12:00 AM
Been running my router 24/7 over 3 years with no issues

13 hours later…
1:23 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah AliExpress scares me lol
I still don't know wtf I want tbh

@djsmiley2kStaysInside shrug
lol

not sure if I want seperate router etc.
I prob do

Ah, uh

but I need to have a think and plan it out properly...

That's important, but generally for a 'low power' home server its enough
I was running all my stuff off a avaton for years until I got bitten by the chipset bug
and decided to take the leap to a xeon D :D

1:24 PM
atm I have a full x86_64 desktop spare under my desk, runs plex, pi-hole, irssi, not much more than that tho
but it's a v.old server
but I also need storage box, which currently it also acts as.

I suspect a NUC type machine can handle all that with grunt to spare
how much storage?
(cause if you're looking at more than a TB, mini ITX looks better, and that's a different calculation)

atm 3Tb, but needs to be redundant ideally too
yeah

oh
sigh, I have something along those lines on the wishlist :D

Also, the internet feed is miles from anything else, in a place where I can't really 'fit' a server
and unless I figure out running ethernet from there, it's a no go.

1:26 PM
I could pay the £~random amount to ISP to move the internet feed back here

See RA... that's my serverfarm

by small, the netgear nighthawk in there is sitting on peice of cardboard acting as a shelf. And has been for the 5 years we've lived here.

3tb standalone NAS 2 chinese industrial PCS (router, and general linux box) one additional HDD, blue box on top is a 2.5 inch HDD I need for some testing, 4 port switch on top, big white box is a chinese mesh router

my switch is attached to the bottom corner of my desk
:D

Oh uh
That's ONE switch
my apartment is... uh... <profanity> planned...

1:29 PM
but yeah, if I built a 'router' box, that'd be entirely different room to all the real compute
Same, hense why I don't wanna just go buy stuff

so I have one line going across the apartment to the other end, and homeplug to my room

not like I have money to spare.

I have a bit

I have my comm's cabinet, which is where the old chimney in the house is
in there is the ISP modem, my router, and a home plug

Oh god. 2023 place has a comms cabinet but its tiny

1:30 PM
home plug provides internet into here, where I have the switch two desktops, ps4, and my laptops when I'm working on it
Ideally I want ethernet from the comm cabinet, through to here
tho the more I think about it, the more sense it makes just to get the ISP to come and run the box directly in to here instead
and I can provide homeplug to the rest of the house (and do wifi off the back of homeplugs)

..... a few posts down...
some ... mad lad... vertically mounted a 1u switch

oh it's £100 now

Honestly - makes more sense to just pull some cable?

hmmm
they'll drill the holes tho
I don't have a .... 30cm+ masonary drill bit (nor a drill to run one atm)

.... 30cm plus?
I AM ASSUMING you mean 30mm, and are not planning on running ethernet over large water pipe....

1:36 PM
lol not width
depth
possibly cavity walls + plaster == ~30cm depth

that seems really deep

and I need to then source ethernet cabling and trunking too

AH true
Trunking is a PITY ><

That's worst case tbh, it's prob more like 20cm or less
And then there's the destruction I cause doing it too

1:39 PM
vs the ISP coming in from outside the house, down the side of the house, through the exterior wall, into this room.

I live with my dad. I don't even think about the destruction.

Ah, I live with my wife ;)
I've tried to figure out if i can run something outta the loft
but I can't get to 'outside' easily

everything is annoying :D

yup
hence homeplug, and tiny computers in my case
so the torrentbox, router and NAS live near the ONR, and my PC lives here.
(and heh, I need to reconfigure things here before I move out... and probably spend a little on upgrades)
