Bob
12:02 AM
@rahuldottech WizTree is fast
But "safe to delete" is something you'll have to figure out yourself.

@Bob thanks, I'll check it out

12:28 AM
And I am indeed getting USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds out of this SSD enclosure:
(tested on Astaroth, the only system I have with USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports)

@rahuldottech Used iPXE to boot over the Internet

@CanadianLuke cool! I've never tried that myself, but I know of it

Yea! So from the iPXE shell, just type chain --autofree http://boot.netboot.xyz. It will configure itself, then present you a menu to pick what Linux distro or Windows ISO or tool you want to boot
Totally dangerous if end users had access, but still! It's wicked cool

Yeah!
So... the only thing I can see which can be gotten rid of and is of significant size is Nox, the android emulator
also wtf @Bob how is this thing so fast

1 hour later…
Bob
2:00 AM
@rahuldottech It reads the MFT directly

@Bob I figured
cool stuff

2:28 AM

2:39 AM
3 guesses as to what that substance could be...
(A Hint: It starts with c and ends with e)

@MichaelFrank Capacitor electrolyte. Is this from a machine you're servicing?

@bwDraco No, and yes.
Good guess though.

(yes i made a batch file which types that out for a stupid meme thingy when, instead, i should be studying)

Well, on closer review... someone spilled coffee into the computer? Wat?

2:45 AM
It's also not coffee! :o
@bwDraco Okay, I'll spill the beans... It's chocolate sauce. o.o

lol
Is this in a Starbucks or other coffee shop?
Restaurant? Bakery?

Something like that.
The interesting part... these PCs are suspended from the roof when they are installed.
So I have no idea how it ended up with chocolate sauce on the inside.

From the VT8237A audio controller... Is this a P4 machine?

I hadn't bothered to check.
Probably, it's old enough.

From the markings around the socket (AL, AN, AR), it appears to be LGA 775.
(can't be 771, that's a server socket)

3:08 AM
PS C:\Users\brian> whoami
astaroth\brian
(TIL whoami is part of the Windows system)

Bleh... this is a too hard basket problem for today I think. Trying to figure out a way I can install a non-portable test tool app onto a WinPE image so I can boot from USB and run the test tool without having to image the whole HDD twice.
Hmm... I wonder if it'd install on a Hiren XPE...

Bob
3:25 AM
@MichaelFrank That's ... pretty easy lol
@MichaelFrank Is it a public tool?

@rahuldottech rofl

Bob
... did you just retype that?

@MichaelFrank windows 2 go might work. Rufus will generate one happily
@MichaelFrank squirt bottles

Bob
@JourneymanGeek if you're running an imaging tool, winpe is probably better than 2go

@Bob ...sorry about that.

Bob
3:29 AM
much more lightweight, probably boots faster and on more hardware, etc

@Bob Yea, it's just an OPOS Management tool used to check various functions for a POS device.

But why are you running LGA775 machines?

Because Point of Sale hardware very rarely changes.

Isn't this a huge waste of energy? Why can't this be upgraded to a more modern platform?
Is it P4 or C2D?

Dunno, don't really care. We aren't contracted to improve the hardware, just keep what is already there running.

@MichaelFrank ew. Hiren is oooold

Lots of amazing keyboard shortcuts, e.g. Windows+. (period) open an emoji IME.
(as of Windows 10 version 1709)
2
Q: How do I bring up the emoji IME on Windows 10?

gmanI'm running Windows 10, edition: Windows 10 Pro, version: 1703, OS Build: 15063.608. According to several articles around the net I should be able to press win+. or win+; to bring up an emoji IME that looks like this But when I press win+. nothing happens. When I press win+; the magnifier sh...

If you must use Hiren, try FalconFour instead, which is an improved version, but still a few years old. If you want the best/latest, use MediCat. If you just want a Windows environment, use WindowsToGo made with Rufus
@MichaelFrank

A room owner might want to pin that link.

4:07 AM
rofl
Also... to go to the notification area ("system tray"), use Windows+B.

@bwDraco huh, that's cool
Rarely ever go there though

I remember the days when we had to fix a computer that had a nonworking mouse due to some sort of driver issue...

I don't ever safely eject my drives. I like living on the edge 🔥 (ง'̀-')ง

I think that was close to two decades ago.
10
A: Why do some USB storage devices lack an "eject" option?

bwDracoSummary This is ultimately a matter of whether the device uses MSC or MTP/PTP. As a rule, dedicated storage devices like flash drives and external hard drives use MSC, while smartphones and other devices which need to maintain access to the data while connected to a computer or require control o...

@Baldrickk Oh she's long gone ^_^ — Lightness Races in Orbit 16 hours ago
Lmao

4:14 AM
^_^

@bwDraco oh yeah, I've noticed. MTP/PTP doesn't show the same eject option. I figured that's because they're devices communicating through a protocol, rather than just disks
I also think this is why Android removed the "USB Mass storage" option, because it caused filesystem errors
Although I might be wrong about this
> Here are couple of reasons.

Earlier Android used to have /data partition for app data and /sdcard for movies, music and rest. Say you are an app freak and have installed lots of apps, what happens in /data fills up but still you can't use space from your /sdcard as it's a separate partition. Now what Google has done is used unified file system. So that you can share space between /sdcard and /data. USB mounts storage on host and gives entire block level access to the host. If this is done the partition is unmounted from your phone. It was fine when /sdcard was separate now since both /da

> Microsoft holds patents for long file name support on FAT filesystem
These patents have expired.

One really interesting thing I learnt last year was that Android also supports PTP through USB OTG
As in, you can connect your camera with a USB cable and then transfer photos using the default gallery app
It's really handy when you're travelling and want to share photos from your camera
@bwDraco well, the quote is from five years ago, but that's good to know
> Mass storage also requires manual mount/unmount which is not user friendly and if you miss this manual operation you risk file system corruption.
So I was right

Yea, I saw that page earlier. Just need to figure out what I need to copy over. Since this installer throws a few drivers in for good measure.

@MichaelFrank Instead of making WinPE yourself, you can just use MediCat (It's based on WinPE) and run your exe on it

@rahuldottech I think the issue is it needs an install

Yea, it also requires a restart, annoyingly.

4:50 AM
For winpe you need to create a plugin

Bob
@bwDraco Not particularly.
It's not time-sensitive, not particularly significant, and pins are short-term anyway.
@JourneymanGeek Nah, you don't need a plugin.
If you know what you need, you can just chuck the files in and you're good to go.
@MichaelFrank Try something like Revo to track what the install adds?

@ThatBrazilianGuy UGH I HATE YOU NOW I WANT PIZZA

@Bob Could try that.
I'll look into it again tomorrow when I'm back at work.

5:46 AM
wat
You can't be serious. AMD is dual-sourcing the 12nm Polaris 30 GPU in the new RX 590.
But it does mean that they're using less GlobalFoundries 12nm capacity.

@bwDraco that's a bit of an overreach for a GPU that won't sell that well....?

It consistently outperforms the GTX 1060, but at a substantial power cost.

they oughta focus on going big
beat the 2080

@HornOKPlease It's a stopgap. NVIDIA has no new products for the midrange, and AMD is hoping to hit that high-volume segment with something competitive, something built on newer process technology.
Navi is due for 2019.
But by dual-sourcing the chip, they are ensuring that there's enough 12nm capacity for second-gen Ryzen chips, which AFAICT are all fabbed at GlobalFoundries.

Hi folks. Will wifi routers that support 3g dongles, accept android usb tethered internet connections?
3g or whatever...i mean the ones that come with the cellular network provider...

5:58 AM
And AMD does not normally do this precisely because of the potential for variance from the output between the two fabs.

@deostroll I can test that when I get home

@JourneymanGeek which router do you have?

@deostroll I have a spare Asus

Hmm. Does the router support RNDIS? Because that's what Android uses.

I thought that's what dongles used
My laptop treats the both as a wired connection

6:03 AM
Most USB 3G/4G modems use RNDIS, so chances are very good that it'll work.
(though some older ones used PPP)

They might use ppp internally
I had an old Nokia that pretended to be a USB Ethernet dongle iirc
Anyway I can test that fairly trivially

For this to work, android has to first detect that it is USB connected when plugged into the router...Is this part of the RNDIS spec?

@deostroll If you turn on USB tethering, it'll present itself as an RNDIS modem.
That's in the tethering menu in Settings.

Even to turn on USB tethering on android, you have to be USB connected first, and android should show you that...
Once android realizes it is usb connected, we have the option to connect in USB storage mode (this is the most popular one), and other modes too (can't recall)

Hmm... If it's an active host capable of completing a USB handshake (and it almost certainly is), then you should be able to turn on USB tethering.

6:15 AM
@deostroll hence wanting to test it
I mean were I at home, I could test this in about 30 s

@bwDraco how do you know - I mean what is the router feature that would suggest this?

@deostroll actually on my phone I need to long press the hotspot button

Bob
@deostroll Yea, worst case the debug menu on most Android phones will let you force a specific mode.

Bob
> Dreaded Pirate Larry was somewhat worried, as he looked down at his boot, where his first mate was stretched out, making whooshing sounds, attempting to blow him over, that despite having the fastest ship, the most eye patches, and the prettiest parrots, his crew may need a few lessons on the difference between literal and figurative, as evidenced by the rest of the crew applying ice to the timbers.

Guess what?
It looks like both USB Type-A ports on Stolas are in fact USB 3.1 Gen 2.
(I was unable to test the Type-C port because the only adapter on hand is very flaky and keeps disconnecting the drive)
I guess Astaroth isn't the only system on hand with 10 Gbps USB ports...
A USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) port would top out at about 460 MB/s.
This is one of only two storage devices I have that support USB 3.1 Gen 2. (The other is the enclosure for the swap SSD on Bifrons.)

6:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek are you like away on vacation or something? :)
just wanted to know...like how soon you can provide info...

Lol. 4 or t hours
I am at something similar to but not entirely unlike work.

cool

7:35 AM
morning

you needed to remove the query string

8:16 AM
Ahhh

8:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol
@deostroll hey!
@deostroll I can test this out for you, just lemm get done with lunch, ok?

9:20 AM
> I always remove super glue with - super glue :P This sounds stupid, but the solvents in the fresh super glue make the dry glue come off again most of the time. You just have to be quick at wiping it off before it hardens :)
iz dis troll?

9:35 AM
lol what
@rahuldottech Dunno
i just pick it, til it comes off.

10:04 AM
@rahuldottech just ping the result

just use denatured alcohol
back when i worked on a helpdesk we pranked one of the guys by drawing a face on his whiteboard. when he went to rub it off he found that we'd done the nose and eyes in permanent marker
they looked.... phallic
anyway the way you get permanent marker off a whiteboard is by scribbling over it with a normal drywipe marker
so maybe the superglue thing is similar

Guys, I don't even know where to ask this question, hope this chat is the right place... It's most probably a classi question, but I haven't managed to find a satisfactory answer so far - on Windows (Server) when getting "The system cannot find the file specified." error - is there any way to wrap the binary that triggers the error so that I can somehow find out what access path is tried by this program when the error occurs?

You certainly could ask that on SU
I don't know the answer unfortunately, and I suggest it's going to be application specific, but maybe there is a way in windows to log 'file accesses'

might be a better fit on Server Fault?

@djsmiley2k I have this internal conflict: I can't find the answer yet at the same time I can't believe it's not problem that has been solved a million times before :P

Bob
10:19 AM
@KrzysiekSetlak Where do you see the error?
A popup dialog?
Use Process Explorer or Spy++ to find out which process owns the dialog.
You could also use Process Monitor but you'll be absolutely spammed with results so you'd still want to isolate it to the correct process first. procmon would tell you the paths.

It's in cmd unfortunately which means that the process exists for a picosecond, spits out the error and then terminates

@KrzysiekSetlak at worst it gets closed as dupe.

Bob
@KrzysiekSetlak Try procmon and good luck filtering it down :P

10:48 AM
@deostroll can't get internet to work on it

but a normal dongle works?

@deostroll I don't have one to test with
I usually use this router for LAN→WiFi

which is your wifi router?

Here's the setup: Phone→USB→Router→Power Bank
@deostroll TP-Link MR3020
It's the best as far as routers of this sort go

@Bob as I said the process gets terminated straight away, so I won't see it in procmon or any other real time monitoring tool

10:53 AM
does android detect when it is connected to usb to the router?

@deostroll yes
@deostroll apparently you can use openWRT (which fully supports this router) and then use USB tethering
Also, hey!
This thing is supposed to work for what you want:

then you should be able to usb tether...what was your issue?

@deostroll on the status page, it is stuck on "Connecting..." And I'm unable to connect to any websites

what status page? You mean the router's status page?

@deostroll yes

10:58 AM
what phone do you have?

Lenovo Z2 Plus
@deostroll like I said, take a look at the Alibaba link

can you install termux in it?

@deostroll I have it
> Compatible with HSPA +/HSUPA/HSDPA/CDMA DVDO RO/RA/RB USB Modem

how do you normally use the router...? LAN -> wifi ?
or dongle -> wifi?
the item on aliexpress is not available...

@deostroll LAN -> WiFI
@deostroll There are plenty of other listings for the same product
The link I shared was just the one which I happened to have bookmarked

11:06 AM
but it is also meant to work as 3g -> wifi?

@deostroll Most definitely
12 mins ago, by rahuldottech
https://www.tp-link.com/dz/support/3g-comp-list.html?model=TL-MR3020&location=12‌49
Supports a really impressive number of USB modems ^

11:34 AM
@rahuldottech did you connect both LAN and dongle at the same time?

@deostroll no

hmm. I wonder why

@deostroll ...why would I?

the tp link page you shared...I couldn't what it was...

11:42 AM
what were you trying to convey sharing that page...? I didn't follow

@deostroll details about the router

will check all that later...
gtg

Bob
12:03 PM
@KrzysiekSetlak procmon is not real time.
it logs everything that happens while it's open
it logs just about everything that every process does, hence the "spammed with results"
i.e. you'll get probably many millions of lines, and many thousands of "file not founds", within a minute

@Bob Did you try convincing the admin to edit the DB?

12:38 PM
@Bob OK, I'll try that, thanks!

meatballs \o/

Bob
1:42 PM
@rahuldottech no lol
I don't have contacts like that

1:56 PM
:/
OMG WHY DO PEOPLE NEVER SHUT UP WHY DO THEY TALK SO MUCH AHSBWHHSGWGGSVE

o.O

I swear to God, when people just keep talking and talking and talking it makes me want to go play in traffic
Like. C'mon. Dude. Stop. Talking. Already.
Please.

have you asked them to be quiet?

2:53 PM
@Burgi can't always do that :/
Also, people often don't listen/care

headphones or move somewhere quieter
otherwise suck it up

3:17 PM
@Burgi I'm mostly talking about school
But luckily I only have to attend for a few more days

2 hours later…
5:27 PM
So, the initial version of staqi-bot should be ready in a couple hours

This is my four-digit PIN. It was passed down to me by my father, and someday I will pass it on to you. Unless we figure out how to update it, but that sounds complicated.

6:16 PM
Well, that's embarrassing.
At least it's not something that would require a password change but do watch your inboxes carefully.

Not great. Hardkernel (the manufacturer of ODROID single-board computers) says they're unable to procure Gemini Lake chips.

More QLC NAND coming: guru3d.com/news-story/…
Hmm. 1,440 TBW for the 4 TB drive, 3-year warranty. That's 0.12 DWPD over three years, or 0.07 DWPD over five years.
The Intel and Crucial drives (both using IMFT QLC) both have 5-year warranties, with 0.1 DWPD endurance.
@HornOKPlease, you might be interested in this?

6:50 PM
Oh, I want a pair of 4TB SSDs for that price

If you're looking for bulk storage with infrequent writes (e.g. games and other large applications), this might be your answer.

That.
1TB SSD and 4TB rotanting rust atm
Which spins up every 5 minutes (windows, so no hdparm to tweak it)
Swammping that to 1+4 or 2x4 SSD might be nice. And then I could put the old 1TB SSD in my sisters old core2 laptop (IBM R60)

@Hennes The ThinkPad R60 is at least 12 years old. Just how long do these laptops last?

7:05 PM
Still ticking
And upgraded from XP to win 7....
I checked last weekend. Last windows update ran in 2016. 1 optional update available. But downloading that fails
To be fair I swapped the old disc with a 240GB SSD, maxed memory and replaced the battery 6 years ago. (though it currently blink orange on power up in the replace me mode)

> Normally questions like this have one result - a post on StackExchange from seven years ago asking the exact same thing. That will then have five answers, with varying degrees of condescension, saying that OP is a moron for ever considering that that might be something they want to do, and instead what they need to do is some horribly convoluted workaround involving three languages and twelve libraries that go so far beyond the original scope they may as well have answered in Esperanto.

But no internet yet at my sisters home.
and no television either

Man, reddit loves hating on SE/SO

SO I dumped an ancioent screen (Dell WFP24 something. 24" IPS with soundbar) and a WD elementt 4TB external drive (man, that one is silent and sustains 130MB/sec. More that my 4x1TB HW RAID array) full of movies, ebooks and music
SO so has some stuff for in the evenings
I guess I could get a win10 licence, replace the OS, replace the battery...
But a cheap new laptop with OS on it might be a much better choice

@Hennes The 11-year-old monitor that originally came with my father's old desktop is still in service and is now being used with a new Ryzen-based (Raven Ridge) HP desktop.
(via an HDMI to DVI-D adapter)

7:09 PM
I tend to upgrade monitor rather often.
2x 1280x1024 19" screens (at almost half a mont budget when flat panels where exotic), then this 24" dell. IPS. 5 inputs including S-VHS, VGA, that shiny new thing called DVI, ...
then a cheap 26" TN
Then the Dell 2505 (2560x1440
and now the proper 4K IPS screen
the 19"ers are nice though 4:3 resolutionm rocks

I tend to see displays as durable devices that generally don't need to be replaced outright unless they develop problems.

Ah. I do not need to replace them. They just need more resolution.

I've had a cheapie 21.5" 1080p IPS monitor for more than four years. Horrible IPS glow and slow response times, but who cares when all you need is a display?

1080 irritates me unless I rotate it
not enough vertical space and endless scrolling

7:16 PM
I'm used to working with a 1366x768 display.
And yes, I do want more display area but it's a bottom-bin netbook and cost was the overriding consideration.

14C in here D:

7:54 PM
@rahuldottech that was said by Jeff Atwood ;)

Also, Windows now has virtual desktops.
In college, I would never have gotten by without a second monitor. And during one project during which I did not have a second monitor, I used the TV in the living room to get by while my parents were in bed.

@bwDraco fi na ly

wait no
Windows has had virtual desktops for ages
I thought you meant VMs

Well, since Windows 10.

@bwDraco Windows 10 has always had vritual desktops

To quickly switch between virtual desktops, press Windows+Ctrl+Left/Right Arrow.

It's like, four years old

8:11 PM
I'm just wondering how many people here use this feature...

@bwDraco I know, been using them forever
I most certainly do

Folks... I am going out to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade tomorrow. I will be offline much earlier than usual. I will need to be in the field no later than 5 am.

11:02 PM
@JourneymanGeek congrats! i hope it isn't mega stressful for you and that it doesn't impact upon your Super User duties too much

Probably shouldn't.

11:30 PM
Microsoft had virtual monitors since 95... It just wasn't always enabled

...and I am not going tomorrow. I am not adequately prepared and was denied permission for safety reasons.
More details in Matrix.
