@bwDraco the driver code for the bot is in a really good place right now, so I'm pretty comfortable with integrating new and improved versions of what is essentially the bookmarklet (our fork of Zirak/SO-ChatBot) -- if it's just a matter of updating a URL, I can easily hack that in if the JS Room folks haven't already done it upstream
@djsmiley2k LOL without looking at the answers I immediately thought df is being replaced in the PATH

12:36 AM
So... remove it, or replace it with the above image?
Or another image?
It would still need to be hardcoded because it's not a normal (!!/) command.

1:14 AM
I saw this in our common area
as a hack, its glorious
someone stuck some car speakers inside a cardboard box, and by the looks of it, used it for quite a while

@bwDraco This is okay.jpg

...I've had enough with the laptop's repeatedly disconnecting my Logitech MX Master 2S on Bluetooth and have switched to the (supplied, fortunately) Unifying receiver, which is a lot more reliable. This does take up a USB port; what I'll do is remove it and fall back on Bluetooth when it needs to be used in the field or when I need that port free for something else.
(the mouse has three pairing slots, so switching is hassle-free for the most part)
@MichaelFrank I think this should be reuploaded to Stack Exchange Imgur:
Just a moment while I log into GitHub...
fuu.jpg

sigh
This is going to be a complicated one to fix. The only thing I can do for the time being is completely disable the !!/meme command.
!!/meme fuu

or not use it

Let me see if there's anything in the source that depends on the code in meme.js...
Looks like it's self-contained (all of the relevant code is wrapped in a module.exports = function (bot) code block). Good.

So, fun story. I was at a customer site taking a look at a mini computer that was playing up. Turns out, the last time it failed they called an electrician instead of us and instead of that electrician saying "Sorry, you should contact your IT department" They said "Sure... I can fix this!"
Turns out that fix was to remove the internal power supply, run a 20pin ATX cable through the hole in the IO plate out to a desktop PSU that they then installed into some kind of water proof plastic shell.
!!/wat

1:49 AM
@allquixotic: pull request submitted. The whole !!/meme command (and associated meme.jpg feature) had to be disabled.

Bob
I vote for @JourneymanGeek's solution: just don't use it.
Also, the whole point of source control is to keep a history, so there's really no point in commenting out a whole file when you could delete it.
But even that's not worth the trouble. It does no harm.

To quote an old singaporean proberb... you think, you thought, who confirm? ;p
Ok, I'm feeling remarkably stupid...

Hmm...

my old laptop died. I have a backup of the whole disk and I need to get chrome's passwords and usernames out
.... orrrrr
I could dig up a VGA cable, connect my dad's old laptop up and do proper backups...

Well... domain is registered, just that it points to a server that doesn't exist.
So no, not a possible attack vector as long as that domain remains registered.
But regardless, already submitted the pull request.

Bob
1:57 AM
@bwDraco An "attacker" can: (a) register a domain and invoke the bot to onebox an image, or (b) post an image themselves
You need to read more oldnewthing :P

...that was a close one. Let's not take this too seriously.

Bob
Oh, I'm not saying don't report vulns. Just gotta think of what steps are needed to exploit them ... and whether there's a simpler way.
Security is contextual.
Domain reuse is a valid attack in many cases.
But we don't actually trust the domain in any significant way here.

("no need for ;p" and similar is bad because it means I'm taking things too seriously; in a real incident, this can result in unnecessary escalation)

Bob
That said, if you really want to remove it, go for it. I'd just suggest deleting the file entirely in the PR rather than commenting out a whole file. History will always be there.

@Bob Good point. Since all the bot does is post the image URL, any attacks are limited to whatever image might be there.
@Bob Just a moment...

2:04 AM
hm, odd

...done. The pull request now deletes the whole file.

Bob
@bwDraco Also, unless it's truly pressing, it's better if you submit things directly to upstream.
Because it's easier to keep in sync if the fork doesn't diverge too much.
idk how active upstream in this case is, though.

@Bob Upstream codebase has changed in fundamental ways. I've looked at it and it's merged all these command plugin files into one master.js file.

Bob
@bwDraco Erm. master.js has always been there.
That's the built version.
plugins are also still there

Ah, okay.

Bob
2:08 AM
We also have a master.js

I don't see such a file in allq's fork.

Bob
Protip: most programmers don't like working directly on 8533-line files.
@bwDraco We probably deleted+ignored it.
Usually not much point committing built versions, and it's annoying (every rebuild makes the git state dirty again)

I suppose it's just a matter of rebuilding it for actual use once the PR is merged...

> There is vulnerability in Windows Explorer. If a user has administrator privileges, she can put any file into the XYZ application directory.

lol

2:13 AM
LMAO

Bob
@rahuldottech They get a looooooooooooooot of reports like that
I'm kinda impressed legit reports even make it through sometimes

It can be easy to miss the obvious stuff :P

> You’re kidding, but the execution model of running any arbitrary programs with full privileges of the user is a serious weakness of Windows, which continues to cause grief to many users. Even UAC is little help.
> I’m not talking about admin privileges. Every user process has full access to all files and registry. UWP was a step to the right direction, but it’s too little, too late.

Operating system should be out of bounds even for the “administrator”. Applications should not be able to install arbitrary programs as services, even when they run as administrators. Service binaries should be required to bear MS signature, like kernel drivers are.
Uh
Remember how well RT worked out?
Ok gtg graduating in half an hour see ya l8rZ

@rahuldottech sounds like a mobile dev ;p
Ok. That's fun.
I have 2 laptops. Tested 2 PSUs different power sockets...
both died. On the same day
I don't think there's anything else to test T T

2:27 AM
Ow.
Your personal laptops?

Old obsolete ones

Ah.

Guess who has no opposable thumbs and did a full disk image on the laptop that matters?
Woof.
so basically I have full, mountable data backups
but I can't pop in and check what's on the running system

2:52 AM
Why would anyone need 16GB on an RX570? Oh right, "blockchain" https://twitter.com/anandtech/status/1088181073459204097

@bwDraco panacea for security becomes reason for upgrade decision, nice.
@rahuldottech same here. I have till the 28th. In between, I wanted to travel up and down the world.
@rahuldottech oh, you're out of 12th!! That's awesome.
Now you can go to college and be a rockstar.

7:08 AM
I want to clear bash history after every logout. Should I use rm ~/.bash_history in .bash_logout file? Or is there a better way?

Bob
@Biswapriyo Why not just tell it to not save in the first place?

7:34 AM
@Bob please explain.

if you need any more help than that, ask a question on the main site.

8:50 AM
@djsmiley2k Understand it. Thanks. BTW, anyone use APT? update it

9:12 AM
Oh boy the roads and pavements are glassy today

@rahuldottech you need to rock out to alice cooper

@bertieb aye
it's lightly drizzling here, which is melting some of it
however the car's still saying -1C after half an hour or so, so that's reasonibly right
This warm bit is weird, if you look at the forcast tho
Minimum 4C today? yeah right
at 4C there shouldn't be a inch of snow/ice on my car

@djsmiley2k High here today of 4°, but it's going up to 8 tomorrow morning?

after Sunday we're looking at 2 weeks worth of ice/snow weather too

A bit weird

9:25 AM
yup

wat
pls no
just no no no

it's a warm front in front of a huge cold stuff it looks like
From a low of 4 today, to a high of 4 in 2 days time?!
pasting image in riot

all the snow has melted in the fog

I don't like snow
Or freezing conditions

oh and the road outside my house is still frozen solid, because it gets no sunshine.

9:28 AM
Can we get it either every year or never please?

@bertieb lol yeah, more consistant would be good, even if it's going to be 3foot every year.

This "yeah, for a couple of years you'll freeze your ass off but then for the next five it won't get near zero"
Aye

we could at least then deal with it.

Yup

buy snow chains, etc
suddenly makes sense

9:29 AM
@bertieb dude you're scottish...

@Burgi Aye?
Glasgow is pretty mild

o'ah

being cold and frozen is your national sport

Mind a few years ago, when the whole UK got blanketed in snow (cue satellite photos showing that) ?
We were grand, roads were clear, business as normal
I think we must be the focal point for the gulf stream
Way up in parts of the highlands - Cairngorms, I'm looking at you - they get snow pretty regular
And the East Coast is pretty chilly because of North Sea winds or something
Less rain, but colder
But west coast?
Miiiiiiiiiiiild
by Scottish standards anyway
or Newcastle standards
Those guys are even tougher than us, I reckon
But yeah
Think I'll buy some grit this year so I can do the small road I'm on
The main roads? Fine. Small roads where everyone lives? Greasy polished glass
I saw a van and a polis car sliding about this morning near mine

Q: Windows 10: how to open application as Administrator when clicking on pinned items

Starnuto di topoI added a shortcut to the taskbar pinning it and set its properties to run as administrator. This works fine as long as I launch the application itself. Some applications (such as Visual studio 2015) add a list of recently used documents to the pinned icon, for quicker access. I notice that click...

the accepted answer is the same as mine just without the picture
and 2 years AFTER mine

Can't blame him. Step by steps can be mindlessly followed.

Bob
3:11 PM
@Burgi tbf it's actually different - it suggests going through the compatibility troubleshooter, which will work in some cases where yours doesn't (i.e. when the compat tab is missing, because the properties they're viewing aren't on a normal exe)

there have been several sugardaddy/sugarmama questions on Personal Finance & Money

Q: Sugar daddy wants my online banking login info to make deposits — is it a scam?

anonymousSomeone is offering to pay me in a sort of sugar daddy/sugar baby arrangement. They want to make online deposits to me, and they're asking me for my online banking username and password. Is that information alone enough for them to be able to take my money out of my account, or am I safe?

I have an SSD and an HDD in my laptop. I disabled the HDD in the BIOS. But still when I launch some hefty program, or do some computation-consuming task, I can hear the HDD work! Can this be true, or am I hallucinating?

Coil whine?

Doesn't sound like it
It's so curious!
It's a Dell laptop
Maybe I'll ask a question on main site later
Now I've got to work
o/
@bwDraco On the other hand, you're right
I've just listened closely
There is a sound even when I scroll a page up or down in the browser
I wonder if this tells of bad design or not
Case closed.

:P

5:19 PM
One of my monitors has coil while
It's quite annoying
Wait, can monitors have coil whine?
I assume so

5:53 PM
well caps can whine
especially when going bad

Folks, please do not submit or approve proposed edits that include switching words between USA and UK spelling variations. In this particular scenario, it wasn't appropriate to change "colors" to "colours." — Run5k 4 hours ago

Q: Why does CSS3 use two names for the same color: aqua = cyan, magenta = fuchsia?

Greek - Area 51 ProposalWhy does CSS3 duplicate #00ffff = 0,255,255 and #FF00FF = (255, 0, 255), spotted by this user? This duplication confuses, as each is listed separately on the aforementioned CSS3 link.

Idk why this on SU. Clearly a programming related question.
