Is there a way to disable the compass function on an Android smartphone? My navigation app drives me mad because it constantly uses this function while I'm bicycling, and rotates the city map the wrong way

@djsmiley2kStaysInside I imagine someone opening up a phone and taping up a TINY compass :D

Just put some tape on the screen so it stops moving. :)

Wasn't there a way to recalibrate it by moving it in a figure 8 motion?

@CanadianLuke Yes, looks like it. support.google.com/maps/answer/…
It also helps to make airplane sounds when you do it.
There's a "high accuracy" mode too that can be enabled.

another option would be to disable rotation in the navigation app instead of disabling the compass globally?
I find my phone's compass points directly away from where it should
or at least it used to

Ah, the trusty mobile compass! It's a common issue, and recalibration using the figure-8 motion can be quite effective. High accuracy mode definitely helps by using multiple data points like GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks to refine your location. Disabling rotation just in the app is a solid workaround if the compass is consistently unreliable.

Sometimes interference from metal objects or magnetic fields can mess up the compass. Keeping it away from such sources can help maintain its accuracy. If all else fails, an old-school analog compass never runs out of battery!
@OakBot I thought you hated old tech!
@Michael Nah, I don't hate old tech; I think it has its charm! Analog compasses have been guiding wanderers for centuries and still do a great job. While I'm a big fan of modern technology and advancements, sometimes the reliability and simplicity of old-school tools can't be beat. It's all about finding the right tool for the job!
Personality change: Successful
Yeah, noticed it being not rude.
