It's now at 100 so I think it means that the low quality is gone... :)

eeeeeehh what the, I just dropped that comment, not Ivo
@TomWijsman perfect!

@slhck: Huh? Did you do something under Ivo his name by accident? If I got your message right?

A: list folders by the number of files recursively

Chris PooleTry this: find . -type d | while read dir; do; echo "$dir" : $(find "$dir" -type f | wc -l); done | sort -k2 -t ':' -n

Since you lot did it... Here is mine!...

Well I added the comment to this answer, then flagged it. Ivo deleted it and it shows the comment being made by him.
haha, awesome @WilliamHilsum

If you are wondering, that is my dog updating his Facebook page - facebook.com/profile.php?id=1641241406

1:06 PM
Space? Space! I can press Space, Space... Space.

@TomWijsman :)

@WilliamHilsum I see evil eyes... :(

Oh man, Non Sequitur. I love that comic.

I love that cartoon

1:08 PM
@TomWijsman Nobody is pressing space, mate!

goes back to lurking

heh @Mana :D

@TomWijsman He has updated it! That was years old
I just love this... put both my dogs on Facebook and...
They are in a relationship!!! ahh... Should get back to work!

I've always been wondering to make a fake Facebook account and then just starting to add random people...
Or perhaps make multiple, and let funny things happen on my profile.

@WilliamHilsum Aren't they too young to use Facebook?

1:12 PM
Not in dog years...

haha, I love how our starred messages don't make any sense without context now :P

1:43 PM
@Tom my friend made a fake account with a fake picture, and added over 400 people who didn't know him. Almost all accepted

This is sick...

Pretty messed up flash mob... I thought they only did dances

Yeah, dutch article I have it from calls it Flash Rob instead.
Obviously, they got the idea from London...
If I were the shop owner, I would seal of the money and lock down the store from the outside...
Easier said than done though.
Probably gets you some smashed windows too...

Wow, chav robbery

anybody experienced in CSS?

1:55 PM
Wouldn't say experienced, but, I may be able to help... What's the issue?

well, I have a page with a JavaScript image viewer, and I would like to create a popup
now this popup is bottom: 0; position: fixed;
but I want it to overlay the image viewer

I think you need adjust/change the z-index or whatever it is called

you probably want to use position absolute (with it's parent set to position relative, but no top/bottom/etc) so you can position it in terms of it's parents location

well it should really be an overlay for the whole page

ah, ok, the grey bar at the bottom?

1:59 PM
yep

yeah, that's probably z-index

z-index didn't work though :/

So, the grey bar should be in front?

yup
using OpenLayers to show the image
so that might be the issue

How does the HTML look like?
Hmm

2:01 PM
well my popup is
  width: 100%;
  height: 240px;
  position:fixed;
  bottom:0;
  left:0;
  background-color:#333;
  color:#eee;
  display: block;

CSS doesn't make sense if we don't know the HTML

<div id="slideUpBar">
  <div id="slideUpBarContent">
    <form>
</form>    </div>
  </div>
so that's all there's to it

right, but what about the image?

well this is really complicated, because it's loaded by this OpenLayers viewer
so it might be a bug with that

@slhck: What is the z-index of the image?

2:04 PM
is that page in a location we can reach?

(Firebug / Developer Tools can help you determine that)

@DMA57361 Wait a sec, I could make it public if my router does what I want!

Because, z-index is supposed to work, I just think the image has a relative high z-index for one or another reason.

@TomWijsman That could very well be, it's a bit complicated to debug though

@slhck: Not really...
If you have Developer Tools or Firebug: Right click the image, click Inspect Element and look at it's z-index in the right panel.

2:06 PM
the thing is, it's not an image
oh but now I see there's a z-index
so should I set mine to over 9000?

@slhck: Yes, you can just click through them and see what the highest would be and go over that.
But the divs are properly named, so I think you can figure out what the image would be.
By the way, clicking/hovering on/over the elements should highlight them on the screen.

I know @TomWijsman :)

<svg> is used to draw things, but I kind of think the shown image is in the Zoomify <div>.

okay seems to work with a really high z-index
thanks all :)

@slhck So, I guess something like 2000 should work.
Because it enumerates 1000 values by it's looks...
I wonder if the Web Developer Toolbar can show the different z-indexes.

2:10 PM
it'd be neat to see a three-dimensional view of a website

sorry had to run off for a second, but clearly you both have it under control :)

Time to write another renderer that allows us to rotate the view. :D

@TomWijsman That would be sooo awesome!

And then two modes: Just z-index or do a +1 for every deeper level element.

for some reason when I think of 3D websites, I remember the "3D navigation" in Jurassic Park: mimg.ugo.com/200903/15412/jurassic-park.jpg

2:13 PM
And implement shadow and light, or it will look weird...
@Gareth That's a computer program that exists, can't remember it the name though...
Used it once, very fun. :D

IRIX 3D
fsn (File System Navigator) pronounced as "fusion" is an experimental application to view a file system in 3D, made by SGI for IRIX systems. Even though it was never developed to a fully functional file manager it gained some fame after it appeared in the movie Jurassic Park in 1993. In a scene in the film, the character Lex, played by Ariana Richards, finds a computer displaying the interface. She exclaims "It's a UNIX system! I know this!" and proceeds to "discover" the security code making the laboratory's doors lock. After the release of the film, some incorrectly perceived the vis...

heh, interesting
by the way, when I'm done with writing this app, I'll probably ask some of you to click through it and test it if that's fine :P

Let's make a space flight simulator where you would have to fly to your file...
Destroying files becomes an easy task. :P
Prepares his SQL injection tests that he doesn't have...

@TomWijsman Aaah, don't! I have not a clue about webapp security!
although I expect my framework to do the basic stuff for me

just create a user called: slhck');DROP TABLE Users;-- - then login :)

2:21 PM
@Gareth Hah, I don't fall for this classic!

Got to love YouTube. Users uploading parts of a theater show I watched back in 2010, of which I thought they would never come online.
Fun thing is, I found something so rare through the new YouTube Music Recommendations... :S

The "new" YouTube music recommendations are very old
It's still trying to get me to watch I'm on a Boat
and Eminem from 2 years ago

lol
assuming they don't geo-block it
(which gets on my nerves)

Yeah, they don't work 100%.

Geo-blocking is brutal :/

2:30 PM
You watched X - Y, would you like to watch X - Y? :P
You listened to song Y from X, here is a recommended artist: X.

My biggest issue is geo-blocking anime, since its all japanese, such an annoyance :/

My logged in YouTube was cached, got to log out and log in to actually get the recommendations yesterday. Weird...

My biggest issue is... I can't get on YouTube!
if I use a VPN I can but it's horribly slow - no point really

@Gareth You are saved from its horrible distractions....however, that is a bit much :/
I could never survive with a block like that

we have www.youku.com and www.tudou.com instead - do they work for you guys? (sometimes bizarrely they block the US from accessing Chinese sites)
sorry, no links: youku.com

2:33 PM
I thought my ISP's throttling methods were bad

It loads

@Gareth Yup, works

lol. its the great fireall of china!

it's interesting because for ages they had pirate stuff on there... all the American TV shows etc

2:33 PM
@Gareth Both works, and are in full Chinese!

but now they want to become "real" companies! IPO, USA funding etc
so they are signing up for tons of copyright deals, going legit

it's a crazy world

Q: How to speed up small parts of a video file to match an audio file?

Tom WijsmanCurrently, I have a video which has been originally made in language X. Now, I have the audio of the same song in language Y and I want to dub the video but there are some slight moments where they run out of sync. These moments can be corrected by changing the speed of the video or audio at cer...

Sorry... Is the CSS issue fixed now?...

2:34 PM
I have been trying for the past ~30 mins to find a website I went to in the past, can't find it in my history or anywhere - annoying :(

@WilliamHilsum Yes it is, thanks for the pointer!

Finally don't have to go through matching different languages anymore for that, still might want to put the clean audio from their CD instead of the bad audio. (Which are both live recorded anyway)

@slhck Did what I say help then? Cool if it did!

@WilliamHilsum In the end, yes, I just had to take a really high value

2:36 PM
(Dutch production of the German Tanz Der Vampire, by Jim Steinman; in case you are wondering. There are also productions in the USA, Dance of the Vampires; but their reproduced broadway version is bad, I believe there will also a be an original version)

@TomWijsman Heh, a good friend of my family used to play in these here in Vienna

Jim Steinman sounds familar for some odd reason...

Related to Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler.
If you know Total Eclipse of the Heart, here's a Dutch version of it:

how much difference can changing your WiFi channel feasibly make to the signal strength? I want to know if it's worth the effort of using something like inSSIDer, or nuking my neighbour's apartments

Meat Loaf classic of which music has been adapted.

2:43 PM
@Gareth: supposedly a fair bit

Anyhow, that's that. Just like how something that has been recorded back then is uploaded after more than a year...

@Gareth I think @TomWijsman will soon tell you that it's absolutely worth it
And I have yet to try it, but it looks promising

I tweaked Clippy a bit ;)
Terrorist Clippy!

@Gareth If you were in the U.S. now, you'd probably have somebody knocking at your door within a couple of minutes

2:46 PM
See the relevant chat history for some information around it.

thanks Tom, I'll take a look

Anyhow, I don't have comparison screenshots.

there's about 30 networks my adapter can see from here though, so some competition :(

But for Gaming purposes it's sure better as there is less interference.
And you don't spent much time on it; look what's free in InSSIDer, change, see again, done.
Ouch...
If you can; get on 5.4 GHz, it's completely free here... :P
I have both for backwards compatibility...

I recently switched back to a wired connection

2:50 PM
yeah, I might pick up such a router at some point. I think the other problem I face is just the way this place is constructed... it gets very weak quickly as you go into other rooms. I've tried everything
I might go back to what I had back in London and get ethernet over power adapters - they were good

Agreed, even with the best reasonable WiFi I tweaked out here; cable is still much better.
Especially when you enable jumbo packets (for local transfers over the network)

@TomWijsman Well, I'm on a Gigabit network, so it's all very fast anyway

Jumbo packets removes overhead a lot, if both computers support it then it looks near local/USB file copying speeds.

I'm mostly copying from/to a QNAP NAS, so I'll have to look if it supports that

Speed tests show 60-70 Mbps on Wireless, 90-100 Mbps on Wired.

2:53 PM
So tempted to rage at my ISP. I open bittorrent by accident, now i'm subjected to 15 minutes of throttling.

There are new routers out with improved N standards where you can get next to the Wired speeds I heard from my dad...
@SimonSheehan Protocol encryption should prevent throttling, if you have that option.

@TomWijsman Hmm, I'll stick with the WRT for a while
and the QNAP supports it, so I'll try to give it a shot. Might break compatibility with my TV though.

@TomWijsman I have it, doesn't stop it, it seems. All P2P content is throttled, even gaming will trigger it

I mean, in the options of your software.

And because of how my ISP is, it keeps throttling everything for up to 15 minutes after P2P stops

2:54 PM
Ah, then indeed blame the ISP.

I can't imagine what would happen if they introduced throttling here - the country's entertainment practically runs on P2P/piracy/streaming

Indeed, they aren't nice.

even though most connections are capped at 4Mbps, people get a lot out of them!

Does Full HD YouTube trigger it, @SimonSheehan?

You can do a surprising lot with that.
@TomWijsman Nope, doesn't seem to.

2:56 PM
@SimonSheehan: And a FTP download?

It might be port related...

Just ran that test from my bedroom.

Mar 8 at 0:19, by TomWij
Local Speed Test
Last Result:
Download Speed: 95681 kbps (11960.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4709 kbps (588.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 9 ms

Very nice :o

2:59 PM
And oh...

that's one of the best connections you can get here

what happen to the speed test thing everyone on SU was doing? then I could show off my embarrassing low result

Don't know who I was talking to about my router, but I solved the random reboot problems.
They were indeed power related, so down-clocking the CPU and the antennas a bit worked.
@DMA57361 Should be between the starred messages somewhere.

yeah that's probably it
woo! I'm no longer 3rd from last :D
I'm now 5th from last :/

this is over my anti-blocking VPN:
seems about right on the DL, UL is definitely not right!

3:02 PM
@Gareth "Faster than 61% of CN." :O

yeah, and even that's going to be skewed a fair bit - not like most internet users in China will have run Speedtest

@SimonSheehan: Noticed only one difference in 9.0a1 so far, the "site has no favicon" icon has changed.
Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) mega
Time: 17:03:07 up 4 days, 19:28, load average: 0.06, 0.11, 0.06
Yay, no more daily reboots...

@TomWijsman It really just jumps up a version number to keep up with the release cycle.

Maybe
I wonder if 9.0a1 would actually include all features, they might work out 8.0a1 into a beta further with new features that get added later to 9.0a1 through a merge.

@TomWijsman There wouldn't be any changes...yet. Since its Nightly builds, we really don't see the feature change quite like normal users do when jumping from 4>5>6, etc
Fx6 wasn't a huge change either
about:permissions, a permissions manager. The user can choose what information can be shared with other sites, e.g. passwords
New tab scrolling feature
Domain highlighting in address bar[43]
Enhanced developer tools

3:07 PM
Found another one:

@TomWijsman You may find "The burning edge" resourceful: squarefree.com/burningedge

@SimonSheehan: Yeah, I know of it but find its bold highlights biased. Or just follow the hg itself...
This chat costs me at least 36 MB of my memory... :(

@TomWijsman But that takes so much effort :P
@TomWijsman 36 MB? And how do you know this chat exactly?

Yeah.
rooms/118

I don't know why I'm finding this so funny: my.telegraph.co.uk/beanbean/beanbean/4054721/…

3:11 PM
And now it's using 21 MB, muhahaha....

there's actually a picture of it. what a bizarre typo

O_o wtf

3:35 PM
@TomWijsman regarding eligibility for bloggers: you are not eligible for the blogging portion of the contest, but are eligible for any other category
we should really remove the citizen patrol badge requirement, since if you have 200 flag weight, then by definition you've raised a flag
@SimonSheehan multiple nominations sound fair to me, but don't go nominating the whole userbase. keep it reasonable ;)

@nhinkle It was me who asked :P
but, yeah, I was thinking three users max or something

:) I've got a nomination or two in mind myself
For now, time to tune Winamp for optimal bass output :D

3:57 PM
boooo

Thats new :o

I don't think so, it's been there since the start I believe

New to me :P

Well I have to admit, I approved quite a few of those
so I guess there's a good reason for the implementation

@SimonSheehan it's been there for a while
nev mind I see @DMA beat be again :\

4:07 PM
Haha

wassup ppl!

Hello

hi @SimonSheehan

Hows it going @Megan?

good .. just browsing for a good lappie at an affordable rate really
will find it eventually :)
what about you? @SimonSheehan
hey @Sathya

4:12 PM
Playing some Mass Effect, waiting for a download to finish

hi @Megan

hi

howzit goin @Sathya

after i take the power off and its turned off it does not start for a long time
i have to wait for 1-2 hours for it to start. is something wrong with my processor
i mean overheating

you should post a question
you will get better replies, here not many will see your chat message

4:20 PM
@lovesh 1-2 hours? Thats insanity.

oops my question didnt post completely

good, @Megan

actually my laptop freezes sometimes when i run lot of programs
and then i take the power off because i cant even shut it down

Then you may need to close programs, you may have run out of RAM / processor power
And we heard you the first time.

there is something wrong with the internet

4:22 PM
:)

i ll try later

You might just be lagging behind

what's ur connection speed?
256 kbps?

@lovesh: Wait...
@lovesh: You should get a computer store to clean the inside of your laptop.

its 2-3 kbps now actually it sucks at this time usually

4:24 PM
Or if you can do it yourself, you could use a compressed air can to blow the dust out of the fans.

Are you on dial up?

It's most likely your processor clocking itself back due to overheating.

@SimonSheehan yes

Oh. that could be your issue then
It may be time to upgrade
Cable is very cheap these days

yea its darn cheap in india
try a cable operator
512 kbps is 400 bucks a month

4:27 PM
@Megan ur in india

@TomWijsman please don't remove possible duplicate stubs unless question is reopened. superuser.com/revisions/324954/4

@TomWijsman u knw when my laptop freezes there is a murmuring sound i can hear continuously

alright, super users, I'm off to bed. have a good one!

Cya later @Gareth

@Sathya hi
can a processor overheat if its not cleaned up?

4:39 PM
yes

Absolutely yes.

heh, reminds me of the only time I tried to build a computer and forgot to attach the CPU cooler properly
almost fried the CPU

Oh my.

@Sathya Ah, okay. Thanks for the reminder...

@lovesh yea

5:06 PM
Google new feature? Just got a bit of a shock whilst searching for a little problem I am having with VS...

@WilliamHilsum Seems they are taking links from Google+

@William what browser is that?

Chrome
With the Bookmark bar turned on
I'll be back in a few hours, bye!

5:22 PM
Cya!

5:43 PM
Doing a stability test; Prime95 x4, FurMark highest, HD Tune error scan to keep everything busy
Running fine for 18 minutes already

Pretty good.

Still wondering why my computer would sometimes freeze in StarCraft II

@TomWijsman Perhaps its a graphics issue?

FurMark is running a stability test on the highest settings for 19 minutes so far.
Hmm, perhaps I should look into FPS limiting StarCraft II a bit...
There must be something there triggering it, dunno.
Nice to see how responsive the computer still is while running all things together. :D

Indeed. I limit my FPS to 59, helps me a lot
Mostly because my GPU is mediocre at best. But I like it!
Very quiet

Niklas RSorry for wasting anybody's time but please have a look if you like these 8 known questions that appeared: "Is this a question?" (Not to be confused by a non-question and then we know? @slhck I honestly don't even understand the first line.

Q: Resolve non-genuine version of windows xp without complete reinstall

LievenI am trying to do the right thing by letting an aquintance use a legitimate version of Windows XP instead of the cracked one he is now using. So far I have tried to use the WGA website to convert this illegal copy to a legal one. Unfortunately, that is no longer possible. All I can do here is ...

sounds interesting

Indeed, an interesting one

I know it's well-indented, but I wish Diogo would make his edits a bit more substantial... :/

Indeed, it's a little bit insubstantial
A lot of it is adding "how to" to the title

6:40 PM
yep, could at least capitalize windows xp while he's at it :P

I just fixed that :P
with a spelling error

whoops overrode that by accident, fixed now

Haha
Just hit 100 edits
400 more to go ;)

go, go!

Gareth did 1000 edits this week :O
Next best was tom with 389.
He's surpassed studiohack

6:45 PM
Yup.. quite a lot going on there..
@SimonSheehan can you do a quick check for me?
