The big exchanges (FB, Twitter, Reddit, YT, whoever) have got themselves between a rock and a hard place, the way I see it

I'm not sure zero censorship is an option if they want to keep doing business because they have to remove certain stuff by law

But equally, I'm not sure I want them to be the final arbiter of truth and correctness

And I'm not sure they do either

Also got a new vape mod, which takes 3x18660 LiIon cells (I find it pretty stupid and irresponsible the ecigarette industry is the only one that not only allows but encourages consumers to directly handle bare, unprotected Lithium Ion cells), but the shop sells them for £10 each so I figured I'd just rip some out of this old laptop battery I got for a fiver that contains six 18650's

FWIW we handle primarily protected 18650 batteries.

It's multi-cell devices of the sort @Dog described that really raises concerns, and the only way they'd genuinely be safe is if there is a BMS which monitors all the cells and ensures that all the cells are used in a balanced fashion, shuts down if any one cell is depleted, etc.

Then again, most flashlights do not pull 15+ amps from their batteries...

(with the exception of a few lights designed specifically to use IMR cells, and these sometimes require cells with proprietary contacts)

(as a rule, a flashlight which takes 18650 cells and is rated for significantly more than 1,000 lm per cell requires IMR cells)

This is why we need competition.

NVIDIA is free to price this as high as the market will bear.

With the number of games supporting RTX... I'm pretty sure NVIDIA has paid the developers. My worst nightmares are coming true.

AMD is very unlikely to have a market-ready solution until 2020.

Given that RTX uses the DirectX Raytracing API, AMD can develop something to implement this, but their resources are spread very thin at this point.

Intel is the only other company capable of competing with NVIDIA on equal footing, and their solution isn't reaching the market until 2020.

As significant a technical advance this is, NVIDIA can use RTX as a cudgel to prevent AMD RTG from being able to compete effectively in all market segments above the entry level. The disadvantage that RTG would suffer from is potentially large enough to force them to exit the GPU market.

AMD has nothing to show at Gamescom.

They're going datacenter first after Vega mostly failed in the consumer market.

First I'm upgrading the processor in 2019, then I'll start saving up for another graphics card.

I will have to miss out on RTX for a while.

It's not unlikely they'll update the 2080 and 2080 Ti at some point with fully-enabled versions of the TU102 and TU104 GPUs.

And yes, they're using NVLink for SLI.

When competition emerges, prices will drop. I expect some new products in 2019 and only then will I make the jump to RTX.

As it stands, NVIDIA effectively has a coercive monopoly at the high end.

I can see the price dropping some $200 or more if and when we see some level of competition from AMD.

Also... I seriously hope more compute can be offloaded to a second, older graphics card. Not necessarily graphics rendering, but AI and physics. (PhysX isn't all that hard on modern NVIDIA GPUs so there has to be something that will make better use of a secondary, non-SLI card.)

Because it's a matter of when, not if, Astaroth will be upgraded with an RTX card.

The OEM cards were already either sold out or not up for preorder within hours of the annoucement

Should pair nicely with my Core i9 9900K, lol
