Wil
12:00 AM
Anyone think this is addiction....

drknexus
@Wil I stuck the files up on my webserver and sent you the links.

drknexus
@Wil No it hasn't gotten through the tubes yet for some reason.

Wil
:S
well, got yours - downloading both
which one would you like me to try first?

drknexus
311 is what we actually need.

Wil
...downloading very slow
25 minutes left

drknexus
12:06 AM
Our code base doesn't seem to compile against 322 and I haven't taken the time to figure out why. I'm not a programmer (really), I'm a graduate student in the social sciences who likes computers a fair bit.

drknexus
Yikes. You might have better luck starting off with 322 from SGI the download from them is probably faster.

drknexus
Odd - I never got your emails, even checked my spam filters.

Wil
:S
it is in my sent mail, not the outbox :S you have me worried now!

drknexus
well, in your shoes I'd probably think, "hey look this guy is here looking for help and he can't even find my email - this probably will be an easy problem to crack..."

Wil
I never said it would be easy - but I will try a few things

drknexus
12:18 AM
The University has been doing odd things to our mail server lately, they swapped over to using google without notifying us... so it is possible it is lost in the void that is the current mess of our IT infrastructure.

Wil
this is the sort of thing I do on a daily basis - DRM is such a PITA - never hurts pirates, only hurts the end users.
:12007 lol

drknexus
I stumbled around and saw some pretty extensive stuff on bypassing FlexLM but it was starting to get over my head.

drknexus
Frankly, I'd be fine living with the watermark. The insane part is they've locked it down so hard that I can't even launch their own demo program.

Wil
311 is down...
installing now

drknexus
Great.

Wil
12:23 AM
Need a new computer, so slow :( todo list... new desk, new chair, new computer! lol
ooo, windows 3.11 style installer, lol! maybe this will be harder than I thought!

drknexus
Yeah, OpenGL performer had a long ignoble end-of-life.

drknexus
If I hated myself enough I'd reprogram the whole thing in OpenSceneGraph... but that seems daunting (to say the least). My boss much rather I did real work rather than diddle around programming.

drknexus
(that is, rather I do the work he pays me for rather than the work I happen to be able to almost do)

Wil
12:39 AM
ok... what did you actually try?

drknexus
Compatibility mode to Windows XP.

Wil
did you look at the .bat file? it seems to me it has just been coded badly - it lacks the correct paths so the output is invalid... I am surprised it ever worked on XP or anything without modification

drknexus
My coworker tried adjusting the license file include the TS_OK directive.

drknexus
I was launching it directly from the command line. So long as you rebooted the relevant environmental variables should be set.

drknexus
I'm not sitting at a system where it is working, but it should be calling perfly.exe (or something like that) then specifying the model to run.

Wil
12:42 AM
but it was never calling it - the path in the BAT is invalid

drknexus
It does work fine immediately after installation on a Windows XP machine.

drknexus
Let me go glance at a machine where it is working, hold on.

Wil
if you installed it in the default location, try copying and pasting this:
"c:\Program Files\Silicon Graphics\OpenGL Performer\Bin\perfly.exe" "c:\Program Files\Silicon Graphics\OpenGL Performer\Data\town.perfly"
that is correct, the bat was calling :
"\\Bin\\perfly.exe" "\\Data\\town.perfly"

drknexus
What do you get with ECHO %PFROOT% ?

Wil
which is trying to find a non existent network location... the BAT file is invalid, but I am surprised it worked on XP.
... just restarting the vm quickly

drknexus
12:46 AM
We actually got it to run perfly.exe with town.perfly enough that we could see license errors. So I'm confidant we were evoking the executable correctly.

Wil
ok

drknexus
When you launched it your way, did the town show up on the screen?

drknexus
1:06 AM
?

Wil
no - licence error still! trying to do this but taking its time + my machine is slow at the moment

drknexus
Ah. Just checking to make sure that you were running into the same problems I experienced.

drknexus
Hey your email just arrived. :)

Wil
lol

drknexus
@Wil I have to get going - home life can't wait for work life all of the time. I appreciate you taking a look at the problem. If a solution pops up would you please let me know via email?

Wil
1:19 AM
ok sure, no problem - sorry, feeling tired and the computer is going really slow - my netbook isn't best at virtualising!

drknexus
Laugh - yeah - I hear your pain on that.

drknexus
Take care.

wow, you're virtualizing on a netbook @Wil
Hats off

Wil
slightly more than a standard netbook, but far off a main pc...

specs ?

Wil
1:21 AM
it is some low voltage AMD rubbish, got it as part payment from a client, but for some reason, I am using it as my main PC... Just haven't had a moment free to get my main computer setup!
virtualisation goes ok - runs at almost native speed, just VERY slow when CPU is anywhere above 30%, startup, shutdown or resum etc.
so, almost native speed at low usage... e.g. opening basic programs and browsing internet etc. if full screen, you wouldn't know it was virtual.

:12052 ah

Wil
LOL, just got hit by my own anti hacker setup...

:12056 eh ? Locked out ?

Wil
My FTP server is always getting hit by automated scans for weak usernames/passwords and defaults etc, and I wanted to know what they actually would do if they broke in... so I set up an anonymous account that allows writing etc (no execution and more rules), but also a max speed rule of 10KB/s etc.)...
I needed to send a file urgently and thought I would just use an anonymous account and couldn't figure out why it was taking ages for a 100MB file!

:12059 ah LOL!
atleast you remembered the setup!

Wil
1:28 AM
Most annoying thing - the scans were almost every day for the past few years.. set this up 3 months ago and not had one hit!
lol... thought I broke something... took me a while to see! I remembered the anonymous account, just forgot the restrictions I put on it!

:12062 lol. Murphy always comes up

Wil
lol

1 hour later…
3:00 AM
@Wil you know anything about C?

Wil
programming?

ya

Wil
FYI and to anyone else... I have a life, I do other things! But when at my PC I just quickly alt tab when I hear the beep!
not really... closest is only the basics of c#

:12071 we're all the same @Wil :)

@EVERYONEELSE @Wil is really a spy... that's all there is to say

Wil
3:02 AM
I made a few very basic C++ programs - nothing that complicated
What do you need, but probably better off asking on Stack Overflow
:12073 :)

I actually figured it out lol

Wil
Lol, ok

maybe not.... i keep getting this error:
Bus error (Core dumped)
not sure what I'm doing wrong

ooo segfaults
you using pointers ?

Wil
Linux?

3:05 AM
@Sathya what does that mean
compiling in linux yes
@Sathya yes

your program is accessing something which it's not supposed to do.
probably pointer/variable mismatch

Wil
I will be 0 help with programming on Linux!

(note: I'm not a pro at C)
but you could pastebin the program, lets have a look
has a feeling the program is out of my bounds

alrighty here it goes

@KronoS --> pastebin.com please!

that's odd, can't find anything wrong
can you replace pop with something else ?

ya that don't matter
I'll give that a shot

have a feeling it might..

@Sathya WORKED!!!
Thanks man

I think pop is used for stack operations, not sure

3:11 AM
that's odd... I guess I need to stick to single variable for functions
oh that would make sense

My guess is
return(pop);
is causing problems
might want to ask @ SO just to confirm that's the case
probably return(pop) is causing a null pointer return

ya that makes sense now...

Wil
Giving up on that guys problem :( spent the past few hours doing it... tried all the tools but the licence is tied to the .exe and it can't be upgraded to the latest version

:12115 oh that sucks. So he's tied to Win XP then

Wil
anything more would be illegal/hacking... even if the company doesn't exist any more
possibly - VMware workstation/player should work for higher graphic performance but that's up to him
The file gets read fine, no problems, no permission issues... it is purely that the licence file has a line in it saying no terminal services... Vista and above gets detected as TS even if it isn't running that way (not sure why) so the program doesn't engage
stupid... drm never affects pirates... only legitimate users.

3:21 AM
:12119 Hmm probably to restrict from running on Server OS ?
:12120 true that

Trezoid
I'm guessing then that running it in compatibility mode wouldn't help

Wil
:12123 No
:12121 most likely

Trezoid
ok

Wil
I have tried running a few specialised tools to see what/where the program is doing, but I am not sure the registry key it is doing to detect the TS setting... it reads from many hundreds of keys and I just don't have the time to go through them all :(
... something just made my night!

pretty good special effects for a tv show

Wil
3:31 AM
Can't wait!

haven't even seen season one...

Wil
Where have you been!
ahh, 4:30 AM, been working for hours, time for bed!
goodnight!

'nite

later @Wil

4:01 AM
@Sathya what's a call function in C programming?

:12139 call function ?

ya... "As a part of your solution, write a call function that displays intructions to the program user."
from my homework

write another function to to display instrunctions
and then call that function

got it... sweet thanks

cool. anyhows I'm off to sleep. Laters.

4:06 AM
peace

Drop an @ in the programming room if you need anything

cool will do

will check it tomorrow

Thanks... talk to you tomorrow

8 hours later…

Well this is exciting

danixd
awesome chat design

2:21 PM
I can ping but cannot browse. any ideas?

:12181 domain gets resolved ?

Wil
server down?
for me router / web host are different, you can ping even if web server is down!
actually, you can't, I disabled ping requests!

ping who?
I can ping google.com
I can't http to any website.

2 hours later…
4:51 PM
fine now..was set to proxy server with nothing there.. strange. not sure how that happened suddenly!
