12:54 AM
@djsmiley2k I've sat on an aeon. It's somewhat pricier... And really good
I can't justify spending a grand on a chair yet though

@djsmiley2k My brother in law has a chair like that...
And they're away on holiday
Maybe I could sneak in, sell the chair and buy a SL Omega

1:21 AM
@djsmiley2k Probably cause its a designer chair, made from the skin of virgins.... oh wait....

2:00 AM
I'm an idiot
So the latest thing I'm considering is my monitor(s) are sending the wrong EDID information, causing my random display side screen corruption
I found an application that will dump edid, only the issue happened on my second, not last screen, and if I turn it off, the mouse gets stuck somewhere.
So I copied the EDID output to notepad, and... didn't save
then was forced to reboot... and the error fixed itself
I have sublime on this!
that's messed up

2:18 AM
That moment you're at the office and someones phone starts ringing with the Kim Possible ring tone...

1 hour later…
3:22 AM
Apparently Logitech have their own Synergy like solution.

@MichaelFrank MS did too for a bit

4:05 AM

uhm
I'm half certain there's a 20 year old bottle of jam in the fridge
Every few years I go "uhm, mom isn't this from when we went to australia when we were 15?"
"Jam dosen't spoil, just leave it in there"
Its out lasted three fridges

@MichaelFrank thanks, I'll do so!
@JourneymanGeek lmao
@MichaelFrank it's so stupid
When will devs realize that the only thing you can do to ensure that an email address is valid is check if there's an "@" and a "." somewhere after it?
And that the only proper validation is through a confirmation email?
C'mon. It's not that hard. I learnt this when I was like 14.

1 hour later…
5:44 AM
I need help choosing
The second one is bigger, but it only has VGA, and I can't tell if it has VESA

6:08 AM
Okay it does have VESA
But VGA only :(

6:20 AM
the 18.5 inch one looks like a better idea
also the first one's a newer model
FWIW

@JourneymanGeek I have an unopened tin of something from the 50s!

@bertieb SO ITS YOUR FAULT.
mumbles something about the empire...

Wrong empire
It's from the USA IIRC

No, the habit of keeping things cause... IDK
(I have a running joke that my culture is the last reminants of victoriana)

Oh right yeah

6:45 AM
It's like the last biscuit

7:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek any reason why, other than that it's a newer model?

@rahuldottech someone@domain (without a "." after the "@") is a valid email-address, though. or rather: a TLD is not mandatory

HDMI is the most flexible modern port
@NumLock uhm. Who would stick a server on a bare tld?

@JourneymanGeek let me introduce you to thunderbolt over USB-C ...

@NumLock not really broadly supported
Also can't plug in say a DVD player over it

7:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek yes, with cherry picking you can make anything look stupid/not supported. i can't plug in my VGA only CRT over HDMI either.
please note that using an adapter holds true for other standards as well
also note you stated "most flexible modern port" which is simply false for HDMI. i think you meant to say "(still) most commonly used port" instead.

Bob
if you really wanna get nitpicky HDMI 2.0 is a thing
but if we're talking flexibility ... USB, for sure
arguably tries to do too much
@JourneymanGeek you have an iodd right?

@Bob pfff, a serial port directly hooked onto the PCI bus? what could possibly go wrong?
</sarcasm>

@Bob yes
It's awesome

7:36 AM
@NumLock it's valid by spec, but it is not usable in the real world outside of very specific testing situations

1 hour later…
8:38 AM
@rahuldottech well, consider this: i just used a webmailer (on my phone, in my browser, from a public URL) to send an email to claire@datacenter that gets delivered to the user in question. nice effect: it doesn't even have to leave the private infrastructure.
even better (but just an optional behavior on some addresses of this "kind") these can get forwarded to - as you would probably call it - "real" email addresses, e.g. when it's a customer alias.
also i actually used "<myname>@office" to register myself on that system back in the days. guess what: i actually received an email in my mbox. mind blown. it's just serving ~250.000 users here and a standard for a lot of big tech corporates, though. so i guess that still qualifies it as a "specific testing situation". sometimes i wish i would live in the real world like you.

morning

1 hour later…
10:04 AM
o/

@JourneymanGeek that wasn't a aeon I don't think?
/me hasn't clicked again

@djsmiley2k oh there was a link for one under that
some pricy chairs are actually good

@bertieb I have 1920's booze?

10:20 AM
@djsmiley2k Ah, nice!

something something not out of date?

I'm pretty sure a friend of the family has some seventeenth-century wine
@djsmiley2k Hah, yeah, probably
I need to check that can and see if it actually has an expiry date
Or if it pre-dates expiry dates
Or the notion of time itself

Pretty sure Mrs grandma has more stuff like this

I can't get Latex to show up in chat. I tried using math.ucla.edu/~robjohn/math/mathjax.html but it doesn't seem to work. What exactly am I supposed to do with the page?

Mathjax isn't supported on chat
its supported on some sites.

10:26 AM
well everyone is typing with it on math stackexchange's chat

You could ask there ._.
its not supported on our site

ok. I asked but not sure they're technical enough to give full explanation i.e. which browsers are supported

I don't think its a browser thing.
If you can see it, you can type it
besides, there's literally two rendering engines left

It seems the way it's supposed to work is by entering the following into the address bar:
javascript:(function(){if(window.MathJax===undefined){var%20script%20=%20document.createElement("script");script.type%20=%20"text/javascript";script.src%20=%20"https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/mathjax/2.7.1/MathJax.js?config=TeX-AMS_HTML";var%20config%20=%20%27MathJax.Hub.Config({%27%20+%20%27extensions:%20["tex2jax.js"],%27%20+%20%27tex2jax:%20{%20inlineMath:%20[["$","$"],["\\\\\\\\\\\\(","\\\\\\\\\\\\)"]],%20displayMath:%20[["$$","$$"],["\\\\[","\\\\]"]],%20processEscapes:%20true%20},%27%20+%20

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO PETROL DRONES.

10:35 AM
It still doesn't work for me. Should it make a difference if a bookmark is used vs typing it directly into the address bar? @JourneymanGeek

randomly putting javascript into your address bar isn't advisable btw

well I'll be damned, somehow using the book mark makes a difference
now I'm curious, why did it work when using the bookmark but not entering the text directly into address bar?

It looks like they're loading the JS with the page... bookmarklet?

why is entering javascript into address bar bad? Just because it could be executing malicious code?

@djsmiley2k that's all we need, flying fire bombs

10:38 AM
indeed
@Burgi Did I not already predict this?

idk, i haven't read the full djsmiley2kus prophecies

:D
oh i did i'm sure
1. terrorists will put bombs on drones
2. terrorists will attack bridges, sewers, water plants, electric pylons, gas pipelines etc
3. hit other infra like bridges, the internet, etc.

@djsmiley2k pfft
all they need to do is vote in a suitable idiot
also, drone hysteria annoys me
some people are idiots and shouldn't be trusted with them
but its basically folks making up stories to put the genie back in the bottle

this storm area 51 thing is going to end up with a lot of dead people

most of the people who signed up won't turn up

10:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek not sure it is, look at the issues with the drones at heathrow

I had someone ask me what I thought about it on stream (the Area 51 thing)
@Burgi Wasn't it Gatwick?

@Burgi a lot of which is bogus

And did the police eventually say "we weren't sure if there was actually a drone there at all" ?

some reports of drones flying higher than military drones

(I might have missed another incident)

10:51 AM
someone did accidentally land one on an aircraft carrier

o/ all

in the meantime all the flights are grounded

Its classic hysteria

@JourneymanGeek To be fair, wasn't that the drone's own "Battery low: Engage panic mode"
return to land dealie
in the classic Kryten sense

well, i don't even know where the area 51 meme came from lol

10:54 AM
i admit that the western media, since 9/11, have given extra oxygen to terrorists and their causes purely by reporting it

i read an article and i got it now :p

my next comment is too political for SE

11:13 AM
Okay so
@MichaelFrank there were no graphics related settings in the BIOS settings
@bertieb I used Windows RDP to install graphics drivers, worked beautifully!

@rahuldottech Ah, nice one!

@JourneymanGeek Now that graphics card is installed, onboard graphics has disappeared. Doesn't show up under Display adapters in Device Manager

Glad it worked out :)

@bertieb :)
Jun 21 at 23:59, by Michael Frank
Yea, it depends on the motherboard I think. I know what some Dell systems will disable the onboard when a dedicated graphics card is installed.
hm...

@rahuldottech what processor is it?
Ok, there's two things

11:22 AM
> i7-4770 @ 3.40 GHz

1) Anything intel older than sandy bridge shares PCIe lanes between the onboard graphics chip and the x16 slot used for video cards
2) There's a specific bios setting you need to turn on
and I donno if that's exposed on a HP system

@JourneymanGeek I saw nothing about graphics in the BIOS, but I'll check again

@JourneymanGeek got it to work!

what did you do?

11:31 AM
There was a setting for "Integrated graphics" that was turned off in advanced bios settings

12:14 PM
Anyone know anything about Denuvo DRM?
Wiki says high CPU usage and lotsa writes
Thinking of getting Prey as a friend strongly recommended it and it's on sale
Don't want to thrash the new SSD too much tho

12:30 PM
Is it better to get 4+4 ram or 4+8?

12:43 PM
more ram is bettererer

Ave
12:53 PM
@bertieb yeah
it's not that bad, it won't really kill your SSD

@Ave Okay, that's useful to know, thanks :)
Been bitten and seen other folks been bitten by DRM nonsense so I am a bit leery

Ave
denuvo is peak nonsense
be aware
in completely unrelated news
successfully got wireguard to work as a 6in4 thing

Peak nonsense?

Ave
No need to not be behind CGNAT, no need to regularly update IP on tunnelbroker! I call that a win.
Also works with netflix.
@bertieb it's fairly secure, and games have been shown to run much better without denuvo

Ah yes
But if the game comes with it, not sure it can be avoided
if not hoisting a certain black and white flag...

1:00 PM
@Ave wait wait
so wireguard connects to what to get the IPv6 address?
@Ave eh, gogo6's setup used to work with those, but they closed down. :/
behind a nat that is

Ave
1:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek it connects to my BGP routing server

ah uhm. Don't you need your own ASN for that?
ah yeah 0_0

2:02 PM
For ram is 4+4+4 better than 4+8?
Because I ordered an 8gb stick but I'm wondering if I should cancel and get two fours instead

2:18 PM
depends
On my old I920 motherboard 4+4+4 would be better since it is triple channel capable
Some for some Xeons (up to quad channel)
for regular consumer motherboard it is more complicated
4 (dual rank) + 8 (dual rank) could be faster than
4 (dual rank)+4 (dual rank) (total 4 ranks) + 4 (dual rank)
But unless you are very time/memory sensitive, just go with whatever is cheapest
Also, for reuseability the 8GiB stick is better. Most boards only have 4 DIMM sockets or fewer

@Hennes he said 4+4 vs 4+8
2 slots, not 3

@djsmiley2k See later message / edot
24 mins ago, by rahuldottech
For ram is 4+4+4 better than 4+8?

2:37 PM
ooooooooooooooooooooo

ppppppppppppppppppppp
Hah
Looks different either way
21p
The smallest of resolutions

2:57 PM
@Hennes I doubt this is capable of triple channel
Also not sure of it counts as a "consumer" PC
It's the sort that gets supplied to universities and organisations with an enterprise license
But I guess I'll stick with 4+8 for now
Thanks

1 hour later…
4:08 PM
My PCI-shield-usb-header-thingy arrived!
\o/

4:44 PM
@rahuldottech Only one triple channel setup that I know of (i7 Nehelam series). ANd that one is dated
Aka fist core-X CPU. Intended for up to 6 core so it needed more bandwith
Later Core 2xxx nehalems just used faster memory. But back then it was PC3-10666
And to place it even a bit more in time. I also installed Xp on my Nehalen next to win7
Any modern thing will be dual channel, unless you get lucky
E.g our medical workstations often have low end Xeons, ECC memory etc and those migh be dual channel capable
Not that I track CPUs to much these days. Anything seems fast enough.

5:19 PM
My first attempt at cable management... I think I did ok rahul.party/files/20190719_224603-6487.jpg

5:50 PM
@bertieb reading french maps is hard
but £2.50!

6:17 PM
@djsmiley2k Le petit croissant de ma chou-fleur, you say
Anyone use sound card / mobo's TOSLINK (optical) connector output much?
Wondering how it fares for positional audio
In the sense that it only presents itself as a 2 channel device
but seems to be capable of positional audio via (eg) Dolby DTS
From a quick google, the title of the top result it
'SPDIF out of the PC is the worst way to connect up digital audio'
Which is not an encouraging start

6:50 PM
I think it's the worst just because it's so fiddly?

7:36 PM
like actually falls out

8:16 PM
Whereas rj45? will hold a PC on the end of that cable

@djsmiley2k Well, any scriptkiddie want. Since all of these are connected to the interwebs with no firewall and with the factory passwords. :)

lol that too
but i meant physical attacks

8:57 PM
I love the semi physical attack where a drone flew past a building and turned on all the (local netowkr only) philips hue lamps

@Hennes Consider the Ryzen 3000 series?

remember folks: Update the firmware on your lamps
I did

They take ECC memory, too.

But if I need grunt I always have my laptop (I9-9900k, delidded, liqued metal cooling)
And for work I do not make those decisions
I just entered the masterdata into SAP

I thought the i9-9900K has a soldered IHS?

8:59 PM
You need to delid it.
And that is not something I want to do personally, but luckily the shop (eurocom) offered it
