By the Nine!
Sep 9 '16 at 23:09, by bwDraco
Does anyone know of a 24-inch IPS display that does at least 120 Hz refresh, has 1440p resolution, supports G-SYNC, and covers at least 90% of Adobe RGB?
Well, I guess this meets or exceeds all of these requirements.
Problem is, this thing is going to be insanely expensive...

yup
also
> To take full advantage of the Predator X27 monitor, gamers are going to need an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10-series graphics card with a DisplayPort 1.4 connector. NVIDIA & Acer are using every bit of bandwidth offered by DisplayPort 1.4 here, and even that's not enough; the X27's bandwidth requirements actually exceed what DisplayPort can provide
I'd wait a generation ._.

27-inch, 4K@144Hz, AHVA with quantum dot and direct LED backlighting, 100% sRGB, 99% Adobe RGB (!), 96% DCI-P3 (!!!), 10-bit color HDR, G-SYNC, and Tobii eye-tracking.

@bwDraco yeah. All that new tech is scary ;p

yAWN
SO DEAD TODAY
Gonna be even worse tmorrow as it's bank holiday as well -_-

Well, finally, a wide-gamut display for gamers!
Nov 14 '16 at 1:43, by bwDraco
The problem is that wide-gamut panels are so hard to find in a gaming monitor. I need the display to be able to do both gaming and photo editing.

12:30 AM
Also, I would need new gear to properly calibrate this thing. My ColorMunki Display is not equipped to handle 10-bit HDR displays (I think it only does up to DCI-P3) and I would probably need a much more expensive spectrophotometer to calibrate it to HDR10.
Not too sure about the measurement constraints of this colorimeter but I kinda doubt its ability to handle anything past DCI-P3.

12:48 AM
What kinda lighting you got @bwDraco
for when you're working on a monitor?

@djsmiley2k LED for the most part.
If not, natural light from my bedroom window.

ah right
yeha, obvs. natural light is best, just wondering what is defacto these days
i studied graphic design back in college, many years ago
Led lighting then wasn't really something you'd hear about...

1:33 AM
Right
it's time for that robocopy stuff I was talking about

1:45 AM
C:\Users\XXX>robocopy /eta /Z "\\10.1.2.3\c$\path\dbbackup
" "F:\Backups\" MREP.0.DB2.NODE0000.CATN0000.
20170430010520.001 CDB.0.DB2.NODE0000.CATN0000.20170430010028.001
Can any of you cool cats explain why that tells mefilename is incorrect
ah, the \ it added to the destination path as breaking it heh

2:05 AM
Wait a sec. Why is Acer shipping this thing with a monitor hood?
This is not something you normally see on anything other than high-end $1000+ professional displays.

it likely lets them 'adjust' the brightness numbers?

Apparently, it's supplied to allow for easier color calibration. Notice the cutout in the top if you look closely; this is intended to allow the use of a colorimeter or spectrophotometer.
Again, you typically only see these sorts of hoods on very expensive professional monitors.

o_O
Would a hood affect colour calibation tho?

You'd use this when you're doing color-critical work. It shields the display from glare.
Then again... it looks like Acer has decided to spare no expense with this display.

http://www.pcmag.com/review/353325/acer-predator-21-x — Shor's bones!
Apparently, this is not the first time Acer has released a product that is utterly designed without regard to cost; see the linked message.
$9000 "laptop"? You bet.
Now a gaming monitor that can pull double duty as a professional wide-gamut display for serious photo and video work?
This is basically what the Predator X27 is.
2 hours ago, by bwDraco
27-inch, 4K@144Hz, AHVA with quantum dot and direct LED backlighting, 100% sRGB, 99% Adobe RGB (!), 96% DCI-P3 (!!!), 10-bit color HDR, G-SYNC, and Tobii eye-tracking.
The Predator 21 X laptop is a striking example of the sort of system that's possible when a computer manufacturer decides to design a product completely without regard to cost.
There's a reason people call it "ridiculous", "insane", and "absurd".
Apr 7 at 6:01, by Journeyman Geek
@bwDraco for people who want a bigger epeen
(out of context, but fits here 100%)
> Eric Ackerson, the company's senior product marketing and brand manager, says the company isn't expecting to make much revenue off the Predator 21X, but that it mainly wants to push back against its reputation as a netbook-making, value-focused manufacturer. It's a brand play, in other words.
It's an engineering masterwork more than it is a normal product.
Hence, designed without regard to cost.

2:29 AM
yah
Ok so I need batch script to.... take the path of the files to be saved to, the IP of the store, make the folder, copy the files, delete the old one if more than 2 backups exist, confirm in a log somewhere (or leave a window open on screen informing of success...
yey fun
Oh and issue net use for each one too..

3:03 AM
for /d %%X in ("F:\BLEH With Spaces\30042017") do (for /d %%a in (%%X) do ( "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -tzip "%%X.zip" ".\%%a\" ))
these scripts don't deal with spaces gah

3:41 AM
Those predators cost makes Apple laptop computers look cheap

lol

@William I wouldn't keep a Predator if it was donated to me. I would sell it. It's a status symbol I don't want.
In my view, having one of those would say I have more money than brains, and don't know what to do with either one.

The most I have spent on a laptop in any one single sitting was $700. I buy macs and Thinkpads used typically. Upgrade them with SSD and RAM and they work well enough.

holy cow I did a thing
well, fixed a thing I found online at least.
for /f "tokens=1,2,3,4 delims=/- " %%x in ("%date%") do set d=%%x%%y%%z
set data=%d%

@JourneymanGeek We have an empty "iphone-4" tag. (superuser.com/questions/tagged/iphone-4?sort=newest) Can you please take care of it?

That's vanish on its own eventually

Bob
The empty tags will be removed automatically after 24 hours by the system, don't worry about them — Yi Jiang Nov 17 '11 at 2:20

wtf
I'm havingl... weird issues with calling one batch script from another
due to spaces in the file path :/

user226528
4:51 AM
Wrap it in quotes? Escape it?

not sure how to escape it
/me sighs
i'll take another look tomorrow night

lol

Bob
of course, it's solved now :P
(like so 🙂)

5:54 AM
quite

@Bob Never have that problem. (I'm better than that :D) as Remo heard it

Oh reall? (I'd never have guessed ;p)

I see that upvotes and downvotes are locked after some time (one hour?) but the "mark as answer" button is not. Why?

Kinda sorta
you undo a vote if there's an edit
also, the idea is the "right" answer might change
sometimes much after the fact

user226528
Yeah, but what if someone goes on an unmark-as-answer revenge?

It would be a pain but is pretty rare

user226528
Changing the mark to another answer is probably okay.

and there's no tool for doing anything it as far as I know.

user226528
8:07 AM
...Unless that answer is the author's own answer.

(tbh, if we noticed, we'd go "hang on", throw on a short pre-emptive suspension, and get help probably)
Well no. We'd search meta first ;p

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Cute. You think vengeful people stop revenging if it takes more than one click? ;)

We try to assume people have good intentions ;)

Hi guys, I'm doing a workshop. Tomorrow!

user226528
Aha! Right. Good assumption actually.

user226528
8:10 AM
@Nick What if they pot the wrong hole?

user226528
@JourneymanGeek It's a pool table expression.

user226528
It means aiming the ball to go into one hole but sending that ball or another ball to another hole.

@Nick break a leg. Preferably not too literally.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek In How to Train Your Dragon 2, it is revealed that the twins had mistakenly thought "you can't make an omelette without breaking a few legs!"

8:13 AM
@FleetCommand ._.
ow
@FleetCommand the other variation of that is "Break a leg, preferably someone elses"

user226528
When Astrid corrected their mistake, they said they had to apologize to quite a lot of people including their mum!

user226528
Also, it if potting the wrong hole involves potting the 8 ball by mistake, that's catastrophic.

user226528
Huh! This is strange: A starred message from Rahul2001 says "I turn 16 in exactly a week!"

8:52 AM
@FleetCommand I was never there then.
@JourneymanGeek I'm packing my running shoes just in case.
I'm actually not qualified to give that talk. The only reason I said yes was because google exists.

techniques or ethics?

9:19 AM
@FleetCommand The protagonist lost a foot and the dragon lost a part of its tail in the previous movie. I wonder if that line was an intentional jab at that.
@JourneymanGeek techniques. I'm ethically sound. Thank you very much.
I've probably reached Kohlberg's 4th level in ethical development.
Hacking...using code and software...that's tricky.

ooh
I just found the wholesaler for the sort of dog collars we prefer

@JourneymanGeek O_O You need to buy them in bulk?

Bob
@DavidPostill Do you not buy your dog collars in bulk?

@DavidPostill no, but that helps me find a retailer to buy one
and seriously
doggyfriend.com/EzyDog-Neo-Collar_p_6941.html these are like, the best collars

@Bob No, but then I'm not a vicar :)

9:32 AM
hm
Seems to be out of stock in most online places

@Nick 0_0 Delhi?

@Rahul2001 No, Kalady, Kerala.
Anyone interested in flying down here XD

lol
alas, security by obscurity

@JourneymanGeek Hey, I'm actually going to talk about STO as well.

9:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek "'Smiles To Oneself' - when something is moderately funny, but not funny enough to make you laugh out loud." :)

Star Trek Online?

@JourneymanGeek Security Through Obscurity. It's a heavily important topic. Very chill.

Sticking Out Tongue

9:48 AM
@DavidPostill I will put this on the slide.

@Nick :)

Do lithium cells in wireless earbuds have expiry as a result of degradation when NOT IN USE?

user226528
@Nick Not really. It was a jab at the twins (who are utter idiots) and at Vikings in general (who all have a limb missing).

@Boris_yo Good question. They do but we don't talk about it. the average person loses their wireless earbuds while jogging long before anyone can notice.
@FleetCommand Glad to see a Dreamworks animation junkie in this room besides myself :)

@Nick Hmm. I think I would notice immediately if my music stopped in one or both ears ...

user226528
9:55 AM
@DavidPostill You pinged the wrong person.

user226528
@Nick Actually, I am more of a Pixar enthusiast.

@DavidPostill Me too. But I don't wear earphones. Just halucinate auditorily.
@FleetCommand To be honest I prefer Warner Brothers Animation...and Disney.

@Nick I guess buying a spare bluetooth earbuds does not justify it if they won't be much in use?

@FleetCommand No I didn't. I was responding to @Nick's comment.

@Boris_yo Buy a wired Seinhesier, cheap and better quality.
@DavidPostill ... you didn't get it.

user226528
9:57 AM
True that.

@Nick Then explain it.

@DavidPostill First you explain how to bypass a wifi captive portal, that blocks porn, without using Tor or VPN. Then I'll think about it.

@Nick is that ethical? ;p
@Nick warner in the late 90s was excellent

@JourneymanGeek Knowing it (the technique) is. Using it is not.

Batman TAS for example
and of course, animaniacs

10:00 AM
Warener Animation is still good in making movies. Check out Teen Titans vs JL and The Judas contract.

@Nick Shrug. I don't care enough to want to know.

The new batman movies with Damien as Robin are also very nice.
@DavidPostill I know you don't but what am I?

@Nick the big thing with TAS was the stories/animation style
those were much more influencial than a "cartoon" had any right to be.
And I wish batman beyond lasted longer.

@JourneymanGeek and Harley. Oh boy, did that OC pop into the DC-verse in a big way.

@Nick and the TAS harley and her interaction with joker and ivy...
she was in a abusive relationship with the joker

10:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek Same here. I bought all the 2.0 comics. It was pretty sick. One issue had a backstory where Batman impregnated Barb while she was engaged to Dick.

Ivy was doing her best to help. and it worked
(she does end up living a relatively normal life.)

@JourneymanGeek /there's a new BTAS-inspired movie where Batman enlists the help of Harley to find Ivy. It's coming out soon.

@Nick ah. I kinda lost touch with comics at some point. I probably need to see if I can get my paws on it.
Saw the previews
I'd love to see dini script a live action movie
he gets how batman should look/feel

user226528
@Nick From Warner Bros, I've only watched Iron Giant. That was cool, but only because a Pixar director made it. (Brad Bird)

@JourneymanGeek Robin becomes Batman Beyond ater the suit time travels. It's cool to see both Batman and Future Bat in the same time.
@FleetCommand Don't be a seggregist. Watch all the animations!

10:04 AM
I like grumpy bruce ;p

So did Batgirl apparently.

@Nick I've no idea. Try looking in a mirror :)

There's one episode where someone's trying to drive him nuts

user226528
And I hate Disney. They make sexist films.

and it dosen't work cause the voice keeps calling him bruce

10:05 AM
@FleetCommand Yeah, it's almost always feminist! Where are the men represented! when do we get a fair chance.
The nuttiest batman ought to be Joker-Batman.
"I'm the Joker. I'm Batman. I'm the Joker and Batman"
Very sick guy. I don't know how it became popular.
He let's go of all big crime and then, kills people for petty crimes like jay-walking and bringing 11 items to a 10 item counter.

@Nick that reminds me of that guy from watchmen

@JourneymanGeek uh, the comedian? or Ozzy?

user226528
@Nick According to Wikipedia, DreamWorks has made 34 animation films so far. I've watched 28 of them.

no. the ink blot guy. I can't spell it

@JourneymanGeek Rorscharch ... I think

10:08 AM
yup
I didn't like watchmen tho
or the millar comics
too grimdark

yeah, much too dark

user226528
Huh! The video is "not available in my country". I wonder...

poor doggie

The guy who played Freddy Krueger in the new Elm Street movies played Rorshchack in the Watchmen
@FleetCommand Yes, use Tor

user226528
10:13 AM
@Nick No need. I logged in. It became available in my country all of a sudden. Seriously, Google....

@FleetCommand Your IP was in one country. Your google account was in another. I wonder how that works.

10:35 AM
Hey, anyone have any advice for me for tomorrow?

Know where the exits are, and you can always throw cats at people if you need a distraction?

What do you expect out of an Ethical Hacking Workshop? What would you want to know after that class?

Most workshops of that kind, people are looking at a broad overview of things IMO
;p

@JourneymanGeek I have 3 kittens in my fedora. Running shoes, a map of the canvas and a grenade if they start using weapons. I think I'm set in terms of personal safety.

You're not going to learn much in a day. Soft skills are probably more useful

10:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek Good. That's all I can give them. I can't even demo most things except phishing. ;/

as a speaker, if you don't use fillers, but rather pause, you sound smarter
and remember, you probably more than most of em. So act confident. They smell fear

@JourneymanGeek Probably but giving them an awesome presentation is just as necessary. I'm going to be using a lot of animation. Just started making the slides right now.

ah
._.
I don't use slides if I can avoid it

@JourneymanGeek Wow, that's actually pretty great advice. Thank you, I will try my best.

I just do one per 30 seconds, with minimal stuff

10:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek Then, wtf do I do? What do I show them? Actual hacking!? lol.

Well, I tend to talk
demos are fine

@JourneymanGeek What would you expect I demo if you came to learn how to hack?

but if they're looking at a screen, or worse, you're looking at a screen, you arn't engaging them
@Nick well, not when you're talking anyway ;p

Well... they will be put infront of a screen. It's a lab with computers for all of them.

I mean, if its a small group, hands on demos are cool
ah

10:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek small-ish ... 150 people

that's not small ;p

user226528
That's huge.

I'm going to be murdered tomorrow, aren't I?

user226528
I wouldn't go that far. Only manslaughtered. ;)

hehe. I fully understand things can go south really quick. I'm taking a lot of caution. It is my first workshop after all.

10:43 AM
You'll be fine
the worst thing you can do in these situations is panic

user226528
As long as you keep away from the F word and don't shout, you should be fine.

user226528
In other words, you'll be fine. Whether you like it or not.

12:07 PM
@FleetCommand Yes, ofcourse I won't mention Firewall ;D
@JourneymanGeek "Don't Panic" is what the cover of THGTTG told me.

user226528
Took him more than one hour for a come back. Still better than Sheldon though.

erf
I am brainfarting over how to get a list of mods for a site
and I think MSE dosen't have one anyway

lol
It is... blank
ah, its under users.
Oh well. Its not a proper question/answer and my best guess effort is good enough ;p

12:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek whois site mods in the other place

Won't work. They have no mods of their own.

1:10 PM
@FleetCommand that's what she said :D

user226528
@Nick Who?

user226528
(I should probably wait another hour for the answer...)

1:32 PM
@FleetCommand I'm sure she didn't take that long

user226528
@JourneymanGeek No, she didn't.

2:43 PM
@FleetCommand Yo mamma
(I intentionally waited off an hour just to say that)

and hour and a half. Which is one hour 29 minutes less than...
....
whoa

o.O
I go to Buena Vista.

3:00 PM
Welp, took the plunge and got a New York Times subscription on a "50% off for one year" promo.

@JourneymanGeek Way to ruin my day :( Bombs.
@bwDraco And in Africa, a child just died of dehydration.

@Nick naw
it wasn't a bomb

@JourneymanGeek I'm a conspiracy theorist. If I say it's a bomb, a fraction of the internet will believe it is a bomb, alright. Papers will print it was a bomb. The President will say it was a bomb. Nobody wants an accident. Jihad is what sells newspapers.

Apparently it was an accident ._.
I'm trying to work out if these are the guys who do LPG cabs
@Nick heh, My dad's in the market for a car
I want to know what make and model so I can avoid it ;p

How did I ever edit videos on one monitor before?! How did I survive without this? So convenient..

3:04 PM
@JourneymanGeek I'm sure your dad isn't worth as much as a car. Withdraw him from the market.

ah! They did LPG
@Nick lol. I want him to get something safe.

@SimonSheehan What app do you use.

Your car randomly catching fire and blowing up is not on the list of features of cars we want

@Nick It's a digital subscription.

@SimonSheehan Yeah, I just registered a sole proprietership for just $80. The web firm is atleast getting new clients every now and again.

@JourneymanGeek Oh, lol, didn't see :P

@Nick I just do freelance right now. I'm actually employed by my college (still in school for another year). Some volunteer do for some fun times
Sports is my real fun though.

3:26 PM
@SimonSheehan Want to work at my start-up?

@Nick I'll have to pass at the moment - sort of bogged down on work as is. But thank you.

@SimonSheehan /you're welcome. :) Please tell me if you know anyone interested.

@Nick What is your business?

@SimonSheehan Security, Webtechnology, Business Solution, Robotics and AI.
Basically, almost everything.

@Rahul2001 I saw that on twitter today and sent a mail to the guy who owns super-user.com

This LQ review got 3 delete votes and 1 Look OK and the review is complete, yet it still exists. Must delete votes be unanimous for a LQ post to be deleted? Just curious...

No, if the review was completed fully, that page would say "review completed" - the task was invalidated
I'm guessing it was put into the LQP queue by an NAA or VLQ flag, which was then dismissed by a mod
Once the conditions that put a post in the queue become false, the task is invalidated

That makes sense.
I do see it says "no longer reviewable." Though I think it also says that when the outcome is that it gets deleted by the reviews
OK, riddle me this: How's come this review is completed with only my one vote? Did a mod agree? superuser.com/review/low-quality-posts/648603

Sometimes a single Looks OK will complete the task, and I don't know why :/

Hmphf. Being in this field makes it hard to not know why!!! dang it.

@Twisty Time to raise hell on Meta.SE ;)

6:08 PM
Oh wait, found the answer - it depends on how many flags were on the post
One flag, one Looks OK to complete

@SimonSheehan I could. Eh. Maybe someday. I have a list of questions but I need to do my own research first...which holds me back.
@BenN Nice find. So there IS a case where we can go 1v1 on flags. How interesting...

Anyone here know how to use bash to cut off all lines in a file after a certain column? Pretty sure sed or something could do that

No idea. Sure wish there was a site were you could ask a question like that. ;-)

awk something something echo $1-5
or sed, yes
urgh
this smells like an audit
but, if it's not, there's technically nothing wrong with the question

@djsmiley2k You just been lurkin in the background waiting for something interesting to happen?

7:56 PM
@Nick Oh, yeah. The so-called "yo mamma" joke/insult that I never understand. Americans seem get worked up over it so much. I just don't get it.

@FleetCommand You don't get the jokes (which aren't funny IMHO) or you don't get why people get worked up about them?
The jokes are so popular there is a TV show - in the US of course.
Yo Momma is an American television show based upon insulting one's mother. Creators, executive producers and hosts are Wilmer Valderrama, along with Sam Sarpong (Seasons 1 and 2), Jason Everhart and Destiny Lightsy. The show—which ran from 2006 to 2007, and as the title suggests—used "yo momma" jokes, and many episodes featured guest appearances from rappers. == Guest appearances == === Season 1: Los Angeles === Week One: Method Man Week Two: Mike Jones Week Three: Chingy Week Four: Ne-Yo Best of LA: They were selected as the jury for the hosts === Season 2: New York City === Week One...

user226528
@DavidPostill Neither of the two.

@FleetCommand Well you are not missing much. It is reality TV after all.

user226528
@DavidPostill I watch The Big Bang Theory sometimes. The maternal insult part is like the lamest part of the show. I mean they say "I'll ask your mother tonight" implying what both you and I know. Well, I'm like "that was the most pathetic lie I've ever heard."

user226528
8:07 PM
I mean are you going to enrage him or are going to make him laugh to death as to what a fool you are!

@FleetCommand Humour is can be very culture dependent. I don't really find any of the US sitcoms funny at all.

@DavidPostill I am keeping up. I saw that from @Nick_Craver and I immediately mailed the super-user.com owner if he'd sell cheaper. I DM'd nick that sup3rus3r.com is free to buy.

Hi, guys. Came across this question in the reopen review queue: superuser.com/questions/1204700/…. It's closed as off-topic, and five users agreed, but there were no comments and nothing pops out at me as why it would be (although it might be too broad). Can anyone provide some feedback to the OP on the specific issue?

@fixer1234 Yeah. That. I just voted reopen. I don't know why was it closed as off-topic, but this seems wrong.

@FleetCommand @fixer1234 Reopened. Lets see what happens :)

@DavidPostill @fixer1234 I suspect people tried to migrate the question to SF, but the question author is question-banned on SF, so it just did a generic off-topic closure (that explains the weird instant lock/unlock cycle)

@BenN Even if they weren't question banned it would have gotten sent back ("I have Windows Server 2012 R2 on my home server machine") - they don't like home networks :/
