Wow 139 posts while I was gone
:6331 good response today
JNK
we talked about you josh
JNK
obviously...
:6333 LOL, I'll bet -- only bad things, I'm sure :-)
JNK
but it was all through private messages so its not in history
19:08
I toy with the idea that the chats should have PMs :-)
Metropolis
Hey everyone....this is my first time trying chat.superuser......What types of things do people talk about on super user? anything?
:6345 Welcome!
Metropolis
Thanks Josh!
There's a room to talk about everything Mac related:
Metropolis
thought i would see what this is all about
19:11
:6345 Hello Metropolis
JNK
@Metropolis - We talk about the superuser site normally
JNK
but this is new
As you can see, you can "onebox" chat rooms
Metropolis
How "new" is this?
JNK
so whatever YOU talk about is what we talk about currently
JNK
19:11
since chat just started today
JNK
there was a beta/meta before
Metropolis
wow
You can also onebox questions, answers, images, xkcd images, wikipedia pages and youtube videos
Metropolis
crazy i just looked it up today also lol
in Vote to Close on Super User Chat, Sep 16 at 15:13, by Sathya
@KronoS also, any images, youtube videos, Stackexchange questions/answers/profiles will be automagically transformed
19:12
You can talk at people by saying @Metropolis (or whatever their username is -- it will autocomplete)
Metropolis
@josh sweet
Metropolis
im very familiar with stackoverflow
Metropolis
just now started branching out
:6350 You can also reply to individual posts by clocking the reply icon on them. This is such a reply, hover over it and the replied message will darken.
If you want to play around, the place to do that is:
Metropolis
:6368 sweet
19:13
And of course ask us for help/tips/cookies/etc!
@Sathya gives out the cookies...
Metropolis
well there is one thing i was going to see if any of you could answer
Metropolis
are any of you familiar with opera mail?
JNK
you may want to post an actual question on the site
Metropolis
ah
Metropolis
@JNK ok....so what questions can I ask in here? lol
JNK
19:15
I think the chat is more of a meta thing
JNK
and/or discussion
JNK
since we dont post discussions on the actual site
Metropolis
@JNK isnt that why there is meta.superuser
JNK
if you had an open-ended/argumentative/subjective question
JNK
this is the place
19:16
:6374 eh heheh
:6380 I also think this would be a great place for questions that require more interactivity
JNK
i.e. "Whats the best browser?"
like "This isn't working and I don't know why", where a lot of back and forth is necessary
JNK
@Metropolis that is why there is meta SU, but its faster here
Metropolis
ok i have an open ended question
19:16
:6380 I also find asking a question on SOFU first and then posting the link to the question in chat is a helpful way to get a discussion going.
Metropolis
I am a PHP Applications Developer. I have been using FF forever, but I have always taken a look at using Opera. What are your opinions on Opera for web development?
Metropolis
It has a ton of nice featuers
ok that notification sound is ANNOYING
Personally, I can't live without FireBug
:6396 DO NOT WANT!
Metropolis
@josh thats what i always thought also....But if you check out Operas built in dev tools, its almost exactly like firebug
Metropolis
19:19
if not better
:6398 I just un-muted the system volume >.< turns off notification sound
:6399 I should check them out. How's the JS debugger?
Metropolis
Awesome also.....
Metropolis
it feals exactly like FB
:6396 ya any way of gettting rid of the sound?
19:20
:6405 click on the speaker icon
Metropolis
And i know exactly what you mean.....I have always LOVED the JS Debugger in FF
next to all rooms links
oh man I'm blind
Metropolis
The one program I am missing though is LastPass
Metropolis
I love that addon
19:26
@JNK you're a d/b person right
JNK
@Sathya I am
JNK
I'm not a pro yet but I'm pretty good
:6414 which DBMS ?
JNK
@Sathya SQL Server 2008
JNK
we have some bigass databases
19:28
:6416 ah. how big ?
JNK
@Sathya I think the biggest is around 14 TB
:6419 holy crap that huge? what are they for?
JNK
@KronoS We do recovery auditing, so it's financial/pos/very detailed info, sometimes images too, for very very very very large companies
:6419 wow.
JNK
the 14 TB is for a very well known very large international retail company
19:30
that's pretty sick
JNK
i dont work on that account
:6419 what kind of database transactions are done ?
JNK
@Sathya In the development side a ton of updates/inserts (we put in new data monthly), and a lot of new tables are generated for reports, and tons of indexing
JNK
then in production all they do is query
JNK
so we index the hell out of them
JNK
19:32
ive only been here like 3 months
JNK
and my whole concept of scale has changed
JNK
@Sathya how about you and your DBs?
JNK
what rdbms?
I think this might need to be migrated to server fault:

http://superuser.com/questions/189516/kicked-from-windows-2003-server-and-need-to-reboot
:6434 I concur
JNK
19:40
+1
+1 here as well
JNK
voted
(needs to be on own line to get special treatment)
@MarcGravell Thanks
JNK
one more vote!
19:45
:6432 i've been on Oracle
for almost 3 years now.
JNK
Never used it
JNK
heard good things though
I haven't worked on big databases
I'm handling live data now
JNK
its all relative
JNK
til this summer I thought 10 gb was big
JNK
19:47
now i process 50gb flat files
JNK
(text files)
and here in production we have everything
inserts, updates, deletes, queries
JNK
yeah thats harder
JNK
we are basically a data warehouse
we also have interdatabase transfers
JNK
19:48
we have some of that too
JNK
there will be 10-15 DBs per client sometimes
Oracle <-> MS SQL
JNK
oh ouch
JNK
inter RDBMS you mean :)
whatta pain.
:6465 hehe yeah.
JNK
19:49
MSSQL is hard enough on its own
Whoa. I think this is the busiest I've ever seen SU chat.
to make things complicated, Oracle is on 64-bit and MS SQL is 32-bit
JNK
@Chealion don't jinx it
and I ran into this
0
Q: Fetching data from MS SQL Server 2008 to Oracle via ODBC: Getting ORA-28545: error diagnosed by Net8 error

SathyaBackground: I am fetching data from a database on SQL Server 2008 (SQLA ) over to Oracle (ORCLA) . The data is pulled using a database link, via HS ODBC connection. Both the SQL and Oracle databases were 32-bit editions. Now, we moved the Oracle database onto faster 64-bit servers(ORCLB), the 3...

@JNK Oops.
JNK
19:51
bbiab, meeting time
damn @Chealion you jinxed it :P
Ha ha ha.
Oh dear. The iPhone 4 isn't necessarily the best for using for screenshots; apple.stackexchange.com/questions/1613/…
Hey there @Joel!
@Chealion I want that paper! Where did you get that?
20:01
@KronoS It's the first result on a google search for "inurl:.pdf"
:6470 well, you have the advantage of no longer being limited to the people who frequent MSO
@MarcGravell That is true.
:6489 plus the big huge notification is there
although I've already removed it for me thanks to @tomWij
20:17
Hey I'm curious, does anyone here get samples of PC hardware (harddrives, motherboards, memory, video cards, etc) from companies to test? Is that something that I can do by just calling or is it pretty much a who you know type of thing?
:6496 you can't get it by just calling
Hey, I could test my phone's bluetooth/car hookup; dear BMW, please supply 1 car to...
2
:6498 heh
:6498 Have a star :-)
:6497 OK, but how to people like tom's hardware get samples and stuff like that.
20:19
:6501 they get review samples
Wil
Wil
Hi all!
Hello @Wil
Hey @Wil!
:6503 Hey Wil
:6503 hey man!
20:20
:6501 to get the samples, well you gotta have a name :)
Wil
Wil
@Kronos just read your comment above... I get samples...
win some local OC'ing contest
:6509 do let us know how
@Wil Thanks for the help on my pc! How do you get samples?
Wil
Wil
through my company, not a lot, or anything good... but usually just manufacturing samples for testing... and most of the time you have to give them back after
now we're lost, @wil is here
20:22
lol i just accidently downloaded the finnish ie9
Wil
Wil
You just have to join the partner programs that manufacturers offer... nearly all distributors track who buys what and when you buy enough, you start to get a name for yourself then manufacturers start to send you stuff to test
kinda makes things a bit difficult to understand when all you speak is english
:6515 HAHAHA.
At least it didn't change all of Windows
Wil
Wil
I can only guess that big companies have moles in them as the moment I start buying a lot from one company, a rival usually sends a sample out the blue to test!
@Ivo Flipse, what do you mean by that!?
if you're here, you're not answering questions
20:24
@Will and we're all rooting for you... at least me an Ivo
and that's all you need :)
Wil
Wil
LOL! I get a lot of free time at the moment :( bored silly so on Superuser most of the day!
:6526 Chat will solve your excess of free time! :-)
Caht? that a new SU beta app?
duuurrr i can type... really
20:25
anyway, see you lot tomorrow
:6530 A new LOLCAT
:6533 You leaving?
Wil
Wil
@Josh :)
have a good one!
@IvoFlipse Peace!
about to install IE9 on my VM; wish me luck...
hmmm... maybe I should remember to snapshot the VM first
20:27
See this guy gets tons of stuff for free... I'm pretty sure that he didn't start out with a huge name.
:6540 Good luck and SNAPSHOT FIRST!!!
Wil
Wil
@KronoS start making reviews, and they will send you stuff eventually!
Well I'm working on that... I just started up a blog... we'll see how it all works out
JNK
destroy!
:6554 hounds released
Wil
Wil
20:34
How do you add questions!?
:6551 link?
JNK
wil: paste line on newline
JNK
it will read it automagically
JNK
same with answers
JNK
and wikipedia entries
JNK
20:35
and images too i think
Wil
Wil
test
cool
JNK
yeah its a nifty chat client
Wil
Wil
@jnk thanks
yeah... cool
somebody star this for future reference
JNK
also if you type in your passwords, it knows you are @KronoS and changes your gravatar for you
Wil
Wil
20:36
I tried it when it was on stackoverflow, but i couldn't stay long - squigly brackets give me headaches!
now that it is on a topic I like, I think I am going to stay!
another victim.... mwahahahahah
Wil
Wil
Youtube videos? have to test that...
wooo! love this!
note to self... don't insall a windows program when chatting.... The little bill gates mini me anticipates when you are about to hit the enter button and pops up with the "restart now" dialog box...
@Sathya howdoi-tech.blogspot.com This is what you were refering to right?
:6587 FYI Ivo's gone atm
:6587 yep.
20:41
Does the chat recognize blogs?
JNK
it might if you paste the whole url
:6596 nope.
sad day
JNK
@Wil - another cool feature: editing!
JNK
20:42
press up arrow to edit your last typed line
That's sick
I need to create a FAQ on this.
JNK
do it sathya
:6596 we need to limit it to things we can predict in advance; we don't want to have to run a HTTP fetch on every link people post "just in case"
we try to recognise a range of common urls, and we're open to suggestions if you think "x" should be handled
JNK
@MarcGravell - would it be possible to include 4 or 5 common blog domains
JNK
20:44
blogspot, wordpress, etc
possibly - it could certainly be considered
@MarcGravell I think that would be a good thing, since I'm assuming some of us use blogs.
Wil
Wil
@jnk must have a time limit, doesn't let me edit :S
A waffle is a batter- or dough-based cake cooked in a waffle iron patterned to give a distinctive and characteristic shape. There are many variations based on the type and shape of the iron and the recipe used. Other waffle-shaped foods exist, and are sometimes referred to as waffles because of their shape. Most are actually potato products. Waffles are eaten throughout the world, particularly in Belgium and the United States. Common toppings are strawberries, chocolate, sugar, honey, syrups, ice cream and more. Waffles can be desserts and breakfasts. Etymology Wafer and waffle shar...

cool, it let me edit that last one... guess there is just a time limit
2 minutes on edit, unless you have elevated access

@MarcGravell as someone who has been around a lot longer than me... WHAT IS IT WITH THE UICORNS!!!! I don't get it!
just a meme
A meme (, rhyming with "cream") is a postulated unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. (The word is a blend of "gene" and the Greek word μιμητισμός () for "something imitated".) Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate, mutate and respond to selective pressures. The British scientist Richard Dawkins coined the word "meme" in The Selfish Gene (1976) as a concept for discussion of evolutionary principles...

lol, its ok, I get it
just wondered how it started!

as nice as FF4?
Wooow! Rounded corners in IE! What's next? Being able to install a browser without rebooting? Meh, I guess that's asking too much.
I'm not a FF user really... more chrome
20:49
:6641 how stable / compatible with plugins is FF4? been eyeing it up for a while
@KronoS me too actually, i just like the tab spaces idea
@DMA57361 well im running the minefield version, but only adblock is working out of 20-odd extensions (ie. no Firebug)
Welcome back @Diago
:6647 minefield is the cutting edge dev release, IIRC?
@DMA57361 yup, nightlies basically, updates daily
meh, IE9 fail; no background images on SO login page
20:53
@Josh Thanks
Might not be here long
@MarcGravell It died in my VM. Couldn't even get it to launch :(
:6654 Good luck with that ;-)
:6656 I cant keep my eyes open much longer. Just testing that services on my server starts up after some modification.
:6656 FYI. My new toy. Rocks. Flies. and it stops short at making me coffee :(
:6661 LOL. I'm glad you like it :-)
I am very jealous
:6663 A few people are. Doesn't last long.
lol
21:46
lame no one wants to talk anymore...
:6686 LOL. I'm normally more talkative, but trying to get work done and fighting a killer headache
@Josh Ah it's ok, giving me time to actually get some homework done
@Josh Sry bout the headache man
BloodPhilia
Hi all :D
BloodPhilia
This is new!
BloodPhilia
Except no one is here to answer XD
emddudley
21:57
not all the message have timestamps
emddudley
they should
BloodPhilia
I think they're only added to messages that have a big enough time span between them
BloodPhilia
And I agree
emddudley
Seems like you're right... makes it hard to figure out what was said when though
:6689 Thanks :-)
BloodPhilia
21:58
Now this is weird
:6699 Check the full transcript for more detail
BloodPhilia
Why were our posts devided
:6694 I'm here, just preoccupied and not 100% at the moment
BloodPhilia
Oh that's ok
BloodPhilia
Hi Tom
BloodPhilia
22:00
And Mitja
BloodPhilia
Anyway, I'm off to bed, Nite nite everyone
Goodnight. :-)
(Sorry I missed you @BloodPhilia)
@Josh: I'm not leaving, that was meant for BloodPhilia... :-)
:6713 oh HAHA. :-)
I'm slowly loosing rational thought, time to lay down see if I can shake this hurt in my braaaain :-)
bbl :-)
22:10
I gotta ask...is there anything out there that'll block the dumb Like Button crap on Facebook?
Cya... :-)
Made a Windows counterpart room.
Hmm seems I missed @BloodPhilia
Also a Linux counterpart room.
:6717 link to one ?
@Sathya Oh yes please. I hate that stuff...worse than Farmville; you have to block the whole person instead of just an app.
22:20
I meant I didn't quite get you, do you want to disable like on the facebook page or on third party "social graph whatever" page
this discussion should not be here @digitxp
i can't see them :)
:6724 I like the name of the linux room :-) More creative than my mac room <g>
I gotta ask...is there anything out there that'll block the dumb Like Button crap on Facebook?

Q: Blocking facebook's Like button in firefox

QuiarkMany sites today use widgets from facebook such as the Like button, list of friends who are fans of that site and so on. While it may be a nice feature, I perceive it to be a serious privacy intrusion, because facebook most likely stores information about which sites you visit. I also heard that...

Nice @deizel
22:29
:6749 I meant the junk that results in the news feed.
:6751 You can hide posts from there...
Can't find any place to hide likes
Maybe I'm wrong...
I probably should have napped longer lol
:6752 I doubt that's possible
i.e. this
:6752 You have to block the whole person because it's a part of facebook and not an app.
22:33
:6758 Yeah I think I'm mistaken
:6757 ahhh that freaking junk
@Sathya: In the past you could drag categories up and down with sliders, it's sad that they removed that system.
It was like: I like videos! Slide it up. Oh, I dislike pictures... Slide it down.
:6757 Sorry maybe I'm just completely out of it... where do you see those?
:6762 ORLY ? didn't know
:6764 news feed
:6769 As in, home page?
22:39
Oops, it's getting late. That was meant for digitxp. >_<
@Sathya: Yeah...
:6769 I don't have posts like that... I guess my friends just don't like anything, HAHAHA
:6775 AH HA
:6774 lucky you.
ugh
@Sathya: You can filter that, that star is probably an application.
22:42
:6780 Nope.
@Sathya: Try hovering the message, at the right side there is a Remove link, does it say to remove the star there?
Meh... :-(
:6782 ohyeah.
:6775 Their interface confuses me because it changes all the time. Where is that?
its the person that I can hide, not the app.
:6788 that was the old privacy settings
It's gone... :-(
They replaced it by an application and page filter thing at the bottom right of your feed.
22:43
:6790 Explains why I can't find it -- also explains why their interface confuses me so much :-)
Which now shows me a pretty long lists of all quizzes I ignored over the months... (Glad those stopped. >_<)
I haven't used facebook since July, and even then I rarely used it, lol
That extension made me visit Facebook a lot less.
And see more at the same time... :-)
goes to install
The ability to mark a page of messages as read, that is.
First thing I disabled is the ability to mark a single thing as read, pretty useless. xD
But reading through the page and marking everything on that page as read is pretty handy, things only come back if there are new comments...
And you can then still click that you don't want it to become unread if there are new comments.
22:47
ooo
betterfacebook is what @digitxp needs
@josh for your headache stereopsis.com/flux :)
Before that, I ended up using the Top News feed but I was way too much there checking everything.
But now, I can handle the Recent News feed with ease. Read everything instead in less time...
:6807 that looks sweet, thanks :-)
22:49
:6807 I don't know if our graphics team would approve though :-)
You can indeed also move things to separate tabs, I'm doing that automatically for applications...
Haven't fine-tunedit it yet. (Haven't seen the need yet, except for artists.)
@deizel: For some reason, I don't like F.lux although I've tried it twice.
@josh heh, it has a "disable for one hour (for doing color-sensitive work)" button
It just makes my screen more red... :-(
:6818 Did you set it to "house burning down" mode? :-/
22:52
Does it have that? :D
@TomWij yeah i thought it was too red at first, but now i find the opposite.. it blinds me if i turn it off right now
where's @random
I just spotted him closing a Q
@deizel: I could increase the night temperature to have the effect less, might try it again later.
On my previous 1440x900 laptop it did not work fine.
But it might fine on this Full HD with better contrast.
And there's @random
:6822 Was just trying to work out how to move messages from CQB to root access.
No idea at all
22:55
:6829 you should have that access
The place where the permalinks et al are there - it used to be there @random
@Sathya: No, not there.
Room -> Message admin
Select them as explained, click relocate, enter room id.
Yeah, there. :-)
Hmm @TomWij beat me
thanks @random
Cool beans
22:59
Hmm, I should check if Jing uses idle CPU, if not it might be handy to have it running the whole time as starting it up to show a picture makes me a lot slower.
ah, this explains why im being blinded -_-
:6846 use my tool :P
although you don't get annotate option
