@Dog do you know of any drugs which are 1. Inexpensive 2. Easy to get hold of 3. Don't have severe side effects 4. Make the person taking it very, very happy?

@rahuldottech Love.
Oh, wait:
> 2. Easy to get hold of

@ThatBrazilianGuy considering my past experiences, I'm not going to experiment with that right now

There are other meanings for "love" other than romantic love.
But that was just a silly saying.
I hadn't read the previous messages.
So, first point:
DON'T GET DRUG ADVICE FROM DOG.
6
With that out of the way, the best advice is: (1) sleep, (2) exercise.
I do see the irony of it being me to give you this advice, given that I do neither.
But I walked for 90min today on the seaside and it made a hell of a difference

@ThatBrazilianGuy I can't, I wan't to, but I literally can't, given my curcumstances
want*
Ok, going for exam
Wish me luck

12:33 AM
@rahuldottech Go and pass!

@ThatBrazilianGuy or investment advice.

@rahuldottech Good luck!
@rahuldottech Not sleeping enough is a long and shitty suicide.

Believe me.
insert Fight Club speech about insomnia

(on the aibobot account for a bit. Walked into a slightly crazy morning at work)
@ThatBrazilianGuy get a dog, but that's also a crapload of responsibility ;)

@ThatBrazilianGuy “When you have insomnia, you're never really asleep, and you're never really awake. With insomnia, nothing's real. Everything is far away. Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy.” ― Chuck P.

The characters indicate that the batteries are mercury-free.

Bob
O_O
first thing I saw on that page:
> WEIGHT: 2 pounds
software... weight?
> SOFTWARE FORMAT AND MEDIA: CD for Windows
COPY PROTECTION: Includes a USB security lock
That's so weird. Ok, old software, CD ... ... includes a USB DRM key?!
AT&T syntax hurts my brain

> WIN32 protected mode operation allows translation of very large source files (more then to 500,000 lines per file)
Since when is protected mode new?

Bob
@bwDraco Well, it's obviously olllllllllllld software. Which makes the use of USB DRM even weirder.

maybe its a USB to serial with a serial dongle ;p

Well... every dollar counts in today's world. :P

2:31 AM
dosen't explain that its USB lol
or that it weights a KG

Bob
High development cost?
Could probably hammer it out in a day if you understand both assembly syntaxes (syntaxi?)

because its probably a customer requirement
same reason we use <redacted> ;)

And it's open-source, part of the old id Tech 2 engine...

So the weight is probably the software box... and is there for shipping purposes. Right?

and its the minimum in their system

Wow. I just realised I've not moved my laptop in 8 months.
Also I wonder how much a thunderbolt docking station costs these days... Disconnecting 25 cables so I can take my laptop to bed to read stuff is a total pita. Even if I've literally only done it once this year.
Or I could just get a tablet.

you don't have 25 cables on your laptop...

Dog
OK fine, eight. Plus a bunch of velcro straps to attach it to the back of my monitor to use it as an extra screen.
Wonder if the battery even still works....
Wow. Having had this thing physically tied to a table for 8 months, I've completely forgotten how this thing feels to actually use... :-o

I am no stranger to using laptops as desktop replacements.
And even I had to deal with 4-5 cables connected to the laptop that I have to unplug whenever I needed to take the laptop with me. That includes USB keyboard and mouse, power cable, and one or two external monitors.
And sometimes reinsert the battery into the computer (because I had a habit of removing it to preserve battery service life when plugged in for an extended period of time).
It's not crazy, especially when it's a gaming laptop where you're going to set it up like a desktop when you're at home.

That's five cables.
I miss having this much desk space to work with.

@OliverSalzburg woulda been cooler with a 1TB microSDZC (made up term) card from 2018, but oh well
@allquixotic ...lol. It's SDUC (for Ultra Capacity) and it won't be necessary until cards exceed 2 TB in capacity. And while we don't quite have 1 TB microSD cards yet, we're almost there: anandtech.com/show/13339/…
So your prediction was surprisingly accurate ;p
But if microSD cards can hit 512 GB, full-size SD cards can reach 2 TB with current technology. It's just too expensive to be viable right now.
Assuming, of, course, cutting-edge 3D TLC NAND and all.
A whole hard drive's worth of storage... in a device that's not much larger than a postage stamp. Simply amazing.
(FWIW that 512 GB microSD card may very well be using QLC NAND)

ok... what?

I wish i knew how to keep my mouth shut i really do, but i could help but make a joke about it, and he knew immeadiately what i was implying
but oh well last ditched effort, I really just want to get my $300 and laptop back tbh, I feel so trapped having to stay at home or go without reading and studying
hey you called the room "super" users, prove it

Wtf
@JourneymanGeek for some reason @Adam's parent account doesn't exist?

not my fault ;)

@JourneymanGeek wait what
Their main account is deleted but chat account isn't?

That's possible?
Weird.

@Adam erm, you might want to find somewhere else for this sorta thing

7:03 AM
Guys, I open windows cmd from desktop and do F:, It should take me to F:\ drive but it is taking me to F:\Work\git. Anyone got idea why so?

7:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek You know @RahulJain?
@Hennes Should I go ahead with it? (cc @JourneymanGeek)

8:08 AM
@rahuldottech Back to studying with you!

@Bob Gimme a break, I just got back from school

8:19 AM
@rahuldottech No ;p

@RahulJain WHO ARE YOU!?!?!?

But it seemed a nice way to greet a new user .

@JourneymanGeek Heard about the T-Series YouTube drama?
(You... do know T-Series, right?)

8:33 AM
nope

@bwDraco your tomato soup looks a bit... off....

8:50 AM
@rahuldottech Which class you study in?

@RahulJain 12th. Why?

9:11 AM
@rahuldottech just asking! so could anyone help me with my query?
I open windows cmd from desktop and do F:, It should take me to F:\ drive but it is taking me to F:\Work\git. Anyone got idea why so?

@RahulJain That's very strange behavior
And I have no idea what's causing it
You should ask a question on the main site

its your working directory

Hi chat!!

9:28 AM
@BAYMAX 'lo
I'm using Windows Remote Desktop for the first time, and it's pretty neat

Heyo@rahuldottech
.

@BAYMAX Hi. What bring you here today?

I was thinking about this - I have a collection of images say 365 images and I just want that my android phone let me know through notification at a certain time chosen by me the images I collected one at a time!, is there any app that does this? any help

@BAYMAX This is a site primarily about computers
That said, Google Photos does this pretty well
If I'm understanding what you want correctly
Google Photos has a timeline, and it has automated notifications wherein it shows you pictures whick you clicked exactly one year ago on the same date. Pretty neat.

no no no

9:36 AM
Ohh maaan.

@JourneymanGeek What's up?
@BAYMAX Then what do you want?

@BAYMAX @RahulJain Welll so, we kinda have a few conventions in this room since we really want to avoid that old IRC thing where we have many folks asking others to solve their problems
it works really well here
In general, if you have a question - it might belong to the main site (or another site)
especially if you don't get answers.

Sorry, if this question does not fit on this site, it's about Android phone.
Like -
I have 10 images
each image has a single number on it
like 1 to 10
I want that the phone send me notification on day 1 a number

@BAYMAX typically questions that like don't fit on chat here at all

Oh man sorry!
Well i am using Win10

9:41 AM
@BAYMAX Try android.stackexchange.com

computer question

Or their chatroom

@rahuldottech or software recs

Thanks for idea

@JourneymanGeek yep ^

Other discussion sites have ways of contacting users individually
SE kinda discourages that

@bertieb Yeah, duh

And by 'kinda', I mean strongly

New user, no details, no nothing
But the dude who asked the question has like 600+ rep?
They should know better

Don't be so quick to judge

As in

10:29 AM
I'm still finding stuff out about SE

They should know that SE doesn't have a contact-individually option?

Perhaps that earns me a 'duh'

Eh, ok
@bertieb pw3oirjfpowij3rpo3ijr

Stuff isn't obvious until it is
Questions are easy if you know the answer
The user (presumably) didn't know there isn't that option, so they asked
Now they will know
That's the entire point of Q&A
@rahuldottech I can't decode that, sorry
Reading back what I've written it looks like it could come across as patronising, which wasn't my intention
Just... different folks have different levels of knowledge, and are not necessarily as invested / well-read in SE as others

whaddaya think of that prediction that .NET Framework 4.8 is the last, @Bob ? other than the struck through bit where apparently someone called BS on him all but factually stating it... the rest of the article is at least couched in language of it being a guess rather than him stating a fact as if he were an MS employee
I certainly do prefer Core myself but Core needs proper GUI support :P

Bob
12:15 PM
@allquixotic I think it's baseless speculation

Bob
Moving to Core is a good thing, but IMO they'll keep developing on top of Standard and release new Framework versions.
Otherwise you end up in sticky situations where Standard evolves with Core but isn't supported by current Framework
If they're putting Framework on maintenance-only, they'll have to drop Standard too
It's likely that Framework will not receive updates that Core doesn't. i.e. there wan't be new Framework-exclusive functionality.
I could see them providing the Windows-only things as NuGet packages instead.
But at the same time Framework will likely keep pace with Core.
@allquixotic It is kinda-sorta getting WinForms/WPF, but it needs something cross-platform (that isn't browser-based) :\

it looks gorgeous

@Bob they should just take GTK#3

12:46 PM
@Burgi it's an E type

lol
good point :)

It is impossible to design more beautiful car

HUGS

@JourneymanGeek the D-Type comes pretty close
as does the Aston Martin DB5

Yeah except
EW
It has a touch panel for controls
EWWWW
Car control panels should have switches, buttons and knobs
never touch screens
You can intuitively use physical buttons without taking your eyes off the road
Can't do that with touch controls
EW
Car touchscreens are crappy, buggy distractions, unsuitable anywhere outside of spy films

12:50 PM
shrugs
the hire car i had last year had a pretty decent touchscreen

I'd never buy a car with a touchscreen
Making me take my eyes off the road just to change the music or whatever? ewwwww

Bob
1:15 PM
@rahuldottech Many have both
I've seen cars with a joystick-wheel near the gearshift, for use when driving
Touchscreen is easier to use when parked
THey actually disable touch while car is in motion
Also for common actions like music you usually get buttons on the steering wheel
The touchscreen is in addition to tactile controls, not a replacement
(the latter is probably illegal in many places, come to think of it)

1:30 PM
@rahuldottech my car has buttons on the steering wheel for that
also i thought the roads in india were lethal and you'd die immediately if you got on the highway

1:56 PM
This is incorrect. It is 2 scooters with a washing machine full of water.

lol

Bob
2:37 PM

@JourneymanGeek thunk thunk thunk thunk thunk
They should take Mono’s implementation of WinForms for Linux/Mac and do their own WPF for .NET Core on Windows
Or build a .NET equivalent of Swing but better

@Bob ?

Hello everyone, My android phone v6.0(marshmellow) is locked. I can neither enable adb, nor was it rooted. Whats the option I am left with to get my data backup?

yes

yeaaaa this is kinda the exact reason those exist
being able to bypass it would be a security hole

(Something, something, Li-ion isn't Ni-Cad)
I don't think I've ever even seen a reputable manufacturer recommend charging for Li-ion batteries...

I still need to download the manual. And to back up files from my old phone

Bob
Cheapie crap tends to spam that warning regardless of battery composition

4:43 PM
@Hennes lol
Some companies don't understand that lithium-ion does not like deep cycles.

Dog
Speaking of charging, should charge my laptop. Battery calibration after 8 months of 100% AC use is way off.

Oh, I do tend to charge the battery after a week or 10 days.
Usually that is when it hits 25% charge

@Dog Unsurprising.
If you can, completely discharge it (and I actually will put the system into the BIOS setup to discharge that last bit of power, power management be damned), then recharge it fully.
Yes, I did say that deep discharges are bad, but I only do this every few months.
(for Android devices, I'd put it into the bootloader or recovery modes, which similarly ignore the battery's fuel gauge and only shut down when the battery itself is genuinely depleted)
IME that will trip the battery's over-discharge protection, typically set at 2.5V per cell. It's imperative that you plug it immediately (or otherwise as soon as possible) after the device powers down to prevent damage to the battery.
(for most applications, a lithium-ion cell is considered fully discharged at 3.0V, and recharging before the cell drops below ~3.2V is a good idea, except, of course, when calibrating a smart battery's fuel gauge)

5:34 PM
Anyone know a surefire way of nuking windows update? I deleted WU's system files, deleted software distribution folder, deleted update assistant, and it is still updating lol. WTH

6:09 PM
@WeavingBird1917 - Just use WSUS. You then have complete and total control of when updates are installed. However, if you are running Windows 10, you should note that eventually even stable builds (1607,1703,1709,ect) eventaulyl must be upgraded.
Existing questions have answers that outline, how to do what you want, and they still work for 1803.

I'll eventually have to reinstall windows, since the problem is that it tries and re-update but never completes. The user profiles on this install was also corrupted by the upgrade, no new user profiles can be created. Is there a way of doing so without using WSUS? I'm just looking for a quick fix until I reinstall it in a few weeks, which is why I don't bother nuking system files. I moved:
wuapi.dll
wuapihost.exe
wuauclt.exe
wuaueng.dll
wuautoappupdate.dll

, but it still seems to be updating. I'm wondering if there is another file I should move, or is it just updating because there were s

@WeavingBird1917 what says your "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log"

Can I get some help from someone on a linux script that is not running as expected?

6:26 PM
@NordlysJeger Oops I deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder, while trying to figure out why it was restarting on boot even though I moved the WU system files.

Just because you moved system files, does not mean, they cannot be found
However, if you want your system to boot, I wouldn't delete them.

ever looked into windows 10 LTSB? it looks perfect for you

I never deleted it on win10, but on win7 a net stop wuauserv, delete all in the software distribution folder and a net start wuauserv solver most of my windows problems

LTSB requires a volume license. A single license can't be purchased.

right, I forgot
@WeavingBird1917 after your next installation try these methods instead of moving and deleting files. superuser.com/questions/946957/…

6:40 PM
Yes, the log should be somewhere, since everytime I look at the newly created log it starts from 2016. Thanks for the link, I don't have the Group Policy editor, but the second answer looks like it could work. The only reason I'm doing it is because the update fails to complete very time, after my next installation this would probably be fixed, but I'm just looking for a quick fix as of now.

@CanadianLuke If it's super simple I might be able to give some insight.

set +e

echo Disabling password complexity rules...
samba-tool domain passwordsettings set --complexity=off --min-pwd-length=6
# domain should equal your SCHOOLCODE in caps!
domain=EXAMPLE

validate_username () {
        local -r linenum="$1"
        local -r username="$2"
        local tst
        [ -n "$username" ] || {
                echo "Line ${linenum}: Username is empty"
                return 1
        }
        samba-tool user list | grep $username >/dev/null 2>&1 && {
                echo "Line ${linenum}: Username ${username} exists; skipping"
It only runs through adding one name at a time, even though the list will have hundreds of names. It runs through the checks OK for all the existing usernames, so the issue is somewhere in how it add the user and their home folder

Sorry, something came up and I have to leave =/

But try changing the samba-tool user create for echo $un $ps and see if it echoes many lines

6:51 PM
@WeavingBird1917 - You can add the group policy editor to Home editions of Windows, of course, even if you had the group policy editor it wouldn't disable Windows Updates.
@CanadianLuke - Might be blind, but I don't see a loop, outside of reading the bash line.

@Ramhound Did you expand it? The while read line should start the loop

Thanks, the second answer linked by Nordlys seemed to be quite non-intrusive (setting up fake WSUS server), but lengthy, so I'll just stick with the current dirty fix for now until I reinstall. There isn't any more files that I need to move is there? I guess the restart was just due to residual files in SoftwareDistribution.

@ThatBrazilianGuy No problem. I put "echo" before the ssh and samba-tool commands, and the echo'd statements appear correctly

@CanadianLuke - Yes; Isn't, while read fn ln pw; do, just reading the bash line?

Yes, but I usually run it as "./add-students < studentlist.txt"
It takes each line from the file, and plays it into the first command

7:01 PM
What did you mean by "it only runs through adding one name at a time"? Does that mean, it read a single line, from the file?

If I have user one SecretPassword on one line, and joe smith SuperPassword on the next, and user.one already exists, it prints that the user exists, and moves on to joe smith. It creates the account, adds the home folder, then exits, without caring about any names after. If I re-run the script, it shows that user.one and joe.smith exist, and move on to line 3

for each...

7:16 PM
Yep, that would be the reason.

wait, i'm right?

I believe so
It's not my script, but, I think while loop is causing it to exit after the first validation happens

for each line in read line {...
/me shhrugd
m m
trruy running dos2unix on the input file

So if I am not mistaken validate_username || continue is causing it to break when validate_username returns something other than 0
actually
other way around, its causing it to end, because it is 0
is continue equal to 0 in bash?
It would be in something like VBA

continue causes the current loop to continue to the next item in the list
So I use that if the username does NOT pass validation
That part seems to work. As long as validate_username exits with an error code of 0, then it continues on to the next line, as expected
The issue is that after the SSH command, the loop breaks out, and the last couple lines execute, instead of going for the next line in the text file

7:41 PM
just do while read line; do echo line; done
I think it's seeing the file as 1 line
i.e. dos line endings
or if you turn on debugging and run it? :/
wait, what does SSH return on exiting?
> ssh fs1 "mkdir -p /home/${domain,,}/$un; chown -R $domain/$un:$domain/domain\ admins /home/${domain,,}/$un"
because this must be causing it to break outta the loop

Hmmm... Good question... I shouldn't care, to be honest....
OK, I fixed it kinda... After the ssh fs1... line, I added & true. Now the loop keeps going. Now I got another issue to sort out, but the loop is at least working!

so SSH isn't returning 0

7:57 PM
Yup, race condition... File server is not able to run the "chown" part, so I got another friend helping to add a delay in there

8:23 PM

or maybe 1 ;D
