She fractured her chin after falling down the stairs and hitting the floor?
That kind of impact can actually lead to a concussion.

4:09 AM
I'm not sure you're the right person to talk about that ;p
Smiley is a responsible adult and got his forked process down to a doctor

@JourneymanGeek This will never happen again.
I'm expecting dramatic improvements in a matter of days or weeks.
brb for shower, but I'll continue on Matrix in a bit.

@JourneymanGeek so I'm walking past it again and now everyone's dancing to gangnam style :P

Should I migrate this one to SuperUser?

Q: Why do aging desktop PCs need multiple starting attempts?

neverMind9The power supply unit may be reaching the end of its lifespan. After switching the PC on, it stays on for a few seconds and then falls back off again. But why do old PCs with aged PsU's not stay turned on successfully at try 1 occasionally but then do after a few automated restart attempts? M...

@NickAlexeev considering how, uh, hyper the OP is, I'd say it's better just left closed on electronics.se
You could give them a link to SU and inform them that they can ask here after reading the FAQ though, if you so wish.

8:26 AM
An interesting find at my local electronics store

@NickAlexeev no

@gparyani dear lord.

@djsmiley2k What happened?

I'm just imagining the lack of charging protection circuitry in them

@djsmiley2k there's actually a commercial product like that
and they might just sacrifice capasity for it

8:33 AM
@djsmiley2k What makes you think it lacks that?

8:51 AM
JUST THE Size

@djsmiley2k There is an LED that changes color once it's fully charged, however

hmmmm maybe it's all right then :D

1 hour later…
9:54 AM
ooooooooo
Motorolla have pushed out oreo for the G5.
or my provider have
/me shrugs
This is quite exciting :O
I've never had this before :D

Hmm... what can I do is bootrec /scanos returns no results? :|
do if*

Bob
10:35 AM
@MichaelFrank you fix it manually

I think my manual fix will be to extract files from the drive manually and reinstall Windows.

Bob
@MichaelFrank it's perfectly possible to fix the boot entries manually
'cept I'm kinda preoccupied to walk you through it right now -_-

10:55 AM
Good day all ))
My File Explorer started hanging again. I've been using Windows since 1994 but have never had problems with Explorer. Windows 10 is an amazing system in this regard. Now I know how to check the system for integrity, how to check the harddrive, how to check it for viruses using several programs.

11:11 AM
@Bob I probably won't blow the current OS away for a couple more days. If you do find the time I'd be interested in trying it.

11:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek These AAA batteries are rated 450 mAh; is that less than usual?
They also make a 1,000 mAh AA version
But for charging, they are only rated at 80 mA
...so that means they need 6 hours to charge

Bob
12:06 PM
@MichaelFrank First question: BIOS or UEFI install?
@CowperKettle First port of call is shell extensions.

12:34 PM
and I've started the android upgrade
says eta 30 min, we'll see...
@CowperKettle in the past (many years ago) it would be intermittant/bad network connection causing the read-ahead on network drives to fail horribly.

2 hours later…
2:25 PM
@Bob I discovered that when File Explorer starts, it does not respond and loads one full core of the CPU. However, if the starting view is not its default folder "quick view" (blue star) but some other folder, it works okay - until I go to "quick view".

Bob
@CowperKettle Easiest thing to check is shell extensions. Often it's a dodgy one that stalls somewhere.
Otherwise, load up process monitor and see what it's doing.
You can also look at the currently running thread in Process Explorer's detailed view.

3:00 PM
This has just resolved the issue.
Thank you though!

A: How can data be lost on an SSD drive?

bwDracoMost SSDs use NAND, which retains data without power. Most SSDs use electronic chips called NAND flash memory. NAND itself is non-volatile, meaning it retains its data even when power is removed, but data loss can occur in a number of different ways that are very different from how an electromec...

I'm kinda surprised that sometimes, my most comprehensive answers don't get that much attention :(
I've written a lot about SSDs and people don't seem to care much about the technical side of flash.
About why trimming matters and why SSDs may slow down when nearly full or when lots of data are written to them in a short period of time.
And how one might extend the life of an SSD that is expected to be used heavily.

5:03 PM
@bwDraco ooh, I'd like to know the reason behind this. It's in the answer?

I have a number of different answers covering stuff like write amplification, though I don't think I've written much on SLC buffering on the main site...

@bwDraco this was a great read. I'll read through the other posts when and as I get free time
@bwDraco if I want to preserve some data for, say, about a hundred years or so without any specialized equipment, how should I go about it?

Try searching user:73918 [ssd].
My recommendation is archival optical media, though unfortunately, we can't really do testing beyond accelerated aging so it's still a bit of a crapshoot. I'd still recommend rewriting the data periodically.

A: What medium should be used for long term, high volume, data storage (archival)?

gaborousShort answer It's impossible to guarantee a long timeframe because of entropy (also called death!). Digital data decay and dies, just like any other thing in the universe. But it can be slowed down. There's currently no fail-proof and scientifically proven way to guarantee 30+ years of cold dat...

@rahuldottech paper and pencil?
it's lasted a few thousand years so far.
engraving in stone
it depends how far you want to take non-specialist.
You wanna make sure it really lasts 100 years?
you make it make history
write it into the bitcoin hashchains
write a virus that duplicates ite verywhere
scribe it in blood on the side of a mountain and have the press cover the fact.

It looks like you've hit the 30,000-character answer length limit. If you need to add more information, you can split off some of the content into another answer. Include a link to the other answer in each post to make navigation easier for readers. — bwDraco Aug 6 '16 at 20:00

@djsmiley2k can't write down videos :)
@bwDraco thanks

I'd call the cops at this point.

5:43 PM
@bwDraco Ahahaha, this is India, they won't do anything
Also, mom and sis left for Bhutan today, I'm home alone again, no way that I'm going to take any chances of getting into trouble.

5:57 PM
Quick question: how can I add earthing/grounding to a power outlet if my apartment doesn't have a earth wire connection?
Apparently I can connect it to a water pipe?

6:37 PM
@rahuldottech carefully.

It took me half a year but I've managed to fill both my drives again.

that's a lotta crap

progress: it moved an millimeter

@Nick looks like 41 gigs of porn.... also why do you pirate music videos when they're just on youtube?

6:57 PM
@HornOKPlease I don't always have internet access and I have music needs.
The 41 gigs is something else, ok.
I spend a lot of time transcribing videos. It's a healthier hobby.

7:18 PM
mp3s are far smaller than videos tho
arugh @Burgi bad cuts again in Dr WHo

@Bob github.com/allquixotic/so-chatbot-driver/commit/… It's not pretty, but it works
there was some broken shit with webdriverio like it couldn't (ever) find elements by id or find the frame
pissed me off so I did a rewrite with selenium-java
sean@ubuntu:~/dev$ cat debug-headless.sh
#!/bin/bash
killall firefox geckodriver nodejs >& /dev/null
sleep 1
killall -9 firefox geckodriver nodejs >& /dev/null
sleep 3
rm -rf /home/sean/dev/firefox/firefox/cache2/*
/home/sean/dev/jdk/bin/java -XX:+UseG1GC -Xmx2g -Xms32m -jar eclipse-workspace/su-chatbot/target/su-chatbot-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT-jar-with-dependencies.jar --binary="/home/sean/dev/firefox/firefox/firefox" --email='redacted' --password='redacted' --profile="/home/sean/dev/firefox/ffprofile" --scriptUrl="file:///home/sean/dev/SO-ChatBot/master.js" --noheadless
ugly launcher script but idfc
also java ends and it keeps working, headlessly or not... I kind of love that, because it's no longer tethered to a running process other than geckodriver, which keeps running to act as the parent process for the firefox instance

Back to Assassin's Creed Odyssey after several months of Ys. This is almost as hard on the hardware as Final Fantasy XV...
Just a moment while I post the benchmark report...

Bob
@HornOKPlease lol we've gone full circle

(the game generates a self-contained HTML file containing the benchmark results)

Bob
@HornOKPlease I'm pretty sure the entire reason I rewrote it in the first place was to get rid of all the sleeps :P
waiting for events > sleeps and prayers

(normally run the game with Adaptive Quality 45 fps)

10:24 PM
@Bob that's true, but Selenium protocol is inherently sleep-based. It's all based on what's available at a given instant. "Events", for EVERY Selenium-based client and Selenium-based browser host (regardless of the technologies involved) is always poll-based.
"Is it there now? Oh, okay, let's wait a few seconds. How about now?" etc.
there is no support for a browser to send a notification back over the wire protocol that something has happened
It's only a question of whether you need the sleeps in your own code or in a library
Selenide seems to do sleeps really well but for some reason the login process still kinda needs them (not ALL of them, but at least one of them seems to be required)

Bob
@HornOKPlease technically you could do that by using a script callback, I think (?), but libs probably don't do that

There are indications this game is sometimes CPU-bounded despite being optimized for AMD hardware. All 16 hardware threads are evenly loaded.
The Ryzen 7 1800X will bottleneck an RTX 2080 Ti in this machine.

10:41 PM
It's one of a small number of titles that will benefit from a Ryzen Threadripper processor.

11:38 PM
oh god, this looks absolutely horrendous to write a regex in
I need to test if strings match a regex like this PCRE one: .*(?<![A-Za-z])(T|t)+(?![A-Za-z]).* (or, yanno, .*\\b(T|t)\\b.*) ... Using Lua. Which has no good regex libraries. And I can't do anything native because it's in an ESO addon. And that LPeg library looks stupid

Bob
@HornOKPlease o.O
What is that abomination and how do I kill it
2
@HornOKPlease You can't call out to any external libs at all?
@HornOKPlease Is performance a requirement?
no lookarounds though

11:57 PM
@Bob nope
@Bob no lookarounds :P
@Bob only lua code I can import
