another reason I wish everything was on a wired connection

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, this could be it. I'll check it out. Thanks!
@JourneymanGeek What did you mean by that remark about wired connection?

@Sammy: you can't generally wake on lan on wireless?
unless its a card that supports wireless wake on lan

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I think you're right. A few years ago it was virtually impossible and people were only wishing for it. But there has been some progress on Wireless WOL since then. But I have personally never been able to do wireless WOL.
I think the main problem is with the lack of support on wireless network adapters.
But I don't mind. I'm building myself a Gigabit Ethernet network at home. It's so much faster and more reliable than any wireless standard out there.

@tapped-out Your comment is off-topic, READ the on-topic guidelines before using them against on-topic questions. — John 18 mins ago
ugh
there's so much more i could've said to this guy. but, the internet needs a little civility sometimes :)
@John: I have read the on-topic guidelines, and here's what they say: "If you have a question about computer hardware, computer software, or personal and home computer networking, and it is not about... asking for a shopping or product recommendation ... then you’re in the right place to ask your question!" This question is a blatant call for product (software) recommendations. The proper way to ask questions that might require a software recommendation is "how do I do ___". — tapped-out 2 mins ago

@tapped-out: the bigger issue for me is... we don't know what his client system is

hey guys :)
I have a bit of a problem over here.

I downloaded some Linux distros and made some bootable USB's. Now in order to boot from USB I need to get into BIOS and change Boot Priority.

I know how to do this. But for some reason, as soon as BIOS opens after pressing F10, the keyboard just stops working when BIOS is opened which means that I cannot do anything in BIOS. I can't even CTRL+ALT+DEL to shutdown I have to use physical power button instead. How do I get my keyboard to work in BIOS?

does anyone know wordperss here?

@404NotFound: I run a wordpress instance, but you need to be more specific than that

@JourneymanGeek what is diff btwn deactive and uninstall?
@JourneymanGeek what is diff btwn register_deactivation_hook() and register_uninstall_hook() ?

9:33 AM
@404NotFound: uninstall deletes the files. deactivates keeps them but dosen't have the files deleted
with some bugs, you may need to uninstall to get things working normally

@JourneymanGeek Even if plugin is disabled?

yeah, I found that out the hard way

@JourneymanGeek Damn - forgot to test the pen thoroughly. Worked fine for ten mins, then started running dry - had to, uh, troubleshoot mid-exam :S

Can't find information on Socket G 989. Wikipedia has Socket G1 and Socket G2 but not this one however Socket G 989 is mentioned in many places. I just want to know specifications and how is it different from Socket G2 988B.

Bob
@Boris_yo Rule of thumb: if it's a different socket number, it's different.
You pick the socket for the processor, not the processor for the socket (normally).
And that i5-2520M you linked to yesterday needs a 998. If it's PGA. If it's BGA then you're out of luck.

@Bob There's no clear definition of 998, there's either PGA988A or PGA988B which are different due to location of 1 pin.

Bob
Well, it clearly says rPGA998B there.

Package size is rPGA988B and socket is PPGA988. What is difference?
@Bob It's PGA 98%. 2% doubts because I still need to look on motherboard to be sure. Even then, how do I check socket on motherboard I don't know.
For this CPU, Intel does not even detail whether it is A or B. Don't know what they are thinking...

Q: Override speed limit per PC of a public wifi in Windows

VarunAgwI have a public wifi in my hostel but it never provide download speed more 1mbps. I am sure it has a speed limit of 1mbps per P.C because it always give download speed of 1mbps. If I connect two or more PC to same wifi each of them get speed of 1mbps. Is there any way to prevent wifi from restric...

my router's wireless connection is borked after a power outage
I've jerryrigged something for now, but this is going to be painful until I have this sorted out

@ThatHelpVampireGuy What name do you want?

That Brazilian Guy

@ThatHelpVampireGuy I can only edit your SU profile though

@Boris_yo: this isn't something that happens much
and its a VERY old router

3:08 PM

Bob
3:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek You, sir, need a new router :P

@Bob: yeah, I do

Bob
In all honesty, I think the TP-LINK I picked up for like $20 would be better than that :S
(well, it has been over half a decade)

lol
I think a surge blew out the wifi chip

Bob
o.o

we've... adjusted for now, using a second router

Bob
3:24 PM
heh, our old G router makes a high pitched whining noise now
probably a failing cap
I don't think it even works anymore
basically, after a few years, it started whining on power on (particularly bad spate of outages), and took some black magic to make the whining stop

HAMMERTIME!

Bob
then it just broke one day :P
actually, I think it had a lifetime warranty, from when Belkin still did that... not even worth claiming now :P
@JourneymanGeek is it any good? :P

@Bob: no. It works until I can buy a new one
but I want to put it off while I examine options

Bob
ah
I started with the dd-wrt compatibility list :P

right now, the weakest link on my setup is... an ethernet cable with a broken off clip

Bob
3:28 PM
capped my budget at about $100, though - the $200 ones look sweet, but it's just overkill
@JourneymanGeek how much does an eth cable cost?
(recently found a cheapish local cat6 supplier... that took a while!)
chain store cat6? $10/m if you're lucky
most small shops? "cat6e" (yea, that's not real)

probably not much but running cabling between rooms is not an option
this cable is from an older installation

Bob
ah. reterminate it? :P
@JourneymanGeek you have the weirdest setup...

@Bob: double nat, redundant WAPs....

Bob
need connectivity cross-home, two separate power circuits so no powerline adaptor, wifi black spot, and of course no wired cable can be run across...

Bob
3:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek oh, I was running with triple nat for a while :P
back to double now

oh, I had that too, for the tiniest bit

Bob
currently, modem/router with three other routers connected to it, with another AP on one of those routers

Bob
two of them are for guest networks or to partition off parts of the network

lets see...
I don't need a guest network ;p

Bob
3:35 PM
oh, and let's not forget the RPi doing the throttling (actually, that's effectively another router... except it's more just forwarding/throttling)

lol
actualllly....

Bob
@JourneymanGeek unfortunately, dd-wrt's virtual AP/guest network doesn't allow you to set up a separate DHCP server. well, not without dropping to the CLI, and it was easier to just spend $20 than fiddle for hours - I was kinda pressed for time

I could just go for the hostapd option...
I do have a spare atom box

spare atom box + pfsense = win

Bob
ehh... wifi adaptors in general have relatively shitty range as an AP

3:37 PM
@DarthAndroid: I couldn't run other stuff on it tho

Oh, figured spare implied unused

I currently have a laptop running lighttpd/PHP/postgres and ubuntu for my irc bouncer and rss client
I could probably offload it there instead

Bob
@DarthAndroid too bad that doesn't run on the Pi
I'm rather wary about mixing up my networking devices with other things
i.e. I wouldn't run a router or firewall on the same box as anything else
mostly cause that's really the last thing I want to go down :P
hm. @JourneymanGeek any idea how much a cheap atom + mobo would cost?
Ooh, a Celeron for $50
current gen too

o0
my usual store dosen't seem to have any listed

Bob
no, wait, last gen. still...
and $50 for the corresponding mobo
hm. I might actually swap out that old noisy-as-all-hell P4
even a Celeron G1610 is benchmarked 5x higher
@JourneymanGeek well, if a Celeron is $50, an Atom should be even cheaper..?

3:48 PM
ya
I THINK I bought mine for ~120ish
but thats years ago

Bob
eh, that's going on my todo list: swap out the P4 mobo + cpu with a H61 + G1610
then that machine could actually be useful again! :D
...back up to 94 tabs. shit.

4:16 PM
@Bob Get the haswell I just got.. G3220 $70, makes for a heck of an upgrade on the cheap newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116950
Games are screaming on high quality for me now, holy smokes was I CPU bound..

4:33 PM
@JimmyHoffa Already got a gaming machine, and that one is $80 + $70 for the mobo...
That's an extra $50. An extra 50%.
I mean, it's good, yea, but it's not that much better for breathing life back into an old machine (really, case + PSU) for use as a server :P

@Bob Isn't a G1610 a mobo upgrade too?
@Bob If you want a chip upgrade without changing from LGA775, I'll sell you an e7200 2 core 64-bit 2.5ghz Core2Duo for $20
That's what I upgraded my last P4 to (then to my haswell from)

4:51 PM
Windows 8 app development sucks. XAML ticks me off.
It's so freaking confusing.

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute It's just new. Get used to it and it's quite nice.

Yeah, I just can't understand it.

As with any new tech there's a lot to learn, you can't just intuit it without a good bit of practice

In the old desktop apps, you would simply drag and drop controls and add background code. Now, you have to worry about this XAML stuff as well as the background code.

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Yeah but WinForms had it's share of warts, and if you ever worked on any large scale desktop apps in WinForms you learned drag'n'drop wasn't necessarily the best way to touch any of it.
The background code was always there, WinForms just had a ton more of it and largely autogenerated

4:56 PM
Well yes, it does become a headache then. Still better than learning a whole new confusing language though.

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Pfleh, get used to learning new languages. Welcome to the tech industry, you'll be writing something completely different every 5-10 years. Learn to re-learn everything you know at least that often.
at least

Bob
@JimmyHoffa It's a cheaper mobo. $50 CPu and $50 mobo.

@Bob I paid $60 I think for my mobo
The real differentiator in that upgrade is now you have to buy new ram

Bob
@JimmyHoffa Slightly tempting :P

otherwise it's only $20 more than the upgrade you're talking about

Bob
4:58 PM
My main goal is power efficiency and quietness, though.

@Bob This thing is dead silent

Bob
@JimmyHoffa Eh, going rate for the cheapest H81 here is $70.
@JimmyHoffa I'm sure yours is, but the Core2 probably isn't.

@Bob H81? I chose B85 on purpose after looking at the available modern haswell chipsets
@Bob absolutely not haha

@JimmyHoffa You're telling that to a guy who taught himself C++, Java, C#, VB, PHP, HTML, MySQL and other languages ;)

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Then quit ur bitchin about learning :P

Bob
4:59 PM
As far as Haswell Pentium vs Ivy Celeron, the Haswell isn't worth a 50% price increase :P

@JimmyHoffa I think the basics of those languages are way more clear than xaml though.
it's already so fricking congested

Bob
@JimmyHoffa I'm not even sure what a B is, but, agian, this is by no means going to be a primary use machine.
It'll either be a 24/7 server chugging away on long-running but low-resource tasks, or off most of the time.

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute And the next language will be even more confusing. Get used to it. Also the languages you listed are all (other than SQL obviously) near identical. Branch out and learn something that's not exactly like everything else, it'll teach you more than learning the same things over and over

Hi all
Oh, a 54G L. doesn;t everyone has one or two of those ?

Bob
i.e. performance doesn't matter (in the last couple of generations)
@JimmyHoffa Drag'n'drop was good for laying something out in a prototype. When you need to change it, though... oh, the horrors!
@JimmyHoffa And HTML :P

5:02 PM
@Bob Yeah, and as soon as you throw in using 3rd party controls like infragistics or telerik or component one or what have you, forget it

Bob
four out of seven listed languages are C-based
@JimmyHoffa Ah, crap designer support, if any? :P
Also a pain because you couldn't build as client profile if you wanted the designer support.
Not without some hacking around.

Yeah, but all of that and more are the reasons Eff front-end, middle/back-end for life. I've done plenty of full-stack work to know that the front-end is where the PITA lives, back-end is where the fun's at.

6:07 PM
@Hennes 54G L?

Linksys WRT 54G version 4 (but not 5!) or Linksys WRT 54GL (make suring the period where they also made the v5, but with the normal amount of RAM rather than half. (The v5 had half the RAM and a different OS)

6:21 PM
Remember:Winter is here & cows seek heat on car hoods. Please give the cow enough time to get off before you drive. http://t.co/gFy3MRYCIG”

@Hennes that poor poor BMW

Meh. BMW drivers usually do not use directional indicators. So I do not mind if most of them get killed or find crippled cars.
There is a sad corelation over here in NL: The bigger the car, the worse the driver is.

@Hennes I had a BMW and I always used my signals and am generally not a dick.
They are mighty fun to drive, it's really hard not to have one after you've tried it (if you enjoy driving). I miss mine..

We often you "buyer of $brand could not afford to also buy the directional indicators"

That and I bought it after totaling my Mazda on ice and wanting something safer, they are ridiculously solid, I joked with my friend at one point my little 3 series weighed more than his cross-over, then I looked it up and it actually did.

can we ask hardware questions on superuser.com? For example, "Does anyone know if it is bad that a PSU fan is not running but the computer has been working properly for the last few days?"

@ThierryLam Yes, and yes

uhm. SHUT DOWN NOW NOW NOW NOW
Fix or check PSU Fan.

will the pc shut down on its if the fan doesn't run for a while?

@Hennes Hey at least sparks and a plume of black smoke didn't shoot out the back of his PSU. I've seen this happen. More than once. Cheap PSUs were fun years ago..

6:31 PM
own*

@ThierryLam In a way, yes, but not the way you want

SLightly longer version: Yes, for most PSU's that is BAD.
The PSU might overheat. If it is a good one that will cause it to power down. If not it might overheat and damage itself and the rest of the system.
<blink> THis is N O T good</blink>

damn, are there any other ways to check if the fan is broken?

@JimmyHoffa Aye. A good pSU is often worth investing in. And some can work without an active fan. But given the question I will repeat the "power off NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW"

@ThierryLam Turn off, unplug, take out the PSU, then (with a grounding strap) it's ok to open a PSU up a bit and look around, but be very, careful they are the least electrically safe components in the computer

6:34 PM
And people usually know what they have paid a lot extra for an ultra silent PSU without a fan.
As well as the requirements for running such a thing.

A PSU can hold and discharge a good knock to you if you aren't careful depending on the quality of the PSU (which sounds to be low in your case)
So I repeat, do not open one up without a sincere amount of caution.

@ThierryLam If the PSU overheat and has and oberheat protection then the PSU will just shut off. That will power down your motherboard. You will loose any unsaved data and the filesystems will be left in a dirty state.

don't worry, it might be cheaper for me to just buy a new one

There are two thing which I intend to keep when I upgrade my computer: 1) my tower/case. 2) my PSU
Neither was cheap.

@ThierryLam If the fan's dud, sometimes they can be replaced but depends on if they've got detachable/re-attachable connector
Yeah, never buy a cheap PSU. Though to be fair a quality PSU isn't super expensive
components are altogether so much cheaper these days than 5-10 years ago

6:37 PM
Aye.

the psu is about 6 to 7 years, maybe it's time to replace it

The problems with a failing PSU is that it can kill everything else
It is not the right place to get the cheapest item in the shop.

@Hennes Can you fix PSU?

@boris_yo: Depends on what is wrong and what your skill level is.
Replacing a stuck/failed fan is easy enough

@Hennes To change capacitors. Level - 0

6:39 PM
I know enough. That is: I know that I should not try it.
2

I picked up one of these a couple years ago for $85 newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159094

I got a 600W coolermaster silent pro

@Hennes There are 1500W nowadays available?

Things to look for in PSU: multiple 12v rails (more than one often relates to more stability across each one), Active PFC, and 1 120mm fan or 2 other fans

600 Watt is overkill for a heavy CPU, top line GPU and 6 disks

6:41 PM
also high efficiency usually means a cleaner more stable signal

(i920, AMD 5870, 4x 1TB 7200RPM, SSD and 1x15K RPM SAS, 4x case fan)

hit all those bullet points with a well-known brand name and you'll be fine
@Hennes Yeah, I got the 750 just because it was a good price for a good PSU, and at 750 I know I wont need to upgrade it likely ever
It'll probably still be my PSU 5 or 10 years from now

My previous PSU was cheap blew up and killed my Tyan dual socket AMD 2200+ board, the rigisteredECC memory and the graphics :(

@Hennes Yeah I learned my lesson when the $35 I spent at compusa spat fire and smoke out the back years ago. there went a mobo, CPU and a disk
but that was many years ago
I think @ThierryLam has disappeared in a power-off and state of confusion heh

still here, trying to figure out how much power to get in my next psu

6:47 PM
What do you want to power with it. Both now and in the next 5 years?

current one is 450W, not sure if i should get same or 500W

For a plain motherboard + stuff 300 Watt is more than enough.

i might get a new GPU to play games in the future

No need to get more unless you add a dedicated GPU

so not sure how much power a good GPU will need

6:47 PM
ANd those are often limited to 188 Watt (also they fail PCI-e specs)
So 500 Watt should be enough.
Unless you are a big spending with two of the top line GPU's, or overclock a GPU.

nah, i think i will stick with 500W

Or unless you do scientific work (e.g. 3D hostital scans calculations in real time) with several high end GPU's and CUDA
People just advertise/sell overkill PSU's (which is much less bad than to small PSU's)

just playing regular games, that's the most work the pc will make

A sane motherboard +PSU limit is 200 Watt.
A max power GPU is 188 Watt
So 400 Watt + spare reserves 'just in case'
No need to get more than 500

sounds good
have to go back to work now, thanks for your help

7:13 PM
@Hennes Does that include hard and DVD drives, CPU, fans?

Usually, yes.
The biggest CPU I know of uses 140 Watt. That is an extreme case
10 Watt (15 at spinn up) for a drive.
No idea about opticals. Didn't they die out last decade?
With a i7-920 (TPD 133W), X58 motherboard (high end power sucking), AMD 5870, 6 drives, optical, 6x DIMM, 6x fan I use 150 watt at normal use.
(measure at the socket, so really slightly less)

@Hennes they are like the Fenix, they reborn but blue instead of red

Drawn			Delivered
Power	% of 600	PSU eff	to desktop

8:12 PM
@Hennes Could discrete graphics card in laptop fail due to low wattage?
@JourneymanGeek Upload error?

@Boris_yo Not likely. Laptops components tend to be manufacturers selected and tested
http://tweakers.net/nieuws/92524/onderzoekers-youtube-
genereert-meer-dataverkeer-in-europa-dan-http.html # (youtube (flash) generates more Internet traffic than HTML.
Muh?
It is not using iInternet HTML, it is transfered via flash!

8:41 PM
@Hennes Eh?

Oh, when going beyond manufacturers specs?

@Hennes 150W needs for laptop with discrete graphics that also has integrated graphics. This is my case but I used 65W and BIOS always warned me about it until I turned warning off.

Aye. I never had problems running my E6500 or a E6400 (with dedicated graphics) on 65W, though charging the battery was very slow.

8:57 PM
@Hennes You have both E6500 and E6400?
Do you run on default integrated or discrete? Or you run on Optimus?

I have an E6500. It is my old work computer. All 3 IT personal had one.
The normal field technician computer was the E6400 (easier to carry) and the E6410
It just uses the on motherboard Nvidia chip
IIRC there is no GPU in the core2duo CPU
LATITUDE E6500 :
[Intel CORE 2 DUO P8400](http://ark.intel.com/products/35569/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-P8400-3M-Cache-2_26-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB?q=P8400)
BASE OPTIONS : 256MB NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 1
DISPLAY : 15.4IN WIDESCREEN WUXGA (1920X1200)
So indeed just dedicated graphics

9:17 PM
Only 1 video card in all system configuration?

Yup.

Quadro are industrial-level videocards...

No hypertreading, no turbo boost (just speedstep).
5 year old CPU

The price for a Dell 6 cell batt was much higher than a no-name 8 cell batt though
