12:46 AM
Not my fault so many acquaintances decided to born on the same day
This bar's wifi requests a Facebook like to unlock
But my VPN bypassed it without even trying

@ThatBrazilianGuy So don't bitch about it :P
Many hot spots I hit refuse to connect to any of my VPNs. A few let me create an SSH tunnel to use a SOCKS proxy, but not an actual VPN

@ThatBrazilianGuy Hah, I've had some of those

I haven't had need to bitch about WiFi except the very few times I've flown on an airplane; generally if I'm on the ground I have LTE
and I don't really suffer any tangible consequences for exceeding any particular threshold because I have "unlimited" data

1:04 AM
Pretty much the only time I use public/pub wifi is if I'm in a basement with no mobile signal. Which is rare when you can manually force your phone onto the LF bands.

1:19 AM
Well I have data limits
1 GB per week, upgraded to 2 GB

1:42 AM
Hmm.
I guess data is so cheap here I don't have to worry about that stuff

1:55 AM
@Zanna Thanks for asking!
1) While I didn't mention in in this question, I wrote in this question "This behavior makes me wonder if something else unknown to me is using or wanting to use the Keychain, which might be alarming"
2) I can’t think of any reason why using a hot-key command rather than selecting it from a dropdown menu would send the application to my password keychain. I think that understanding why this is the case will be interesting and give me a tad more insight.
3) There’s always the chance that this isn’t really supposed to happen, and that would be illuminating!

@uhoh I think you can re-phrase your question on apple.SE in terms of a problem you're having rather than trying to acquire knowledge that (1) no one but Apple engineers probably knows and (2) isn't as useful as a solution to your problem (and a solution isn't necessarily the same thing as knowledge of your current problem)
and don't cross-post; that's bad manners... if you want it migrated, flag it and it can be migrated, but cross-posting is bad. so... ask in terms of "I'm a user, I did this, now I have this annoying problem, how can I solve it?" and list any attempts you've made to resolve the problem
and that would technically be on-topic for SU too
though probably a bit more people who could answer on apple.SE

2:21 AM
@allquixotic I understand but Stack Exchange questions do not have to be problems. And I do not cross-post. I've asked over 1,000 SE questions, and only came close once, and only after blessing from a moderator that the question would be okay. given the difference and the length of time that had transpired between the two posts in different sites.

I wish I had 1 or 2 GB per week for cell data :( I get 3 GB/mo, and that's lots for Canada

Actually it wasn't due to length of time, only the difference in the question.

@uhoh sorry, I got the wrong idea from this:
11 hours ago, by Yvette Colomb
It;s also cross posted on Unix
I thought that was about your question
my mistake

oic, ya it's unrelated.

@uhoh I think your question is 100% on the ideal site currently (apple.SE) and I'm not sure it would get any better or more timely answers anywhere else... the fact that it has no comments or answers is indicative of it maybe needing to be re-worded a bit or re-phrased, which was why I suggested phrasing it in terms of a problem rather than a "why"
it's kind of sad but I think it would get more eyes (and maybe even an answer?!?!) on stackoverflow.com because that site just has soooooo many users vs. the other sites -- assuming it didn't get closed first :P -- but we both know it'd be bad form to post it there, heh

2:33 AM
yep, I have a lot of practice posing questions as problems, but in this case I honestly want to know why, and the only honest modification I can think of is "My problem is that I don't know why, but I want to"

hah

Each site is different. On Apple SE there are many questions that have no comments or answers. It's a slow site with few experts. Sometimes questions get answered months or years later.
few experts - for some types of questions.. It's a great site in general of course!

there don't seem to be too many experts on things that are Apple-specific outside of, well, Apple... I guess there are probably plenty of experts on programs like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, but not, like, internal proprietary systems
and for some stuff you can just read the source because it's open source, or it's equivalent to BSD/Linux so you can ask on unix.SE
I've been a MacOS/iPhone user for a couple years but never encountered anything like that -- worst problem I've had is failure to upgrade to new versions of MacOS on my MBP

Any thoughts on this question then? I always feel silly photographing my Apple laptop screen with my Apple phone.

2:59 AM
hah
wouldn't er... itunes let you do that?
On android, its a MTP device so... it just works (tm)

1 hour later…
4:08 AM
So I spilled some drugs, but not any lube.
Progress!

4:24 AM
... What?

Oh I forgot to boot a server

4:53 AM
By 2025 modern websites will be nothing but warnings loops about accessing the website will access the website.
Hmm I feel like my server's connection is not what's causing my slow downloads

5:13 AM
@CircusCat nah, they'll just make you explicitly consent at every layer of the OSI model :D
layer 7 = click OK
layer 6 = write an HTTP response saying "OK"
layer 5 = ???
layer 4 = ???
layer 3 = send a TCP packet with the raw text "OK"
layer 2 = send a raw ethernet frame with the bytes "OK"
layer 1 = tap on your Ethernet cable or transmit the raw RF signal for "OK"

5:29 AM
Ah, yeah. Apparently a common solution for tanks that need to be welded from inside in case you don't intend to use the lost welder method. — SF. 13 hours ago

5:41 AM
Hey, super guys. 😊

user226528
What's up?

5:54 AM
@allquixotic Sorry but you must be linked in to the EU mindlink system to authorise this transmission. Unfortunately you are not in the EU.

6:30 AM
@allquixotic lol

1 hour later…
7:43 AM
GDPRv3 does not allow layer 1 transmissions to or from the EU without prior authorisation from a competent national authority.

user226528
7:53 AM
@CircusCat Hi. Where did you see that?

@EUserNameError I suspect it's a joke ...

user226528
@DavidPostill Why? Actually, I can see reason for such a thing, given what the parties that don't support net neutrality think.

user226528
But TBH, I didn't know GDPRv3 is a thing.

user226528
Is there a GDPRv2 in the first place?

There's isn't a V3.
Which is part of the joke.

7:59 AM
also an irc joke

However, this is way more amusing!

No.
> The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679 is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area.
> Date made 14 April 2016
Implementation date 25 May 2018

user226528
Yeah. That's what I originally thought. TBH, I wouldn't give much value to such a sentence if I see it in other rooms. You know, non-computing guys and gals may say anything.

Version 1 has just been implemented after 2 years delay to allow everyone to get their systems and procedures updated.

user226528
Well... Time to change my username back to what it originally was. It didn't serve the purpose it should.

8:05 AM
@EUserNameError Computing peeps are allowed to make jokes as well ...

user226528
True dat.

user226528
Sorry for being such a stick-in-the-mud.

@MichaelFrank Yeah, funny but true :)

4 hours later…
11:56 AM
Hmm. No opinion on this but ...
> President Trump falsely accused The New York Times on Saturday of making up a source in an article about North Korea, even though the source was in fact a senior White House official speaking to a large group of reporters in the White House briefing room.

:)

12:38 PM
Hmm.
> Outrage has swept through Brazil after it was revealed £1.2million of public money was spent on making a TV show about the nation's sexiest bottoms.

The money was paid to the production company behind a new reality show following the winners of the famous Miss Bumbum competition, which elects the country's most beautiful behind.

But critics accused politicians of 'breathtaking stupidity' in finding the cash to promote the Brazilian bottom while the country is in the midst of its worst economic crisis in decades.
Not a good day for politicians?

1:01 PM
Is there ever one?
Also cc @ThatBrazilianGuy

;D
soooooooooooo
it's so muggy here
actually melting

@djsmiley2k Well that's because you are a muggle :)

lol

user226528
1:53 PM
Hey, guys. Can I know your opinion on something?

user226528
@djsmiley2k Oh, hello! If it isn't the coolest person I know on Stack Exchange... :)

user226528
Anyway, I wrote this answer and it got a downvote without explanation. I want to know if you can spot anything wrong with it:

user226528

A: Where is the default web root folder in Windows 7?

EUserNameErrorMicrosoft has a very small free utility called TCPView. This tool has button on its toolbar that can reveal or hide unconnected endpoints. You'll want to do this: Run TCPView with administrative privileges. Reveal unconnected endpoints. Sort the list based on the remote port and find port 80. I...

i wouldn't care about a single downvote tbh
ut no, i see nothing wrong.

user226528
@djsmiley2k lol. Yeah. You say that every time and I concur with you every time. But as I say every time, it doesn't hurt to check with a third party.

1:58 PM
sure

user226528
FYI, my dad used to say something about some crazy professor's principle: He believes that as long as I check every time, the downvote is always unjustified. That exact time that I don't check is the time when I should and the downvote is well-deserved.

Bob
2:11 PM
lol whoops... created a new github account for a quasi-anonymous paste and got flagged for looking too spammy -_-
time for the support dance!

2:52 PM
send the data to me, I'll paste it?
;D

3:50 PM
49strikes / minute round here atm

4:07 PM
@DavidPostill What's one million when the government pardoned a $30 billion debt from banks? And that pales in comparison to the sale of the world's biggest petrol underwater source by what amounts to a bunch of peanuts.
cc @JourneymanGeek
They're also pressuring from all sides to sell Petrobras (IIRC the world's biggest petrol enterprise, or at least the world's biggest gomnt-owned petrol enterprise), because "it's huge, corrupt, broken and losing money" despite multiple studies showing it isn't actually losing money and in fact it guarantees a lot of money to our economy.
And they're also making a huge pressure to end the public retirement fund, because "it is a money sinkhole".
And they're also trying to end public hospitals and health service and public universities
And also the-candidate-that's-basically-Hitler is leading the election polls.
And also the extreme fundamentalist groups are spreading into Senate faster and faster
> $30 billion
Technically BRL 30 billion = ~ USD 8 billion. But still.

4:32 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Apparently not all is well in Brazil? Join the club.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I tried to reply to you in Matrix, but you're not there yet D:
and I'm not touching that topic with a 10 ly pole in chatse because flags

Funny thought: If "talking politics" is... heavily discouraged in chat, what people talk about in the Politics main chatroom?

@ThatBrazilianGuy they talk meta-politics obviously

@allquixotic Okay, I'm joining.
Where's the tutorial link again?
It should have been present in the pinned message. shakes fist at cloud

5:05 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy I will with the next pin after that one falls off

OK, I'm on Matrix.

5:24 PM
@allquixotic what am I missing?!?

@ThatBrazilianGuy "talking politics" is... heavily discouraged in chat. Says who?
What is Matrix?

5:43 PM
@djsmiley2k Oh. That is so very cool :)

6:13 PM
So for some reason the Riot.im Android app only shows me a spinning loading indicator and lots of "network error" messages after I fill in my credentials
Oh now it works. Weird.

What's your homeserver?
The main matrix.org one is pretty busy and sometimes wonks out for me
Might be good to go with roota.cc

yup @DavidPostill

7:17 PM
@BenN roota.cc
@CanadianLuke So, the absolute majority of telcos offer 2 ~ 4 GB per month on the monthly plans.
I found out some prepaid plans offer a lot more data
Despite some people treating you like scum if they found out you use prepaid

Canadian Mobile Phone Providers pretty much always suck

7:43 PM
I get 1.4 GB per day for 5 dollars for 84 days

@rahuldottech What's the Indian minimum wage?
Here it's 275 USD

@ThatBrazilianGuy 2.36 USD per day

@rahuldottech No, the minimum monthly wage. Is there such a thing?

Multiply by 30?
Idk
People suck. So much. God.

Well there's some advantages to living in Rio:

7:56 PM
Goodnight

@rahuldottech Per... DAY? God.
That explains so much of the outsourcing stories.
Expectation: Matrix will replace SE chat
Reality: same group of people having parallel conversations on two channels.

8:27 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy India doesn't have a minimum wage.
A fact that is easily discoverable if you check the net.
And even if the legislation for one was passed, it would not mean much.
In a place like India, laws are often not enforced.

We have that shit in Yurop too

8:54 PM
@CircusCat is that today?
The photos I sent were taken by me in real time
@FaheemMitha Dude, you're talking to a Brazilian.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ok. And your point is?

@ThatBrazilianGuy how can you prove it's real-time if its not a live stream?

@CircusCat real time as in I took it and sent it here
@FaheemMitha we have a long story of not enforcing laws

@ThatBrazilianGuy I believe you.
