@MichaelFrank download classic start, never look back
It's available on ninite.com
Also, you can get rid of that huge cortana search box on your taskbar

1:26 AM
@rahuldottech There's a stock option for that

1:45 AM
Bit of a "shadow IT" question...
Lets say I have bitlocker on a drive on my work PC
Can I just image the whole PC offline, say with clonezilla and expect it to be restorable?
or is there some seekrit sauce?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Maybe.
I mean. If you have the recovery key? Yea, sure.
If you rely on the TPM? Maybe not.
Recovery key is always usable with just the data on the drive.

I can get the recovery key
actually dumped out my user folder before reimaging cause I got stuff there.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Also. dd, definitely. Clonezilla, you'd want it in whole disk image mode, not in partial (ntfsclone etc) though those probably won't even be suggested with an encrypted drive.

yup
eh I figure I'd dump it out monthly or so

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Make 100% sure that recovery key is correct and will work before you do it, otherwise you risk locking yourself out if the TPM flushes its keys...

1:49 AM
@Bob oh I can recover the recovery key offline
managed to do that through the tech support portal
I won't though

Bob
That said if you restore to the same hardware and haven't changed anything in the meantime, TPM might just work
idk
@JourneymanGeek Just to be clear we're talking the bitlocker recovery key, not any password/PIN you enter normally.
(also apparently some systems will clear the TPM when the CMOS battery is removed...)

@Bob yup
cause I used it to recover my data
this time I will just dump it out

2:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek This is something I had to deal with a little while ago... I ended up just taking the safe route and decrypting the drive first.

ah
I didn't have time for that :D

didn't have time?

system blue screened during an update
then failed to boot

oh right

1 hour later…
3:41 AM
@MichaelFrank yeah, I was talking about the stock option. Right click on taskbar and hide cortana
Classic start is a Win7 (or XP, if that's your thing) styled start menu. Works wonderfully.

6:09 AM
Anyone know what "Windows 10 FR" is?

Bob
@Ramhound Sounds French
Context would help.

It's not context
It's likely just a typo for Windows 10 20H1

Bob
@Ramhound Fast Ring
As opposed to Slow Ring and Release Preview

AHH!, thanks!

6:32 AM
Tech support can be frustrating
But tech support in dreams is the worst
I was trying to fix an elderly neighbour's computer which wasn't booting because her domain had expired, and the registrar wanted 230-400ish dollars to renew
To make matter worse she could remember her date of birth to log in to the renewal page ("One, One Thousand"... maybe she was 1019 years old?)
Not only that, but in an unprecedented move, Tottenham were playing Northern Ireland in what seemed to be the FA cup final, which everyone was watching in the room I was trying to do work in
All that being said... good morning

Bob
you have a good dream memory, at least

Yea true
It wasn't a very restful (RESTful?) sleep

7:30 AM
That's some amazin dream

@djsmiley2k-CoW You should have seen the indie game I was playing before I was asked to do tech support!

7:49 AM
:D
I once read a book in a dream
but then, in the dream, realised you can't read during dreams
and watched as the letters in the book started disolving
hmmm
when did I list show my mp3 count for sorted mp3s
I want the command again
Can't find it in mah history :/
@CanadianLuke are you perticularly familular with anacron?
> Warning: "/var/lock/mlocate.daily.lock" already present, not running updatedb.
run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/mlocate exited with return code 1
is what I've got today.
but I have a feeling cron.daily/* is being ran, and also run-parts, is being ran
which would explain ALL THE ISSUES

8:31 AM
/me can't figure it out
I might dump anacron, for cronie or something

9:24 AM
There's always systemd.timer hides

Set a reminder on your phone and run the script manually?
Make it work first, then automate? ;-P

9:57 AM
Is there any article about "The Ultimate Guide How-To Dual Boot Linux distro and Windows"? -- because superuser, ask Ubuntu, Unix & Linux, all of them are filled with dual boot question.

We do not write articles (any more)
;p
also stuff varies a lot

10:19 AM
@bertieb that's the thing. I ran it manually a few times. tis fine.
no errors
tho, no errosr today about the backup either.

@JourneymanGeek @djsmiley2k-CoW thanks very much guys!

np, good luck

@SamDean that was fun ;p

haha I'll come straight to chat if I find any more bizarre cables!

is it THAT?
Might be able to count 8 pins in that picture
@SamDean ^

Yea possibly, someone else found this ebay.com/itm/…

it is 8 pins

That'll be why i recognise it
it's like a predecessor to every phone having micro usb.
Some digicams also used it

1:38 PM
nevermind, browser glitched

After learning how Git whiz Sascha Wolf built his career via Stack Overflow, we sat down with him and his former colleague to talk about how Stack Overflow for Teams was introduced at Grandcentrix. The thing developer Sascha Wolf appreciated most when joining Grandcentrix was the passion of his colleagues to do good work. He fondly remembers many conversations with Stephan Hochhaus, Grandcentrix Vice President, HR and Organizational Development. Wolf says they were both “very interested in communication, how to communicate better, and how we can share knowledge better.” Hochhaus sums …

emm ... that "blog post" seems more like "native advertising"

yes, all she writes are adverts.

squints
Yup, that's an image
I can tell by the pixels

Fingerprint reader still works as before. Didn't have to re-enroll because I'm just using the stock plastic screen protector.
Good screen protectors for the Note10+ are so hard to find...
(historically, I've never really liked screen protectors, but I will use what comes with the phone for as long as it's unreasonably beat up; I will then just use it without one, and hope that Corning has done a good enough job with the glass [Gorilla Glass 6] to resist scratches)
FWIW, Samsung's service network can do same-day screen replacements but I'm not sure I want to deal with the possibility of spending $279 (per official price list) should it need to be replaced. FWIW Gorilla Glass 6 is highly impact-resistant, but not particularly good with scratch resistance.
*not unreasonably beat up (not sure how the heck I missed that)

Anyone have the question which indicates where the registry key that indicates the previous version of an upgrade installation is: superuser.com/questions/1495632/… want to flag it as a duplicate and/or create a minimal answer
