...well, something I noticed on my two newer PowerCores: They have improved protection circuitry. At the time, I managed to do the same thing with my newer PowerCore 13000 and when VBUS got shorted to data, the unit actually hard-reset itself (the four LEDs lit up in sequence). That same unit also does that if it's shorted when nearly depleted (presumably because the internal voltage sees a sudden drop below the critical protection point and the unit resets itself).

The one I most recently got, a PowerCore 10000, will do the same thing when nearly depleted and the power pins (not data) are shorted: the power LEDs light up in sequence, indicating a hard reset.

On the PowerCore 20100, if I do the same thing, the unit completely stops working (it will not light up at all even if I press the power button) until I plug it in.

I would want to suspect that newer units will have the improved protection circuitry. AIUI the 20100 unit I have is an original production model.
