Ah, the future, when a post it (to block the notch) turns onto essential forensics discovery gear

2 hours later…
2:08 AM
ugh, right as I told Bob my FiOS was smooth sailing, I'm getting horrific backend issues here
the first hop to Verizon is giving normalish speeds, but depending on what tier 1 I go through, I get anything from 200 Mbps to 20 Mbps

1 hour later…
3:21 AM
@allquixotic you jinxed it

Bob
@allquixotic maybe I should leave the flight emergencies until after my trip :P

@Bob oh shit I'm so sorry man

@Bob Ever played with netplan?

seriously though, be safe, and may your control surfaces remain firmly attached

3:36 AM
lol

put your winglets on your winglets

and may your airplane not be held together by ductape, have malfunctioning airconditioning, and have in flight food that could double as a way to knock out terrorists.

3:52 AM
s/by ductape/by ductape except where it's supposed to be/
s/have/not have/g

@allquixotic I had all 3 in the same flight.

@JourneymanGeek ouch

India Air.. duct tape.... makes sense

also the flying retirement village

1 hour later…
5:13 AM
look at those swings
>500 Mbps, down to 20
cc @Bob

5:41 AM
@allquixotic looks.... regular

Bob
6:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek yea, I've disabled it a bunch of times
it, like much of ubuntu, is incredibly poorly documented
@allquixotic oof

@Bob heh, I might try beating it into working
I see the advantages if I can get it to work

@JourneymanGeek not for me!

and I've already gone a little off script by swapping UFW for firewalld

mine usually sits >500 Mbps for the entire test

@allquixotic I mean, periodic
like there's something buffering

Bob
6:16 AM
...I still don't know the point of those firewalls

Bob
<== uses iptables

@Bob in the case of firewalld, much simpler syntax, zones, the ability to actually save firewall settings in situ...

6:38 AM
I really prefer it to naked iptables
and firewalld is RH and insanely well documented ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm.
maaaaaaaaaaybe.
does it let you configure nat?

2 hours later…
8:51 AM
I'm interested, what does firewall-cmd --zone=external --query-masquerade return
I'm guessing the status is in the exit code, but they could still print something surely D:

lol
If it quietens down I can ssh in and check

AH so it's a front end for iptables, not a replacement

no
it literally says no

9:22 AM
So... I've thought about my ongoing incidents (including a lengthy discussion in Matrix which nearly led to moderator intervention) as well as how several community members here manage to run big dedicated servers, do code projects, and more...
I have come to the conclusion that the primary reason I often to fail to do the same despite being equally capable is that due to an oppressive parenting environment that places too much emphasis on following orders and respecting authority, I lack the courage to act independently when doing so risks getting in trouble with my parents.

@djsmiley2k corrected, the answer is literally no
since I've not actually turned on masquradeing yet

Heck, the decision to apply for a credit card about six months ago was done out of the house and in the field.
Over the next few days, I will be in talks with my parents to discuss how their parenting style has proven counterproductive and how they can help me build courage so I can start growing up again.

9:41 AM
@bwDraco "they can help me build courage!"
nooooo
So, I used to be something similar to what the japanese would call hikikomori
While the safety net of the parentals was useful
the essential engines of change are from you.
Its a simple but hard thing to do, but you need to find acceptance and value in yourself rather than others.
You're kinda the sort who hangs on authority figures and expects them to do your thinking for you.
and are trying to gain the respect of your peers.
(I'm sometimes baffled by how I ended up as a mod. ;) I was all sally field when I won ;p)

Well... cowardly parents raise cowardly children.
(stars pls)
A parenting environment that creates fear rather than respect stunts growth and is counterproductive.

ehh
That's a bit of an extreme thing to say
We are all products of our environment
and our generation's in a funny place where we're having trouble stepping out on our own cause the world's messed up

(you probably missed this from the Matrix side)
I will also study ways to build courage on my own and instill confidence in my parents that I can be a responsible, independent, and mature adult.

They probably think they're doing this
@bwDraco When I was a pup, I people used to try to bully me.
I didn't like to fight, but I totally managed to beat up two guys who attacked me, and the third got me. It sucked.
So.. we were on this adventure camp thing where you had to jump off a pole and catch a thing. You had a harness and it was safe.
He... was stuck for half an hour. I'd have done it.
You sometimes just need to be on the edge, and jump
You can't overthink it

9:56 AM
It's no fun being a dragon who can't spread his wings and explore the world outside the den "because the outside world is dangerous".
Oct 9 at 4:54, by noitsbecky
WHY IS THE WORLD SO BROKEN
(welp, bot's not running)

ya, its been broken a while

And there are subject matter experts here. For example, @noitsbecky knows the ins and outs of cellular networking while I'm the computer hardware expert here.
Everyone has their own talents and passions.
So... let's get nourished, get some caffeine, and get to work on Docker.

10:23 AM
czep.net/17/legion-of-lobotomized-unices.html this was a vaguely interesting read
though I've always seen it from the other end - that the skills for actually managing these systems gets rarer, though not necessarily more valuble as programmers get abstracted away from the systems they work on

11:15 AM
> One of the ways we can recapture this lost era is to reject the disposable model in favor of durable systems. We should treat stewardship of a server as a responsibility, and bring back appreciation for the beauty of the hand-crafted system. Build systems that will last, where multiple services can coexist effectively, and where users will want to return to work, communicate, and setup up their .project files.

I see being a sysadmin as a craft that demands attention to detail.
TBH, it doesn't hurt that virtualization makes it easy to experiment and learn sysadmin skills without the need for a separate machine. If it wasn't for virtualization technology, I wouldn't be where I am right now.
So in several ways, technology has made learning the essentials of server operation and administration easier and more accessible. You no longer need to spend hundreds or thousands on a dedicated machine; you can simulate a computer on your computer and run whatever OS you want.

12:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek hah awesome, so why not grep for 'no' D:
oh, i guess 'not found' would match.
@JourneymanGeek CEO's can't do this.
Elon isn't askin his momma if he should announce things on twitter, before doing so.
@bwDraco that's the opposite of the way things are going tho.

@djsmiley2k managers can

Dear lord, if there's a role I don't want more than anything else, it's manging people.

Some people are natural at it
Some people are astonishingly good cause they hate it
Others.. eem

at terrible at it, and that's why they get lumped doing it.

I could learn it...
(I'm nice to a fault, though)

12:09 PM
i could learn it too
but i wouldn't enjoy it
and I don't plan to ever work a job I don't enjoy, ever again

@bwDraco You can't really learn management. Well you learn by experience ...

I'd argue you don't really learn sysadmin

It's basically advanced IPS, something that takes lots of social experience to master.

you might know all the commads
but until you're doing it.

@djsmiley2k And of course you don't know whether you would enjoy it without actually trying it - pretty much like everything else in life.

12:11 PM
I know I hate people :D

Things like this require experience because there are too many possibilities to feasibly teach it in a controlled setting.

Exactly.

Focused learning can help, though.

ok -_-

2:32 PM
Showoff :P
They've been digging up the roads 'round here for FTTH (CityFibre business / Vodafone consumer)... I have registered my interest as it's probably a similar cost to my current FTTP ISP

Currently FTTH is the only real option here. Which is lovely

Ah, nice
I get a decent speed, as FTTP goes; but a gig-ish symmetric would be handy for offsite backups and things

It's 200/10 HFC cable here.
The 10 made it hard to push lots of data to a place like Backblaze B2, but I can manage.

Bob
3:05 PM
> The 10 made it hard
*cries in <1Mbps upstream*

@Bob lol
It's hard when you're dealing with 350 GB in photos.

1 hour later…
5:00 PM
AHHHHHHHHHHH FFS
My mouth is killing still
this isn't good.

Cavity?
@bwDraco Sounds like fightin' talk you want to hear my photo collection size
Short answer is I don't know, but the stuff that's backed up comes to around 590GB deduplicated
Really need to back the rest of it up
But since nobody has ever mentioned backups or their importance, I can be forgiven
Also, TIL that Horn OK Please is a phrase
2
(I have a CC entry for six quid to a place with that name- street food vendor in London)

5:23 PM
@bertieb not sure
iut's the teeth he was almost 'leaning on' while doing the filling on the other side
If I had the option of a whole new mouth for a 'sane' amount of money, I'd do it
however I figure the amount is insane

:-\
Sounds nasty

well it's all the back of my mouth
(most likely due to gerd making things wore

gerd?
nm. Gastroesophageal reflux disease

yah
i'm the one with the terrible stomach
> In addition, a narrowing or stricture of the esophagus may occur from chronic scarring. Some people develop a condition known as Barrett's esophagus. This condition can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.
yup, yup and maybe in the future but hopefully not.

> Dental enamel consists primarily (almost 97 percent by weight) of a calcium phosphate mineral in the form of carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA). CHA is insoluble in an alkaline medium. However, its solubility increases with a decrease in the oral pH. This effect was first noted as a result of direct contact of the tooth surface with acids from extrinsic sources such as beverages. Unlike dental caries, where the demineralization is caused by an acidic environment in GERD is due to the reflux of hydrochloric acid from the stomach (Figure 8.).
huh
so yeah :/

2 hours later…
9:04 PM
@Y.S.G. you mention those links only existing for 2 days....
on the answer you linked there is a link to a page.... which shows examples of these same links
if they only lasted two days.... it'd be impossible for anyone to use them in any sites etc.

2 hours later…
10:36 PM
journeyman if you end up reading this i think you recommended me Byobu. On a similar idea is there anything like tmux that has a GUI like midnight commander(mouse support)?

Not really
I don't use meese on terminal. You could maybe run mc in screen or use mosh rather than ssh?

Bob
11:17 PM
@William tmux has mouse support
but unless you're more specific about what you want to do with the mouse, that's a bit of a meaningless statement

@Bob I thought/inferred it is just mouse pass through unless I have a setting done wrong

11:34 PM
I want to be able to click on the tabs
lol might be silly though

Someone dumped a box for an AMD K6 ....
Liiiike I thought I held on to boxen a while

11:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek Wow, that's ancient.
Are you sure it's K6 and not K6-2 or K6-3?
If it is, that's Pentium II old.

Bob
@William see, that's completely different from "pass-through".
Pass-through implies the wrapper does not handle mouse inputs and simply passes them to the child application

Or is it just packaging?

Bob
lol, I'm just joking about the "legacy"

Seriously, though, if this was genuinely a computer and not merely packaging (as the wording suggests), then you're looking at a 20-year-old machine. It's 100% possible that this was used for a legacy line-of-business application.

Bob
11:54 PM
I wouldn't be too surprised if it were sitting under someone's desk as a NT 4.0 PDC :P

Just packaging. That makes it worse tho
Naw. This is under my apartment. Unlikely to be a business machine
I literally think someone kept the box for 20 years
