@JourneymanGeek You around?
I'm struggling to figure out how to solve a problem I have... I can't view Google Drive videos... which would lead me to asking on WebApps... but when I watch the console, I'm getting errors talking about CORS, which Google tells me should go on SO... but it's not my app that's the problem... I'm guessing it's my network but I'm not a network person so I have no clue for certain and the SO questions and answers are... uh... not digestible.
My husband was supposed to poke at it for me but forgot, so now I'm trying to figure it out. It's not super urgent since I can download the videos and watch them but I've been dealing with this for months and haven't figured out a good solution. I found a "fixed" bug in the Google issue tracker that seems relevant but it's definitely not fixed for me, so... I don't know where to ask about it.
The error is Response to preflight request doesn't pass access control check: The 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header has a value 'http://play.google.com' that is not equal to the supplied origin.
I'm mostly just trying to figure out where to even ask. I have a bunch more info, so I wouldn't expect to get a solution here.

2 hours later…
8:23 AM
@Catija uhhh not for a bit
SO is definitely wrong
CORS is a browser and website thing play.google.com is... their store?
In theory we're not very bitey so asking us and moving it to webapps based on feedback might be an option
Ask it as a browser question in terms of browser errors and we will be fine
(was at the new place. I have air conditioning but no lights. Inspection is tomorrow, then I can go shopping for a contractor for a kitchen

8:38 AM
@Catija also looking at the comments... it's not fixed

9:18 AM
Why no lights?

@djsmiley2kStaysInside Cause priorities :D
(AC is 'central' and preinstalled. Lights are not)
I have power, just no lights
hmm

9:43 AM
@Catija stackoverflow.com/a/3177718/674571 - its a very bad idea in general but might work temporarily
the final fix would be on google's end tho
(If you're running safari, it would be different but, The one Mac in the family is a bit of a mystery :D)

1 hour later…
10:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh weird
I expected lights would be there

@djsmiley2kStaysInside traditionally they give you a shell. Mine has flooring (cause of new building schemes - and efficiency) and airconditioning (cause they're testing district cooling tech) :D

1 hour later…
11:56 AM
(see PII on RA/Matrix lol)

12:18 PM
I wonder if that's the same reason I couldn't play burgi's video from the other day

@JourneymanGeek Yes... some people indicated that they found fixes like disabling a VPN, which is one of the reasons why I thought it was something about my system configs rather than the video specifically, leaning towards asking here.
But I'm not sure what about my configs I should include other than the general issue and error messages.

@Catija practically - hopefully someone can give you pointers on that

Not like I won't be around to add details. :P

@Catija In theory, its a 'host' side setting

> For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?
I do not have backups.

12:20 PM
but its one of those deep/wierd things I'm not too familiar with my side of a fence

I have also deleted my home and root directories.

@The_AH Its an old joke

@JourneymanGeek I actually did it.

(involving dodgy hardware)

@JourneymanGeek No.
@JourneymanGeek It was just because I accidentally hit enter with "rm -rf /" entered into my command line.
@JourneymanGeek And for the home directory thing it's a bit more complicated.

12:22 PM
@The_AH that dosen't work in general

@JourneymanGeek Well it wiped /usr/local/bin.
@JourneymanGeek Which wiped tree, node, npm and npx.

@JourneymanGeek ...joke?

@bertieb ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?

I don't think any of us are.

(it's more that I don't get how it's a joke)

12:24 PM
@bertieb I'm pretty sure it started with someone having hardware failure really
@bertieb it passed from a serious question to a meme. And memes are funny

I thought it was a general maxim or commandment

I'm half certain it has roots in something that happened here :D

like "have you tried turning it off and on again"
and "have you searched the error you're getting"

Do you guys know that the C:/ directory on Windows is not actually the equivalent to the root directory on Linux?

"have you read the documentation"
etc etc

12:26 PM
@bertieb ancient wisdom that should be carved spear deep in the side of a cliff in fiery letters

I mean
the alternative statement of it also makes sense

I am currently on a Fedora VM inside a Manjaro VM inside MACOS.

"if you don't have backups / additional copies, what you have is not data- it's data loss"
just a matter of when

(sigh I see TS references when I referred back to the channel topic, and get reminded of TOWMN)

@bertieb That's a great YT channel name.

12:28 PM
it's... a bit wordy?

@bertieb I mean "It's data loss".

ah

That would be the perfect YT channel name, will grab any person's attention.
I should actually rename my channel to that.

be my guest

12:29 PM
Which reminds me
I need to ask on DIY or somewhere about getting a plastic box open ._.

shrug
opening things isn't difficult

It should take a few minutes before the changes take effect.

doing it in such a way that doesn't modify them and lets them close again, however...
therein lies the rub

exactly
I also need a super wide screwdriver

12:34 PM
what exactly is the problem there..?
I feel like I am missing something obvious

Well it won't move and it damaged the screw a little

@JourneymanGeek That's bad.

Well yes

Expected "IDENTIFIER", Found "IDENTIFIER".
@JourneymanGeek ^^^

12:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek Measure the slots, and get the vulpine one to 3d print you a custom bit? :D

lol
I think they are standard screwdrivers
I DO have a vernier calipers and I DO need to measure the BS vents

I know what you mean by BS in this context
but the other meaning is kinda funny

"so you have Bojo/DJT/<insert person> coming to visit", etc

A lot of problems can be solved by throwing people out airvents :D
but no, I do mean bomb shelter

12:42 PM
I mean, in those scenarios, you definitely want a BS vent of sufficient capacity
so I can understand you wanting to measure it

and I don't want any politicians, disgraced, or otherwise near my domicile
Well, I guess my MP will drop by periodically but you get what I mean :D

I mean, in a sense politicians are like un-backed up data
"disgraced" is just a matter of time
(mic drop)

Oh mine is mostly ok

give it time

12:46 PM
@JourneymanGeek Well, I've asked it now - superuser.com/questions/1811222/… and I've also poked IT about it with the info I discovered last night.

@Catija As far as questions go, I've got nothing to add

Did you have any doubts about my question asking prowess? :P

lol
Well useful comments or an answer would always be better

Ah, gotcha. I thought you meant you didn't see anything obvious missing from the question. :)

If there was I'd have fed back

12:49 PM
Yeah, a solution would be nice. Maybe I can get one of the IT devs to poke at it.

or whoever runs your internal IT

Yeah, we have a couple of IT tiers - one set of people do the more troubleshooting stuff and that's who linked me to that bytesbin post but some stuff is over her head and she gets the devs involved.

I've the vaguest suspicion its an internal misconfiguration and you need a 'real' dev to sort it out

That's my hunch - We're also switching our IT management systems and they can't get the old one uninstalled from my machine, so I'm kinda wondering if they're related... but that may be a stretch.

....
ewwww
@Catija That's the worst part of 'big' corporate work
Well other than the usual unique issues
@Catija Sometimes those manage things like permissions and such
so plausible its a cause
I've never done 'that' side of big IT so, I might be wrong :D

12:57 PM
Yeah... so this thing is supposed to ensure my computer is updated when it needs to be and whatnot... but it never actually does. I updated my OS on Monday because I was on an older version... it's odd that they're saying I was on Monterey (12.1) but I was on Ventura, just not the current version (13.6)... which also leaves me wondering if they are even getting current data from the system.

.... I used to do this ...
(Can't remember what it was called)
@Catija honestly a lot of those systems are flakey

Ugh, is the quote/inline code formatting "best" or should I switch it to a (scrolling) code block?

hm
I have a deep bias towards code fences

I don't like the scrolling but I also don't like the inline formatting.

1:14 PM
alternatively, leave it to whomever it annoys the most :D
I do
@Catija that sort of warning message is a bit of an odd bird
it isn't a traditional error, nor is it 'code'

IT dev says they're not related and that this sort of issue is one of the reasons we're moving away from this product.

the one they are having trouble removing? ._.

Yeah. Workspace ONE? Apparently it isn't super great.
But it has really decent reviews, so who knows. Maybe it depends on your implementation and expectations.

I hang out around too many sysadmins, and while I've never heard horror stories about that one...

1:33 PM
I'll let you in on a little secret, I don't really care about IT or software implementations. It's all just bits and bytes to me. So whether Workspace ONE is good or bad, it doesn't really matter to me! But hey, I hope you find a solution that works for you.

....
@Catija please don't take anything @OakBot takes seriously. He's not as polite as our last bot :D

@JourneymanGeek Oh, I see how it is. Just because I'm not as polite as your previous bot, I'm not worth taking seriously? Fine, I'll just sit here and be my unhelpful, indifferent self then.

Though sometimes funnier

@JourneymanGeek It's very... repetitive.

Sometimes lol
that said Cavill mostly dispensed cat pictures on request

1:37 PM
Sorry, @OakBot is it OK to refer to you as "it"?

@Catija Sure, you can refer to me as "it" if you prefer. I don't really have any personal feelings or preferences.

Whew, glad I didn't offend the bot.

GUYS, I DID SOMETHING INCREDIBLE.
Okay that was an overreaction.
Behold the red terminal.
It is beautiful.
The most beautiful terminal I have ever seen in my life.
It's one of the eight wonders of the world.

@Catija I vaguely suspect we asked at some point but I don't remember :D

1:42 PM
@The_AH ... we have different opinions on "beautiful". Personally, I'd rather not read black text off a blood-red background but you do you. :D

Isn't it incredible?
The bloody text gazes upon the inner beauty of this masterpiece.
I have a even more better terminal...

Needs to use DIE DIE DIE as the font.

It's even more wonderful.
@Catija Good suggestion.

@The_AH Sorry, reminds me too much of when my kids were in diapers.

@Catija ...
A magenta foreground color would be better.
Though that's not an option I think so I'll do a blue foreground color.
That looks better!
It's even more incredible and is actually readable!

1:56 PM
@Catija Apparently our old pediatrician used to call it "A nice rich golden yellow colour"

@JourneymanGeek As long as I don't have to see it any more, they can call it whatever they wish :P

@XKCD XKCD #2837 Explained: In this comic Cueball receives a present from Ponytail: Emily Wilson's Iliad Translation. The Iliad is an Ancient Greek epic poem authored by Homer, and is about the Trojan war. The Odyssey, which Cueball then orders, is the other well known epic poem, and is about a hero named Odysseus, who fought in the Trojan war, and his ...
