1 hour later…
19:00
/o/
we're ready to wake up!
right?!?
19:03
right?????
we're gonna wake up????
:)
Our story resumes as Alex and Brune have begun to discuss the similarity - or lack thereof - of their respective problems, sitting in the Cleft Caves in a dream-state of the Unwaking.
Nov 16 at 21:20, by Sciborg
Brune looks away from the stare, trying to ignore the well of terror rising in his chest at the prospect. "I should hope our problems are dissimilar."
"Are either of your problems the kind I can solve with a bullet?"
Jack, who wasn't privvy to Brune's prior confessional, looks on confused
"Likely not." Brune shifts uncomfortably on the cave floor again, looking at his damp chair as if silently impressed it has survived so much damage over the course of the past week. "But then again, I suspect we still haven't the slightest idea the extent of our current problems."
Ripples continue to lap across the lake beside you.
19:11
"Well, since we left you, we have gained Jack and evidence of Krath literally throwing food to monsters. Does this help us?"
@bobble "I've also had the owner of these caves whispering in my ears, trying to talk me over about gifts... I told them where to shove it..."
"Wait, who owns the caves? Not the pit monsters, surely?" Darri has pocketed his gun and started pacing circles around Brune's wheelchair
"I don't know what our plan is now, or why we're here." Brune takes off his spectacles and begins viciously scrubbing water off the lenses with his sleeve. "Frankly, I don't know much of anything anymore. I don't know what we're up against. I don't know how to stop whatever is happening to Alex. I don't know how to stop Krath, or Seapo, or any of them. The only thing I have accomplished today is to finally accept that perhaps I am not a hideous beast after all, which I suppose is something."
@bobble Jack wipes his still hands on his ruined jacket nonchalantly, "Didn't give a name. Kept trying to convince me how lenient it had been. Blasted thing thought we owed it a favour."
"You're a good doctor," Darri agrees absently.
19:18
"Yes, I am," Brune says, firmly - without argument, for the first time. "I'm a damn good doctor." He puts his spectacles back on and massages his forehead with his palm. "But by God, if I only knew the cure for what ails us now."
"Brune, given what we're up against... That's everything. A little perspective never hurt."
The ripples continue across the water, somewhat stronger than before.
(Does Jack notice? I'm not sure he's even facing the right way.)
Up to you.
"Well, if we're stuck here, maybe we can go over all our evidence again. Alex said something about-" Darri recalls how Alex seemed to just get a thing he looked for "-uh, well, I sometimes have a pen and notebook on me...?" Turning his hands to the sky, Darri stage-whispers, "only in my bag, but still." He now tries to find a notebook, so he's definitely too distracted to see ripples.
19:20
Brune's eyes finally are drawn to the ripples. He stares, trying to catch a glimpse of the glow again.
@bobble Make a Luck check.
34 < 35 Luck!!!
hehe
@Sciborg You spot the blue-green of the seaweed floating through the water, but that's it.
@bobble well I guess not sky but ceiling
19:23
@bobble You spot the tip of a pen sticking out of Alex's bag.
"Alex, d'yah have something there?"
"Evidence." Brune massages his temples again, seeming fierce, composed and calm for the first time in a while. "All right. There's plenty to choose from. We know, at least, when the end is coming. We know some of the powers at play. We know some of the people involved - mmf." He shifts again as he starts to slide down a bit. "Could someone kindly move that a bit closer?"
"Move what?"
Brune gestures vaguely in the direction of the chair.
Darri obligingly moves it
@bobble @Ginger?
19:30
"Thank you -" Brune grips the side of the chair for leverage and starts to pull himself slowly back up to a sitting position against the wall. "So, our powers. There were four names scrawled above a door in a dream. The Deep One, The Seer, The Crawler, and The Hunger. We have had, I suspect, extensive interactions with several of them. Those are the major powers we are dealing with. One of them has, if our perceptions are to be believed, spoken directly to Alex and Jack."
@Sciborg "Aye. And one of them attacked me in a dream" Says Jack, mistaking the hunger spawn for the Hunger itself.
The ripples continue to enlarge, lapping at the shore as small waves.
"We know that - hmf -" Brune huffs as he braces an arm against the cave wall, trying to find enough leverage to do a ground-to-chair maneuver. "- that Seapo was speaking of the Deep One, and how we would help it return to the world. Whereas it seems from our dream, at least, that the intent of those at the plant was to summon the Great Eye."
@Sciborg Jack offers an arm for leverage to Brune
"I'm guessing you've had more coherent dreams than this old sailor did."
"I don't think coherent would be the term, necessarily." Brune gratefully clasps Jack's arm and heaves himself back into the chair, with immense relief. He sighs and relaxes at last, even though it's a bit soggy. "Oh, much better."
19:47
I'm back
so sorry yall
He feels around in the pockets to see if he still has the notepad he stole from the hotel earlier with all his scribbles on it - it's probably wet, but still.
@Ginger (👍👍👍)
@Sciborg Make a Luck check :)
9 vs. 60.
Success. It's there, soggy, barely legible, but if you squint you can make out most of it.
19:50
Alex has been sitting next to the candles and listening to Brune speak. Their candle is still in their hands.
@Mithical @Ginger, you have a pen?
do I? :p
There appears to be one in your bag
Brune flips through a few pages of damp scribblings and finds an empty one, and looks expectantly at Darrion to see if he has his own notebook ready.
Alex digs around in their bag and tosses Darrion a pen.
19:53
Darrion presents it to Brune with a flourish. "Now, good doctor, time for the exposition scene."
"If there's one thing I emphatically adore, my dear lad, it is exposition."
Darri flounces into a sitting position and props his chin on his hands expectantly
While the others discuss matters above him, Jack turns towards three lake and, like in many other occasions in his life, stares out over the water
Brune takes the pen and starts sketching. "So. We have determined that on the solstice, the power plant will be commandeered - if it has not been so already - by, at the very least, the Seers. We also know that Antonelli and Bardot have their own plan of action to, as Terrence puts it, destroy the Rivaille utterly."
@AncientSwordRage The waves are now significantly bigger, washing against the shore. The blue-green seaweed caught in the tides submerges and resurfaces.
19:59
"Which involves the explosions in our dream?"
"That was, I believe, the accident that inspired his machinations." Brune draws a tiny plant and begins sketching lines between different objects and people. "The plan of Bardot and Terrence, from what we have gathered, is to cause an explosion that Antonelli believes will annihilate the connection between whatever is beyond the Rivaille and our world. They are also developing some kind of substance made from the seaweed that will prevent dreaming, and have tested it on you already."
@Mithical Jack tries to get the others attention, "Maybe we should move back?"
Brune looks over at Jack's remark and rolls - with some unhappy squeaking of very battered wheels - a bit further away from the water.
Jack keeps a weary eye on the water
(Alex, you going to try to get us to leave?)
20:03
Alex has no clue what's going on :p
"It appears that the Hunger -" Brune's scrawling falters a bit at the mention of it, and he steels himself. "The Hunger dwells, if Krath is to be believed, somewhere on the island of Rivaille or nearby. Or at least, near enough that she was able to access it from... well, wherever we are is hard to say. Whereas we have not learned of the dwelling places of the Crawler, Deep One or the Seer, and so we must presume that they are beyond the Rivaille. That they want escape."
"Which would be bad."
"...why should we move back?"
@Ginger "I'm not liking how those waves look... Not natural. Waves are made by wind, and we're deep underground."
Brune looks up to study the waves warily. "Perhaps we are about to be flooded again..."
20:07
@AncientSwordRage Do I feel any wind?
"No... Not again." Jack looks as though he would try and stop the waves
@Ginger You do not. The waves continue to be stable for the moment.
"Try thinking that you have a seawall in your back pocket," suggests Darri
@bobble "Or better yet, a ship to sail away on"
"Are ships wheelchair-accessible?"
20:08
Brune looks down, contemplating what he has drawn, and idly taps a few of the data points, muttering to himself something about crawling and dreaming and seeing and oceans and music.
@bobble "It depends..."
A wave crashes into the rocks, spraying you with freezing cold water.
Alex sputters and shields the candle from the spray. "Maybe it would be wise to back up, yeah"
Brune hastily looks up from his notes and rolls back as far back from the shore as possible.
@Mithical is there any high ground nearby?
20:14
Another wave crashes down, larger than the previous one.
@AncientSwordRage The ground slopes upward in one direction if you continue to the fork in the tunnels.
"Notes later. I'm relocating us to higher ground" and Jack starts striding towards the upward slope
With a third wave crashing down, a voice seeps through, bubbling through your minds. YOU HAVE LEARNED MUCH.
Brune pales white as a sheet and starts pushing, urgently, to follow. "Jack..."
YOU SHOULD HAVE ACCEPTED MY GIFTS.
20:17
Darri tries to help Brune's chair
Do I recognize this voice?
"WHAT GIFTS...GET STUFFED!" Jack shouts as he retreats
Some of the courage seems to drain out of Brune at the feeling of the voice vibrating in his mind and in his ears. He's never heard a voice like that before. My God...
I SHALL PASS THROUGH SOON. TIME RUNS SHORT FOR YOUR CHOICES. REWARD AND PUNISHMENT SHALL BE METED OUT.
@Ginger It does sound distinctly familiar.
Alex scrambles backwards and down the tunnels, cupping their hands around the candle's flame. "SHUT UP"
20:19
WHEN MY BOUNDS ARE LOOSED, WILL YOU ACCEPT MY GIFTS, OR BECOME YOURSELF GIFTS FOR THE SPAWN?
"I vote door 3: no bounds-loosening"
"THAT'S NOT A GIFT, THAT'S A THREAT"
2
"Haven't I been punished enough?" Brune murmurs under his breath, rolling as swiftly as he can manage alongside Darrion. The powers they are dealing with suddenly seem far less abstract.
YOU TRAVEL THROUGH MY HALLS. I HAVE FORGIVEN YOUR INSOLENCE. EVEN NOW YOU LIE DREAMING AS MY SERVANTS CARRY OUT MY WILL. BUT TIME RUNS SHORT. The waves crash one after the other, the water beginning to flood down the tunnel. MY PATIENCE RUNS SHORT AS WELL.
"IF YOU WANT US TO LEAVE, HAVE US WAKE UP!"
20:26
YOUR FEAR NOURISHES ME AS YOU TRAVEL MY HALLS. YET HOW MUCH BETTER IF YOU WERE TO ACCEPT MY GIFTS, GIVEN POWER AND FREEDOM?
Make a group Occult check, please.
9 > 5 Occult
@Mithical (could Jack make Mythos instead?)
@AncientSwordRage That works
Brune looks askance at Darrion. He can't bring himself to admit that a few weeks ago, in the depths of guilt and shame, if the voice had spoken to him and offered him absolution - had offered him mercy, and freedom - he might have considered the offer.
@Mithical 76 < 18 (fail)
20:28
59 vs. 11 Occult.
56 > 32 occult
All failures. You continue to run through the tunnels, the voice crashing through your ears.
If we really want I can burn some of my tiny quantity of luck
that could be wise :p
You need at least two successes so I'd advise against it
20:32
@Mithical Jack wavers, remembering Seapo. Remembering his dreams... Then he continues on.
ah
Alex presses on, their voice already strained. "I don't think what you're offering us is really power, or freedom"
SOON I SHALL JOIN MY CRAWLING KIN PAST THE RIVAILLE, AND I SHALL REMEMBER THOSE WHO SPURNED OR ACCEPTED MY GIFTS. ONCE AGAIN THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
"I don't trust you pant to follow through with anything you say pant honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this is a recording or something"
Jack listens to Alex while reliving the fight with Seapo and his dreams.
I ALWAYS KEEP MY WORD. YOU OF ALL SHOULD KNOW MY SPAWN YEARN FOR FLESH. YOU HAVE BEEN MOST HELPFUL IN PROVIDING FOR THEM. WILL YOU NOW BECOME SUCH GIFTS YOURSELF?
20:36
Brune's breath catches in his throat at those words. He slows down, too stunned to react. You...
Darri pushes Brune's chair, trying to keep them moving
"yearning for flesh pant is not a great way of endearing yourself to me"
"It was you," Brune breathes. "In Scotland. You ruined my career. My life. It was YOU!" The last word is a pained roar. "You did this to me!"
@Mithical "WE.. pant ... ARE ... pant .... NOT YOUR PLAY THINGS" Jack yells, resolve steeled
The voice sounds cold, wet, and emotionless. WE ALL MUST FEED. YOU WERE A VEHICLE TO FEED MYSELF AND MY SPAWN. I NOW OFFER YOU THE CHOICE OF JOINING ME, EARNING FREEDOM. I SHALL NOT FEED ON YOUR MIND AND MY SPAWN WILL NOT PARTAKE OF YOUR FLESH. YOU SHALL HAVE POWERS BEYOND COMPREHENSION. OTHERWISE...
20:42
Hearing Brune's words fixes Jacks resolve even further, and mixed with the adrenaline he doesn't feel an ounce of fear, as foolish as that may be.
"IF YOU TOUCH THE GOOD DOCTOR AGAIN, I WILL RING YOUR NECK AND THROW YOU AWAY" Jack bellows to the cave in general
"Can you prove that what you offer isn't simply a fabrication?"
Brune's chest rises and falls with furious, half-panicked breaths. His expression is wild with hatred. "My patients - were not your food."
Darri keeps saying nothing, focusing on keeping the group moving fowards (he's at the back pushing Brune, I think)
The voice takes on a darker tone, almost gleeful now. YOU SHALL FALL INTO THE DEPTHS OF INSANITY, MY PRESENCE DRIVING YOUR OWN HUNGER. YOU SHALL HUNGER ENDLESSLY, DRIVEN MAD, UNTIL FINALLY YOU JOIN MY RANKS IN A DIFFERENT FORM, TO BECOME THOSE OF MY SPAWN. YOU SHALL FEED AND TEAR EACH OTHER AS YOUR MIND IS DEVOURED, TRAPPED BEYOND THE RIVAILLE. THIS I PROMISE TO YOU.
Brune, you wake up in the hospital.
Jack, you wake up in the hospital as well.
Darrion, to your surprise, you also find yourself in the hospital, despite having gone to sleep by Kiko.
Alex, you find yourself alone and disoriented in your office.
Darri makes a "murmph" sound and pats himself down for his phone
20:47
You're dressed in a flimsy hospital gown. Your bag is on a table beside you.
Like, standing in my office?
Jack wakes with a start, "NO... I PROMISE YOU I'LL...." Then finding himself back in the hospital, stops himself abruptly
Lying down, having just woken up. Your mouth tastes like dust.
Brune claws awake in a furious, sweating rage, breathing like a mad bull and red in the face. "Fuck you!" he bellows, at nobody in particular.
Alex blinks wearily and rolls over in bed, feeling like they've been drained of energy. They glance at their computers, over against the far wall.
20:48
Both Brune and Jack hear a call along the lines of "He's awake!" at that, as people begin to bustle around.
Darrion calls Kiko immediately
@Ginger They're blinking with hundreds of notifications, endless emails and messages. It's around eight in the morning, a week until the solstice.
Breathing hard and angry, Brune looks frantically around for Krath, Jack, Antonelli, or anybody within shouting range.
Jack looks up for the source of the commotion
@Sciborg A nurse approaches. "How are you feeling, sir?"
20:50
Alex hauls themself out of bed and tries to figure out what on earth happened over the last two hours
@AncientSwordRage "You've been in a coma for a week, sir. How are you feeling?"
Brune exhales a few times, fighting to push down the rage boiling in his chest. "Where is Dr. Krath." He yanks open a seam in the gown to look down at his chest, in search of the incision.
@Mithical "A week... A WEEK? a ... week...?" Jack says cycling through several thoughts and emotions too fast to track them.
swatch@sandstorm:~$ uptime
@bobble "DARRION! You're awake! Oh my god, how are you doing? Are you okay? You just passed out and I couldn't wake you up..."
20:52
"Where is Brune? Darrion... And Alex?"
@Ginger It's been running however long you had it running plus a week :p
"Another weird dream. Longest yet. Krath throwing organs to pit monsters. Big Brother voice yelling about the coming of the Spawn or something."
"Uh, it's been a week?"
"Ugh, god. What... what the hell?"
"The hospital. Gotta call the hospital..." They fumble around for their phone and punch in the number
@Sciborg There's a faint scar, apparently having healed quite well over the past week. "She's not here right now, sir. Are you feeling alright?"
@AncientSwordRage "Dr. Brune is in a different room, as is Mr. Jenny. I'm afraid I don't know who "Alex" might me."
@bobble "Yeah, they said you were in a coma or something. What happened??"
Realisation dawning on Jack, as he tries to get up "And Krath? KRATH!? WHERE IS THAT WOMAN!"
20:55
Brune lets his head fall back hard on the pillow, panting, the mindless rage subsiding. His mind is in shambles, struggling to comprehend the revelations he has just had. "Where is Mr. Rivers? And Mr. Jenny? And, for that matter, my bloody chair?"
@Ginger "St. Archit Hospital, how can I help you?"
"Hi, uh... would you happen to know where Doctor Brune Abernathy is at the moment?"
@AncientSwordRage "She's not here right now, sir. Please stay calm, is everything alright?"
@Mithical "Like I said, another weird dream. Can you come over?" Darri really wants to see Kiko right now, touch her hands and confirm they're here together.
@Mithical "No it's bloody not! She's taken his damn liver!"
20:57
@Sciborg "Mr. Rivers and Mr. Jenny are in different rooms, sir. Your chair is right here, but I don't think it would be the best idea to be out and about immediately upon waking from a coma, sir."
@Ginger "May I ask who is speaking? Are you a relative?"
"A coma?" Brune stares at the nurse, aghast. "How... what day is it?"
"I'm... a friend. If he's there, tell him Alex wants to talk, please?" There's a note of desperation in their voice
@bobble "Give me half an hour, I'll be right over."
@AncientSwordRage "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to remain calm. You've been in a coma, I understand that you may be confused..."
@Mithical "I'm not bloody confused! You are. I need to see him. See he's okay."
Darri collapses back and starts thumbing through his other notifications
21:00
@Sciborg I've lost track of the day of week, but you're given the date of a week before the solstice :p
Brune sags slowly into the pillows, eyes wide, processing the fact that they've lost a whole week of time and that "the Hunger" was not at all what he thought. It was you... it was always you... Now, at last, everything seems to make a sick kind of sense.
@Ginger "Dr. Abernathy has been in a coma for the past few days, he's currently in a room. When he's awake I'm sure someone will pass the message along."
Alex mutters something not at all appropriate for polite conversation. "...thank you for your help."
@AncientSwordRage "Of course, sir. All in due time. You've just woken from a coma, you need to take things slowly."
@Mithical "Fine," Jack says in a way that makes it clear things are not fine. "What day is it?"
21:05
Brune presses his hand over his eyes, struggling to make sense of it all. "If you would be so kind," he murmurs, shakily. "Could you please get me the phone."
@AncientSwordRage "Wednesday, December 14th." One week to the solstice.
(Sorry, was tracking down what day of the week it was...)
@Sciborg "Of course, sir. I have a cellphone if you'd like to make a quick call..."
"If you don't mind." Brune will dial Alex's number, after a moment spent straining his memory for it.
@Mithical (it's a-okay)
(I have to run, assume Darri is just waiting for Kiko)
(yeah this seems like a good time to call, I gotta take care of stuff as well)
21:12
(sounds good i gotta make dinner)
thanks y'all :)
Thanks everyone! Great game!
mith proving once again to be the master of plot twists :p
👀
do we get our hitpoints back after being in a one-week coma?
21:15
@Sciborg the twistiest of twists
Those of you who had suffered Major Wounds may make a 1d3+1 healing check, and everyone can roll for luck recovery and skill improvement.
yaaaaay
i love the mental image of walking by the room of a coma patient and having them suddenly fly awake screaming profanity
Those of you who did not have a Major Wound may recover 1 HP per day that you were out.
Actually, correction: those of you with a Major Wound make a CON check with two bonus dice
(Sorry, just double-checking the rulebook)
second bonus die saved me, 36 vs. 60
regular success, you recover 1d3 HP and I'm giving you another free hit point
21:21
1 HP to 4 HP then
If you have a Major Wound you can only recover HP once a week, so consider the week-long coma a gift ;)
thanks!!!!
no problem, anytime!
22:01
@Sciborg 😁
22:51
I'm also back to full health
