super odd thing at work. Might end up being a SU question soon
I have 2 classrooms that are not next to each other. Each has an ethernet port, and there's no obvious link
There's no IP address in classroom 2 unless there's a router set up in classroom 1 - and the router's only connected via the wan port ._.
but if there's no internet, the router should do nothing
its almost like the last room is in an odd network segment with no IPs given to it

So each classroom has only one Ethernet wall receptacle in each classroom?

and somehow having a router causes an ip to be ... hm. I do believe its an odd/unusual range
yes
if any
and cabling is a mess so tracing them will be challenging

So the router in classroom 1 connects its WAN port to the Ethernet wall port and then once connected to the classroom 2 wall port you can get a DHCP address but only if that router is connected on just the WAN port in classroom one will the devices connected to classroom 2 will get network access / IP address assigned?

yup
port in classroom 1 is fine. Port in classroom 2 does not pick up an IP unless there's a dhcp server in classroom 1. HOWEVER, having a single connection to a wan port should not do that

Are you able to look at the router configs just to confirm the settings? If you connect a PC directly to the WAN port on the router, does it get an IP? I'd have to take a stab at tracing the wires to the patch panel just in case. Getting an IP from a WAN port on a router seems odd for sure but I would assume connecting directly to it rather than having it linked across unknown wires would make no difference in that behavior.

Bob
3:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek Do you have a single location they should all terminate at?
Easy test: check which lights are on, plug something in, check again, unplug, check again.
Hm. I have a meeting in 10 mins that I don't think exists anymore... but no confirmation o.O

Those are my favorite type of meetings—no longer exist.

4:11 AM
errr
badly labelled
also, that shouldn't work at all

4:27 AM
@Bob hm. The room with the oddness is labeled. Might cause Ed from tcr to run away, it's that bad.

5:00 AM
@Bob also the wan connection (for a double nat) causing the other side to pick up an IP address makes no sense ;p

Bob

@NotDog re: ooooooooooooold gif destroys cpu convo.
that's consuming a whole core and 2/5 of another.

@Rahul2001 yes. Also language!
@Burgi or merely shambling very slowly?

@JourneymanGeek sorry

1 hour later…
@Bob Interesting

@Bob Indeed interesting.

11:22 AM
@Bob indeed, but with a mouse i'm ambidexerious :/

Bob
@djsmiley2k My mouse is shaped for right hands... using it left-handed was a challenge! :P

Given their domain name, I assumed they meant for me to move it with my mind or something

most aren't much of a challenge. Though the first one is annoying.

I don't think beating them is the ultimate goal here ;D

@Bob I think I missed the point

11:29 AM
@satibel I got it in 3 tries, lucky I guess.
@OliverSalzburg Nod
needs achievements

also, I discovered that my right-hand mouse works quite nice with left hand

OH MY GOD! ITS A FRISBEE! Oh no, its just the point going over people's heads...

must be a "developer thing"

Bob
@tereško The point is to show you how a (visually-)impaired user might experience some poorly designed sites.

@tereško It's easiest if you also turn it upside-down
The tests get a bit more challenging as well

11:30 AM
Amusingly I was born a lefty, got forced to be like everyone else...

@OliverSalzburg nope. my fingers are not at the bottom of the palm, though I have has a lot of practice with using a mouse sideways, when discussing something with a coworker

so the other hand is the correct one

Bob
So when it feels broken, like "how the fuck do I use this?", the point is some users actually experience real sites that way.

@Bob can probably attest to how damned confused I get between left and other left right

Bob
lol
"it's to your right. no, no that right. nonono, RIGHT, the one you're NOT going in"
made for fun driving :P

11:33 AM
Even funnier cause I'm actually a decent in game driver ;p

Bob
the colour one really confused me for a bit, cause i have some issues with red-green
but usually not that bad ... didn't realise until the next page that they'd fudged the colours :\

@Bob eh. Ordered that HDD enclosure.Probably going to reach me after my bday tho ;p

i struggled with the two colours in a row test

I have trouble with those deformed word capachas

thats because they are for tell humans and computers apart. Dogs weren't considered

11:38 AM
._. that is speciesist.
also, I have dyslexia ;p

@JourneymanGeek same
but my dad is also a lefty
at home we had the mouse on the left
caused me tolearn both ways ;D
@OliverSalzburg I'm also pretty good with this
my spacial awareness is 2nd to none...
so wifes clutch on car went
well, was 'making nice grinding noises' as the mechanic put it as we drove up
he took it for a drive, came down the hill, it went completely.
as in no more gears \o/
Ended up just buying a cheapo Picasaa they happened to have out the back for £700
Which, concidering 99% of their cars are £3+, is keeping me happy enough, even if I did have to sub the wife for it
(She originally brought my car for £1500 lhahaha

Bob
@JourneymanGeek standard free shipping? :P
@Burgi yea, that took me a while to parse
> £3+
Pretty cheap cars there

11:55 AM
@Bob rofl
yeah
£3k

12:13 PM
the editing on the BBC News site is getting worse....

@Bob I don't think I could use my trackball with my left pinky - it's designed for a right thumb :)
@Burgi That's perfectly understandable English - as long as it's next to the photo.

not sure how they are going to handle that

12:29 PM
@Bob No free shipping
but shrug
VERY cool toy
also, unlike a certain reliable yet dodgy chinese retailer I often use, properly tracked

@djsmiley2k how much was the new clutch?

@Burgi 100 pound + 1000 pound for installation, probably

I took a shot of myself in front of green screen. The shot was to be with me on a background. In Windows Explorer however the caching shows green screen, while preview shows background.
Huh?
It's like background is a layer, outside of image capsule and Windows Explorer does not show it?

the miniature cache is broken; delete it, maybe?

Delete Thumbs file?

12:40 PM
@satibel surely not... mine was about £300 all in

Thumbs are overrated anyway

@Burgi more than the cheapo car i replaced it with

fair enough

@djsmiley2k any trade in on the old one?

12:47 PM
@Burgi Cmax's are a pain to change
@JourneymanGeek scrap value - £240

which isn't bad tbh, mechanic said they could get someone for £150 but advised to try online

Q: How can I tell what version of Microsoft Office I am using?

Jonathan David ArndtYou would think the product version would be in a more obvious place. I have checked: File Menu Options Title bar Account Settings Help Product version is nowhere to be found. Is this some kind of secret? What am I missing?

What a terribad question

Anyone know why I get a spinner here and what it's trying to tell me?

'Ive looked everywhere!!!' --- self answers seconds later.

Other than "Fuck off"

12:53 PM
@OliverSalzburg I guess it's trying to figure out your timezone and so set your time automatically?

@djsmiley2k He set out to self-answer. Q&A have the exact same date
@djsmiley2k It's been doing it for like 5 minutes and the system is configured to use UTC
And now it actually completed on 2/3 systems
Huh

@djsmiley2k Especially as it is a dupe of a similar question which I answered :)

I still have the wrong time though...

@OliverSalzburg And didn't find the dupe ...

I'd give bonus points for self-answering in the first place, but that markup job is appalling!
I always notice my PC clock being off by posting something on GitHub and it says "posted in 2 minutes from now"

1:03 PM
@OliverSalzburg I just run ntp. That put an end to any Windows time issues.

1:15 PM
> David Davis urged the EU to 'get down to business' today as he kicked off the second round of Brexit talks - but appeared to have turned up without his notes.

The Brexit Secretary sat down with counterpart Michel Barnier for the second round of negotiations in Brussels this morning, saying he wanted to make progress on a deal for reciprocal rights for citizens.

But pictures showed the UK team without any paperwork as they sat across the table from the Eurocrats - who were armed with huge piles of documents.
Hmm.

@DavidPostill What do you mean? Our systems are supposed to sync via NTP as well. The configuration was borked by my recent migrations though, I guess

@OliverSalzburg I run my own ntp daemon :)

Ah, I see. Yeah, if I'm not mistaken, the clients should sync with a domain controller. When the time between the DCs and a client drifts, you can no longer log on at the client. So even if the time was "wrong" on the DC, it must be just as wrong on all clients, otherwise you have a problem :D
But right now it appears that nothing is syncing with anything :(

@DavidPostill WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG????

@OliverSalzburg syncing up to the server.

1:20 PM
When I sync with an NTP server, it doesn't take several minutes usually
Well, I guess the time to even out the difference has to come from somewhere ;D

DNS issues?

> Please wait for your time to sync. Estimated sync completion: 22:47:34

@Burgi It could be they have all the paperwork on their laptops/iPads/whatever, but that does seem unlikely ...

@DavidPostill agreed

@Burgi Not impossible. Could also be more dreaded IPv6 issues now that I think about it

1:25 PM
@OliverSalzburg the NTP hamster is at wit's end, he cannot run anymore, that's why.

do you think we can turn around to the EU and say "look we're sorry, can we just stay?"

@satibel Now that sounds convincing

i was thinking the other day that maybe they can offer UK citizens a sort of super-state nationless EU passport

@Burgi Why would anyone want that?
Other than the UK citizens receiving it

idk...
i'm just not looking forward to even bigger queues when i go on holiday

1:34 PM
guy walks away with cuts and bruises
his name? Jesus.

the guy in the car walked away unharmed. (the guy on the motorbike, less.)

@djsmiley2k What side is the drivers side in that car?

@OliverSalzburg I think it's on the right.
Those two bits you see there? Same car.
both people survived D:
the side, top and bottom of the car ripped off, leaving the driver seat behind.

@djsmiley2k where the hell did the pipe come from?

@Burgi a over pass
it rolled off a truck that lost control.

1:38 PM
Morning

Hi not dave.

Good morning dj smiley
I havent seen shoe dave in a while.
I hope he's okay..

@Mokubai you've brought down the Pakistani government!

> "Why would anyone use a completely unknown font for an official document"

@Burgi not me guv, that was @DavidPostill

@ThatREDACTEDGuy tbf to them they considered windings but they couldn't find the symbol for "particle accelerator"
2

I argued that it could be possible. Everyone else seems to be arguing that it was impossible. Which is wrong.
It might be unlikely, but that is not the same as impossible.

2:12 PM
@Burgi it's not in unicode either! blasphemy!

@DavidPostill I wasn't arguing that it was impossible, just that it was a crap question as it was impossible to know if they could have had it. @Rahul2001

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Because Calibri is gorgeous!

@Burgi That's precisely why they should have used emoji!
Emoji is science-compliant! 🔬⚗️🔭🚀⚛️

@DavidPostill Um, probably shouldn't disclose people's IP block, even if it's guessable and there are several people involved

@BenN Oops.

2:16 PM
:38828075 well, that's HNQ for you. Idiots come crawling out of the woodwork to tell you that you're wrong, or right, or that your father was a hamster and your mother smelt of elderberries
Still. Keeps life interesting, eh?

@BenN ...and because government computers in third world countries are full of warez they maybe had access to msdn insider previews?

Hang on, what format was the document typed in originally?

> There is a network partition with movies and music that can be accessed by anyone from the Senate in Brasilia. There are 80 gigs of [...] records and movies [...] . Yes, you read it right: just 80 Giga of piracy for hundreds of public servants and 81 senators. Let us agree. It's too little. (source)

I wouldn't be surprised if it was copy/pasted, losing formatting, into a Word document that defaulted to Calibri
Also, can we appreciate Financial Times for the "sans Sherif" pun?

it does seem odd to base the entire court case on what font was used

2:24 PM
@BenN that's the key problem. It could easily have been bulk converted after the fact and the problem is that no one kept the original because you wouldn't believe that anyone would yell "FAAAAAAAAKE" because of a damnable font.

@BenN lol

@ThatREDACTEDGuy n00bs
or they clearly download crappy quality

The real reason for this termination is risk of liability. Any action other than termination, including a written warning, exposes THD to the risk of a multi-million-dollar lawsuit in the event a similar incident occurs and the employee is injured or killed.
The employee's age of 70 amplifies this legal risk.

wife giving me a heart attack there
sends message
omg 2.1 just choked and his lips started turning blue
me 'wtf are you texting me for!!!'
'Oh he's fine now'
-_-;

THD can potentially be held liable for wrongful death or negligence if they kept the employee. Even if another incident happens that doesn't involve that person, that failure to terminate could be treated as evidence against THD.

2:41 PM

@bwDraco sad isn't it :/
When I worked in a supermarket in the UK, we were told we could stop shoplifters if we wanted to, but not to approach if they had any weapon

As tempting as it may be to support the former employee's position, we must remember to look at the other side of the story. Companies can and do have good reason to fear getting sued.

eh lawyers

Our tort system seriously needs reform.

the whole america system needs reform

2:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek I am very confused about how she saw anything at all through them

In the grand scheme of things, I ultimately have to side with THD.

@BenN comments suggest they were not actually over the part of the eye you see with

Ah

they were in a pouchy place above it.

Magic Rocks. Not just for Audiophools.

2:49 PM
@djsmiley2k I think that is why they published it

Also, what if the people in question aren't actually commiting a crime? The company can be sued for this, too.

A super-Earth is an extrasolar planet with a mass higher than Earth's, but substantially below the masses of the Solar System's ice giants, Uranus and Neptune, which contain 15 and 17 Earth masses respectively. The term super-Earth refers only to the mass of the planet, and so does not imply anything about the surface conditions or habitability. The alternative term gas dwarfs may be more accurate for those at the higher end of the mass scale, as suggested by MIT professor Sara Seager, although mini-Neptunes is a more common term. == Definition == In general, super-Earths are defined exclusively...

Q: How to get Thunderbird to nicely format Markdown?

BrutusI like Thunderbird for my email along with plain text. I disabled HTML emails and generally write most of my stuff in markdown anyway. So I'm looking for a way, to get Thunderbird to display markdown formatted plain text mails nicely when I view them. To clarify: I know Markdown Here. It's nice...

An open bounty

Technically the architecture is called Bonnell but nobody refers to it this way.
Bonnell is a CPU microarchitecture used by Intel Atom processors which can execute up to two instructions per cycle. Like many other x86 microprocessors, it translates x86 instructions (CISC instructions) into simpler internal operations (sometimes referred to as micro-ops, effectively RISC style instructions) prior to execution. The majority of instructions produce one micro-op when translated, with around 4% of instructions used in typical programs producing multiple micro-ops. The number of instructions that produce more than one micro-op is significantly fewer than the P6 and NetBurst m...

@Burgi There is a topic for this room? It seems to me it is general talking room for SU.SE.

@ppr It is.
For the same reason almost nobody refers to an Apollo Lake device as using Goldmont microarchitecture.

@ppr Pretty much anything and everything

@ppr i meant the question itself is off-topic, its asking for a product recommendation

A similarly-confusing situation exists with AMD processors. For Ryzen, the core architecture codename is Zen, the die is called Zeppelin, the platform and processor Summit Ridge, and the chipset Promontory. (The latter two are for AM4.)

I wonder why it's so common for people who work with technology to not have the ability to read instructions, extrapolate, and apply common sense. And these people earn at least twice my salary, FFS!
So here am I having wasted my morning to record a screencast showing how to install and activate a Drupal module.
Sure, it's Drupal (yuck!) and that usually involves very convoluted and illogical steps...
But how the fuck a 3 step list of "1) install module A, 2) install the module B dependency, 3) clone this dependency git repo on folder Y" can justify two followup emails with nonsense questions about FTP and JavaScript.

(... for TR4, the platform and processor have codename Whitehaven, can't find the chipset codename.)

The EPYC server processor is codenamed Naples. This platform has no external chipset.

@djsmiley2k are you 12? ;)

Can you please not post NSFW content in this room?

@djsmiley2k No, they should log in on the web interface of the CMS and install the modules on there, next next activate, no CLI needed. Except for the repo cloning, but that can't be so difficult

You said it yourself:
